How about both? Jim Cantiello takes us behind the seating process before Sunday’s big show. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jim Cantiello and the seating cards for Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson at the Gibson Amphitheatre Photo: MTV News The 2011 MTV Movie Awards are only days away, and that means all the finishing touches are being made inside the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. MTV News’ Jim Cantiello was on hand as the seating cards were placed inside the theater, and he learned which of Hollywood’s biggest stars would be rubbing elbows during Sunday’s big show. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year, you guys: Seat cards are down at the Movie Awards!” Jim said from inside the Gibson. “This is where all the A-listers are going to be sitting, and look! MTV Movie Awards isn’t making a decision between Team Edward and Team Jacob,” Jim noted, pointing out that Kristen Stewart will be placed smack-dab in the middle of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, much like her character in “Twilight.” When we caught up with Movie Awards seating manager Stephan Lenart , he explained how he goes about choosing who sits where. “It’s like a puzzle,” he said, adding that he reads up on a ton of entertainment blogs to determine which celebs are in the spotlight before deciding where to seat them. Jim has a special explanation for how one celeb ended up with her seat: “We have Nicki Minaj here with three empty seats. MTV gave her plenty of room for all of her personalities,” he joked about the presenter. Other seating assignments include R&B superstar Trey Songz sitting next to … “Super 8” director J.J. Abrams? “Here we have frequent collaborators Trey Songz and J.J. Abrams, creator of ‘Lost.’ ” Other big attendees and nominees include Emma Stone, Generation Award winner Reese Witherspoon , Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Selena Gomez, Cameron Diaz, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Dempsey, Josh Duhamel and many more. Where everyone will be sitting come the big night could lend itself to some interesting, unexpected moments. Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? ‘We’re country kids, so we’re gonna make country albums,’ Alaina tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, exactly a week since he was crowned an “American Idol” champion, Scotty McCreery told MTV News all about the plans for his debut album (and his thoughts on the whole “Country Bieber” thing, and it should probably come as no surprise to learn that he’s not planning on straying too far from his roots. “It’s gonna be a good ol’ country album,” McCreery said. “I like to have that old flavor in my music, but with a contemporary feel, so we’ll see where that leads me. I think it’ll a good little mix.” But, of course, it won’t just be McCreery releasing a post-“Idol” album: runner-up Lauren Alaina is already prepping her debut disc. And, if you watched the preternaturally perky belter during her time on the show, well, you can probably guess how her debut will sound. “We’re country kids, so we’re gonna make country albums,” she said. “I’m definitely going to have a country album, and if it crosses over, that would be great, but I like new, upbeat songs that people can dance to and sing along to, so, yeah, that’s where I’m headed, hopefully.” So for those keeping track, that’s two country albums coming your way soon. And, in keeping with grand “Idol” tradition, both McCreery and Alaina will begin work on their albums during the American Idols Live! Tour , a task, given their young ages, that would seem to be pretty daunting. But, as it turns out, they’ve actually gotten used to the grind; in fact, it started way back during their time in the ill-fated “Idol” mansion. “I write my own music, I really like to write,” Alaina said. “Scotty and I were actually writing a song together back when we were living in the mansion.” “We’re heading on tour and we’re going to be recording our albums when we’re out on tour, and it’s going to be a busy time,” McCreery added. “But we’re going to do our best to get the music out to you as soon as possible.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
‘We got you, buddy,’ MTV Movie Awards host promises. ‘You’ll be fine.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jason Sudeikis Photo: MTV News Fans would love to see MTV Movie Award nominee and “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson take a stab at hosting “Saturday Night Live.” Well, maybe when “SNL” castmember Jason Sudeikis hosts the Movie Awards this Sunday, he can convince the British heartthrob to come on the show next season. “I think anybody should host [‘SNL’] if it’s something they want to do. Just give it a shot!” Sudeikis told MTV News just steps away from the Gibson Amphitheatre, where the 2011 MTV Movie Awards will be taking place Sunday. “We’re certainly a safe place, a safe haven.” Sudeikis even had some encouraging words for the potential host: “We got you, buddy. You’ll be fine. Hold on to me tightly. We’ll take you through the forest of ‘SNL.’ ” As far as he can remember, Sudeikis has yet to introduce himself to Pattinson. Though he might have met him already — unless that person was actually the star of “Dexter.” “I think I met him in the evening of the Emmys, but at the after-after-afterparty,” he recalled. “So it may have been Michael C. Hall. They may have both been there. But no, it’ll be nice to see him. He’s never hosted ‘SNL.’ Him or Kristen [Stewart]. And Kristen I got to meet during the promos , but Robert I haven’t met yet.” In that promo, Sudeikis gives Stewart a haircut, but we’re not sure fans would be as comfortable watching the Movie Awards host chop off Pattinson’s famous locks. Actor says his angry rants were recorded during ‘one terribly awful moment in time.’ By Gil Kaufman Mel Gibson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images For much of the past year, the only times we’ve heard Mel Gibson’s voice in public were when new snippets of his now-infamous rant tapes were released by Radar Online. You might recall the racist, sexist explosion of rage at Gibson’s ex and mother of his infant daughter, Oksana Grigorieva, on the recordings, which were leaked by an unknown source to the site and revealed a dark, disturbing side to the actor whose biggest movies have often been laced with a sadistic streak. Gibson finally broke his silence on the matter this week, sitting down with a reporter from Deadline Hollywood and explaining that the tapes were made in “one terribly awful moment in time, said to one person in the span of one day, and doesn’t represent what I truly believe or how I’ve treated people my entire life.” After the tape scandal, as well as Gibson’s anti-Semitic rant during a drunken driving arrest in 2006, the actor said he realized people might not want to see him in movies again. But with the long-delayed film “The Beaver” slated to hit screens next month and another film in the works, Gibson is resigned to his box-office fate. “I could easily not act again. It’s not a problem,” he said. He admitted that, “of course” he regrets what he said on the recordings — which included threats on Grigorieva’s life — and that he was angry at himself for what he’d said, but that no one ever expressed any anger toward him about the scandal. And even though he’s been a public figure for three decades, Gibson said he was shocked when the tapes ended up online for the world to hear. “Who anticipates being recorded? Who anticipates that?” he said. “Who could anticipate such a personal betrayal?” But when asked how people are supposed to feel about the racist, sexist slurs he used, Gibson denied ever discriminating against anyone. “I’ve never treated anyone badly or in a discriminatory way based on their gender, race, religion or sexuality — period,” he said. “I don’t blame some people for thinking that though, from the garbage they heard on those leaked tapes, which have been edited. You have to put it all in the proper context of being in an irrationally, heated discussion at the height of a breakdown, trying to get out of a really unhealthy relationship.” The reporter also asked about the dust-up over his scotched cameo in “The Hangover II,” which reportedly was pulled after cast members complained about working with the tainted star. “You have to let that go,” he said, responding to the rumors for the first time. “I sat here and talked to [director] Todd [Phillips] about it. I like Todd. How could you not like Todd? He’s smart and he’s gifted and so are the other people in the film. It’s okay. You just have to let that go.” While some longtime friends such as Whoopi Goldberg and “Beaver” co-star Jodie Foster spoke out on Gibson’s behalf, they were in the minority, and the interviewer wondered how the lack of public support from his peers made Gibson feel. “That doesn’t bother me,” he said. “Why would anyone want to speak publicly and drag themselves through this crap? It seems to add fuel to the fire. Very many people are supportive, of course, but you find out who your friends are. I have many friends, and they’ve been great.” Though legally barred from discussing his custody proceedings with Grigorieva, Gibson did talk about the plea deal he took in the assault case against his ex, which allowed him to avoid jail time. “I was allowed to end the case and still maintain my innocence. It’s called a West plea, and it’s not something that prosecutors normally allow,” he said. “But in my case, the prosecutors and the judge agreed that it was the right thing to do. I could have continued to fight this for years, and it probably would have come out fine. But I ended it for my children and my family. This was going to be such a circus. You don’t drag other people in your life through this sewer needlessly, so I’ll take the hit and move on.” Gibson also declined to talk about his divorce from his wife of 28 years, Robyn, citing the lack of privacy in his life due to his fame, but he did say the tape scandal may be the worst thing he’s put his family through. “The main thing is that it was terribly humiliating and painful for my family, all my kids,” he said. “I had to speak to them with everyone, but my youngest who is blissfully unaware, thank God. Well, she may be aware of it one day, and at that time, I guess I’ll just address that. I spent 30 years keeping them away from this kind of thing and I was quite successful. So why should I start now dragging them through that stuff? You try to manage that.” Related Photos Celebrity Mug Shots
The Mel Gibson Comeback Tour begins in earnest on May 6 when The Beaver opens in limited release after months of delays and date changes. In the lead up to that moment, however, Gibson has broken his long-time silence for a lengthy and in-depth interview with Movieline sister site Deadline that covers everything from his legal troubles to The Beaver to whether he’ll act again to not being in The Hangover Part II .
Lady Gaga’s creative director says her E! series shows ‘the evolution of a dream.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Laurieann Gibson Photo: MTV News Laurieann Gibson is a creative director and choreographer whose client list includes names like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Natalia Kills, Nicki Minaj, Diddy (and Dirty Money), Alicia Keys and Keri Hilson, to name only a few. She’s already had a movie based on her life (Jessica Alba played a Laurieann-like character in “Honey”) and appeared on various TV shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Making the Band,” “Skating With the Stars.” And, of course, she was a Fly Girl alongside J.Lo on “In Living Color.” What’s left on her to-do list? Well, next she’ll be providing a peek into the world of dancing on her new E! show, “The Dance Scene,” which premieres Sunday at 10:30 p.m. ET. ” ‘The Dance Scene’ is basically the most amazing dance show in the world,” she humbly told MTV News. “And it follows me as a creative director. You see how I maintain that creativity.” The show follows Laurieann and her team of dancers and choreographers at Boom Kack studios as they audition, rehearse, choreograph and perform visuals for major events, such as “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” and music videos. It also gives an inside look at the personal lives of the dancers and their ever-present struggle to balance work and life while living up to Gibson’s very high expectations. With her high-profile clients and a truly competitive spirit, Gibson said she really wasn’t nervous about having the cameras following her around for the show. “I wasn’t hesitant because I’m built out of a truthful place,” she said. “The only thing that I have is the truth, so the only thing I fear is a lie. I wasn’t afraid of being truthful, and I just want them to know how great they can be, and I wanted to lift the veil.” So, what should we expect from the show’s first episode? “Sunday’s premiere is quite exciting,” Gibson teased. “I saw the premiere, and I cried. I cried ’cause I was so grateful that [executive producer] Ryan [Seacrest] was not afraid to show me in all of a positive … all of the power that my gift has, and no one’s ever been brave enough to be like, ‘Yes, you are capable.’ And he just let it be, so I just cried. “And we’re at the opening of ‘Divas Live’ with four divas [including Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Keri Hilson],” she continued. “It’s just everything that’s going to happen on this season: It’s power packed; it’s an incredible show. It’s not just another corny dance show. It isn’t. It’s not even really a dance show. It’s the life of a dancer and the transition and the evolution of a dream.”
The ‘Country Strong’ star and the ‘Glee’ actor have recorded a version of ‘Over the Rainbow’ for his upcoming release. By Aly Semigran Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Morrison Photo: GETTY/ Michael Tran Holly Holliday will be making sweet music with Will Schuester once more. Translating from Gleek speak, Oscar-winning-actress-turned-singing-staple Gwyneth Paltrow will be crooning yet another number with Matthew Morrison. Entertainment Weekly reports that Paltrow will appear on Morrison’s upcoming solo album, which is due out on May 10. On “Glee,” recurring guest Paltrow — who plays flaky substitute teacher Holliday — has covered Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You” and Prince’s “Kiss,” the latter of which she performed with Morrison’s Mr. Schue. Now, the Golden Globe-nominated Morrison is having the “Country Strong” star help him out on his debut record, on a tune that’s become almost synonymous with his “Glee” character: “Over the Rainbow.” As Morrison told EW, “People kind of know me for that song now.” The Broadway-trained actor not only used the timeless “Wizard of Oz” number for his “Glee” audition, but also sang it with co-star Mark Salling (who released his own solo effort, Pipe Dreams , in 2010) during the season 1 finale — both times accompanying himself on ukulele. “I wanted to do a duet with a female. I thought that was a good song to do, and we really did a different arrangement of it,” Morrison explained about the version he recorded for his album. “It’s a lot of strings, and it’s beautiful.” Morrison admitted that he felt nervous about approaching Paltrow to see if she’d participate in the recording. “The hardest part of doing this album was asking these people favors, like Elton [John] and her,” he said. “I’m so not that guy.” In addition to Paltrow and John, Morrison also has ‘NSYNC member JC Chasez lined up for a duet on a song titled “Dancing in the Rain.” While there’s no word yet on who, if any, of his “Glee” castmates will appear on the record — both had championed to get their own duets on the album — co-star Jenna Ushkowitz has already been singing its praises . Ushkowitz, who plays glee-club member Tina Cohen-Chang on the show, told MTV News on the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January, “His music is really great.” She went on to say that Morrison “made his own sound” on the album, while adding that it was “a little bit of Justin Timberlake … [and] symphonic-sounding.” Morrison has yet to announce a title for album, though the actor did reveal to MTV News at Clive Davis’ post-Grammy bash in February that ” My Name ” has been considered as a possibility.
