On his debut 1994 album, Illmatic, God’s Son lightly touched on his first forays into fatherhood, and as his catalog grew, so did his subject matter. In 2004, he saluted his own pop, Olu Dara, and even collaborated with his old man on his “Bridging the Gap” single. But this year on Father’s Day, the Queensbridge rap great plans to toss a nod to all dads with a special brunch in his native New York City. “I’m doing a Father’s Day brunch to just celebrate the fathers out there,” Nas told MTV News on Tuesday. “It’s important that we acknowledge that, because family is a very important thing, and Mother’s Day is #1, but every once in a while, let’s remember the fathers too.” For the brunch, Nasir hooked up with New York radio station Hot 97 to hold a contest. Fans wrote in and explained what makes their dad great, and the writers of the best entries get to spend the day with the rap star. It all falls in line with Nas’ latest single, “Daughters.” Rather than romanticize the role that dads play in their children’s lives, Esco tells a story of real-life mistakes that both he and his teenage daughter Destiny Jones have made throughout the years. “When I cut the record, it was like my daughter was on Twitter and tweeting crazy stuff, and I’m like, ‘Yo, what are you doin’?’ ” Nas recalled. The rapper soon realized that his girl had a public persona online much like a rapper would through his music and videos. By tweeting pictures of condoms and sending other suggestive messages, Destiny came off as a wild child when various blog sites picked up on her activities. “She was creating this image on Twitter, this raunchy kinda style that was more for the Internet world, but not realizing people pick up these sorta things and put it on their websites,” he explained. “I think my record is me being angry at her, angry at myself and just really shouting out to fathers out there.” While “Daughters” is new, the type of self-reflection the Illmatic MC displays on the record is not dissimilar from other records in his catalog. On his 2002 LP God’s Son, Nas opened up about his mother’s death from cancer on the song “Dance.” It’s his introspection that truly makes Nas great. “I understand people might not get it, but this is how I express myself,” he said. Mother Injects Heroin Into 12-Year-Old Daughter More Than 200 Times A Pennsylvania mother of two is accused of getting her teenage daughter hooked on heroin and injecting her with the drug hundreds of times when she was too weak to do it herself. Authorities say that Brandi Baumgardner, 38, of Beaver Springs, began smoking marijuana with her daughter when the girl was 12 years old, The Daily Item reports. The girl, whose name is being withheld due to the nature of the case, told police that she began using harder drugs, like heroin, when she was 14. The now 14-year-old says that she has abused prescription pills and crack cocaine, in addition to heroin and marijuana. Baumgardner allegedly injected the child with heroin about 200 times when she was too “sick” to do it by herself. A 22-year-old Beaver Springs man is also accused of shooting the teen up — in exchange for sex. The girl says that Robert Thomas Hannick gave her suboxone, a drug prescribed for opioid dependence. Hannick denied that he provided the girl with drugs, authorities said. It is unclear how Hannick came into contact with the teen, or what connection, if any, he has to Baumgardner. B-b-but wait it gets worse. Baumgardner admitted that she and her daughter had a drug problem when she was interviewed by state police, according to court documents obtained by The Daily Item. The daughter told authorities that her mother would sometimes take her to the hospital with a fake illness to get prescription drugs. The 14-year-old also says that she and her mother would share Fentanyl patches. Fentanyl is a prescription pain killer that is 100 times more powerful than morphine. Fans of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages may throw tomatoes when they see the big screen version; director Adam Shankman , screenwriter Justin Theroux and even Tom Cruise himself made some major changes to the plot of the stage show. Some make the edgy musical more family friendly, but others sharpen the story. Will fans embrace their toned-down Rock of Ages movie? In the film version Cruise stars as Stacee Jaxx , a legendary hair metal rocker with existential issues. Meanwhile, at The Bourbon Room, where Jaxx is performing his last show before going solo, Sherrie ( Julianne Hough ) and Drew (Diego Boneta) are falling in love. Sherrie just moved to L.A. to pursue her dreams; Drew has been paying his dues and gets the chance to open for Jaxx, but the rock n’ roll world splits up the young lovers. But exactly how Rock of Ages unfolds from there differs notably from the Tony-nominated stage musical. Movieline spoke with director Shankman, writer Theroux, and star Hough about five major changes in the Rock of Ages movie, for better and worse. 1. Sherrie and Stacee no longer, uh, do it A major plot point in the stage musical is that Sherrie sleeps with Stacee during the “I Wanna Know What Love Is” number and that’s what leads to her split from Drew. In the movie, the incident is reduced to a misunderstanding involving a spilled bottle of scotch — Drew gets the wrong idea when he sees Stacee zipping up his pants in close proximity to Sherrie — which kinda makes Drew look like a moron. In the stage version, Stacee later comes back to Sherrie when she is working at a gentleman’s club, where she gives him a lap dance. Oddly, Shankman went ahead and shot the lap dance scene with Hough and Cruise, but took it out of the movie. “‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’ was the duet that I did with Tom and it is bad frickin’ ass,” Hough revealed at the Rock of Ages press day. “I mean, literally ass . No literally, this was the sexiest but roughest performance in the movie and I think it was a little bit too much for people. I think that people, especially women, didn’t really like Sherrie after that.” It wasn’t just women, but a very specific group of women, said Shankman. “Super easy to explain,” Shankman said of the scenes that didn’t test well pre-release. “It really upset mothers. The mothers literally turned against her character because her character sold out so much and she was such an animal in the scene. On top of which, where that scene was placed, it was at the top of the third act and you just want her to get to the Bourbon with those records. It was this huge deviation from the story in order to just do this number.” It also makes sense as a story omission because without their sex scene, what’s the point of a lap dance? Shankman said empowering teenage girls in the audience was the most important factor. “The number, frankly, it is on the extended version and will be on Netflix and all that, you’ll understand why it got cut because it really upset mothers,” Shankman said. “I was like, I can’t have mothers saying to their teenage daughters, ‘No, you can’t go see this movie because Julianne Hough is lap dancing Tom Cruise in a G-string — [and doing it] very well.’” 2. Stacee Jaxx’s redemption On stage, Jaxx remains a creep and flees the country dodging statutory rape charges. Not only would this ending be irrelevant to the new story, it would also be a lame and creepy move for a Tom Cruise movie. Now the climax of the film involves Jaxx reading an article written by a reporter (Malin Akerman) in Rolling Stone. For the first time, Jaxx sees how he and his management screwed over hard-working music promoters like the owners of The Bourbon Room. To make amends, Jaxx returns to the Bourbon for a free benefit show, thus paving the way for a real finale where Sherrie and Drew join Jaxx on tour — and giving Cruise’s Jaxx a means of redemption. Screenwriter Justin Theroux credited Cruise himself with the new ending. “That was actually an invention of Tom,” Theroux said. “He was like, ‘This guy needs to connect somewhere at the end of the movie.’ He treats it like it’s a dramatic part and he says, ‘No matter what, you still need to have these motivating factors and you need to have this. There needs to be a beginning, middle and an end to this guy. It can’t just be a guy who’s just floating around being funny. He actually has to have something to perform.’ The character of Stacee Jaxx was looking for something and being so famous that he couldn’t even identify it. That thing is, in our movie, love and someone telling the truth. And then also how do we resolve that in a comedic way? [After] that scene where he’s walking and makes out with a girl on his way to make out with the girl — how would that guy find love? That was really the fun part of creating that.” 3. New songs added, some songs gone Of course, it would be hard for any movie adaptation to keep every single song from its stage iteration, so a few rock classics had to go. Rock of Ages had the unusual problem of obtaining even MORE music than the stage show, and having to make sure to find places for them in the story. “Well, the movie couldn’t be two hours and 40 minutes long, which is basically the show,” Shankman said. “I also had the opportunity that the play didn’t have — Def Leppard, Joan Jett and Guns n’ Roses opened up their catalogs to the movie, which I would have to attribute to Mr. Cruise’s involvement. I never talked to the guys but I would think that that is what sort of did it. On top of which, the Hairspray cred, people knew that I wasn’t going to make fun of anything.” Thanks to that, we now get to hear Cruise sing “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” Worth it. 4. A whole new family values subplot The plot of the stage show involves two developers battling a city planner over a Sunset Strip land deal, a pretty convoluted angle involving the politics of historical landmarks and zoning districts. The movie invents the character of the mayor’s wife (Catherine Zeta Jones), who is protesting The Bourbon Room on moral grounds, as a Christian crusader against rock n’ roll. It’s clean, simple and pays off when the reasons for her repression are revealed. In the film, the mayor’s wife steals the song “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” from her land developer counterparts in the musical; it becomes the anthem for her church protest group. 5. Goodbye, Fourth Wall The biggest change musical buffs will notice is that the movie Rock of Ages has no narrator. The stage show not only had a character narrating the story, but it also broke the fourth wall and addressed the audience. The climax of the stage show had the characters realize some playwright gave them a sad ending, so they go and change it. Meta humor is all well and good but in a movie that might have felt like a cheap cop out. Shankman decided to tell the story linearly, so it has a traditional, feel-good movie plot. The characters succeed because of their own actions, not thanks to some clever meta-device. In taking out the narrator, Shankman decided to make it Sherrie’s story (which also makes it more important that she not lose the audience with her sexual exploits — see #1.). “By taking out the narrator I had to give it the point of view of somebody, and I thought it would be best to give it to the person who’s new to Los Angeles,” Shankman said. I met Scooter at the Today Show and Adam at a Cody Simpson Concert. Then, I found at that they were going to be playing in the Coach Bob Memorial Basketball Tournament only 45 minutes from my house! My belieber friend, Alyssa, and I decided we had to go. After much persuading of our parents, we finally convinced my dad to take me. As soon as we got there we met up with other Beliebers and watched the Brauns, Matt Graham (Cody Simpson’s manager), and Brad Haugen (who ran the event in memory of his dad) all play basketball. We first met Adam (who by the way is extremely attractive) and I got to talk to him about volunteering for Pencils of Promise . Then, we got to talk to Brad who is the nicest guy ever. When we asked him for a picture he said, “Do you guys want Scooter in this?” We told him we wanted one with just him and he was a little bit surprised. No other Beliebers there asked for a picture or talked to him. After hanging out with him for a while, he went and got Scooter who came over to us. Brad had tweeted about how out of shape Scooter was so we asked his opinion on the matter. He said, “It’s true. It’s all true.” He did hit the game winning shot though! We got to talk to Scooter for a little but he was there for Brad and to support Pencils of Promise so we let him be unlike other girls. Fun fact: Scooter’s niece is probably the cutest girl I’ve ever seen. Overall, my Braun experiences have been amazing and I wouldn’t have asked for anything else. Scooter: you’re amazing!! My name is Léa, I’m 16 and a half and I really want to tell you my story. I don’t know how to begin. I’ve been a Belieber since September 2009. I remember the date, but that is not important. I live in South West of France . My mother said to me, “We are going to London” and you know what? Justin was probably going to be there too. “Never Say Never” stayed in my head. I said to her, “I want to meet him, to see him, just two seconds, no matter what”. I spent 4 hours outside his hotel, but he never come to the window. I met some extraordinary people, I met some Beliebers, it was great, but no Justin. I came back to France. I didn’t feel right at school or at home. Then heard that Justin was coming to Paris on June 1st. Everything was happening so fast. I called into the radio station “NRJ” in order to win tickets for the showcase. The guy said to me that I can come to the radio’s show and try to sing and win tickets. I called my mother to explain the situation. I took the train to Paris (which took me 5 hours). I sang “One Time” in front of some people who were in the studio, the crew and people who were listening on the radio. Click here to watch the video. Then I won the tickets the following day. Beliebers was waiting for Justin at the radio station. On Friday, June 1st, it was a BIG dream. The other belieber called me on my phone and said, “I have two girls who want to meet Justin, so if you want, I can invite you to go Grand Journal (a huge TV show), are you happy?” Oh my God. I was going to meet Justin, my idol, TWICE IN ONE DAY? That was crazy, incredible. My friend was late for the show, so we had to hurry up. We entered the TV studio. We had to sit on the floor, the studio was full. It ended up being the BEST WAY to be close to him. He sang ‘Boyfriend’ and touched my hand. He also did an interview and at the end, he came to us and hugged a girl. I touched his neck, he smiled, I smiled. I was so close to him during those seconds, but then he had to go. He performed, “Die in your arms” away from the cameras. He looked at us, in my direction, with his nice smile and his bright eyes. I began to cry. It was very emotional. He left the studio. My uncle saw him in his car going to the showcase. We arrived on the site for the next TV show. There were MANY PEOPLE waiting to enter. He sang “Baby”, “Never Say Never”, “Be Alright”, “Die In Your Arms”, “As Long As You Love Me” and “Boyfriend”. I didn’t scream, I couldn’t say anything, I was open-mouthed. I was so stressed and worried for Justin because I heard he was sick. My friend told me to keep calm and not to cry. It was so hard. It’s my idol, I don’t want him to be sad, not well, sick, or something like that. Thank you to everyone who helped me to do this, and people who read the text.
