‘There were mornings where I woke up and it was just like, ‘OK, I just need to stay in bed and try again tomorrow,’ ‘ he tells MTV News. By Jim Cantiello David Cook in his video for “The Last Goodbye” Photo: RCA David Cook is not a morning person. Throughout his new album, This Loud Morning, available everywhere June 28, there are numerous references to falling skies, suns and stars. The “night keeps calling” him. On the nearly six-minute closer “Rapid Eye Movement,” he hoarsely sings his desire to “kill the blinding lights of day.” Who could blame him for wanting to escape reality? In the year that preceded the studio sessions for This Loud Morning, Cook experienced new highs of a successful post-“American Idol” world tour and crushing lows after losing older brother Adam to cancer. “The world around me got a little loud, so there were mornings where I woke up and it was just like, ‘OK, I just need to stay in bed and try again tomorrow,’ ” Cook recently told MTV News. David stayed in bed, so to speak, by crafting a dozen ditties that each feature subtle dreamlike studio flourishes. Songs blend into one another. Melodies and themes reappear. This Loud Morning is not a “concept album,” per se, but it’s the most focused and complete artistic statement an “Idol” winner has created since Kelly Clarkson’s personal My December from 2007. (Incidentally, both were released by 19 Recordings/ RCA Records.) “The last thing I wanna do is make a record where it’s like, ‘Here’s the first song, and that ends; three-second break. Here’s the next song, that ends; three-second break.’ I don’t want to make a collection of songs; I want to make an album. That’s the goal. I feel like with this album, I really outdid my prior endeavor,” Cook said. To achieve David’s dream-inspired vision, he and executive producer Matt Serletic spent 18 months adding music boxes, echo-y strings, boys’ choirs, Theremins and sitars to Cook’s grungy guitars and pop-metal melodies. Some instruments are easier to pick out than others. David promises “headphone nuggets” on repeated listens. (Four spins in, I still couldn’t find a Theremin if my life depended on it.) As “arty” as that might sound, fans will be pleased to hear that This Loud Morning is populated with enough massive choruses to put a Monster Ballads compilation CD to shame. Every single track erupts with an arena-ready midtempo sing-along, tailor-made for lighters above heads. There are guitar solos straight out of Bryan Adams’ ’90s oeuvre. Guitarist Neal Tiemann channels U2’s The Edge on “We Believe,” an anthem about blind faith. Later, “Paper Heart” bursts at the seams thanks to an earworm of a lick that Coldplay members wish they thought of first. Tiemann and bandmate Andy Skib deliver the album’s biggest surprise, co-writing (with Cook) the spacious and timeless ballad “Goodbye to the Girl.” David gently croons over “Golden Slumbers”-esque chords, “When did all the gold around us rust, turning all the love we had to dust/ It took the best of you.” It’s a side of his voice fans haven’t heard since he belted Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night” on “Idol.” Eventually, the track builds with swirling rock organs, strings and a doozy of a chorus that you swear Journey’s Steve Perry is singing. The topic of love dominates the majority of Cook’s new songs. The sweeping power-waltz “Fade Into Me” — co-written by David, Jamie Houston and Better Than Ezra’s Kevin Griffin — finds the rocker tapping into his sensual side. “Fade into me, fade into you/ The two of us melting together until we become something new,” goes the chorus. Pretty sure he’s not talking about a conjoined twin. Ahem. Two tracks later, his lover has grown distant. David pleads, “Give me one more try before we say goodbye,” but then, the song’s called “Take Me As I Am,” so one can only assume that Cook himself isn’t willing to change. Eventually he accepts his relationship’s “doomed” status on kickoff single “The Last Goodbye,” co-penned with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. Lyrically, This Loud Morning never explicitly references Adam’s death, but knowing Cook’s history may give certain songs a deeper meaning. “Time marches on without you,” David sighs at the end of “Time Marches On,” just as a funereal vocal arrangement takes over your speakers. What exactly are he and his partner-in-crime hoping to run away from in “Right Here, With You?” Time? No matter what the universe has in store for them, David finishes each heavy chorus with a quiet refrain, as if it’s a bedside lullaby. “I’m on your side.” Cook takes things further on the piano-driven shuffle “Hard to Believe.” “When did you lose any sense? And when did you find that you can’t hold on?” he asks. Three minutes later, the song has swelled and David repeats, “Just stay with me!” Romantic or otherwise, this is a relationship Cook does not want to see go away. Maybe the overarching theme of This Loud Morning isn’t love or dreams, but rather inevitability. Whether you like it or not, all things must come to an end, be it a day, a dream, a relationship or a life. This Loud Morning concludes with the same haunting music-box melody that begins the opening track, “Circadian.” The bookended structure begs the listener to hit “replay” the same way we all smack the “snooze” button on those dreaded mornings where we don’t want to face the day. David Cook invites you to stay in bed and dream a little longer. You can always try again tomorrow. If you can’t wait until June 28 to hear This Loud Morning, AOL will be streaming it on Monday. Can you imagine Quentin Tarantino helming a “Green Lantern” flick starring one of these dudes? Well, the “Inglourious Basterds” director turned down the chance to take control of the project. And now, here we are. “Green Lantern” opened in theaters Friday (June 16) with Ryan Reynolds as test pilot-turned-superhero Hal Jordan, Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) in the director’s chair, and the film, we’d say, is all the better for it. But how did we arrive at this moment? To answer that question, let’s slip on our power rings and take a trip back into the cinematic past with another MTV News cheat sheet. That’s the only way to discover everything there is to know about “Green Lantern”: Recharging the Lantern After years in development hell, the project seemed finally to be moving forward in August 2008, when the DC Comics property moved back into active development with a script by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green . There was even talk that the movie would begin filming the next spring and that Ryan Gosling would take on the lead role . While Campbell eventually began to eye the film, production didn’t move forward, even though Warner Bros. announced a December 17, 2010, release date. Would filming begin in September ? Would Anton Yelchin (“Star Trek”) become Hal Jordan? What about fellow “Trek” star Chris Pine ? Rumors, rumors, everywhere! Unsurprisingly, the release date was moved back to June 17, 2011. Finally, in July ’09, the ring chose its man: Ryan Reynolds officially landed the role of Hal Jordan . Greeting the Corps “I fell in love with the character when I met with Martin Campbell,” Reynolds told us a few months later. “When I sat down with him, I really got what it is that this guy is all about. When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has balls of titanium, and the other part is that he’s slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of ‘Green Lantern.’ ” No joke. The 3-D film journeys from the shores of America to the most distant planets of the universe. There are aliens galore, a villain who thrives on fear and power rings that harness willpower into fantastical manifestations, like giant machine guns and supercharged fists. Jordan finds himself at the center of it all, after he’s chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps, an army of fighters chosen to protect the universe from all evils. The baddies they must confront in the film are Dr. Hector Hammond, a scientist turned lumpy-headed villain, and Parallax, a smoky enemy capable of engulfing planets and who threatens to snuff out all life forms. Into this mess steps Jordan with two quests: stop the bad guys and get the girl — a lovely test pilot named Carol Ferris, played by Blake Lively. Lively nabbed the part in January 2010, and the rest of the cast soon followed: Mark Strong as the Lantern named Sinestro, Peter Sarsgaard as Hammond and Tim Robbins as his father, Senator Hammond. We got our first peek at Reynolds in his motion-capture gear in May. It’d be another two months until we peeped the actor in glowing-green character . Not everyone was pleased with what they saw. “There has to be a little healthy debate about it,” Reynolds told us later . “I mean, that’s important. If it were just slanted one way or the other, I don’t think it would be that satisfying. And truthfully, we’ve only seen a tiny glimpse of the suit, you know, we haven’t seen it in motion. And we haven’t seen the full suit as well.” Green Lantern’s Light The first trailer popped up in November, and once again fans were less than impressed. But Reynolds didn’t sweat it . “I’m not worried about it,” he told us in April. “We’ve never been worried about it, because we saw the early concepts and we saw how well they worked. Unfortunately, that was stuff you can’t just release and show to people, because it needs to be perfected and all that stuff. I’m not worried about it at all.” Public opinion started to change this summer at WonderCon and CinemaCon, as fans got their eyes on fresh “Green Lantern” footage . “The first time I saw it was just breathtaking,” Reynolds told us recently. “I think the first time it hit me that we really did it right was in WonderCon,” he told us recently. “I’d been shooting in Africa at the time, so I flew back just to be there, and I was exhausted, and they put up this 10 or 11 minutes of footage, and you could feel it going like a wave through the audience.” Breathtaking was exactly our opinion of an eye-popping poster we debuted in April — one that featured a slew of Corps aliens like Tomar-Re, Abin Sur and Kilowog. Another trailer arrived in May: more aliens, more action and more of Reynolds’ sometimes goofy, sometimes badass superhero. It was more than enough to get us pumped about the movie to come. “For me, what attracted me to it most was the space-epic nature of it,” Reynolds told us at the MTV Movie Awards in early June. “I just loved that you had this film that was an origin story, that’s not really starting in the third act like a lot of them do. I grew up with movies like that. I love movies like that. My name is Zaire, I’m 15, and I’m a true belieber. So far, I’ve had two Bieber experiences and they were great! My first one happened on 2/17/11. I was at home on Twitter and Justin was having one of his crazy re-tweeting sprees. Like every other belieber out there, I tweeted him. He was asking us what our favorite song was on his new album, ‘Never Say Never (The Remixes)’. I tweeted him what my favorite songs were, and sent it, not expecting anything. I noticed that my tweet had a few typos in it, so I tried to go back and change it. Once I did, I went onto Justin’s page, and I screamed. There was my tweet on his page! It happened at10:05 PM on February 17th, 2011 , the one with the typos. I couldn’t believe it! My second Bieber experince happened on 6/11/11. Justin was in the Bay Area in California for a benefit concert in Saratoga, California. I did everything I could to get tickets. I tried winning them off the radio, and checking ticket master for even the worst seats possible. I wanted to go so badly! At around noon that day, I figured there wasn’t a chance I was going to go, so I stop trying. At around 1:30pm, I was on Twitter when I saw a tweet that my friend tweeted, asking if anyone wanted to go to the Justin Bieber concert tonight, because her friend was selling tickets. I thought, “Omg, this can not be happening right now!” So I jumped at the chance. I contacted my friend who knew the girl that was selling the tickets, and she said the price was 2 for $200. One ticket for $100 dollars, no way! So while we were trying to coordinate how and when to get the tickets, the price had suddenly rose from $100 to $300! Suddenly my friend couldn’t go anymore, and I thought my chances of seeing Justin Bieber were over. I was so upset! Just when I was about to give up all hope, my friend contacted me and told me that the price went back down to $200, but I negotiated with her and got the price down to $150, because she just really wanted to sell the tickets. Since my other friend still couldn’t go, I called my best friend Alex and asked her if she wanted to go, and she said yes! She came over and we made our shirts and then my friend came over and we paid for our tickets. Finally the tickets were ours! The venue was small and it was on top of this huge mountain. We finally made it inside and it was chaos! We saw Kenny and Scooter, but we didn’t go up to them because they were too far away from us . We found our seats, which were actually pretty good, considering we didn’t have floor seats, and chilled until finally, it started! It was great! Justin is an amazing performer. He can totally hype the crowd. Right before he performed Eenie Meenie, we took a moment of silence and prayed for Sean Kingston with him. I thought that was so sweet of him to do! When he sang my favorite song, ‘That Should Be Me’, I almost started crying! I couldn’t believe I was there! I can finally say that I’ve been to a Justin Bieber concert! While we were waiting outside for my parents to pick us up, a golf cart drove by, and it had the dancers in it! I have a huge crush on Nick Demoura, and he was literally 10 feet away from me! I freaked out! These 2 Bieber experiences, are days that I will remember forever, but it also teaches me to never give up. If I really want something, I have to work for it. Justin really teaches us that with everything that he does. He’s only 17 and he’s accomplished so much, yet he’s still trying to do more! So thank you Justin for making my dreams come true. I hope I can meet you one day to tell you how much I appreciate you, but for now I’ll keep supporting you with all my heart. Okay, we have to draw the line somewhere with this foolishness. New potential Twitter-related troubles arose for Rep. Anthony Weiner on Friday, after Delaware police reportedly spoke with a 17-year-old high school girl about “direct online communications” she’s had with the disgraced congressman. Weiner confirmed the communications late in the day, but denied that anything inappropriate took place. The police “asked to speak with the girl’s mother about the daughter’s contact with Weiner,” Fox News reported, adding that one of the network’s reporters happened to be there when the cops showed up. The visit by the police was later confirmed by POLITICO. The girl, whose name was withheld by Fox but who told the reporter she’s “doing OK,” left with her mother and the police, the network said, although it was unclear if there was a further conversation somewhere else. A Weiner spokeswoman emailed a statement in response to the reports that confirmed his contact with the girl, but denied anything was amiss. “According to Congressman Weiner, his communications with this person were neither explicit nor indecent,” said the statement. “They were made aware of an alleged contact between Congressman Anthony Weiner and an area teen,” said New Castle County police spokeswoman Officer Tracey Duffy, according to the Post. “The teen has been interviewed and disclosed no information regarding any criminal activity.” Fox reported that “sources close the student” said the Delaware girl was among his thousands of Twitter followers, signing up for his feed after watching him speak during a trip to the Capitol with her school on April 1. He reportedly sent her a direct message over Twitter on April 13. It was unclear whether there was any further communication. There’s no reason a grown-a** man should be direct messaging a teenager! ‘They were like, ‘We want to do exactly what you’ve been doing,’ ‘ the ‘Gucci Gucci’ femcee tells MTV News of why she inked with Columbia. By Steven Roberts Kreayshawn Photo: Michelle Crowe A month ago Kreayshawn was the girl “cooking” and partaking in other recreational activities with Lil B the Based God in a random online video (they’re listening to Soulja Boy’s “Dat Piff,” naturally). And honestly, unless you were from the Bay Area, hung out around Fairfax in Los Angeles or had your finger on the pulse of underground hip-hop, you probably didn’t know her name. That quickly changed about four weeks ago when she dropped the video for her song “Gucci Gucci.” The video featured the pint-size, Bay Area rapper performing alongside Odd Future’s Left Brain, Jasper Dolphin and many of their friends, at OF’s stomping grounds on L.A.’s Fairfax Avenue. At a house party, she’s seen rapping about the swag dripping out her “ovaries.” The video soon made her an instant sensation on several blogs and eventually earned the interest of several record labels. Earlier this week, it was announced that Kreayshawn had signed with Columbia Records . MTV News caught up with one-third of the White Girl Mob on Thursday afternoon, and she said the deal offered her an incredible amount of artistic freedom, which she was already enjoying. “Columbia was the best because they were like, ‘We want to do exactly what you’ve been doing.’ I’ve been directing music videos, so they’re like, ‘We want you to keep doing that.’ I do a little graphic design, and they had me make my logo. The music that I’m making — ‘Gucci Gucci’ — [is] going to be the single that they push,” Kreayshawn told us. The femcee also said she’s conscious that some have already pegged her as a viral, one-hit wonder, but promised she has a lot more to offer. Still, she admitted, it can be frustrating to have critics put her in a box. There’s a lot of Kreayshawn material — beyond her 2010 mixtape Kittys x Choppas — the public hasn’t heard yet. On the flip side, the MC is enjoying the love from fans. The best part of the recent music industry whirlwind, Kreayshawn said, is how organically her early success has unfolded. “We never made the [‘Gucci Gucci’] video with the intention of anything. We knew it was a great song, we knew that the video [was] going to be dope.
