Why Lee Dewyze Will Win ‘American Idol’

Crystal Bowersox might be the front-runner, but so was Adam Lambert, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Lee Dewyze Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox I hate to break it to you, fellow members of Bowersox Nation, but our girl isn’t going to win “American Idol.” It pains me to write that, as I love Crystal and all that she stands for (shoot, I feel like I know her ), and I really want her to win, but it’s just not in the cards. Not with Lee Dewyze still shrugging in the background, anyway. See, no matter how much Simon Cowell wants to shout it, “American Idol” is not “a singing competition”; it’s a popularity contest. If the show were based on vocal ability, producers would have just ended the competition last week, after Bowersox leveled the room with her tearful take on “People Get Ready,” or last month, when she lapped the field with “Me And Bobby McGee,” or, well, you catch my drift. At this point, the questions about her “marketability” or “relevancy” are moot: Her voice is timeless. She has proven that she can sing anything, anytime, anywhere, and she can do it better than anyone else on the show. So of course, she will still end up losing. Because “Idol” isn’t based on talent (I mean, it is up to a certain point — usually about the time we reach the top 10, then things tend to get all high-schooly). It’s based on intangible stuff like “familiarity” and “likability.” And those are the two categories in which Bowersox doesn’t dominate. For better or worse, viewers tend to vote for the contestant they feel they have the most in common with, the one they feel is a nice person, the one they already feel like they hear four times an hour on the radio. And more often than not, that contestant happens to be a slightly scruffy, well-proportioned, slightly hunky, kinda underdoggy, totally inoffensive guy. And this year, that guy is Lee Dewyze. Let me stop here for a second and say that I don’t dislike Dewyze in any way. I actually don’t have any kind of opinion of him (and I don’t think I’m in the minority by saying that), which doesn’t exactly bode well for his post-“Idol” career. After thinking about it for a full five minutes, here’s about all I can come up with to say about him: He seems like a pretty nice guy. He has good teeth. He is probably nice to animals and children and the elderly. Sometimes he wears a goofy knit cap. He plays the kind of bland, radio-ready sorta-rock that continues to mystify me. Of course, none of this makes him interesting — and, frankly, when he speaks, I tend to lose consciousness — but it makes him a shoo-in to win season nine of “American Idol.” “Idol” voters don’t want “interesting”; they want “nice,” “dependable,” “relatable.” This doesn’t change — or, at least, it hasn’t for the past three seasons. Just look at last year, when everyone was rushing to crown Adam Lambert the champion. I argued that Kris Allen would win “Idol” because “he seems like a solid, trustworthy guy — like a combination cowboy/firefighter, or a youth minister (which I think he actually is). If you think about it for a few seconds, you’ll probably realize that you know someone exactly like him — and you are not alone. Everyone in America knows someone like Kris Allen. Or, at least, more people know someone like him than they do Adam Lambert.” As it turns out, I was right. So with something like four weeks left in the competition, I’m calling it for Lee Dewyze. He reminds me too much of Allen in every possible way, right down to the fact that most of the media that covers “Idol” seems hell-bent on making him the “underdog,” despite all evidence to the contrary. Plus, to be honest, it’s not like Crystal has really salted this one away, either, what with the whole “I-quit, no-wait-I-don’t” drama surrounding her last week. There are too many holes in her story. She is considered too weird by the people who actually vote on this thing, and eventually — probably in the finale — her luck will run out. I am not alone in thinking this, either. Just Tuesday, I spoke to a pair of “Idol” experts for a piece I was working on called “Can Crystal Bowersox Lose ‘American Idol’?” Sadly, they both agreed that, yes, she could, and it would probably be to Dewyze. Of course, I’m willing to be proven wrong — I just don’t think I will be. America will go for Lee Dewyze, because they’ve gone for him in season seven (David Cook) and eight (Allen). They will go for him because he’s the safe, familiar choice, and because he seems nice. But most of all, they will go for him because he’s not Crystal Bowersox. That’s a shame, but it’s not exactly shocking. America likes things safe, and this is ” American Idol,” after all. Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com .

‘Hills’ Buzz Moment #3: Lauren Conrad Chooses Her Man Over Paris

LC turns down Teen Vogue ‘s overseas internship to spend the summer with then-boyfriend Jason Wahler. By Jocelyn Vena Lauren Conrad Photo: MTV The old saying goes that before you find your prince, you have to kiss a few frogs. In Lauren Conrad’s case, one of the bigger frogs happened to be former “Laguna Beach” co-star Jason Wahler. By the time Jason made the transition to “The Hills,” the pair were already experiencing their share of problems. Still, she decided to get serious and give Jason one more chance as summer approached and the series’ first season drew to a close. Although she probably knew that Jason wasn’t right for her, LC couldn’t resist giving the troubled relationship another go. “It’s like there’s this guy who I really like, and he’s done something really terrible to me,” she said to Jason. “But I still like him.” Even friend/roommate Heidi Montag could see there might be trouble ahead. Heidi warned her then-bestie, “Just be careful with Jason.” LC was determined to make it work: “I got my guard up this time. It’s fine.” But in spite of all the fighting, including a major blowup on New Year’s Eve, Lauren held on to Jason through the bad times — and the good. And it may have been those good times that prompted Lauren to make one potentially life-changing decision. ‘The Hills’ Most Buzzed-About Moments – #4: Heidi Moves Out … And On – #5: Kristin Cavallari Declares War – #6: Heidi And Spencer’s Many Weddings – #7: Holly Gets Tipsy At Speidi’s Rehearsal Dinner – #8: Heidi Montag Crashes Lauren’s Party – #9: Justin Is Renamed ‘Justin Bobby’ – #10: Stephanie Pratt’s Job Interview “Today, Lisa Love offered me an internship for the whole summer [in Paris],” LC told her beau of her Teen Vogue boss’ jaw-dropping offer. Lauren decided to stay with Jason, which only proved to be another source of tension in their doomed relationship. (“I don’t want you out of my life, but I can’t be normal with you,” she later told him.) It was also a mistake in her career. As Lisa Love put it: “Lauren didn’t go to Paris. She’s going to always be known as the girl who didn’t go to Paris.” What are some of your favorite “Hills” moments? ‘Hills’ Final Season Has ‘Lots Of Drama,’ Lo And Stephanie Promise

‘Audrina and Lo set me up on so many dates,’ Stephanie Pratt tells MTV News of the new episodes, premiering Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Stephanie Pratt and Lo Bosworth Photo: MTV News As fans gear up for the Tuesday night premiere of the final season of “The Hills,” Lo Bosworth and Stephanie Pratt promise that — while the past five seasons have given us amazing moments — the best is yet to come. “Lots of drama,” Bosworth told MTV News when asked what castmate Kristin Cavallari has brewing for season six. “Kristin’s our girl, though. We really are all friends. … We just have so much fun together. We love her no matter what she does. That’s just how it is.” While Kristin’s dating drama became a recurring season-five story line, Lo says her own love life could “potentially” wind up onscreen too. But Bosworth played coy: “I don’t really know.” Pratt was more forthcoming: “I’m dating someone on the show and I’m just so picky. It’s so bad. Audrina and Lo kind of set me up on so many dates, and half of them are good guys. … Audrina hooks me [up with], like, guys who … my God, I don’t even know where she finds them!” Last month, Bosworth and Pratt spoke to MTV News about “The Hills” farewell . To Bosworth, it still seemed strange. “We were, I think, anticipating it was going to come to an end, but it’s sort of surreal, ’cause this has been our lives,” she said. “And to have that change is sort of scary, but we’re all really excited.” Pratt thinks now is an ideal time to say goodbye, with the “Hills” stars having gotten older and wiser since the show’s debut four years ago. “I called Lo right after I heard [about the show ending] just to see if she knew,” Pratt said. “I pretty much figured it was the last season. We all have really grown up, and we really don’t go to nightclubs every night anymore. We’re just, like, more mature. I mean, we still fight with each other, but it’s the sixth season. I’ve never known a reality show to go as far as ‘The Hills.’ ” Are you sad to see “The Hills” end, or do you think it’s perfect timing? Zahia Dehar the Teen Prostitute’s Outfit of the Day

I am a huge fan of teenage prostitutes, mainly because when I was a teenager, getting pussy was pretty fucking impossible because the girls my age weren’t putting out, but also because she trapped three high profile European Athletes with her vagina, probably extorted them and is getting paid off by them, while getting all the fame she wants, all by the age of 18. Usually it takes a whore a few years to realize that life doesn’t really work out as easily as expected, before she actually becomes a fucking whore…..but this girl started young, cuz there’s no need to fuck around if you know where you want to be, and really there’s no upside to being a whore at 18, cuz there’s no real in scandal at that, but at 17, shit’s next level…speaking of next level, check out this outfit, sure it’s tacky as fuck, like something you’d expect on some cheesy stripper, but she’s wearing it on the street, and if you are a girl, you should do, cuz it will make leaving my house way more fun… Pics via PacificCoastNews

Hey Paula

Leaving American Idol certainly hasn’t cramped Paula Abdul ‘s style. She was pap’ed harder than ever leaving a doctor’s appointment in Beverly Hills. When she said she was forever our girl, we guess she knew what she was talking about.

Allison Iraheta in Latina Magazine: Life is Good!

Allison Iraheta has been off American Idol for almost a full year now, but the singer tells the latest issue of Latina magazine that life is better than ever. “I don’t have to step onto a stage and get judge every week. Now I get to do my own songs and talk to my fans,” she said. “There are all these girls writing my on Twitter… saying [they] love songs like ‘Scars’ because they can totally relate to what I’m singing about. Things are really good right now.” Iraheta will tour this summer with Adam Lambert, who has nothing but amazing things to say about his friend: “She’s so freaking talented… The first time I heard her album, I was in a car with the windows down and I was just dancing and rocking out to it. It’s going to take some time, but she’ll get there.” And where is that place? Allison hopes it’s a level of accomplishment where she’s recognized for being herself, not for having starred on the most popular show on TV. “I don’t want people to see me and immediately think, ‘Oh, that’s the girl with the red hair who was on American Idol . I want them to say, ‘That’s Allison Iraheta. She’s a great artist who makes real music and has something to say – and she rocks.”

Green Day Hope To ‘Force Change’ By Sponsoring Prom For Gay Teen

Lance Bass will also pitch in after a Mississippi high school barred Constance McMillen from her prom. By James Montgomery, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino Green Day Photo: MTV News Constance McMillen, a student at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi, made headlines earlier this year when she was barred from attending senior prom with her longtime girlfriend. When McMillen persisted, the school board announced it was canceling prom entirely. McMillen &#8212 assisted by the American Civil Liberties Union &#8212 sued the school district. In a preliminary ruling, a federal court found that the Itawamba County District had violated her First Amendment right to freedom of expression, though the judge stopped short of ordering the school to reinstate the prom. And while the case is still pending, McMillen has found herself some rather unlikely allies, including Green Day, who, along with stars like Lance Bass and “Iron Chef” star Cat Cora, have agreed to sponsor (with the American Humanist Association) a “second-chance” prom, to be held May 8 in Tupelo, Mississippi. It was the kind of thing that the guys in Green Day knew they wanted to get involved in the second they heard McMillen’s story &#8212 even if they didn’t exactly have a ton of experience when it came to proms. “Well, I remember when the news broke about how … they canceled the prom because she wanted to bring her partner to the prom,” Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong said. “And we were talking about it, we were at the theater [for rehearsals of the ‘American Idiot’ musical ] and I remember [bassist] Mike [Dirnt] said, ‘Why don’t we just put on the prom?’ and I was like, ‘That’s a great idea. Why not?’ The weird thing is, I never even went to my prom.” “My high school was a little more open-minded,” Dirnt said. “There were a lot of girls dressed in tuxedoes showing up for the prom. I didn’t live in Mississippi, though. Sometimes you’ve got to force change.” And when MTV News caught up with McMillen on the red carpet for the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles, she was grateful for all the attention she’s received. But the teen says she’s just another girl trying to do what’s right. “I think you should stand up for what you believe in, and that’s all I did,” McMillen said. “I couldn’t control what the school board did or what other people do. … All I did was stand up for what I thought was right, and I think other people should do that too.” What do you think of Constance fighting to attend prom with the date of her choice? Share your thoughts with us in the comments. Related Artists Green Day
