A Wisconsin teacher was recently placed on administrative leave after he allegedly ripped several braids from an 11-year-old student’s scalp. According to WISC-TV , the young girl’s mother, Mikiea Price, claims the assault happened on Feb. 13 by the hands of Madison Metropolitan School District’s acting principal and positive behavior support coach Rob Mueller-Owens. Price states that the incident happened when Mueller-Owens got upset when her daughter and a friend that sprayed some perfume in class. When the girls did not listen to him to stop, they were instructed to leave the class. “When he came in, he asked (my daughter) to step out and she didn’t listen, and didn’t step out and as he walked toward her, she said she went toward the window and just wasn’t following direction, and he told her in front of the whole class, to the teacher, ‘Take the class somewhere else,’” Price told Madison365 . “And (my daughter) said, ‘No, that’s fine. They can stay, I’ll go.’ As the girl was walking out of the classroom, Price said, Mueller-Owens began pushing her out. Soon after, she fell into a row of lockers, where the teacher lost his balance and fell on top of her. It’s believed that somewhere in this scuffle, three of her braids got ripped out. The incident was caught on tape and is currently being reviewed by the Madison police and the school district. The video has yet to be released to the public. A Madison teacher is on leave after a student said he pushed her and pulled out three of her braids (In the photo you can see where those used to be). Now, her child is too afraid to come back to class. “Just the whole experience is just traumatic and devastating and just confusing,” Price told WISC-TV. She added, “I’m just disgusted at this whole incident. You know I send my kid to school to learn, and that’s a place where mothers send their kids to be comfortable in. I just feel violated in so many ways that … this even happened to her.” Price is also disappointed because Mueller-Owen is an expert on restorative discipline practices, which focuses on getting to the root of behavioral problems with positive techniques. “That’s the devastating part about it,” Price said. “That’s the disgusting part about it. To have that much education and that much training and that much knowledge, to be certified with kids and not follow protocol, I think that’s the part that hurt me the most and disappointed me the most.” The Madison Metropolitan School District released the following statement: “As a District, we take any situation of this nature very seriously. All of our students need to be safe and supported in school, and we have a thorough investigation process and protocol that we follow. While we cannot talk about the details of a specific student or personnel situation, it is our responsibility to consider all of the facts of the situation and determine the right next steps. The staff person was put on leave while the situation was investigated. Based on that investigation, the staff person will not return to Whitehorse Middle School, and we are determining next steps. In the past, the company has teamed up to support several social good initiatives, including Chance the Rapper ’s effort to better Chicago Public Schools and making it easier for Americans to get to polling places by offering free and discounted rides on Election Day. For Black History Month, the ride-sharing app is offering free rides to Black-owned businesses, Black museums and other institutions, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. @Lyft is offering free rides in more than 30 cities this month in celebration of Black History Month. https://t.co/w3LuFvqG0u — WSB Radio (@wsbradio) February 14, 2019 The free rides are being offered in over 30 cities, the news outlet writes. In each city, there are one or more locations where free rides can be taken. Among the participating cities are New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Nashville, Oakland, Philadelphia, Washington, Richmond and others. Passengers can get one free ride for a trip that would cost up to $10. “At Lyft, we believe in recognizing, celebrating, and supporting the contributions of incredible Black women and men throughout history and within our communities today,” read a statement released by the company. “That is why during the month of February, we’ll be providing one free ride up to $10* to Black history museums, memorials, and relevant cultural sites, as well as to Black-owned businesses throughout various communities in which we serve.” This February marks the company’s one-year partnership anniversary with Black Girls CODE. Lyft joined forces with the nonprofit as an avenue to increase racial and gender representation in the tech space. Since the inception of the partnership, they’ve been able to raise over $350,000 for the organization. Black Girls CODE is on a mission to provide tech education resources for 1 million girls by 2040. Surprise, surprise! Congratulations are in order for the Brown family! Because Mariah is engaged!!! Did we trick you? A couple of years ago, Mariah told her family that she was gay , and although they struggled with the news a bit at first, they’ve become very accepting. They even liked Audrey the first time Mariah brought her home to meet them , which was nice, because she was definitely nervous about it. It’s also nice that they like her since, you know, they’re getting married. The two ladies met while attending Westminster College in Salt Lake City, and Mariah has said that she had a crush on Audrey before she even came out. They moved to Chicago together last year , and they really do seem to be ridiculously in love. And at the Women’s March last month in Washington D.C., Mariah popped the question. She gave an interview to People about the big news , and she explained that she chose to the location because “We had just started dating when we came for the first time two years ago and it was such a special time for us that I wanted to propose there.” She said that she “can’t exactly pinpoint” the moment she knew Audrey was the one, “but it was pretty early on.” “There are a lot of things about Audge that I am so in love with and I knew that I wanted to love those things for the rest of my life,” she gushed. “She made me a better person and continues to make me a better person.” As for the big moment itself, Mariah recounted that “We were in the middle of where everyone was marching and I was trying to get the ring out of my pocket, where it was stuck.” “I think Audrey was fixing her hair, but I just got down on one kneww and said some sweet things that neither of us can really remember because we were so caught up in the moment.” After that, “She was really sweet and started crying and I was crying and then I put the ring on her, got up and gave her a kiss and someone around us goes ‘Did she say yes?'” “And she totally hadn’t yet!” “Then she said ‘I do! I do!” and then realized that was the wrong thing to say and then said ‘Yes!'”, Mariah continued. “She’s such a sweetheart. The ring is absolutely perfect, if I do say so myself.” It’s been about a month since they got engaged, so how are things going now? “Our friends and family have all been so excited for us!” Mariah said. “I actually think my dad almost cried! He really likes Audrey.” “All of our friends have been so sweet and offering to help and our families are obviously excited to share their input,” she added.
