NAACP’s Ben Jealous: Beck’s Audience Wouldn’t Applaud for Dr. King Speech

Ben Jealous, president of the NAACP, told Eyeblast.tv that if Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech were read to the crowd at the ‘Restoring Honor’ rally, no one would applaud. That’s a round-about way of him calling the crowd racist. So, Glenn Beck’s rally audience is racist. Wow, did Ben Jealous think that up all by himself?

ABC’s Tahman Bradley: Beck Rally’s ‘Crowd Was Almost All White, Giving Critics an Open Door’

On Sunday’s Good Morning America, during a report which focused on FNC host Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally and the hostile reaction from civil rights activists like the Reverend Al Sharpton, ABC correspondent Tahman Bradley asserted that “the crowd was almost all white, giving critics an open door.” After noting that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s niece – Dr. Alveda King – was a speaker at the rally, Bradley noted the racial makeup of Beck’s event: TAHMAN BRADLEY: Dr. King’s own niece, Alveda King, spoke. DR. ALVEDA KING, NIECE OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.: We need to rebuild America. BRADLEY: An obvious effort to try to show inclusion on this historic day, but the crowd was almost all white, giving critics an open door. REVEREND AL SHARPTON, CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST: We’re not giving them this day. This is our day, and we ain’t giving it away. And similar to reports on the rally that aired on GMA on Friday and Saturday, ABC used such labels as “controversial” and “conservative” to label Beck or his followers, but did not use ideological labels to refer to Sharpton, nor was the left-wing activist’s own controversial history mentioned.  In the opening teaser, substitute host Ron Claiborne asserted that the rally was “led by controversial conservatives Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.” Below is a complete transcript of Bradley’s report from the Sunday, August 29, Good Morning America on ABC, with critical portions in bold : RON CLAIBORNE, IN OPENING TEASER: And rallying cry: Thousands descend on the Washington Mall for a rally led by controversial conservatives Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin . Is this new conservative movement gaining new momentum? … BIANNA GOLODRYGA: Turning to politics now and the competing rallies in Washington, D.C., on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech Saturday. At one, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. At the other, the Reverend Al Sharpton. Tahman Bradley was there. TAHMAN BRADLEY: Conservatives and Tea Party supporters came to the National Mall in droves, a rally cry from Fox News commentator Glenn Beck.

Today Show Previews Glenn Beck Rally: Watch Out For Signs With ‘Racist Overtones’

NBC’s Tom Costello, on Friday’s Today show, in previewing Glenn Beck’s rally at the Lincoln Memorial this weekend, focused on the racial insensitivity of the Tea Partiers as he reminded NBC’s viewers that at last year’s  rally in Washington “there were a lot of signs that had rather racist overtones. The concern is that might be repeated this time. By the way, many Beck followers, who are coming, are being urged to avoid African-American areas and avoid conflict.” Costello began his story noting that while “Glenn Beck says that Dr. King is a hero of his” he is still “defiant in his right to be here” and then went on to cite political analyst Stu Rothenberg in insisting “this weekend’s event could carry risk for Republicans.” The following is the full Costello story as it was aired on the August 27 Today show: ANN CURRY: Radio and Fox News host Glenn Beck is promising a massive rally in Washington this weekend to, quote, “Restore honor in America.” He plans to do it at the same spot and on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech and that is stirring some controversy. NBC’s Tom Costello is at the Lincoln Memorial this morning with more on this. Tom, good morning. [On screen headline: “‘Restoring Honor’ Glenn Beck’s Rally On MLK Anniversary”] TOM COSTELLO: Ann, good morning to you. And Glenn Beck says that Dr. King is a hero of his, and for that reason he will not stand on the same step that Dr. King stood on in 1963. He plans to stand a few steps below that. That said, he is defiant in his right to be here. What happened on this very spot 47 years ago tomorrow was among the most pivotal moments in American history. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: I have a dream today. COSTELLO: But conservative host Glenn Beck also has a dream. GLENN BECK: We will mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor. COSTELLO: Beck is hoping his rally this weekend will rival last year’s anti-tax rally that attracted tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of people, many of them tea party activists. Increasingly Beck has been evoking the civil rights movement and says this weekend is about restoring honor in America. He also insists he did not realize it was the anniversary of the March on Washington but, he says, that shouldn’t matter. BECK: I’m sorry. African-Americans don’t own Martin Luther King. It’s a human idea just like white people don’t own George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. COSTELLO: But Beck’s comments about race have sometimes been inflammatory. BECK: This president, I think, has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don’t know what it is. SARAH PALIN: Do you love your freedom? COSTELLO: And joining Beck this weekend will be former Governor Sarah Palin, who last week defended talk show host Laura Schlessinger’s repeated use of the “n” word, as freedom of speech, saying it wasn’t being used in a racist manner. DR. LAURA SCHLESSINGER: And I’ll say it again *bleep* *bleep* *bleep* COSTELLO: While Beck insists this is a nonpolitical gathering, analyst Stu Rothenberg says this weekend’s event could carry risk for Republicans. STU ROTHENBERG: The Republican Party needs conservatives, needs the Tea Party activists but the Republican Party does not want to be defined by Tea Partiers or Glenn Beck. COSTELLO: Activist Reverend Al Sharpton, will also be in D.C., Saturday leading a march to mark the MLK anniversary but promises to avoid confrontation. AL SHARPTON: To go and confront him is to make it about him. That would, in my opinion and the opinion of many that are participating with us that day, would mock the memory of Dr. King. COSTELLO: So why this weekend? Beck says maybe it was meant to be. BECK: I believe in divine providence. It was not my intention it to select 8/28 because of the Martin Luther King tie. COSTELLO: Also, Beck says that he believes this is about reclaiming civil rights. Importantly, he says, they will not allow any campaign signs here at all. That may be rather tough to enforce given the scope and the size of this place. The trouble is, of course, last year there were a lot of signs that had rather racist overtones. The concern is that might be repeated this time. By the way, many Beck followers, who are coming, are being urged to avoid African-American areas and avoid conflict. Ann, back to you. CURRY: Okay. We’ll see what happens. Tom Costello, thanks a lot.

What’s On: FNL FTW!

It’s a day of jubilation for Friday Night Lights fans who yelled “Touchdown!” during yesterday’s Emmy nominations. Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton both scored nods, and they hope to ruin Bryan Cranston and Glenn Close’s chances of repeat wins. I’m skeptical, but we should accept this small victory. Also: Wife Swap is new tonight, that may mean I’m excited, and I’m sorry.

Glenn Greenwald Clobbers Eliot Spitzer in Debate on the Gaza Flotilla | | AlterNet

One of the best cable news smackdowns ever recorded. June 3, 2010 | You don’t often get a piece of cable TV this good, so it’s worth transcribing and posting in its entirety. Yesterday, two Netanyahu propagandists appeared on MSNBC prior to Glenn Greenwald, painting a picture of the flotilla raid that was so grossly distorted it was unrecognizable as the incident that is being rightfully condemned around the world. Host Eliot Spitzer vigorously agreed with them, and then brought them back once again to counter Glenn after his appearance. Spitzer was not nearly so conciliatory with Glenn, and during the interview, clips of the selectively edited IDF propaganda videos and their helpful English subtitles played continuously. In a rare and contentious eight minute cable news segment, Glenn decided to set the record straight: ELIOT SPITZER: Now let’s bring in Glenn Greenwald from Salon.com who calls Israel’s actions quote, “heinous and repugnant” and, well let me just ask you, you have ships approaching Gaza, controlled by Hamas; Hamas is a terrorist organization, Israel did (I don’t think this is disputed) offer to have the ships inspected, if there was no contraband on board, let the ships continue on to Gaza. Why was that not a reasonable offer, why should Israel not intercede to stop the flow of contraband? GLENN GREENWALD: Well, first of all, international waters, which is where this ship was, is not owned by Israel. It is a crime, a war crime, to attack a ship in international waters that has not engaged in any aggression, and no one claims that these ships were. I mean, what you’re describing is absolute anarchy, that any country can just say, “no ships can go here, and if you disobey our order, we’re going to attack you, board your ship forcefully, and kill anybody who does resist.” SPITZER: Well, let me interr… GREENWALD: No, let me just finish because you just had on 10 minutes of uninterrupted pro-Israeli propaganda filled with falsehoods. The blockade is one of the most brutal and inhumane blockades that we’ve seen in the last generation. Look at UN reports that are objective, not Netanyahu aides, that say that 60% of the babies in Palestine have anemia, 65% of the population is food insecure; the entire Palestinian economy has collapsed as a result of this blockade. Israel routinely refuses to permit all sorts of imports including food, chocolate, french fries, anything but the barest necessities to keep those prisoners — which is what they are — alive… SPITZER: Glenn, I hear you. Hold on one second. Let’s go back to Ruth Wedgewood, who is really a top-flight intellect and scholar of international law, said that nations that are a war are permitted in international water to enforce a blockade and to check to see if contraband is on board. Now, nobody has said that Israel has prevented humanitarian materials to flow through to Gaza. You may be saying there’s not enough… More at the link: added by: Monkey_Films
