Bella And Katniss: Analyzing Their Literary Appeal

For ‘Twilight’ Tuesday, we chat with experts about why young readers relate to the YA heroines. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate No matter how you feel about “The Twilight Saga” as a film franchise, Stephenie Meyer ‘s vampire romance inspired millions of young readers to pick up a book and read. Anything that gets young people to lose themselves in the written word — whether it’s “Twilight,” “The Hunger Games” or “Game of Thrones” — is a positive step. This week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is all about understanding what it is exactly about the characters in these books, particularly the very popular YA genre, that gets us obsessed and day-dreamy about them. Why do we love Bella and Katniss? What does that say about young readers today and the future of the genre? I took my questions to a few very informed experts. “The thing with the Bella phenomenon, she was kinda like an empty vessel, and I feel like part of the appeal there was just a really blank slate on which people could project their own identities,” said Lauren Oliver, best-selling author of “Delirium” and “Pandemonium.” “It was fantasy. It allowed you to float up through it. “In terms of heroines now, I think what’s really interesting about them is that, many of them, for example ‘The Hunger Games,’ certainly in my books, the characters don’t necessarily start out being so fierce and badass, which I think to some extent would be not even off-putting, but alienating,” she continued. “Because I’m not sure that people feel that way. I do think what’s significant is that these characters are portrayed as being very much at the start, normal girls, but very moral normal girls who because of a set of very extraordinary circumstances are able to step into strength that they didn’t know they possessed. I think that really resonates with people because everybody I assume would like to feel that, if given the chance, they could be someone special.” Dr. Jenn Berman, host and therapist on VH1’s “Couples Therapy” said the love for both types of heroines hearkens back to classic literary characters we’ve loved for centuries. “Both characters are appealing on a very archetypal level. One is very much a damsel in distress, this sort of empty, insecure vessel, which I think is very identifiable for young women,” she explained. “The other is sort of this superhero, strong, independent woman who doesn’t need anybody, which I think is also something that is very inspirational for women. In each one of us we have both of those entities, and as a result, people are drawn to these characters.” Kristin Rens, senior editor at HarperCollins, pointed out that while Bella and Katniss are pretty different, they also share a few qualities to which a lot of teens relate. “Bella and Katniss are obviously very different characters. But one thing they have in common is their drive — the fact that they both very much know what they want, and they won’t stop until they reach their goals,” Rens said. “When you’re a teen, there are so many parts of life that are out of your hands, so there’s something very aspirational and appealing about characters like Bella and Katniss who are able to take control of their own lives, even when the odds are stacked against them.” Dr. Berman added that we all have a little damsel in distress in us, as well as a superhero; the trick is balancing them. “In order to become fully formed people, we have to find a way to both make friends with our damsel in distress and find a way to rescue her on our own,” she said. “As long as you understand why and what you need to do with that archetype, it’s OK, but to romanticize the damsel-in-distress archetype, you set yourself up for unhealthy relationships. What you do [to prevent that] is you say, ‘Wow, there is a part of me that would really like to be rescued, but I’m not going to give into that part of me. I’m going to rescue myself instead.’ ” The same goes for the superhero Katniss archetype, however, in that romanticizing that type of woman can also set you up for an unhealthy perspective. “Healthy relationships aren’t interdependent,” Berman said. “If you are an island, then you’re not having an emotionally intimate relationship, so the truth of a healthy relationship lies somewhere in between both of these archetypes.” How do you relate to Bella? Stalley Relives Savage Journey To Maybach On New Tape

‘I still want so much more, and there’s so much more to get,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of Savage Journey to the American Dream. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Stalley Photo: Getty Images Main Pick Headliners : Stalley Representing : Massillon, Ohio Mixtape : Savage Journey to the American Dream Real Spit : The road to the riches is no doubt a bumpy one, but now that Massillon, Ohio, MC Stalley is riding with the Maybach Music Group, his trip should be a bit smoother — or so you’d think. On March 30, the bearded Maybach spitter dropped Savage Journey to the American Dream. “I named it Savage Journey to the American Dream because that’s just what I’ve been through,” Stalley told Mixtape Daily. “I’ve been searching for that American dream, and I’ve been on a savage hunt for it for the past year.” Stalley first began making a name for himself in 2009 when he dropped MadStalley: The Autobiography, a mixtape he released with Mickey Factz’s GFC camp, on which he rhymed over classic Madlib productions. It was a subtle yet effective shot that would help Stalley make a name for himself in quite a few influential rap circles. After linking with Damon Dash’s DD172 outfit and recording alongside guys like Mos Def and Curren$y, the Ohio native found his lane and released Lincoln Way Nights in 2011. It was his most notable release and helped him get noticed by Rick Ross . “One of my goals was to be a signed artist, and now I’m with MMG and Warner Bros.,” he said. “I thought that things would calm down and I would kinda be satisfied with that, but I still want so much more and there’s so much more to get.” On Savage Journey, Stalley navigates through the pitfalls that await young rappers. “Lane to lane switchin’, keep these lames and dames at distance/ Eight-cylinder pistons, it’s money talkin’, listen/ And it’s tellin’ me go get it, and I’ve been on my way,” he spits on the moody “Route 21.” Curren$y shows up on the car-themed “Hammers & Vogues,” and on “Lover’s Lane,” Stalley makes a pit stop after getting sidetracked by some overzealous females. Stalley gets props, holding down most of the mixtape by himself, but he of course gets help from his MMG family. Rozay and Meek Mill show up for the Block Beattaz-produced “BCGMMG,” and Wale lends a helping hand on “Home to You.” Whether Stalley will ultimately see his dream fulfilled remains to be seen, but with his underground rep already solidified, there’s nowhere to go but up. The tragedy in life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. – Benjamin Mays The first step to achieving success is knowing what you want. So many of us are randomly traveling through life, not living our purpose and not moving towards a real goal. The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, learn about them or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them – Denis Waitley Define your goals, don’t waste time wandering…

Adele: Proud of Her Body!

“I don’t want to be some skinny mini with my tits out. I really don’t want to do it and I don’t want people confusing what it is that I’m about.” So says Adele in an interview with Anderson Cooper on Sunday, one taped prior to this singer landing in the news this week for reasons beyond her incredible ability: first, fashion guru Karl Lagerfeld referred to her as fat . Then, he apologized . The timing for this 60 Minutes piece, therefore, could not be better, as Adele speaks at length about her body image and her goals as an artist; namely to just write “love songs” and nothing more. She isn’t going for shock. She doesn’t care about sex appeal. She just wants to sing. Isn’t that refreshing? Adele 60 Minutes Interview Snippet

State Of The Union Address Inspires ‘Spark’ For Obama

President Obama’s speech has supporters feeling optimistic, young voters tell MTV News. By Kimberly Reynolds, with reporting by Uptin Saiidi President Barack Obama Photo: Bill O’Leary/ Getty Images Young voters across the country tuned in with anticipation Tuesday night to watch President Obama’s State of the Union address . At a New York viewing party sponsored by Gen44 — a Democratic National Committee initiative to politically engage young professionals — MTV News asked voters’ opinions on how the president plans to address the issues facing the country. While the event was filled with mostly Obama supporters, there were still some skeptics. Simone Rakhit supported Obama in the 2008 election — as did 66 percent of voters age 18 to 29 — but started to become disengaged with the president in the three years since he took office and in the upcoming election. “For me, I had lost a little bit of interest, but seeing him tonight, I kind of got that spark back,” Rakhit said. “I kind of got excited again.” Many young voters agreed that the president has a tough road ahead of him in accomplishing the goals he set forth in the State of the Union address, especially in boosting the economy. But they were still optimistic he could get the job done. “I think the president did a great job tonight in addressing all of my concerns, and I think he did it in such a way that he could get a lot of people to rally around him and not just his supporters,” Karsten Vagner said. “I think Americans are led by example. I think if we’re divided as a country, it’s because our government is divided.” Despite the president’s low approval rating and this being an election year, voters we spoke to were glad the president did not hold back in his speech. “I thought it was great that he had Warren Buffett’s secretary out there to serve as a visual example of just how absurd our tax system really is,” Michael Ettanani said. Vagner appreciated Obama’s no-holds-barred approach to the speech: “Tonight was a really good example of seeing people together, and I think it’s because we have a strong leader in the White House.” Shatha Dweik, who is pursuing a master’s degree, was most interested in hearing the president’s plans for job creation for recent graduates as well as his plan to extend the tuition tax credit. “My biggest concern is getting a job, and a good paying job at that,” Dweik shared. After the speech, Dweik said she had “a little bit of confidence in him — a little bit more than I had going into the address.” For her, the message of Tuesday night’s speech was: “There is still hope.” Share your thoughts on the president’s State of the Union address in the comments below.
