‘Twilight’ Trio Have A Long History With MTV Awards Shows

The story continues when Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner present at the 2010 Movie Awards. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart at the 2009 Movie Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Over the course of the past few MTV Movie Awards and Video Music Awards, “Twilight” superstars Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart have become staples. With Thursday’s (May 20) announcement that the big three will continue the trend with an appearance at the 2010 Movie Awards, we take a look back at their MTV awards-show history. Pattinson, Stewart and “Twilight” baddie Cam Gigandet made their first MTV Movie Awards appearance in 2008. They casually made their way down the gold carpet to introduce an exclusive film clip on MTV’s pre-show. That would mark their last low-key appearance. Three months later at the 2008 VMAs, “Twilight” fever had caught on in a big way, and Stewart, Pattinson, Gigandet and Lautner were greeted with plenty of high-pitched screams from fans in the audience. The castmembers introduced “Twilight” soundtrack band Paramore for their big performance. Twilighters were furious with host Russell Brand for allegedly cutting Pattinson off before he finished his line in the introduction. In addition to cleaning up at the 2009 Movie Awards — “Twilight” took home five awards, including Best Movie — Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner took center stage yet again to introduce the first “New Moon” trailer , which Pattinson called “a thank you to the fans.” Stewart glossed over the fact that the trailer boasted not one but two shirtless stars (Pattinson and Lautner) and instead bragged that “New Moon” has “amazing special effects.” Lautner merely assured the audience they’d want to watch the trailer more than once. Last fall, at the 2009 Video Music Awards — amid the Taylor Swift/ Kanye West controversy — Pattinson and Stewart seemed to be seasoned pros. They skipped the red-carpet mayhem, leaving Lautner to work the crowds and the press. They later joined their co-star onstage and marked yet another “Twilight” MTV moment when they presented the extended trailer for “New Moon.” Tune in Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT to this year’s MTV Movie Awards to see what “Twilight” moments will be added to an already storied history. ‘Solitary Man’: Star Time, By Kurt Loder

Michael Douglas goes for the gold. Michael Douglas in “Solitary Man” Ben Kalmen is a man who had it all: pots of money from his high-end auto franchise, a beautiful wife and daughter, a lavish Manhattan apartment, the works. Then, because he’s a complete fool, he started throwing it all away. As “Solitary Man” begins, he seems intent on completing that mission. Kalmen is an off-putting character, an ethically oblivious 60-year-old man who slavers after every woman who wanders within range of his come-ons, the younger the better. The triumph of Michael Douglas’ performance in this role is that he plays Kalmen as exactly what he is — a creep — and yet keeps us with him, wondering if this down-bound hustler can possibly come to his senses before he hits bottom — and whether we should even care. As was the case with Jeff Bridges in last year’s “Crazy Heart,” Douglas reveals himself here as a veteran actor, familiar from dozens of other movies over the last 40 years, who’s still capable of doing his best work; who can still surprise us. The picture opens with a flashback: We see Kalmen being told by a doctor that he has a heart problem, and should return for further tests. That was six years ago, and Ben never went back — physical infirmity doesn’t fit in with his self-image as an all-conquering big-city business stud. He subsequently pulled a financial scam in which a lot of people got hurt, and his reputation never recovered — one day he was on the cover of Forbes magazine, dripping success; the next he was pictured in the New York Times in handcuffs. He spent all of his money on the lawyers who barely kept him out of prison. Now we find Kalmen living in an apartment he can’t afford, hitting up his daughter (Jenna Fischer) for loans, and trying to maintain a breezy facade for the sake of his adoring young grandson (Jake Siciliano), whom he begs not to call him grandpa. He’s also dating a well-to-do divorcee named Jordan (Mary-Louise Parker) and struggling to win the approval of her teenage daughter, Allyson (Imogen Poots), which has so far not been forthcoming. Things aren’t going well for Ben, but they could be worse. Actually, they soon will be. Douglas smoothly conveys the personality flaws of which Kalmen is so blindly unaware. Ben is the kind of aging hotshot who still wears black ties with black shirts and who butts into other people’s conversations in order to talk about himself, and the actor gets this overbearing boorishness just right. The supporting cast is pretty much perfect, too. Fischer is especially moving as a woman torn between love for her father and a growing need to banish him from her life; Poots is astringently effective as a girl who’s wised-up way beyond her years; and Susan Sarandon makes concisely underplayed appearances as Ben’s ex-wife, who’s observing his southward spiral from afar. Most surprising, perhaps, is Danny DeVito, who gives a glowing performance as Kalmen’s only true friend, the owner of a diner near the college Ben attended in his long-gone youth. Hovering above the picture is our awareness of a certain resemblance between Ben Kalmen and the man who plays him. Like Ben, Michael Douglas is a highly successful businessman (among the many movies he’s produced is the 1975 Oscar-winner “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”) with a onetime reputation for hard partying (although he says the alcoholism for which he entered rehab 20 years ago was trumped up as “sex addiction” in the press). It seems likely that his well-known past has informed his portrayal of Kalmen, and there’s an element of bravery in his taking on of such an unsympathetic character. Unlike Jeff Bridges (until recently), Douglas already has one Academy Award as an actor (for the 1987 “Wall Street”). It’s too early to bother speculating about whether he could win another for his performance in this film. But he’s already in the running. Evan Lysacek Talks to Movieline About Dancing with the Stars and Johnny Weir’s Opinions

In 2010, an Olympic gold medal in figure skating qualifies you for two distinctions: 1) undisputed world champion; 2) salsa-dancing wannabe — at least in the eyes of Dancing with the Stars ‘s judging panel. Evan Lysacek may have cleaned up in Vancouver last February against ferocious competitors Johnny Weir and Russia’s hilarious Evgeni Plushenko , but he’s just as vulnerable to America’s vote on DWTS ‘s 10th season. Last week the 24-year-old athlete suffered a slight concussion when preparing to samba with partner Anna Trebunskaya, recovering enough to earn a score of 21, his lowest yet. Just yesterday, he triumphed with a perfect 30 during his Argentine Tango. It appears Lysacek is back in the game. Movieline caught up with the gold medalist last week to discuss Dancing with the Stars , transitioning into acting roles, and Johnny Weir’s pesky snipes.

Spencer Pratt & Emilio Masella: Fist-Pumping For Love

Emilio Masella was recently dumped by Snooki via voicemail. It was sad. Fortunately, the Gold’s Gym trainer is mending his broken heart the best way anyone can – by jumping right back into the dating game, and reality TV universe, with the assistance of The Hills star Spencer Pratt. Spencer’s production company, Douche Pratt Productions, is teaming up with Emilio Masella on a new dating show, Fist Pumping for Love . LOL. It will Jersey Shore star Snooki’s ex as he travels the country “in search of love.” There you have it, the first official Jersey Shore spinoff idea. SEE YA, SNOOK : Emilio seeks a “real” guidette . “It is the perfect partnership for me as a growing player in reality television,” Spencer Pratt said in a statement. Of Emilio Masella, he added: “You haven’t seen nothing yet.” “I am tired of these fake Italian girls,” says Masella, who dated the controversial Jersey Shore star (real name Nicole Polizzi) for four months. “I want a real guid-ette who can speak Italian. We are prepared to search from Hollywood, Calif., to the streets of Howard Beach in Queens, N.Y.” We can’t wait to watch. Filming started Wednesday night in Masella’s local bar and continues this weekend in the Long Island club Glow. Pratt’s wife and The Hills costar, Heidi Montag is also listed as an executive producer of the show. BLING-BLINGIN’ IT : Spencer’s getting a bit desperate these days, no?
