In the weeks leading up to the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais and NBC more or less promised that this year’s show would be a bloody celebrity evisceration, a fitting sequel to last year’s uncomfortable, relatively hard-hitting, and totally riveting installment . The whole show was marketed this way, with promo ads that had Gervais promising he — just like you —would be making fun of all the uptight… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Vulture Discovery Date : 16/01/2012 02:07 Number of articles : 2

She’s So Fly: Bootylicious Bug Named Beyonce Because Of Its Blinging Backside

Turns out that Beyonce is not the only species in nature that’s bootylicious Now there’s a horsefly that bears her name thanks to their shared asset. Beyonce may be one of the biggest pop divas out there, but she isn’t the only diva with that name. A previously unnamed species of horse fly with a glamorous golden rear end has been named Beyonce because it is the “all-time diva of flies,” researchers say. Bryan Lessard, a researcher from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, is responsible for officially describing the fly and naming it Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae, according to the Australian National Insect Collection. Beyonce isn’t the first celebrity to be honored with her own species. Traditionally named after scientists involved in their discovery, organisms have also been linked to the likes of Harrison Ford, Matt Groening (creator of “The Simpsons”), Mick Jagger and other celebrities, including a beetle named after Roy Orbison. The rare Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae species of horse fly was collected in 1981 (the year that Beyonce was born) together with two other previously unknown specimens from northeast Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands. The singer Beyonce, on the other hand, was a member of the group Destiny’s Child, which recorded the 2001 hit single “Bootylicious.” The fly got its booty-ful name from its extreme diva feature: a big gold butt. “It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honor of the performer Beyonce as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy — the naming of species,” Lessard said in a statement. Horse flies like the newly named one play an important role in ecology by pollinating plants. “Horse flies act like hummingbirds during the day, drinking nectar from their favorite varieties of grevillea, tea trees and eucalypts,” Lessard said. The Beyonce fly is one of five detailed in Lessard’s paper, published in the online version of the Australian Journal of Entomology in August and announced on Friday. This discovery has doubled the number of known species within the Scaptia (Plinthina) subgenus and extended the known distribution of Scaptia into the Northern Territory and northwestern Australia, where they were not previously thought to exist. “Most Australian Scaptia species have been described, however, these five ‘new’ species of a subgroup (Plinthina) have been housed in Australian collections since the group was last studied in the 1960s,” Lessard said. Apparently, the singer hasn’t had a chance to respond to the news. The CSIRO blog post reads: “News@CSIRO has sought a response from Beyonce about the great honor bestowed upon her but is yet to receive a response. … Beyonce has recently had her first larva, sorry, child, and may be too busy to respond.” Dang. Everybody is drinking the Kool-Aid these days. Even the scientists. Source More On Bossip! Blake Griffin Dunks Against Warriors (VIDEO)

Prize acquisition Chris Paul scored 20 points and nine assists while Blake Griffin added 22 points and seven rebounds as the L.A. Clippers beat the Golden State Warriors 105-86. Monta Ellis, who was probably happy to be making news for balling instead of texting graphic photos of a Warriors employee, had 15 points and eight assists for G.S. It was not a spectacular opener for CP3 and Blake, but at least they won, unlike the other L.A. team, the Lakers, who were undone by Derrick Rose’s game winner . The Clippers are expected to be a playoff contender for the first time in an eternity, and here’s a big reason why. ‘New Girl,’ ‘Revenge’ Sneak In Golden Globe TV Nods

‘American Horror Story’ is another new show that received surprise nominations. By Jocelyn Vena Zooey Deschanel in “The New Girl” Photo: FOX Sure, “30 Rock,” “Modern Family” and “Glee” all received Golden Globe nominations on Thursday (December 15), but a bunch of brand-new shows also find themselves up for statues at the broadcast. “New Girl,” “American Horror Story” and even America’s newest guilty pleasure, “Revenge,” all nabbed some kind of nod. The Comedy/ Musical Series nomination for Fox’s Zooey Deschanel vehicle “New Girl” is a bit of a surprise. The rookie sitcom follows Actress – Comedy nominee Deschanel as she plays a recently heartbroken schoolteacher who moves in with three single guys. From there, wackiness ensues. A win for Deschanel (who goes up against heavy-hitters like Tina Fey, Laura Linney and Amy Poehler) would bring some fresh blood to the broadcast. While it’s commendable that new shows are getting recognized, it’s surprising that Poehler managed to earn a nomination for her turn as Leslie Knope but that “Parks and Recreation” wasn’t nominated in the Comedy/ Musical Series category. Living on the polar opposite spectrum, FX’s creepy, soapy “American Horror Story” is an unexpected contender in the Drama Series category. The show is a frightening look at relationships and suburbia, where sometimes the decisions made by the living turn out to be more frightening than the things that go bump in the night. Jessica Lange is up for Supporting Actress. Can the show beat out a show like “Boardwalk Empire” or “Game of Thrones”? Probably not, but it’s nice recognition for one of TV’s most compelling new series. If anything, Lange’s portrayal of L.A.’s nosiest neighbor, Constance, deserves some love. Madeleine Stowe probably won’t take home a trophy for her portrayal of the lovably evil Victoria Grayson on “Revenge” in the Best Actress – Television Series Drama category, but her nomination comes as a delightful acknowledgement of that show’s undeniable ability to keep viewers entertained week after week as they tune in to see what happens to the Hamptons’ richest and most powerful. The most predictable nods, perhaps, go to critical favorites and awards-show darlings like “30 Rock,” “Mildred Pierce,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family.” But what does come as a surprise is the fact that “Breaking Bad” was snubbed in the Drama Series category, given the show’s critical praise and fan fervor. Hosted by Ricky Gervais for the third straight time, the Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, January 15, on NBC. After some initial vexation from both director Michel Hazanavicius and star Jean Dujardin about The Artist ‘s wonder dog Uggie factoring in this year’s awards conversation , the duo seems to be warming ever so gradually to the notion that people liking Uggie is good for the movie. “When people say the dog is a good actor, it makes me happy,” Hazanavicius said in his latest interview . “I take it as a compliment for myself and the trainer.” Fair enough! And as for Dujardin? How about prime placement on the Golden Globes’ Web site praising his canine castmate?
