‘Ides Of March’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics argue that script doesn’t match the talent level of the A-list cast in George Clooney’s political drama. By Kevin Sullivan Ryan Gosling in “Ides of March” Photo: Sony Pictures George Clooney returns to the director’s chair for the first time since 2008’s “Leather Heads” in one of the first big releases of Oscar season with “The Ides of March.” But then again, we might just be interested in Ryan Gosling’s third major role this year. Everything about “Ides of March,” from the critically lauded cast and director to the political story line seems to scream for awards season attention, but does it live up to high expectations? Critics can’t seem to agree, but the general consensus is that the script doesn’t meet the talent level of the cast, which is pretty fantastic all around. We’ve rounded up some of the reviews to give you a better idea of what to look for this weekend at the movie theater. The Story “Mr. Gosling’s consultant, Stephen Meyers, would seem to be a true believer. Speaking of his candidate, Gov. Mike Morris (Clooney), he tells a reporter, played by Marisa Tomei, ‘He’s the only one who’s going to make a difference in people’s lives.’ (At that point it’s hard to know if this is true, or if the movie thinks it’s true, since some of Morris’s positions — i.e. that we don’t need Arab oil any more — sound awfully fatuous.) And Steve’s boss, Paul Zara, the campaign manager played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, would seem to be cynicism incarnate. The problem is that the news the story brings may be perfectly accurate, but it isn’t particularly original, and it’s certainly not what we hunger for in these dispiriting, cynical times.” — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal The Direction “Clooney has a keen eye for a good story. With this, his fourth turn as a director, he has chosen wisely. While perhaps not as nuanced as 2005’s ‘Good Night, and Good Luck,’ it’s more assured than 2008’s ‘Leatherheads’ and more accessible than 2002’s ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.’ It grows a little overheated but works particularly well as a morality tale about power and its tendency to corrupt absolutely.” — Cynthia Puig, USA Today The Screenplay “What is surprising, and disappointing, is that the plot borrows, not once but twice, from the hoariest tropes in the book of smug clich

George Clooney’s Directing Inspires Ryan Gosling

‘That was one of the reasons I wanted to work with George,’ Gosling says of watching Clooney direct himself in ‘Ides of March.’ By Kevin Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News The next step on Ryan Gosling’s climb to the top might take him behind the camera. In a recent interview with MTV News, Gosling talked about his aspirations to eventually direct, like his “Ides of March” co-star and director George Clooney. “I’d like to do that,” Gosling said. “That was one of the reasons I wanted to work with George, was to see how that’s done.” Even though Gosling may look up to Clooney as an actor/director, he isn’t ready to wear both hats simultaneously just yet. “I don’t think I could handle it as well as he does. He’s pretty incredible to watch,” Gosling said of Clooney directing himself in “Ides.” “He’s like Keanu Reeves in ‘The Matrix.’ Any problem that comes to him, he’s just dodging those bullets.” “The Ides of March” marks Clooney’s fourth feature film as director and his first time working with Gosling. While Gosling hasn’t directed yet, he does have some experience behind the scenes: He served as executive producer on last year’s critical darling “Blue Valentine.” Gosling recently found a new collaborator in Danish filmmaker and “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn. The duo are reuniting for Refn’s next film, “Only God Forgives,” and have two other films in development, including the much-delayed remake of “Logan’s Run.” Gosling’s work with Refn developing the tone and screenplay for “Drive” was often talked about in the press and could hint at future directing gigs. Ryan Gosling: What’s Next After ‘Drive’?

Actor will reportedly reteam with director Nicolas Winding Refn for several projects including a possible ‘Logan’s Run’ remake. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Gosling Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Ryan Gosling ‘s “Drive” didn’t exactly zip away from the multiplex this weekend with a hefty box-office haul, grossing only $11 million. That’s a respectable sum for a Cannes darling — less high-octane thriller than slow-burning, tension-filled drama — that was always going to have trouble finding a mainstream audience. But we certainly haven’t heard the last of “Drive,” which remains likely to be a player come awards season, with Gosling potentially nabbing actor nods and helmer Nicolas Winding Refn looking to pick up other wins on the heels of his Cannes directing award. Gosling, for his part, will have some serious competition … from himself: The actor’s “Ides of March” is also sure to be in the mix come the fall. Whatever happens, Gosling is going to be busy from now through awards season and far, far beyond. “Ides Of March” Hitting theaters in October after a festival run this month, “Ides” features Gosling as an idealistic press secretary to a charismatic Ohio governor played by George Clooney , who also wrote and directed the project. The talent in front of and behind the camera made for a buzzy debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, but a crowded field that includes the likes of Steven Spielberg, Stephen Daldry, Woody Allen and Tate Taylor (with his sleeper hit “The Help”) leaves an uncertain awards-season path for “Ides.” “The Place Beyond The Pines” Perhaps we’ve just got “Drive” on the mind, but this project sounds strangely similar to Gosling’s latest. He stars as a motorcycle stunt driver who contemplates committing a crime to benefit his loved ones. At least he looks far different: We recently spotted Gosling on set rocking bleached blond hair and a tattoo under one eye. Costarring Rose Byrne, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes, there’s no word yet on a release date or festival debut. “The Gangster Squad” Production on Ruben Fleischer’s (“Zombieland”) third feature kicked off earlier this month with an all-star cast in place, including Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. Set in post-World War II Los Angeles, the story focuses on the city’s battles against the infiltration of the East Coast mob. Gosling plays a member of the LAPD — a suavely dressed one at that, as some early set photos made clear. “Only God Forgives” Gosling and Refn can’t get enough of each other. Luke Evans was initially set to star in this flick about boxing and prostitution in Bangkok, but the actor had to drop out because of his commitment to the two “Hobbit” films. Gosling reportedly stepped in, with shooting expected to begin in November and an eye on a theatrical release in the second half of 2012, according to Variety . “Logan’s Run” No, seriously: Gosling and Refn can’t get enough of each other. They’re planning on a remake of this 1976 sci-fi classic, with Gosling playing the starring role of a guy living in a dystopian world where no one is allowed to live past the age of 30. The project has long been in development, with directors like Bryan Singer coming and going. Fingers crossed that Gosling and Refn can succeed where others have fallen short. Untitled Romantic Comedy You know the drill by now: Gosling and Refn, together again. Possibly. We know precious little about this project, other than Refn wants to direct, Gosling could star and both men want “Drive” costar Albert Brooks to pen the screenplay. Hey, we’ll bite. “It’s a romantic comedy set in New York, which seems like a great place to start,” Refn told the Los Angeles Times . “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” This one is pure rumor at this point, but reports have suggested Warner Bros. is looking to pair director Steven Soderbergh with a young Hollywood star for this long-gestating adaptation of the ’60s-era spy series. Gosling’s name has come up alongside those of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alexander Skarsg

An ‘Embarrassed’ Ryan Gosling Explains How He Came to Stop That NYC Street Fight

“I’m embarrassed,” explains Ryan Gosling of the infamous street fight he stopped in New York that eventually went viral. “I think that guy really was stealing that other guy’s painting, so I should have just kept my nose out of it.” The good Samaritan has clearly put a lot of thought into what went down that day when he sprang into action while casually strolling through the street in a striped tank and capris, satchel in hand. Watch Gosling relive that harrowing day on video after the jump.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes: New Couple Alert!

Based on their respective levels of hotness, this seems about right, doesn’t it? Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are reportedly dating, as the new couple was spotted over the weekend at Disneyland. “They were very playful,” a witness tells Us Weekly , which has published photos of the pair together. “Eva was skipping around like a little girl… She would lean into him and she held his arm the entire time.” Mendes and Gosling have been friends for awhile, but an insider says they’ve grown extra close while shooting The Place Beyond the Pines , adding: “There’s always been this strong chemistry between them…this was just a matter of time!” Eva does know how to pick a man. Aside from looking the way he does, Gosling is an Oscar nominee and real life New York City hero . [Photos: WENN.com]

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony To Reunite Saturday In Cleveland

Krayzie Bone returns for Ohio Homecoming, also featuring Drake. By Rob Markman Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Photo: Valerie Macon/ Getty Images Things haven’t been harmonious with Bone Thugs lately. In April, Krayzie Bone announced that he was leaving Bone Thugs-N-Harmony , but after three short months, Kray, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone and Flesh-n-Bone will reunite onstage at the Ohio Homecoming concert on Saturday. The concert, which will also feature Drake and local Ohio artists such as Stalley and Ray Cash, will double as a celebration of Cleveland’s 215th birthday. “They ain’t seen us, all five, since Flesh came out [of prison in 2008],” Bizzy Bone told MTV News. “We ain’t been able to really put on a showcase for ’em, and this is a beautiful platform. It’s gonna be thousands and thousands and thousands of people there, and it’s Cleveland’s birthday.” Bone Thugs got their start in 1994 with the EP Creepin on ah Come Up and became certified stars with their multiplatinum 1995 single “Tha Crossroads.” Through the years, however, the Cleveland group has experienced its fair share of ups and downs. First, there was Flesh-n-Bone’s incarceration in 2000, then Bizzy left the group during the promotional tour for the quintet’s BTNHResurrection album. To the casual fan, it might seem as if Krayzie’s recent departure is just another chapter in the group’s tumultuous history. Layzie, however, downplayed the drama. “I can kind of understand with recent activity and everything why they would probably think that we wouldn’t come together for something so big like 215 years — Cleveland’s birthday,” he said. “Over the years, we proved ourselves. OK, we break up to make up, but we proved to be a family that comes together throughout anything.” So, will the upcoming show bring Bone Thugs back together for good? Wish Bone wouldn’t say, but did share that he thinks BTNH’s status has been blown out of proportion. “We’re not just band members that were put together: We’re real family,” Wish said. “It’s a shame that sometimes we go through things like anybody else but by us being in the public eye, it gets magnified about a million times. It makes it worse than it really is, but that’s part of the game … No matter what, we’re going to come together for something that’s very important to us.” What do you predict the future holds for Bone Thugs? Ryan Gosling Declares His ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ For Emma Stone

‘She’s everything, all the time,’ Gosling tells MTV News at film’s NYC premiere. By Amy Wilkinson Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Ryan Gosling may have an Oscar nomination to his name, but the leading man didn’t have to strain his acting muscles too much to portray a man enamored of Emma Stone in the upcoming romantic comedy, “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” When we caught up with the 30-year-old at the movie’s New York premiere Tuesday night, he was more than happy to dole out accolades for his co-star. “She’s everything, all the time,” he said. “There’s no one like her. As soon as she signed on for this movie, I knew it was going to be good.” In the film, which hits theaters July 29, Gosling plays lothario Jacob, a love-averse playboy who takes Steve Carell’s Cal under his wing to teach him the ways of a skilled pickup artist. Yet, in the end, Jacob himself unwittingly finds love with Stone’s Hannah — a role Gosling said was perfectly cast. “The whole film depends on my character giving it all up for her,” he said. “When she came in the room, it all made sense. Show me someone that wouldn’t give it all up for Emma Stone, and I’ll show you a liar.” The admiration, however, certainly wasn’t one-sided. Stone, who stars alongside both Gosling and Justin Timberlake (“Friends With Benefits”) this month, had a hard time wrapping her head around her collection of amazing co-stars. “It’s pretty wild, isn’t it?” she said. “It’s not too shabby. Those Mickey Mouse Clubbers, I’m going to take them by storm.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
