Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 Review: What’s Love Got to Do with It?

Many years ago on The Office, a question was posed to Michael Scott: Would you rather be loved or feared? “Easy. Both,” he replied. “I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.” On  Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 , however, it was finally made frustratingly and painfully clear: Daenerys Targaryen is no Michael Scott. In the most telling scene of the penultimate installment, Dany is pissed that Jon Snow spilled his all his heritage tea to his siblings, telling her nephew and lover after burning Varys alive for his betrayal: “This is a victory for [Sansa]. Now she knows what happens when people hear the truth about you. Far more people in Westeros love you than love me. I don’t have love here. I only have fear.” Jon says he loves her. He assures Dany that she is, and always will be, his Queen. “Is that all I am to you? Your queen?” Dany responds, leaning in for an incestuous makeout session that gets rebuffed. “Alright then,” she says. “Let it be fear.” This is when it’s made clear just what will happen to King’s Landing … and also where Game of Thrones decides to destroy Dany’s character once and for all. First of Her Name? The Unburnt? Queen of Meereen? Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men? Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea? Breaker of Chains? Mother of Dragons? Dany can now add Stereotypical and Sexist Portrayer of What the Writers Apparently Think Happens When a Woman Isn’t Love by a Man Exactly How She Wants To Be. Is that all she is to Jon? His Queen? That’s all Dany has wanted to be to anyone since Season 1. The Dany that has been presented to viewers for seven-plus seasons was never about love. She was never driven by this concept or emotion. She was ruthless, she was calculating and she was focused on her self-proclaimed destiny of sitting on the Iron Throne — but she was also about fighting for the innocent. What happened to the woman who freed slaves? Who talked about breaking the wheel? She was replaced on this final season by someone who claimed to Sansa weeks ago that she only chose to fight the White Walkers because she was just so smitten with Jon Snow — and who chose to go completely, totally and utterly off the rails on this episode because she was just so unloved. The abrupt character change has been more brutal to watch than any beheading. As you must know by now if you’re reading this, Team Winterfell successfully defeated the Golden Army and Cersei’s soldiers, largely thanks to Dany finally remembering that her dragon can shoot fire at enemies. The other side had given up. The bell signaling as much had been rung. But Dany needed to make her future peons fear her. She needed to kill thousands of innocents now so that thousands more could grow up without a tyrants rule down the line, according to her own warped logic from earlier in the episode. So The Mad Queen finally embraced this nickname and went all Dracarys on the men, women and children of King’s Landing. It made no sense. It turned an admirably strong and powerful woman into someone so scorned by her boyfriend that she decided to go crazy. Viewers can argue all they want about whether this has been teased since the beginning; since all that talk about Dany’s father, “The Mad King,” and how Targaryen blood is basically tainted with violence and instability. But Dany knew this about her family, vowed to remain above it all and continually followed through, staying rational and in control while doing what she felt necessary to achieve her dream. Then George R.R. Martin failed to finish his last book, the creators were forced to come up with their own ending and have dropped the ball here with not just Daenerys, but with Jamie as well. Talk about an even more abrupt and ridiculous character change! We spent season upon season watching Jamie Lannister evolve. One of the show’s most impressive accomplishments was turning Jamie from a renowned King Slayer and Attempted Child Killer into someone who knighted Brienne, realized the many errors of his evil sister-banging ways and was not dedicated to fighting for what is good and right. Until, that is, Sansa stated the obvious last week about how Cersei would be killed and then Jamie simply chose to be “hateful” again, breaking the heart of Brienne (another character ruined this season) and returning home to try and save Cersi. The siblings ended up dying together when the Red Keep crashed down upon them toward the end of Dany’s attack — but our hope for Jamie’s previously-well-earned redemption died long before that. What a mess. Did Martin explain his planned ending to producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and they were forced to reverse-engineer their own finale as a result? It seems very possible. There’s no way these two writers thought they’d have to come up with their own ending when they started working on the project. We can therefore understand the corner the show was perhaps backed into, but that doesn’t make the actul viewing of an episode such as this any more entertaining or any less frustrating. Dany has been a compassionate and harsh aspiring ruler; those two adjectives do not need to be in conflict with each other. Jamie has been a flawed, but developing and remorseful soldier; he had come the farthest of anyone on the show. And then, over the course of 80 minutes, the writers set fire to all that had been accomplished between these two fan favorites, setting up a finale that feels predictable ( Jon is clearly going to kill Dany , right?), anticlimactic and, worst, of all, unearned. Little People, Big World: Just How Fake Is It?!?

Little People, Big World is a reality television show. This is not exactly a groundbreaking statement. As such, however, the long-running TLC series has faced the same criticism and the same questions that have faced all other reality television entries on the small screen. Which is to say that many viewers are often wondering the following: Is the series scripted? This speculation was spurred on about three years ago when Jacob Roloff quit the show , resigning with a controversial Instagram post that he claimed at the time called out the program for exactly what it is: An example of total phoney baloney, according to Jacob. “Producers have to try to get us to follow the talking points,” he shared in this message, jumping way high on a pedestal and adding: “For me, noticing how the agenda of the crew doesn’t work well with the health & happiness of our family is what made me decide quite a while ago that I could not be a part of it as soon as I was able.” In this same post, Jacob referred to “storyline” and wrote of his loved ones: “They are the Roloff Characters and I have scarcely anything in common with them.” Years later, Jacob would sort of apologize for these remarks; or at least explain that he had since grown up and regretted making them. He’s now on great terms with these same loved ones, but the issue remains. The question hangs over the Roloffs. How much of what we see each week is natural and normal? And how much is produced or even flat-out written for Amy, Matt and their kids? “For the most part, we keep it real,” Amy Roloff told Us Weekly in a recent interview. “My kids are real. They’re grounded … Granted, here we’re filming three hours and then take the one moment that people will say, ‘Oh, it’s scripted.’ “I say, ‘No, it didn’t feel like the three hours that I was in.’ I like to think that we’re pretty honest, we’re pretty real – at least I am – sometimes to a fault.” In other words: The show is edited. And these edits may be done in such a way to emphasize a certain topic or disagreement in order to boost interest — such as Matt and Amy’s fight a couple weeks ago over the farm . But nothing you see is fake by any definition of that word. How has a show that started off as an idea for a one-off documentary lasted this long? How has it actually set a Guiness World Record ? In this same Us Weekly chat , Matt Roloff chalks it up to what he calls “Compromise TV.” He expounded on this theory as follows: “Compromise TV to me, that definition in my mind, basically means male, female, there’s something for everybody – any age groups, grandpas, grandmas, young kids. “Everybody has got something. “Whether it’s the relationship between Amy and I, or the babies, or the marriages, or the bulldozers and Track Hoes, we’ve got the big farm that has the beautiful backdrop.” View Slideshow: Audrey and Jeremy Roloff: Why They REALLY Quit Little People, Big World

James Charles Gets CANCELED by Tati Westbrook: BYE, SISTER!

By mid-afternoon on Friday, James Charles and Tati Westbrook were dominating social media conversation and trending hard. It's sometimes difficult to tell what exactly is happening with all of that chatter, and nobody has time to string it all together. But we made time, and here's why the internet is cheering after beauty vlogger Tati effectively canceled James. Even if you don't follow many YouTubers or keep up with many beauty vloggers, you've probably heard of James Charles. Why? Well, at only 17, he became the first ever spokesmodel for CoverGirl. Now, he's 19 (he turns 20 later this month) and continues to be a successful influencer. But on Friday, just two weeks before he exits his teens, he began hemorrhaging followers across all platforms. Why? A callout video from friend and fellow beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook, titled: “BYE, SISTER.” We have a clip — the most serious excerpt — from the 40-minute video that Tati released on Friday afternoon. But you should know that this all started when James Charles endorsed a company that sells hair vitamins. See, his until-now good friend Tati has her own brand of Halo Beauty gummies. James was apparently assisted by another brand's security while at Coachella this year, and repayed them by endorsing the brand. Tati was livid — especially when, after nine days, he still hadn't reached out to her. “To not even get a phone call, to not even get a text a few days prior… that's pretty typical of James Charles' behavior,” Tati says. “From the time that I met him when he was 17,” she notes. “I know that he has a way of just getting what he wants.” “And,” Tati explains. “I always blamed it on his age.” But she says that James has changed more since they first met than she had ever imagined. He is no longer a person with whom she wants to be associated. “Fame, power, and a fat bank account will change almost anyone,” Tati expresses. Since his meteoric rise to fame, James has rubbed elbows with top-tier celebrities and also Katy Perry. “And if you don't have people that tell you to your face that you're doing the wrong things,” she notes. “You will change.” “I tried to be that person to you James, I really tried,” Tati laments. “I don't think there is any getting through to you and I don't want to be friends with you,” she declares. “I don't want to be associated with you,” Tati repeats. “And I need to say that very publicly so that this chapter can just be closed.” Tati says that she was instrumental in encouraging him early in his career. She also accuses him of spreading malicious rumors that treat her like a villain. But things get more serious when she begins to accuse James of being almost a predator. “You tried to trick a straight man into thinking he's gay yet again,” Tati alleges in her video. “Using your pain, your power, your money to play with people's emotions,” she accuses. “You're threatening to ruin them.” What she's talking about here is an Instagram model, pictured here, named Gage Gomez. Gage was linked with James Charles earlier this year, and even spotted alongside him at Coachella. (A great reminder that nothing good comes from Coachella) James accused Gage of “using him” for social media clout, and Gage was harassed by James' (young, impressionable) fans. But Gage tells a very different story. Gage says that he admitted to James that he was unsure of his sexuality, but says that James then began pressuring him. This wasn't just sexual pressure — he says that James would insist that he make time for him, and then viciously subtweet him if he was busy. He says that James would block and unblock him on Instagram and also invite and uninvite him to Coachella. That sounds like toxic and even manipulative behavior. James Charles has also been accused of being racist and transphobic, both in the past and very recently. We can't say that we're sorry to see him canceled — and especially not in such a thorough way. Remind us to never get on Tati's bad side.

Wendy Williams to Mistresses Everywhere: Prepare to Rot in Hell!

Wendy Williams may be done with her cheating husband. But she isn’t done with the concept of cheaters in general, as the talk show host made clear this morning on the latest episode of her daytime program. One month after Williams finally filed to divorce Kevin Hunter , who has admitted to stepping out his wife multiple times with different women, Wendy said the following on air Friday: “There are a lot of women with no respect for a marriage. “You know what I’m saying? A lot of women who know your man is married and will have the nerve to be right up under him, right under your nose.” Williams went off on this rant in response to Ayesha Curry‘s frustrations over females who have tried to cross boundaries with her husband Steph Curry – even while Ayesha is standing right next to the basketball legend. Wendy promptly shared a snippet from Ayesha’s interview with Jada Pinkett Smith on Red Table Talk, where she recounted an incident in which a fan “crossed the line with her,” explaining in more detail: “We wanted to buy bikes one day … [daughter] Riley, at the time, she’s less than a year old. And this group of people come over, they’re trying to ask Steph for pictures and autographs. “The woman opens the car door, sticks her body in the car and is just like, ‘Oh, let me see.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, get out of the car.’ “And she goes, ‘Oh, honey, you know what you signed up for.’” Williams immediately shared her opinion on such groupies. “For you lonely girls who can’t keep their hands off other people’s men, there’s a hot place in hell for you,” the host said sharply She’s not really talking about Ayesha and Steph Curry here, though, of course. She’s talking about Hunter and Sharina Hudson, the mistress with whom her estranged husband has been sleeping for years . Rumors have circulated for a very long time about this affair, but they took on a disturbing life of their own after Hudson actually gave birth to Hunter’s baby this spring . Williams, a former hard drug user, responded to this development by falling off the wagon, getting drunk and getting rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, she eventually collected herself and kicked Hunter to the curb. At last. “The split is definitely due to Kevin’s ongoing infidelity and that his mistress recently welcomed their child,” a source told People Magazine. “Wendy had hired a private investigator and confronted him. He confessed to everything three weeks ago.” He confessed to nearly everything in public, too. “28 years ago I met an amazing woman: Wendy Williams. At the time, I didn’t realize that she would not only become my wife, but would also change the face of entertainment and the world,” said Hunter in mid-April , perhaps laying it on a bit too thick. He continued: “I have dedicated most of our lives to the business empire that is Wendy Williams Hunter, a person that I truly love and respect unconditionally.” And he concluded: I am not proud of my recent actions and take full accountability and apologize to my wife, my family and her amazing fans. I am going through a time of self-reflection and am trying to right some wrongs. No matter what the outcome is or what the future holds, we are still The Hunter Family and I will continue to work with and fully support my wife in this business and through any and all obstacles she may face living her new life of sobriety, while I also work on mine I ask that you please give me and my family privacy as we heal. Thank you. Williams has fully come to her senses, sources confirm. She has fired Hunter as a producer on her talk show and she vows not to give him a dime in the divorce settlement. We’ve never said this before, but it’s warranted now: You go, Wendy Williams! Stay strong! View Slideshow: Kevin Hunter: Who is Wendy Williams’ Awful Husband?

Larissa Lima: Did She REALLY Flush Her Ring?

90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? has returned with Season 4. Once again, Larissa Lima is back on our televisions, where her conflicts with Colt Johnson rage on. In hindsight, their squabbles from that time seem so small, relatively, compared to their marriage's catastrophic conclusion. But one fight had a dramatic, permanent impact on their relationship: when Larissa allegedly flushed her ring down the toilet. We know that she was mad at Colt (who isn't?). But did she really flush her ring, or was that a claim to hurt Colt or shock viewers? Larissa is opening up about what really happened and sharing further details about the ring. 1. Did Larissa really flush her ring? Reality television can include an unbelievable amount of drama, but some can’t help wondering if Larissa merely flushed an empty toilet to upset Colt, or if the entire storyline was concocted by producers for an extra dose of drama. 2. This season, their messy marriage is all out in the open We saw their conflicts on 90 Day Fiance when they were merely engaged. Then, we saw their meltdowns and their scandals on Instagram. 3. We never needed to know this much about their sex life It’s clearly not good, though it of course does not justify Colt’s cheating scandal from December. 4. The entire family has been in turmoil The dysfunctional relationship between Debbie and Colt was widely apparent to all viewers and to Larissa — but not to the mother and son themselves. 5. But things took a scary turn At one point, Larissa asked to be interviewed in the car to explain to producers that she had real fears about her safety. 6. Larissa had reached out to others Her friend Carmen took to social media after the clip aired to explain that Larissa had been in contact with her that same day to express her concerns about reprisals from Colt and Debbie. Kim Kardashian & Kanye West Welcome Fourth Child: He’s Here and He’s Perfect!

Well, it looks like there’s officially one more Kardashian in the world! Kim Kardashian announced on Twitter moments ago that she and husband Kanye West have welcomed their fourth child! “He’s here and he’s perfect!” Kim tweeted. “He’s also Chicago’s twin lol I’m sure he will change a lot but now he looks just like her,” the reality star added. Back in January, Kim and Kanye announced that they were expecting a fourth child via surrogate . Their newest addition joins the couple’s previous three children — North, 5, Saint, 3, and Chicago, 1. Fans are anticipating another non-traditional name, but it looks as though they may have to wait a little longer. Neither Kim nor Kanye has offered any hints with regard to their new baby boy’s moniker, and it wouldn’t be unlike the couple to keep that secret for a week or more. We first learned about the forthcoming bundle of joy during Kim’s famously revealing interview with Andy Cohen back in January. At the time, Kim stated that the child was due “sometime soon.” She also revealed that she and Kanye were expecting a boy, a fact she apparently already divulged while partying during the holidays. “It’s a boy, I think it’s been out there,” Kim told Cohen. “I got drunk at our Christmas Eve party and told some people. I can’t remember who I told because I never get drunk.” Indeed, most of our information about Kim and Kanye’s fourth child has come from talk shows. Kim Kardashian’s Surrogate Is in Labor!!! During an appearance on Ellen yesterday, Kourtney Kardashian revealed that Kim’s surrogate was in labor . The news came as a shock to both Ellen and Kris Jenner, who immediately felt the need to rush to the hospital. It’s unclear if Kourt and Kris made it in time for the delivery, but the important thing is that it seems Kim and Kanye have welcomed a healthy baby boy following a smooth delivery. And it seems that becoming a family of four with two boys and two girls was always part of the plan. “Kim has always wanted four kids. She talks about it all the time,” an insider tells People magazine. “She likely won’t have any more after this.” “They definitely want a boy,” a second source revealed, adding: “That’s always been the plan … four kids: two boys and two girls.” Our sincerest congrats go out to one of the world’s most iconic couples. Now you two can go ahead and reveal that bonkers name anytime! View Slideshow: Kardashians Talk Tristan, Kris (Humphries!), Kanye and More!

Cardi B Praises Britney Spears After Mental Health Break: I Love You!

Even though Britney Spears checked out of her mental health facility and is back at home, fans still have questions about her troubles. Cardi B doesn't have questions, though — she has a powerful message of support in a recent interview. Like the rest of us, Cardi is a Britney stan first and a person second. Shortly after Britney Spears checked out of the mental healthcare facility, she was shown on video working out to Cardi's music. “It's so dope!” Cardi exclaims in an interview with Entertainment Tonight . She explains that she felt so honored “because I'm a very big Britney Spears fan.” Cardi also shares an anecdote about using the lyrics to “Piece of Me” to boost her confidence because “b–ches used to hate on me in high school.” Through Britney, all things are possible. She's a comfort to many. Cardi would also love to “one day” collaborate with Britney on a song. The world would also greatly enjoy that, just, you know, for the record. Cardi is then asked if she has a message that she would like to give to Britney at this difficult time. “I love you!” Cardi begins. “And,” she adds. “I totally understand.” “Fame,” Cardi asserts. “Will drive you insane.” Britney checked into the facility to deal with her mental health after her father's ongoing health crisis. “Not only will fame drive you insane,” Cardi notes. “But it’s like, once you have money … everybody wants to take it from you” She then laments the way that people in her circle will try to get her hard-earned money from her. Britney recently increased her monthly child support payments to baby daddy Kevin Federline by a tremendous amount. But there's more to it than fame and merely needing to pay, Cardi admits. “Sometimes,” she recalls. “Like, if you just have your own personal problems, when you’re a celebrity, everybody want to sue you.” “Everybody want a piece of the money that you worked for,” Cardi laments. “It’s very frustrating,” she expresses. And she notes that it's only part of the equation. “And then you have like the whole world looking at you and no privacy,” Cardi observes. She opines: “It’s crazy.” Cardi's next line could be interpreted as “shady,” but we know that she means it in an honest and flattering way. “I can’t imagine if you do it for such a long time like her,” Cardi marvels. Britney is a true champion. This is such a good interview, and it really shows Cardi playing to her strengths. She is an honest person who will speak her mind, whether she's slamming somebody or gushing about being a fan. There's a lot that we don't know about Britney's situation, but everything that Cardi said is true and could be contributing factors. The core of Cardi's words — that she loves and supports Britney — remain true. Even if her reminder that she was still a young teenager when “Piece of Me” came out … makes some of us feel centuries old.

Daenerys Targaryen: Is the Khaleesi the Real Villain of Game of Thrones?!

Well, we’re just over one week away from the series finale of Game of Thrones . The bad news, of course, is that in a few short days, we’ll never again have another new episode of GoT to dissect, obsess over, and argue about. The good news is that after eight seasons of twists, turns, betrayals, and bloodshed, we’ll finally get to find out who wins the battle for the Iron Throne. From the very start, it was widely assumed that a fan favorite would emerge victorious in the end. Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen were considered the frontrunners, of course, but if we were to bear witness to an unexpected chain of events that put Arya Stark or even Tyrion Lannister in the seat of power, that ending would likely be embraced by viewers, as well. Fortunately, George R.R. Martin and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have never given a damn about what the fans want. And to quote Theon Greyjoy’s sadistic tormentor Ramsay Bolton, “if you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.” Over the course of the past several episodes, we’ve seen Daenerys slowly stripped of just about everything meaningful in her life. She lost another one of her dragons, as well as her best friend and confidant, Missandei, who was brutally executed right before her eyes. On top of that, she’s now burdened with the knowledge that her lover and biggest supporter has revealed himself to be her nephew and the rightful heir to the throne she so covets. Obviously, all of this has taken a tremendous toll on the Khaleesi, the Breaker of Chains, and the Bearer of About 17 Other Official Titles. The change in her mindset has been so extreme that it’s begun to manifest itself physically. In ” The Last of the Starks ,” Dany sneers and spits venomous responses to those who challenge her, often while wearing more red — the official color of House Targaryen and its “Mad King” Aerys — then we’ve ever seen her in before. Her slow transformation from virtuous egalitarian to power-hungry despot-in-the-making has been masterfully portrayed by Emilia Clarke. And now many fans are wondering where it’s all headed. Nothing about the show up to this point has pointed to a conclusion in which the good guys win and justice prevails. Still, having been conditioned by decades of TV show storylines that played out along more crowd-pleasing arcs, we find ourselves expecting exactly that. But what if, as Dany prepares to lead her troops into “the Last War” against Cersei Lannister and her assembled forces, she’s not the one we should be rooting for? That’s not to say that Cersei has been a low-key hero all the while — it’s possible that there’s no one we should be rooting for, or that a third party will emerge as the GoT’s rightful protagonist. But whatever the case, it seems increasingly clear that Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen is not the ruler that the long-suffering people of Westeros deserve. Clarke stated this week that Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 is her favorite of the entire series. (As with every episode this season, its title won’t be revealed until the moment it premieres.) That could mean we’re in store for another epic military campaign on par with the Battle of Winterfell .
