Obama Bans Military Vehicles From Local Police Departments Our President is pulling the rug out from under the cops who think they are soldiers… Via HuffingtonPost In an unexpected move, President Barack Obama on Monday will ban the federal government from providing certain military equipment to police departments. Effective immediately, the government will no longer provide local law enforcement with armored vehicles, grenade launchers and bayonets. Other items like explosives and riot equipment will be transferred to police only if they provide additional certification and assurances that the gear will be used responsibly. The changes stem from recommendations made to the president in a new report produced by a White House working group. Obama created the task force earlier this year via executive order. The president’s action is part of a broader effort to relieve tensions between law enforcement and minority communities after the deaths of several black men at the hands of police in Ferguson, Missouri; Baltimore; and other cities. In Ferguson, for example, local police rolled out armored tanks and riot gear in response to protests over the 2014 death of Michael Brown, a reaction that many saw as making the situation dramatically worse. “The idea is to make sure that we strike a balance in providing the equipment, which is appropriate and useful and important for local law enforcement agencies to keep the community safe, while at the same time putting standards in place so that there’s a clear reason for the transfer of that equipment, that there’s clear training and safety procedures in place,” White House Director of Domestic Policy Cecilia Muñoz said in a Sunday call with reporters. Of course, POTUS can’t take away all of the cops’ toys with out giving them a lil’ somethin’-somethin’ in return… News of the ban on military weapons comes ahead of Obama’s Monday visit to Camden, New Jersey, where he will highlight the success of the city’s police department in building trust with its community. The president will visit police headquarters and meet with officers before giving public remarks. He will also announce $163 million in grants to encourage police departments to adopt the recommendations of the White House working group report. When he shared the story during his January 30 broadcast, however, several soldiers who were on the scene that day cried foul, forcing Williams to apologize and admit that he had “misremembered” the events in question. Brian Williams Apologizes Now, more stories of Williams heroism in the line of duty are being questioned, and the future of the revered journalists’ career is suddenly in doubt. Critics of Williams are now questioning his claims that he contracted dysentery and watched dead bodies float past his hotel while covering Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The New York Post claims Williams stayed in an area of the city that was not affected by flooding and that doctors tell them not a single case of dysentery was reported during Katrina. The Post also claims that former Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw is calling for Williams’ head, reportedly telling sources that he is “extremely uncomfortable” with Williams lies and that “a lesser producer or journalist would have been immediately fired for a false report.” This is not the first scandal that’s threatened the integrity of NBC News in recent months. Bail Bondsman To The Stars Ira Judelson Says He Hopes To Spring Shmurda From Rikers Island By Next Week Bobby Shmurda may be finally getting off of Rikers Island. The “Hot Ni**a” rapper, currently locked up on felony conspiracy and other charges, has secured celebrity bail bondsman Ira Judelson, who said he’ll put up Shmurda’s $2 million bail as early as next week. “At the end of the day, I’m their bank. I’m the one who is going to be putting up the money to secure their appearance in court,” Judelson told Bossip after attending a hearing for Shmurda and his GS9 co-defendants at Manhattan Supreme Court Thursday. “Bobby is relying on me to put up the $2 million to get him out the door, get him back to his family and get his music career back on track.” Known as the bail bondsman to the stars, Judelson has previously bonded out Plaxico Burress, Ja Rule, Lawrence Taylor and Dominique Strauss Kahn. Judelson said he’s also bailing out Shmurda’s brother, Jahvase and co-defendants, Remy and Chad Marshall. “We’re hopefully going to post bail for this young man, and move forward, and litigate this case,” Shmurda’s new lawyer, Kenneth Montgomery, told Bossip. Shmurda – real name Ackquille Pollard – is fighting drug, weapons and conspiracy charges and has been in protective custody on Rikers Island for the last five weeks. On Thursday, Shmurda and a slew of co-defendants were arraigned on a new indictment, and lawyers for the accused hashed out a court schedule. An expressionless Shmurda, clad in a grey sweatshirt, hoarsely said “Not Guilty” during his brief hearing Thursday, which capped the day’s proceedings. As officers led a handcuffed Shmurda back to the cells, his mother, Leslie mouthed “I Love You,” to him. During Shmurda’s hearing, Montgomery tried unsuccessfully to lower his client’s bail, arguing that the government’s evidence doesn’t nail Shmurda as the gang leader, drug dealer and enforcer he is accused of being. “There’s nothing in this case where they’re discussing weight,” Montgomery told Judge James Burke. “There’s nothing as to the hierarchy of this alleged gang. “Based on that, all they have is guns on Mr. Pollard.” But Judge Burke kept his bail at $2 million. Howard Greenberg will still represent Jahvase Pollard, Shmurda’s brother and codefendant. Greenberg’s colleague, Jason Eldridge, was in court to represent Shmurda’s brother. “We’re looking forward to a vigorous defense,” Eldridge said. Shmurda is due back in court in April.
