SMH!!! Tanzania Evicts 40,000 Citizens To Clear Room For Dubai Royal Family Private Reserve This is an absolute shame. Via SALON : 40,000 Masai people will be evicted from their homeland in Tanzania, because the Dubai royal family has bought it with the intention of using it as a reserve to hunt big game. Last year, the Tanzanian government had resisted the purchase, proposing instead a “wildlife corridor” dedicated to hunting near the Serengeti national park. However, the deal will still reportedly go through, and the Masai will have to leave by the end of the year. The deal was brokered by the Ortelo Business Corporation (OBC), a luxury safari company with a number of elite clients. The Guardian’s Africa correspondent David Smith has the story: Masai representatives will meet the prime minister, Mizengo Pinda, in Dodoma on Tuesday to express their anger. They insist the sale of the land would rob them of their heritage and directly or indirectly affect the livelihoods of 80,000 people. The area is crucial for grazing livestock on which the nomadic Masai depend. Unlike last year, the government is offering compensation of 1 billion shillings (£369,350), not to be paid directly but to be channelled into socio-economic development projects. The Masai have dismissed the offer. Samwel Nangiria, the coordinator for the local Ngonett civil society group told Smith that he never thought the government had considered canceling the deal, rather, they just wanted to fool the international press into believing they might. “I feel betrayed,” he said. “One billion is very little and you cannot compare that with land. It’s inherited. Their mothers and grandmothers are buried in that land. There’s nothing you can compare with it.” Nangiria also said that those who opposed the hunting ground were in danger– many were killed by police and Nangiria had received personal threats. Very interesting… Iranian Government Pushes Homosexuals To Gender Reassignment Iran reports having “no homosexuals” in their society , but that seems to be due to the fact that they are either forced out due to harsh discrimination, or coaxed into living their lives as the opposite gender in order to conform to male/female relationship norms. The results are unsurprisingly damaging in the long-run for gay citizens who have no real desire to become transgendered. Via BBCnews : It’s not official government policy to force gay men or women to undergo gender reassignment but the pressure can be intense. In the 1980’s the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa allowing gender reassignment surgery – apparently after being moved by a meeting with a woman who said she was trapped in a man’s body. Shabnam – not her real name – who is a psychologist at a state-run clinic in Iran says some gay people now end up being pushed towards surgery. Doctors are told to tell gay men and women that they are “sick” and need treatment, she says. They usually refer them to clerics who tell them to strengthen their faith by saying their daily prayers properly. But medical treatments are also offered. And because the authorities “do not know the difference between identity and sexuality”, as Shabnam puts it, doctors tell the patients they need to undergo gender reassignment. In many countries this procedure involves psychotherapy, hormone treatment and sometimes major life-changing operations – a complex process that takes many years. That’s not always the case in Iran. “They show how easy it can be,” Shabnam says. “They promise to give you legal documents and, even before the surgery, permission to walk in the street wearing whatever you like. They promise to give you a loan to pay for the surgery.” Supporters of the government’s policy argue that transgender Iranians are given help to lead fulfilling lives, and have more freedom than in many other countries. But the concern is that gender reassignment surgery is being offered to people who are not transgender, but homosexual, and may lack the information to know the difference. This is pretty invasive stuff…same sex attraction doesn’t make you a transgender. The man, whose T-shirt is drenched in his own drying blood, was executed after he was accused of helping government forces in a country torn in two by a brutal civil war. Pinned to his chest is a sign bearing a cryptic message that reads: ‘Cleanliness is a civilised matter that shows your ethics and love for your country.’ Behind the killing is the hardline Islamic group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), a faction so extreme that it has been disavowed by Al Qaeda. Finally!!!! Boko Haram Preparing To Release Half Of The Kidnapped School Girls Via Telegraph UK reports: Boko Haram has dropped demands for the release of top commanders in talks with the Nigerian government and is prepared to start releasing up to half its kidnapped schoolgirls in coming days, sources close to the group have said. The militant Islamist group, which kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls a month ago, is willing to conduct a “gradual” release of its hostages in return for the release of Boko Haram prisoners in Nigerian jails, it was claimed. In a significant concession, the group has abandoned demands for its top commanders to be released, seemingly aware that this would be politically impossible for the Nigerian government. The Telegraph first reported details of Boko Haram’s offer of an imminent prisoner exchange last Tuesday, when sources close to to some of the militants’ families said that a senior Islamic cleric from northern Nigeria would be appointed to mediate on its behalf with the government. The cleric has since been joined by a former aide to one of the group’s founders. Neither man has been named, possibly for their own safety. While the Nigerian government has insisted that it is not willing to enter prisoner swap negotiations, the source claimed that dialogue had already been going in secret for several days. “Contrary to the public rejection of any swap deal by the Nigerian government, there are some on-the-ground talks taking place,” the source said. “An agreement was reached about two or three days ago in principle to start releasing some prisoners.” He said that among the prisoners that the group wanted released would be wives and families of Boko Haram fighters, some of whom have been taken into custody by the Nigerian government in order to exert emotional pressure on the fighters themselves. “The group also has a list of lower-level fighters that it wants released as well, but they are not high-profile ones,” the source added. He said that in exchange, Boko Haram was willing to start a “gradual” release of around 100 of the girls – possibly beginning as early as the coming the week. “Depending on how the other side responds, the girls will be released in small groups. They will be left at a certain safe location, and the authorities will then be told as to where they can pick them up from.” The mass abduction and the military’s failure to rescue the girls and young women has roused national outrage with protests in major cities. Protesters accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being insensitive to the girl’s plight. What the hell is going on in Nigeria? The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Apollo Nida pleaded guilty to charges of mail, wire and bank fraud in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He could be going to jail for a long, long time. Apollo Nida’s crimes could land him in prison for up to 30 years and a fine of up to $1 million on top of restitution for an estimated $2.3 million he allegedly defrauded. His co-conspirator Gayla St. Julien, who said Nida ran the show and helped turn him in after she was arrested, has received a sentence of 61 months last month. Nida will be sentenced on July 8 at 2 p.m. The assistant U.S. attorney said Apollo opened a fake debt collection agency to gain access to databases full of individuals’ personal information. He would then steal people’s ID and find unclaimed funds , refunds from HUD, stolen treasury checks and refunds from fraudulent U.S. income tax returns. Nida had St. Julien open UPS mailboxes and bank checking accounts using those fake identities, deposit those checks, then pocket the money. So why would he do it when he’s already well taken care of by wife Phaedra Parks? Partly for that reason, he said in court. The pressure to keep up was intense! Nida said he takes “full responsibility for my actions” and expressed regret for hurting his family and any individuals and institutions affected by his fraud. Apollo Nida Pleads Guilty In ID Theft Scheme “It was a dumb situation I put myself in,” he said. In 2009, Nida had just left prison after five years for racketeering charges related to auto title fraud. He and Phaedra Parks , a prominent attorney, married. He said she was making far more than him and he felt pressure to keep up. Without easy legitimate ways to make quick money, he opted for this scheme. He said he even had a nervous breakdown at one point over the pressures to “sustain a lifestyle … I got sucked in and engulfed and lost sight of things,” he said. But he claimed to her he was running a legitimate debt recovery firm and kept her firmly in the dark. And once he started the scheme, he found it difficult to stop. Nida said he often didn’t think about whether this was hurting anybody because he was primarily targeting businesses and the government, not individuals. “It’s my fault at the end of the day,” he said. Since Nida is not expected to go to prison until July, when you watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta next season, this will definitely play out on Bravo.
