Australia Plans To Implement Plain-Packaging Rule For Cigarettes

Australia has planned for new rules forcing tobacco companies to use plain packaging carrying graphic health warnings. Starting in July 2012, manufacturers would be required to drop all color and branding logos from cigarette packs. The move which is billed as world-first comes after the recommendations were made by the World Health Organization (WHO). Australia also announced an increase of 25percent in tax on cigarettes that would be effective from 0001 on Friday. The move will put A$2.16 ($1.99, £1.31) on a pack of 30 cigarettes. The law will require all tobacco products to be sold in a standard style and will also carry government health warnings. According statistics, 15,000 Australians died every year because of smoking. Smoking is the largest preventable cause of disease and death in the country. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will hold elections this year and he aims to trim down smoking-related deaths to under 10percent by 2018. He added this will be the most hard-line regime for cigarette packaging anywhere in the world. A spokeswoman for Imperial Tobacco Australia released a statement that the company planned to fight the measure given by the government. Introducing plain packaging will take away the ability of the consumer to identify the brand from another brand. Cigarette companies value their logos a lot for it identifies their brand. The tax hike comes a day after the New Zealand government announced it would raise cigarette taxes by 30% over three years. Thai Prime Minister Speaks Tension Towards Protesters

The Prime Minister of Thailand didn’t expect the strong violence of the protesters who used weapons towards authority. On the national television, Prime Minister Abhisit Bejjajiva made an admission a day after he rejected the call from an anti-government protesters who hopes to dissolve the country’s parliament in 30 days. Abhisit mentioned that the political opinions should be taken into consideration before any action is taken. With an estimated two dozen civilians and military personnel died since the protesters began occupying key tourism spot and shopping areas in Thailand’s capital. The demand from Thai’s anti-government protesters, known as the “Red Shirts,” was one of the strongest list issued since the group began to storm in parliament early April and that the PM declared it as a state of emergency. Red Shirt leaders offered Friday to return the negotiating table only if the government will meet their demands which includes the lifting of a state of emergency and accepting responsibilty for the deaths of protesters earlier this month. Hey, Tea Bagger! Government Can’t Do Anything Right, Eh? Well, Read This

This was written by an anonymous someone at Something Awful and was reproduced a few months ago on Reddit. Here’s the whole wonderful thing: This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US Department of Agriculture-inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. At the appropriate time as regulated by the US Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issed by the Federal Reserve Bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school. After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to ny house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it’s valuables thanks to the local police department. I then log on to the Internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on freerepublic.com and Fox News forums about how “SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD” because “the government can’t do anything right.” Yes, Virginia. Libertarian = Tea Bagger = Dumb Ass.

Feds Indict Former Blackwater President, 4 Others

The former president of Blackwater Worldwide was charged Friday with using straw purchases to stockpile automatic weapons at the security firm and filing false documents to cover up gifts given to the king of Jordan. Gary Jackson, 52, who left the company last year in a management shake-up, was charged along with four of his former colleagues, according to the federal indictment. The prosecution opens a new front of the government's oversight of the sullied security company. Several of the company's contractors have previously been charged with federal crimes for their actions in war zones, but the company's executives have thus far weathered a range of investigations. Blackwater has been trying to rehabilitate its image since a 2007 shooting in Baghdad that left 17 people dead, outraged the Iraqi government and led to a federal charges against several Blackwater guards — accusations later thrown out of court after a judge found prosecutors mishandled evidence. Around the time that Jackson left the company, Blackwater changed its name to Xe Services. The charges against Jackson include a conspiracy to violate firearms laws, false statements, possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered firearm. Also indicted were former Blackwater general counsel Andrew Howell, 44; former executive vice president Bill Mathews, 44; former procurement vice president Ana Bundy, 45; and former weapons manager Ronald Slezak, 65. The case stems in part from a raid conducted by federal agents at the company's headquarters in Moyock in 2008 that seized 22 weapons, including 17 AK-47s. Blackwater officials enticed the local sheriff's office to pose as the purchaser of 34 automatic weapons that would be stored on the company's campus, something prosecutors called a straw purchase, according to the indictment. The Camden County Sheriff's Office provided blank letterhead to the company, which then used the stationery to prepare letters ordering weapons. This undated handout photo provided by attorney James Sweeney, shows former Blackwater Worldwide vice president Bill Mathews. Mathews, a former Navy SEAL, was among former Blackwater employees indicted Friday on federal weapons charges. (AP Photo) added by: Almibry
