Malawi gay couple sentenced to 14 years in jail

A judge in Malawi has sentenced a gay couple to 14 years in prison with hard labour after they were convicted of gross indecency and unnatural acts. The judge said he wanted to “protect” the public. Steven Monjeza, 26, and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, have been in jail since their arrest in December 2009 after holding an engagement ceremony. Their arrest sparked international condemnation and a debate about homosexuality in the country. “I will give you a scaring sentence so that the public be protected from people like you, so that we are not tempted to emulate this horrendous example,” said Judge Nyakwawa Usiwa-Usiwa in the commercial capital, Blantyre. Defence lawyer Mauya Msuku had argued for a lighter sentence, pointing out that the pair's actions had not victimised anyone. Peter Tatchell Gay rights campaigner: “Unlike in a rape case, there was no complainant or victim in this case,” he said after the pair were convicted on Tuesday. “Here are two consenting adults doing their thing in private. Nobody will be threatened or offended if they are released into society.” Michelle Kagari, deputy Africa director of Amnesty International, called the sentence “an outrage”, reports the AP news agency. She described the pair as “prisoners of conscience” and said Amnesty would continue to campaign for them to be freed. Malawi is a conservative society where same-sex liaisons are frowned upon. The judge said same-sex relations were “un-Malawian”. But UK gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell pointed out that the laws under which the pair were convicted were introduced during British colonial rule. “These laws are a foreign imposition. They are not African,” he said, The men had denied the charges and their lawyers said their constitutional rights had been violated. But the Centre for the Development of People (Cedep) and the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) have been urging authorities to relax the country's stance on homosexuals. The BBC's Raphael Tenthani in Blantyre says the government has come under pressure from Western donors over the issue. Bring Down Monsanto…

Take action now and let's bring down Monsanto: 70% percent or more of our food contains genetically engineered food brought by the bio-tech giant: Monsanto. GMO is endangering people's health and our environment at an alarming rate. Cross-contamination is irreversible and good, organic crops are being jeopardized. These seeds are incredibly expensive compared to the traditional ones and have been genetically modified to produce their own pesticide, to survive the spraying of the: “Roundup”, a potent herbicide and to self terminate. This has lead our farmers to buy new GMO seeds each year and depend on Monsanto. As a result of this ruthless drive to use India as a testing ground for genetically modified crops, 125,000 farmers took their own lives. These people were driven to debt, to economic distress, homeless and landless. GMO has and is failing catastrophically. This company is persecuting, bullying and bringing farms to bankruptcy. GMO was never adequately tested for safety, actually more and more research shows its dangers to the human/animal health, polluting our crops and our water. Monsanto did use false advertising; Monsanto poisons the third world and privatizes water. Its employees have passed through the so-called revolving door many times, they rotated between this industry and the public agencies: Clarence Thomas, Gwendolyn S. King, Linda Fisher, Jim Travis, Linda Avery Strachanand, Toby Moffet , Marcia Hale, Donald Bandle, George H. Poste, Michael Kantor and Michael Taylor all bending rules, finding loopholes to assure this company profits. This technology is only exacerbating hunger, poverty, irreversible contamination and climate change in our world. Bring down Monsanto's monopoly on our food and a centralized agriculture. Bring down Monsanto's genetically engineered seeds. Bring down the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides and chemicals alike. Hold this company accountable for its damages to the world. Japanese government blocks a ban on child pornography

The ruling Democratic Party of Japan has refused to support legislation that would outlaw the possession of child pornography on the grounds that it would infringe individuals' freedom of expression – although there has been a stepped-up police campaign against people that sell sexual images of children. Twenty people were arrested this week for posting child pornography on a mobile phone web site that was set up by a 17-year-old high school student, while Japan was shocked earlier this year at the arrest of a mother who took indecent images of her infant son and sold them via the internet. The National Police Agency said it received 4,486 complaints from the public of child pornography on the internet in 2009 and a record 650 people were charged with offences related to child pornography. Campaigners believe that represents the tip of the iceberg. “We are urging all the political parties here to ban the possession of child pornography in the present session of parliament, but I am not at all optimistic that it will happen,” said Keiji Goto, a lawyer and chairman of the Forum for Creating a Society That Does Not Tolerate Child Pornography. In 2009 the government submitted a bill to revise the law on child pornography but lost the general election in August before it could be enacted. The DPJ opposed the bill and instead called for the definition of child pornography to be narrowed down, while acquisition for money and multiple acquisitions would be made illegal. “We consider child pornography to be the worst of all evils and we find it hard to understand how images of naked children tied up with ropes can be considered acceptable,” Goto said. “The only people who will be pleased at the failure to pass this legislation are paedophiles.” added by: cclark_productions

Former President Bill Clinton says it is “time to lower the rhetoric and talk about the facts,” in reference to the government's scrutiny of Wall Street. In an exclusive interview with Maria Bartiromo, Clinton noted that while many financial firms are being questioned by the Securities and Exchange Commission, he does not believe that Goldman Sachs or CEO Lloyd Blankfein did anything illegal, based on what he's seeing. The SEC has been probing the mortgage operations of major banks, but so far has only charged Goldman with civil fraud. The firm has said it will fight the charges and has vigorously denied any wrongdoing. Clinton says “what we ought to do is have an honest conversation about what really happened, how to fix it, and how to get what's best about vital capital markets.” more at link… An “honest conversation about what really happened” just came out of the mouth of Bill Clinton, a guy who made his career by being the best liar in the business. I guess Ponzi schemes and financial terrorism is standard practice. How about raping and pillaging? Obviously treason is legal; how else are all the same cast of Benedict Arnolds still walking around, making billions by stealing our money. It was under Bill Clinton in 1999 when his cronies, Larry Summers, Alan Greenspan, Robert Rubin repealed the Glass-Steagall Act, which is the most important Post-Depression safeguard and protector of the citizen's cash. From that point forward, the floodgates were opened for the banking oligarchs to further bankrupt this nation. Who's running the Obama white house from behind the scenes? Rahm Emanuel and Larry Summers with his puppet, little Timmy Geithner. Even Elena Kagan, Supreme Court nominee, worked for Goldman Sachs as a top adviser, where she gave “expert advice to clients.” Also, she was at Harvard with Larry Summers. Are you kidding me? End the Fed…its a private, banking cartel that is purposefully tanking our currency b/c its leaders want a New World Order and a corporate-fascist dictatorship across the globe. I think its best days still lie ahead and I believe deeply in public service. ”And I think the service our country needs right now is to face up to our really big challenges, to confront our problems, to take difficult decisions, to lead people through those difficult decisions, so that together we can reach better times ahead. ”One of the tasks that we clearly have is to rebuild trust in our political system.
