Gorillaz To Tour U.S. This Year, Without The Holograms

‘You can’t, at this point, do holograms,’ lead singer Damon Albarn explained. By James Montgomery Photo: MTV News For just about as long as they’ve been a (not real) band, Gorillaz have toyed with the idea of launching a full-blown, hologram-enhanced tour . After all, it seemed like the most logical way of bringing the group to life. The only problem? Well, as you can imagine, lugging all that 3-D equipment around gets to be a tad bit expensive. Oh, and then there’s the fact that, no matter how hard they try, Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett just can’t seem to get the hologram thing to work the way they want it to. So, while, yes, Gorillaz will be touring the U.S. later this year, if we’ll have them (“We’re coming back, going to play all around America, if they want us, of course,” Albarn smiled), they won’t be bringing the holograms with them. It seems they’ve officially closed that chapter of the band’s history … and they’ve got Madonna, with whom they “performed” at the 48th annual Grammy Awards in 2006 , to thank for that. “You can’t, at this point, do holograms. … This is what happened at the Grammys. We opened the Grammys — on television it looked great — but we had an invisible film pulled across our stage, and you project onto that, and put smoke behind it — it’s a Victorian technology, actually,” Albarn told MTV News. “So Madonna manages to come and sort of gate-crash our idea, as people like Madonna do, because that’s why they’re so deep. … She gate-crashed our idea, so we couldn’t play with any bass or any sound, because it would vibrate [the film] so it was really quiet. “So we open the Grammys, but no one could hear us, in this huge, great arena, and we were crestfallen at that moment. And I’m trying to get Bono to move, because his huge, great Stetson is obscuring my view,” he continued. “And then, our song stops, and she appears on the other side of the stage, with her inflated-ABBA riff, at full volume, and the place goes insane. And at [that] point, I just thought, ‘You know what? Sometimes, just keep it simple.’ ” Which means that fans can expect more performances like their guest-heavy Sunday night set at Coachella , with appearances by the likes of Brit rappers Kano and Bashy, De La Soul and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. There’s no word on just when their U.S. tour will kick off. E-mails to the band’s label, Capitol, were not returned by press time, but with all that hologram business now behind them, Gorillaz can focus on putting on a booming, in-your-face set. Which is all fans really want, anyway. “We want it to be powerful, and for people to feel good about it,” Albarn said. “No pun intended.” Will you check out Gorillaz in concert? Justin Bieber: Highlights From His Young Career

We round up a few of the standout moments from Bieber’s career so far. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs on “Dick Clarks’ New Years Rockin’ Eve” Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images for DCP Over the last eight months or so, Justin Bieber has quickly left his mark on pop culture. With one album released last November, My World, and with another out Tuesday, the aptly titled sophomore release My World 2.0, Bieber is the new reigning teen heartthrob in the pop world. Many MTV viewers were introduced to Bieber last September as fans vied for the chance to get a shout-out from him at the Video Music Awards. And when the competition closed, Tricia Matibag was declared the winner and Bieber gave her big ups at the big show, where he later presented an award with Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove. After gaining a bit of momentum and just weeks after releasing his debut album, a mall appearance in Long Island, New York, was canceled after fans stormed the mall for a chance to see Bieber in person. He later rang in 2010 performing on Dick Clark’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” and presented at the Grammy Awards a couple months later alongside fellow pop newbie and overnight sensation Ke$ha. He then performed at BET’s “SOS: Help For Haiti” telethon with stars like Wyclef Jean and Diddy who also helped to raise funds for Haiti earthquake relief — he also appeared on the “We Are the World” remake for the same cause. His fame isn’t relegated to North America, though — much like the mall in Long Island, Bieber caused a riot in the streets of Paris , where he was scheduled to make an in-store appearance. He also very famously met up with a crying 3-year-old fan for a segment on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show. Bieber will release My World 2.0 on Tuesday. Lil Wayne And Eminem’s ‘Drop The World’ Video Is ‘Just Energy,’ Director Says

‘You got two guys who are basically huge supernovas coming together,’ Chris Robinson tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne and Eminem perform at the 2010 Grammy Awards Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Lil Wayne feverishly filmed a series of music videos in the weeks leading up to what he thought would be his last day of freedom two weeks ago, before dental surgery postponed his prison sentence . Director David Rousseau told MTV News that the Cash Money superstar recorded up to nine videos in one weekend, though most were in front of a green screen so his image could be added later to the finished clips. One video the rapper was on the set for, however, was his upcoming clip with Eminem for “Drop the World.” The collaboration between the two esteemed MCs is the next single from Wayne’s Rebirth album. The pair performed a snippet of the track at last month’s Grammy Awards . Chris Robinson directed the “Drop the World” video and told MTV News on Tuesday (February 23) that the shoot — featuring the two heavyweight MCs — was comparable to a movie set. “As a director, it’s how do you, more than anything, combine these two artists together and create something that’s special,” he explained. “Because when you have two artists together, it’s like, ‘Oh, they’ll stand next to each other [and that’s it].’ It’s very awkward sometimes to have two very big stars. How are you gonna cover that? Especially two artists that are so big. You can do that with a performance at the Grammys, because the spectacle is to watch them onstage and sit in the audience and look at it. But as an artistic piece to have some magic, or if it’s a mood piece or whatever way you communicate the music, you have to take two people into consideration with how you do that. And for me, I almost take it like a feature film: How did Scorsese put Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio in the same movie?” The clip was filmed on the eve of the Grammys, Robinson said. It was a one-day shoot, and Wayne was on the set for upward of 14 hours. As of press time, no details regarding the premiere are available. The “Drop the World” video is still being edited, Robinson said. It’s likely the director will complete the final clip by the top of next week. Wayne is scheduled to begin his one-year jail sentence in New York on March 2 after undergoing eight root canals . Robinson wouldn’t reveal the premise of the video, but he promised the clip would match the song’s intensity. “You got two guys who are basically huge supernovas coming together, and the way that the song is constructed is great,” he said. “Because unless you see it coming, you don’t know Eminem is on the track. The first two hooks and the first two verses are all Wayne, and it’s kind of a surprise when Eminem comes through, and we matched it visually how Eminem enters the piece. From the concept and to just hearing the lyrics, with both of these amazing lyricists killing it, the whole video is just energy.” Related Artists Lil Wayne Eminem
