Eminem’s Grammy Ad Is About Capturing A ‘Journey’

‘We thought we [could] map these artists’ journeys,’ Recording Academy exec tells MTV News of unveiling series of promotional spots. By Hillary Crosley An image from Eminem’s ad for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards Photo: NARAS Eminem is looking back on his life in a new commercial presented by the Grammys, and MTV News was the first to premiere the clip , which chronicles the MC’s career, on Wednesday. The ad is part of the Recording Academy’s Music is Life is Music social-networking and promotional campaign leading up to the awards show next month. “The Grammys is about the celebration of music on many levels, so we thought we [could] map these artists’ journeys with all of them culminating on the Grammy stage on February 13,” said Evan Greene, chief marketing officer of the Recording Academy. “But artists aren’t the only ones with journeys: You remember your first concert, your first kiss, you remember all of these moments in your life and it’s tied to music.” Eminem’s piece debuted on all media platforms on Thursday (January 6), and the print portion of the Grammy campaign begins in two weeks. The Midwest rapper earned 10 Grammy nods , including Song and Record of the Year (for “Love the Way You Lie”) and Album of the Year (for Recovery, which is also up for Rap Album of the Year). He also scored noms for Best Rap Solo Performance (for “Not Afraid”), Pop Collaboration With Vocals (for his turn on B.o.B’s “Airplanes, Part II”) and Best Rap Song (for “Lie”). With all of those nominations under his belt, fans are hoping Slim Shady will actually perform one of his chart-topping 2010 hits during the festivities. When asked in a RapFix.MTV.com poll if they’d like to see Eminem take the Grammy stage, 93 percent of our blog readers voted yes. “He should perform ‘Going Through Changes’ with Elton John again. … It’s going to be epic!’ Emperor commented. Unfortunately, those at the Recording Academy aren’t giving any hints. “All of those conversations are going on in real time, and the show is literally being put together as we speak,” Greene told MTV News. “Very few artists have been 100 percent confirmed.” The Grammy Awards air Sunday, February 13 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Grammy Awards 2011: Full List of Nominations

In a sign of changing times, and of a changing Eminem, his 10 nominations for the 2011 Grammy Awards were not controversial, but predictable and respected. The rapper is nominated for album of the year along with nine honors, leading the entire music industry. Bruno Mars earned an impressive seven nods. Other top nominees included Lady Antebellum, Jay-Z and Lady Gaga, who were all nominated for six. Lady Gaga also was nominated for album of the year. Country trio Lady Antebellum was rewarded for its huge crossover successes, earning nominations for album of the year, record of the year and song of the year. Thank you,” he said. “I don’t know what to say.” Other nominees for record of the year included Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ anthem for NYC, “Empire State of Mind.” But not everyone got the love they expected. Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” was a huge hit but shut out of the record and song of the year (Katy’s Teenage Dream was nominated for album of the year). The evening’s biggest snub may belong to Ke$ha. The party girl singer had a top-selling debut and several hits, but was not nominated for any awards. On the flip side, she cannot sing, so you can sort of see it. The Roots’ ?uestlove Teams Up With Amy Winehouse

Roots drummer says the supergroup is ‘definitely going to happen.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe ?uestlove Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images Amy Winehouse will apparently be back in the studio soon — but this time she won’t be alone. According to ?uestlove , the Roots drummer has teamed up with the troubled star to form a supergroup. The influential hip-hop artist revealed in an interview with AOL’s Spinner that the duo is indeed planning to work together. The group is “definitely going to happen,” the drummer said. No name for the group has been confirmed, however, ?uesto disclosed that the singer has been in the lab with producer Salaam Remi, who worked on Winehouse’s breakout album Back to Black . The drummer gushed that the resulting work is “amazing.” While Winehouse has apparently touched base with Remi, ?uesto said that getting face time in the studio with the star has become an issue because of the embattled soul singer’s immigration issues. “It’s just that we have to work overtime to get her visa situation together. The closest she can come to the States is Jamaica.” Static with immigration has reportedly caused the singer to cancel U.S. tour dates in the past. The star also ended up accepting her Grammy Awards via satellite in 2008 due to visa problems. But even if Winehouse can’t make it across the pond, ?uesto said he’ll try to speak with the Grammy-winning star in Europe. “I’ll be in France for four, five days, so I’ll see if she’s up for discussing this over dinner.” In the meantime, the stars are chopping it up over the Internet. “We’ve been Skype-ing the sh– out of each other.” This is not ?uestlove’s first time at the supergroup rodeo. He has also been at the center of the Soulquarians , an evolving collective that has included many of the drummer’s game-changing peers such as Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def and D’Angelo. At Home With Prince, Paris & Blanket Jackson

It’s been almost a year since their famous father’s death, and Michael Jackson’s children have understandably attracted a great deal of attention in that time. We’ve seen them at his memorial service, the Grammy Awards and on YouTube. But who are they really? They’re unique individual s, each a bit like their dad. At 13, Prince Michael Jackson is, in the words of family, “very smart” and an aspiring filmmaker. A year younger, Paris Jackson is “the strongest” of the three. That’s according to their grandmother and guardian, Katherine Jackson, who recently opened up to London’s Daily Mirror about caring for the star’s children. Their baby brother Blanket (real name Prince Michael Jackson II) is, well, a baby brother. His uncle, Jermaine Jackson, says he’s a water-gun-toting prankster. “As soon as you turn your back,” he told London’s Sun of Blanket, who his own son was accused of trying to taser, “he shoots you and you’re left soaking wet.” While Katherine Jackson recently said the home-schooled Prince, Paris and Blanket ” don’t have any friends ” she says they’re going to school come September. In a separate interview with the Associated Press, Katherine Jackson’s lawyer Adam Streisand noted only that Prince Michael would be heading off to school. But deep down, they’re pretty regular kids, just like MJ wanted. They’re upbeat, they’re into video games, movies, karate, and just playing with each other. If you caught Blanket going bonkers with his light saber moves YouTube, you already know he’s come out of his shell a bit. His older siblings are no different. The children are thriving, and what is often overlooked is how Michael Jackson, who lacked a real childhood himself, raised these three without mothers. Perhaps he was more human than people gave him credit for being. “The kids are happy,” said their godfather and Michael’s friend Mark Lester , the former child actor of Oliver! fame. “Things are settling down. That’s good.”

Jay-Z Remix Of M.I.A.’s ‘XXXO’ Hits The Net

Jay raps about metrosexuals and machine guns over first single from M.I.A.’s upcoming album. By James Montgomery M.I.A. and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images It’s been a fairly quiet week for M.I.A. — no feuds with New York Times journalists , nary a “Google is a puppet of the CIA” conspiracy theory floated. But all that changed on Friday (June 11), when a Jay-Z -ified remix of her first single, “XXXO” hit the Net. The a glossy, electro-stomping reworking of M.I.A.’s original track features a brand-new verse from Jay himself, in which he proclaims, “This is not my politically correct flow.” He then proceeds to spit some great lines about metrosexuals and machine guns. There’s no word on who did the actual production work for the track, and by press time, M.I.A.’s label, Interscope, had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment. The “XXXO” remix isn’t the first time Jay and M.I.A. have collaborated together. The duo — along with Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T.I. — famously tore up the stage at the 2009 Grammy Awards with their version of “Swagga Like Us,” a performance that was made even more remarkable by the fact that M.I.A. was nine-months pregnant with her first son, Ikhyd . According to reports, M.I.A. will film a video for “XXXO” — the official first single off her album ///Y/ — with iconic hip-hop director Hype Williams. The album is due to hit stores on July 13. In the past two months, M.I.A. has stepped up her rather unorthodox promotion strategy for the album, releasing a controversial video for the song “Born Free” , feuding with Lady Gaga and taking Times reporter Lynn Hirschberg to task for a less-than-flattering cover story. Share your reviews of the Jay-Z remix of M.I.A.’s “XXXO” in the comments below. Related Artists Jay-Z M.I.A.
