‘It’s amazing for our scene to finally get the respect that I think it deserves,’ Guetta tells MTV News. By Zachary Swickey deadmau5 performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images While grandparents around the world celebrated the reunion of the Beach Boys at the 54th annual Grammy Awards , fans of electronic dance music held their glow sticks high after the dubstep movement’s leader, Skrillex (24-year-old Sonny Moore), took home three Grammys out of his impressive five nominations — not to mention the live performances from David Guetta and deadmau5 during the telecast. Skrillex — who went from fronting a screamo punk band to being a digital DJ in a few short years — managed to snag awards for Best Dance Album, Best Dance Recording (for “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”) and Best Remix (for his “Cinema” collaboration with Benny Benassi). He lost out on his other two noms, for Best New Artist (folk crooner Bon Iver took that one ) and Best Short Form Music Video (a sweeping Adele nabbed that). Check out our top 10 EDM artists of 2011! EDM’s road to the mainstream hit a high also thanks in part to the particularly awesome pairing of Lil Wayne and Chris Brown for “I Can Only Imagine” with the turntables helmed by French super-producer David Guetta, who at 44 is finally getting some Stateside love (let’s not forget his other ridiculously catchy single “Memories” with Kid Cudi and current chart-dweller “Turn Me On” with Nicki Minaj). “It’s like having a rave outside the Grammys, and I love it!” Guetta told MTV News when asked about his performance before the show. Guetta was happy the EDM community is finally getting some Grammy love, saying, “It’s really exciting, because they wanted to acknowledge electronic dance music, and I think it’s amazing for our scene to finally get the respect that I think it deserves.” An even more surprising performance came from the Foo Fighters and their electronic-music breakdown courtesy of scene icon deadmau5 (many female fans in the crowd could even be seen donning neon “mau5-hats”) for the latter half of their hit tune “Rope.” “deadmau5 is maybe the only EDM artist I know, because we did a bunch of festivals over the summer, and for whatever reason, he would be headlining over there while we were headlining over here,” Grohl told MTV News. “I guess people thought that our audiences would split, but our audiences are compatible in a way, because what he does … rocks.” deadmau5 returned the gratitude to the Foo Fighters, telling us about their performance: “It was actually really well thought out over a month or so. Dave [and the Foo Fighters] were a natural choice for me, because I love their music.” Stick with MTV News for all the news on Whitney Houston’s tribute, the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and more until the hangover wears off! David Guetta and Deadmau5 were also part of an all-star performance that paid tribute to EDM Sunday night. By James Dinh Foo Fighters perform at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images EDM’s road to the mainstream limelight hit a high on Sunday (February 12) when David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Deadmau5 and, most surprisingly, the Foo Fighters joined together at the 54th Grammy Awards to pay tribute to electronic music. Introduced by host LL Cool J, Chris Brown made his way through a sea of audience members, donning his best Run DMC gear. Leaving the dancing to the crowd, Breezy crooned to the tune of his David Guetta collaboration “I Can Only Imagine” as the DJ/producer jumped behind his turntables set. But the star power didn’t stop there: Lil Wayne appeared shortly after to spit his verse of the duet amid the flashing neon backdrop and jumping fans. Once the song ended, smoke filled the air and the other side of the stage lit up to reveal the Foo Fighters. As they previously revealed to MTV News, the rock group left the dancing to the pros and stuck to what they’re good at: rocking out. Marking their second performance of the night, the band performed their single “Rope,” before transitioning into Deadmau5’s glow-in-the-dark light set . At the time of the performance, the Foos had already nabbed four awards, including Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album, Best Hard/Rock Metal Performance and Best Long Form Music Video. MTV News recently caught up with frontman Dave Grohl, who confessed that there isn’t much of a gap between the Foos’ rock and the electronic genre. Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards “Well, Deadmau5 is maybe the only EDM artist I know because we did a bunch of festivals over the summer, and for whatever reason, he would be headlining over there while we were headlining over here,” Grohl said. “I guess people thought that our audiences would split, but our audiences are compatible in a way, because what he does … rocks.” What did you think of the EDM tribute performance? Justin Vernon and company also took home Best Alternative Album Grammy for self-titled album Sunday night. By Zachary Swickey Bon Iver wins Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Like Arcade Fire ‘s surprise Album of the Year win at last year’s Grammys , Bon Iver taking home Best New Artist on Sunday night (February 12) over more established artists like Nicki Minaj was bound to raise a few eyebrows. And when you asked “Who are Arcade Fire?” in 2012, we had you covered, and we’ve been following Wisconsin singer Justin Vernon (the man behind Bon Iver) for quite some time — long before he snagged BNA and Best Alternative Album at this year’s ceremony. Quite the pleasant surprise for the under-the-radar folk singer, who recently became the face of a Bushmills whiskey ad to boot. Bon Iver’s second, self-titled disc was released in early 2011 but is still clearly getting the attention it deserves. He may have made a few public derogatory comments about the Grammy Awards ceremony itself, but that didn’t sway the voters or the singer from showing up. To put his “underground” status into perspective: Bon Iver debuted at #2 in June 2011 on sales of just under 104,000, but their total album sales to date (just over 357,000) are nothing compared to a powerhouse-seller like Adele’s 21 . A helpful primer on Justin Vernon/ Bon Iver: The former All-State high school football star and World Religion college major began his career playing in the jazzy party band Mount Vernon, which transitioned into DeYarmond Edison, formed with some old high school pals who all moved to North Carolina in 2005 to spread their musical wings. A year later, things fell apart with his band and his girlfriend, just as he was laid low by a vicious bout of mono, driving Vernon back to Eau Claire for some physical and psychic healing. He holed up in isolation in a deer-hunting log cabin built by his dad in the woods in northwestern Wisconsin and began writing the high and lonesome songs that would become For Emma. After months spent drinking and watching “Northern Exposure” DVDs, he alighted on the name Bon Iver, which is a French phrase used as a greeting in the show that translates to “good winter.” The tunes he recorded were intended as a demo, but once they got some blog love, he was signed to indie Jagjaguwar, and For Emma was released in May 2008. The album became an indie sensation, and its mix of acoustic folk and manipulated, Auto-Tuned vocals not only landed him on the “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” soundtrack, but also on a number of songs from Kanye West’s Grammy-nominated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards Even as his star was rising, Vernon kept collaborating with a number of other artists, lending his voice to the indie supergroup Gayngs, playing in the side project Volcano Choir and hooking up with English singer James Blake recently on the song “Fall Creek Boys Choir.” Bon Iver continued to be his main focus, so Vernon built his own cabin to record his self-titled project, again just outside of Eau Claire, turning what used to be an indoor pool into a recording studio where he tracked the songs mostly by himself. (The live version of the band includes a drummer, guitarist and bassist.) The denser, 10-track album featured help from a number of collaborators, including renowned session player and pedal steel maestro Greg Leisz, as well as a number of percussionists and horn and string players. MC’s rap alter ego levitates and speaks in tongues against a fiery backdrop at Sunday’s show. By Tomika L. Anderson Nicki Minaj performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj may have walked away Grammy -less on Sunday (February 12), but she still managed to deliver one of the most talked-about performances of the night. In the show’s final act the animated rap star — who lost out to Bon Iver for “Best New Artist” — channeled her infamous alter ego Roman Zolanski onstage, leading the audience through a rap exorcism of sorts. At one point, she even levitated, while speaking in tongues and jumping around against a fiery backdrop. Minaj caused a Twitter frenzy earlier in the night when she hit the red carpet wearing a blood-red, hooded robe accompanied by a man dressed like the Pope, and she continued her spirited church-act onstage. Minaj marched out sporting a brown ball gown and long, bleached-blond locks, and performed a skit before launching into her new single, “Roman Holiday,” from her upcoming sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. It was a show that Lady Gaga (who was also missed by the Grammy fairy this go-round) would have been proud of. In a pre-taped skit, Minaj was surrounded by stained glass and other religious imagery, eerily putting on lipstick, singing “I Feel Pretty.” She then climbed a wall to have an exchange with the strange Pope-like figure, a man who’s real identity remains unknown. After being strapped to a leather lab table onstage, she rapped backed by a goth-looking church choir that sang a haunting version of “Come All Ye Faithful.” At the crescendo, she was lifted by an invisible rope into the Grammy sky. Shooting flames helped to complete the fiery, head-scratching number. Rihanna and Coldplay perform ‘Princess of China’ for the first time on TV. By John Mitchell Rihanna performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Sprawled out on the floor under a red light and accompanied at first by just a piano, Rihanna hit the stage at the 54th Grammy Awards for a dance-heavy take on her massive #1 hit “We Found Love.” The performance kicked off like a scene straight out of the thematically dark video for the track , with the Barbadian pop star leaning against a wall looking troubled under dark lighting with only a piano playing alongside her as she sang the track like a torch ballad. Looking gorgeous — and giving off a Tina Turner vibe — Rihanna rocked the blond locks she introduced recently, wearing a tight, belly-baring ensemble. The laser lights, LED screens and synths kicked up soon enough, though, and Rihanna welcomed dancers to the stage and lit into a high-energy performance of the dance smash that kept with the feel of the song, devolving into a full-on rave, with the pop star front and center. Like many other performers and presenters at the show, Rihanna took a moment to honor the late Whitney Houston , demanding the audience, “Make some noise for Whitney!” Soon, the tempo backed down and the dancers departed, leaving Rihanna onstage with just Chris Martin strumming an acoustic guitar. The pair then started into the televised debut of their Mylo Xyloto collaboration “Princess of China.” “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit. When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it,” Chris Martin told MTV News of the pop princess’ involvement last fall. “And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music.” Coldplay finished things up on an upbeat not with their song “Paradise.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off! Swift performs her newly Grammy-winning track ‘Mean’ following a performance by her ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack collaborators. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Taylor Swift ‘s opening act for her 2012 Grammy Awards performance was her “Hunger Games” soundtrack collaborators the Civil Wars, who took the stage to perform their track “Barton Hallow.” The duo praised Swift for already winning two prizes for the night, Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “Mean.” “It’s our great honor to welcome a two-time winner already tonight, our friend Taylor Swift,” they said before the singer took the stage. Playing a banjo, Swift wore a baggy light-pink dress and her hair done up in a loose braid for her performance of her Grammy-winning song. Her band, also wearing vintage-style clothing, backed her surrounded by abandoned-looking relics like big wooden doors and floorboards that evoked the country twang of the track. Check out photos from the Grammys red carpet 2012. Mid-song, Swift made her way across the stage, keeping the honky-tonk going, as she sassily looked into the camera and sang the Speak Now track. As she wrapped up the performance, she earned a standing ovation, and in true Swift style, she seemed stunned by all the love radiating her way. The video for Taylor and the Civil Wars’ “Hunger Games” song “Safe & Sound” will premiere on “MTV First: Taylor Swift” on Monday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an exclusive chat with Swift. After Monday’s video premiere — which will also air live on MTV’s channels in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa — the Grammy winner will sit down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway for a 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Fans of the superstar can get in on the action by submitting questions via Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtags #AskTaylor or #MTVFirst. CMT will air “Safe & Sound” at 8 p.m. ET, the same time the music video will debut exclusively online at MTV.com, CMT.com, VH1.com and MTV’s international sites. On Tuesday morning, VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” will feature the video at 10 a.m. ET/PT. The “Hunger Games” soundtrack, which also features Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, drops March 20. The movie hits theaters days later, on March 23. ‘It affects the tone overall,’ host tells MTV News on the red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Whitney Houston Photo: FilmMagic Whitney Houston is set to be honored at the 2012 Grammy Awards on Sunday night, when Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Kahn take the stage to pay tribute to the fallen star, who died suddenly and tragically Saturday in Los Angeles. MTV News had the pleasure of speaking to Grammys host LL Cool J on the red carpet , and he shed some light on the conversations that went down before Sunday’s big show as producers scrambled to fit a tribute to the star into the show. “We were up all night, and we just wanted to figure out [and] show Whitney Houston the love, the appreciation, the love, the respect she deserves based on her as a human being and the career that she had and give her that love and make sure that people know we care,” LL explained. “And we are connected to her in that way.” But LL noted that while Houston deserves love at the show, producers also want to make sure that every artist involved with Sunday’s broadcast gets the attention they deserve as well. “At the same time, there are so many other artists here that are nominated. This is a new Grammy experience for some of them, some are back again, and they deserve to have a good time and enjoy themselves and not be weighed down by the burden,” noting that it was “about finding a balance. I think we got it right. We’re gonna find out.” As for his own responsibilities as a host, he explained, “It affects it. It affects how I open. It affects the tone overall. We’re not gonna get here and then change the rules on the artist; we’re gonna celebrate her life… and then give them room so that they can go out there and do what they do.” Speaking about the tribute, Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich said in a statement, “It’s too fresh in everyone’s memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize Whitney’s remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off!
