Wolfgang Gartner Calls Grammy Nomination ‘A Total Surprise’

DJ/producer is readying a new album and his first official music video. By Akshay Bhansali Wolfgang Gartner Photo: MTV News After an impressive year boasting strong singles “Conscindo” (with Mark Knight), “Undertaker” and “Animal Rights” (with deadmau5) , Austin, Texas, electro-house maestro Wolfgang Gartner was particularly ecstatic when we caught up with him this week. Gartner, born Joey Youngman, is nominated for a 2011 Grammy in the Best Remixed Recording (Non Classical) category for his mix of house-music producer Andy Caldwell’s “Funk Nasty” (featuring vocals by Gram’ma Funk). In February, he will face off against Morgan Page’s remix of Nadia Ali’s “Fantasy,” David Guetta’s mix of Madonna’s “Revolver,” Mike Rizzo’s mix of Brazilian legend Sergio Medes’ “Orpheus” and the Dirty South and Axwell mix of Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition.” “It was a total surprise to me,” Gartner said. “I didn’t even know that it was Grammy nomination time. Somebody on Twitter said, ‘Congratulations on your Grammy nomination,’ and I ran over to my computer and looked on the site, and there it was. Yeah, it’s awesome. Obviously, it’s a milestone to be nominated for a Grammy, especially [with] other nominees I have so much respect for.” While the Grammy nod caps an already-colossal year for the DJ/producer, Gartner isn’t planning to slow down. Next week, he drops Space Junk, a 12-track studio effort full of typically sinister, melody-driven electro-house bangers along with some new sounds. “The response has been great,” he said of Space Junk. “We sent out the promos. I know a bunch of people are playing it so far: Ti

Eminem Producer Alex Da Kid Is ‘Confident’ In His Grammy Chances

Two of his songs — Em’s ‘Love the Way You Lie’ and B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ — are facing off for Record of the Year. By Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Producer Alex Da Kid has had quite the year, collaborating with Eminem and Rihanna on the chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” as well as B.o.B and Hayley Williams on the equally anthemic “Airplanes.” Now that the 2011 Grammy nominations have been announced, Alex has racked up a few nods, and his two biggest hits will even duke it out for Record of the Year. MTV News caught up with Alex via phone Thursday (December 2), and he said he was extremely excited about the recognition but wasn’t surprised: He knew these songs would put him on the map from day one. “I remember sitting in the studio with Em and being like, ‘I’m writing my Grammy speech right now,’ ” Alex recalled. “He hates all that stuff, and he hates it when I say stuff like that, but I really believed in it from the start.” Alex’s first major song was B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” which he said paved the way for his second Grammy-nominated song, “Love the Way You Lie.” Eminem — who received 10 nominations himself — is featured on “Airplanes Pt. II,” and Alex said their relationship grew from there. The rookie producer faces stiff competition in the Record of the Year category — where he faces off against Cee Lo’s “F— You,” Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” — but Alex remains confident about his chances. “I mean, I think they’re pretty good,” he told MTV News of his pair of tracks. “I’m a confident person, and they’re my favorite songs out of the category we’re in, but you never know.” Do you think Alex has a good shot come Grammy night? Christina Aguilera Talks About ‘Unhealthy’ Marriage, New Romance

‘We just weren’t right for each other. I couldn’t face living another five years [together],’ the singer tells People magazine. By James Dinh Christina Aguilera Photo: Denise Truscello/ Wireimage After nearly five long years, Christina Aguilera’s marriage to Jordan Bratman had deteriorated. The powerhouse singer, who filed for divorce in October, opens up about her “unhealthy and unhappy” relationship in the new issue of People magazine , and also speaks about her budding new romance. “Things were so unhealthy and unhappy for both Jordan and me, I knew I had to end it,” Aguilera explains candidly in the issue. “It wasn’t good for us, and it wasn’t good for [our son] Max to witness out arguments. When you’re unhappy in a marriage, your children are the ones who suffer. That’s the last thing I wanted for my son.” As noted in her hit single “Fighter,” the songstress wasn’t going to let her marriage fall apart without a fight. Aguilera tells the magazine that they tried to spend some family time together on a trip to Italy, but unfortunately things just didn’t work out.” While Xtina tried her best to work out the romance, she ultimately got a reality check when she returned home from shooting her sparkling new musical, “Burlesque,” in March. “When I finished filming, I didn’t feel right in my own shoes [at home],” she said. “I had a lot of things stirring inside of me that I felt were being suppressed. We just weren’t right for each other. I couldn’t face living another five years [together].” So what’s the deal with her new boyfriend, Matthew Rutler? Aguilera admits he’s “a special person,” whom she met on the set of “Burlesque.” “We had a really strong friendship on the movie. He’s the kind of person you could spend hours on the phone talking to and all of a sudden it’s daylight. Once I filed for divorce, we started dating.” When asked if she’s in love, the singer explained that there’s something special in Rutler, saying, “There’s a love there, yes. I’m having fun, I’m dating and it’s something I haven’t had in a really long time.” What do you think about Christina’s new romance? Sound off in the comments! Monica Says Grammy Noms Confirm Her Comeback

‘This is where I’m supposed to be at this point in my life,’ Still Standing singer tells MTV News of her two nominations. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Lacsina Monica Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Monica proclaimed she was Still Standing on her Grammy-nominated album , and the “Boy is Mine” singer is surprised that the album is being recognized in such a big way. The singer is up for two awards, including Best R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the song “Everything to Me,” from the album. “I wasn’t expecting anything from this album other than me to reconnect with the fans, so it was just an honor to be thought of by your peers and the Grammy Association,” she told MTV News. “It’s just that confirmation that I needed that this is where I’m supposed to be at this point in my life, because I was very happy with being a stay-at-home mom. “So, to come back after such a long hiatus, it’s just a good feeling, and I’m still in shock. Nothing’s really set in.” With two chances at taking home a prize come February, Monica admits that she doesn’t care which one she takes home. “I take everything one day at a time, one moment at a time — what’s meant will be,” she explained. “I think it’s an honor to be nominated. Some people say it and don’t mean it, but I know how hard it is to be a part of this type of awards show, so I’m happy just being there. I’ll be there with my children, having a great time, just looking forward to the day.” And Monica isn’t willing to place any bets on any of the other Grammy nominees. “It’s gonna be up to the people, because one thing that happens is that they get the chance to really decide,” she explained. “The Grammy Association, being a part of it, I learned about the way that it really happens. So, it’ll be the voice of the people, and you never really know. “It’s whichever fans go the hardest and put in the most work.” Are you rooting for Monica to take home a Grammy?
