Did Karl Urban Accidentally Reveal Star Trek 2’s New Villain?

Or is he just effing with us? While doing press for his upcoming Dredd , Karl Urban seemed to let slip the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch ‘s Star Trek 2 character. Was he telling the truth or not? Right now, there is evidence for both sides. First, some background. 1. J.J. Abrams ‘ own origin story is based around his grandfather gifting him with a “Mystery Box.” It is, therefore, wonderfully ironic that he should be the current quarterback of the entire Star Trek franchise, a massive shared universe whose rabid fans are obsessive, meticulous and savvy enough to translate Shakespeare into its made-up language. Excuse me, one of its made-up languages. As a result, we still don’t know the name of the villain in the forthcoming Star Trek sequel. 2. Many years ago it leaked that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci had delivered a script wherein Gary Mitchell – Captain Kirk’s Starfleet Academy chum turned ESP-monster from the early Trek episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” – would be the heavy. I personally heard this from a guy who was inside and had some intel. 3. The rumor goes that Abrams didn’t like this script and sent everyone back to the drawing board. A Gary Mitchell storyline in the “new universe” Star Trek comics (that only mouthbreathers like I read) appears, effectively “putting that story to use.” Then we started hearing that Khan Noonien Singh – you know, the guy from KHAAAAAAAN – was going to be the baddie. A casting offer to Benicio Del Toro seemed to confirm this – even though Khan is supposed to be a Sikh, not Hispanic, but only hardcore dweebs like to bring this up. 4. Benedict Cumberbatch (pictured above) is cast. He doesn’t look like a genetically enhanced poet-warrior. (But, really, who is to say?) It is accepted by most people that he is playing Khan. Then Simon Pegg says “ No Khan .” Fair enough. 5. Now today’s news. Karl Urban, in yapping about the upcoming Dredd , lets this slip to SFX : “[Benedict Cumberbatch’s] awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.” Wow, so it was Gary all along? Open and shut, right? But wait! 6. Just a few weeks back, Roberto Orci gave a list of Star Trek characters that are NOT in the film . Among them: Gary Mitchell. Here’s the thing. Normally, a gaffe from an actor during a press day is a great way to squeeze info out of someone. They are tired and they can’t remember what’s already out there and what is being held for strategic marketing reveals. (These are called SMRs in Hollywood.) (No they’re not, I just made that up.) However, I think Urban might be throwing a red herring on purpose. I had the good fortune to shmooze with the guy once – at the very genre-friendly Fantastic Fest in Austin. He was pitching Red , but we got to discussing Star Trek and “The Nrrd Life” in general and he struck me as someone who really got it. If ever there was a guy who’d be so on board to screw with the heads of fanboys, it’d be him. Luckily, Urban will be moderating the Masters of the Web panel at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con , and you can rest assured the online press (our own Jen Yamato among them) will put the screws to him. Personally, I think having Gary Mitchell is cooler than having Khan, but I’d prefer if the Trek brain trust were, you know, boldly going where no man had gone before. In a remake-happy culture, that may be too much to ask for. Anyway, here’s Captain Kirk and Gary Mitchell fighting on Delta Vega. Sally Kellerman and her creepy contact lenses can only look on. North Korea Seeks Image Makeover; Kim Jong Un to Permit Earrings, Cellphones, Pizza

Seeking an image makeover for himself and his impoverished, rogue nation, North Korea’s youthful supreme leader is implementing some new social policies. Among them: Allowing women to wear pants, platform shoes and earrings, making mobile phones available, and endorsing previously banned foods like pizza. Kim Jong Un, 28, who took over after the death of Kim Jong Il last year, is also giving kids free trips to zoos and amusement parks. What a guy, right? Following in the footsteps of his late grandfather, the country’s founder Kim Il Sung, he has announced plans to create a “children’s heaven nation.” “It’s part of his plan to imitate a warm, fatherly impression ,” said Dong Yong-Sueng, North Korea specialist at Samsung Economic Research Institute. Kim Jong Un clearly wants to establish an image that harkens back to what some North Koreans nostalgically remember as better times in the 1970s. Under his grandfather, the country’s founder Kim Il Sung, the country was economically backed by the USSR and had sufficient food to feed the nation. Kim Jong Il, by contrast, was seen as a strong but cold leader. His reign, which began in 1994, was marked by escalating conflict and soaring poverty. The image of the leader has significance in a tightly controlled society, and Kim Jong Un has sought to embrace the youthful energy of the country. Whether cellphones and pizza accomplish that remains to be seen.

New Spike Lee Movie “Red Hook Summer” Trailer: Looks Dope! [Video]

Red Hook Summer Movie Trailer By Spike Lee The latest in Spike Lee’s Chronicles of Brooklyn anthology–which also includes “She’s Gotta Have It” (1986), “Do The Right Thing” (1989), “Crooklyn” (1994), “Clockers” (1995), and “He Got Game” (1998)–RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters), in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather’s constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer appears to be a total disaster–until he meets Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith), a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he’d ever imagined. youtube

My name is Reiko, I’m from NYC and I met Justin on…

My name is Reiko, I’m from NYC and I met Justin on 6/20/12. My friends and I figured out where he was staying, so we decided to go. The first day we went, there was around 25 girls there and we waited for about 2 hours until he came out. He was going to take pictures but all of the girls went crazy and started screaming so he just left to go to The View, but he rolled down the window and as he was driving away he was like, “Go to The View, for me!” and he left. I had to leave, and a few days past by with no luck. On Wednesday I decided to go to the hotel again and there weren’t many people girls, only six girls because everyone else was at David Letterman, or the buyout. We decided to just wait at the hotel. The first time my friends said he came out and didnt even say hi, and he just drove away, but we weren’t mad. Obviously we understood if Justin didn’t want to take pictures this one time, since he always takes pictures and is always so nice. After a few hours, we saw his car come up, and Moshe came out, then his grandfather came out and we all waved, (he is so nice too) and then Justin came out and he came up to us. We started taking pictures and he goes, “Can we use one camera so it’s faster?” and we decided to use my camera which was a nikonD3100, and I started taking pictures of the girls, and he goes, “This girl is so nice!” and when I went to get my picture, he was so sweet. He made sure everyone got pictures then went back into the hotel. He stopped at the back and got out of his car for us and then just walked to the front. He could’ve just went through the garage without doing or saying anything, but he didn’t. We also made sure my two friends that never got a picture with him had gotten a picture first. He was so nice. For those who didn’t meet him, no worries you’ll get your turn. Words cannot explain how much he cares about us beliebers, he CARES. He doesnt only want fame and fortune, like some other artists. Thats what makes him so special, him and his music is so inspirational. In the picture with Alfredo and I, he came out through the front and my friend goes, “That’s Alfredo!” so we go up to him and after my friends asked for her picture since she never met him before and she loved him. I went up to him and asked for a kissing picture and he kissed me on the cheek and he smelled so good! hahahah! The Bieber Crew in general is so sweet and unbelievably caring. Never Say Never, right? -@itsreikooo   Read this article: My name is Reiko, I’m from NYC and I met Justin on…

Lady Gaga Does Not Believe in Divorce

Lady Gaga, who just broke up with Taylor Kinney , says that when she does decide to get married, it will be for good. Divorce is not an option. Though she’s been known to shock with her outlandish outfits and raunchy stage shows, the Born This Way singer insists marriage is for life . On The Conversation With Amanda De Cadenet (so much for that self-imposed media blackout ) which aired in the US last week, she said: “My grandmother… was married to my grandfather for 60 years. My parents are still together, 30 years. Divorce is not an option for me.” “It’s like, ‘I’m gonna get married and that’s it. He’s stuck with me’.” The star explained that her mother and father had “stuck it out” through tough times and she plans to work just as hard on her own marriage. “I want to eventually find a man that feels the same way – about divorce not being an option,” she said. “Working through everything together, even if it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever been through, you just stick it out.” The rumored hermaphrodite and unquestioned superstar also admitted recently that she finds love “terrifying.” She’s nothing if not up front.

‘Five-Year Engagement’ Cast Reveals How They Keep Composure

Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and Alison Brie share with MTV News cures for avoiding on-set laughter: ‘I just think of really dark, morbid stuff.’ By Kara Warner Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Chris Pratt and Alison Brie in “The Five-Year Engagement” Photo: Universal Pictures Whenever a movie features a very talented cast of actors who are also great comedians, it’s easy to assume that many laughs and bloopers occurred during filming. Take the upcoming romantic comedy “Five-Year Engagement” for example, which boasts the very funny ensemble of writer/actor Jason Segel , Emily Blunt , Alison Brie (“Community”) and Chris Pratt (“Parks and Recreation”) to name a few. When MTV News sat down with the cast to talk about the film recently, we asked how they keep their cool to avoid ruining a scene when a castmember does something particularly amusing. “I have a lot of experience trying not to break on the set of ‘Community’ working with a lot of funny people,” Alison Brie explained. “I consider it a personal challenge when working with Ken Jeong to not break in scenes with him, and he’s ridiculously funny, so I had that under my belt.” Regarding her methods for maintaining a straight face, Brie said, “I just stay in character — professional! Look, I just think of really dark, morbid stuff. I don’t want to tell you; it’s going to make you depressed.” Segel revealed he learned his lesson early in his career: “I’m terrified of breaking, because Judd Apatow screamed at me once when I was very young on ‘Freaks and Geeks.’ I was laughing, and I was young, and looking back, he was just trying to scare me, but he said, ‘Every time you break, it costs me thousands of dollars!’ And since then, I’m terrified of breaking.” Blunt blames “nervous energy” for her on-set laughter. “I laugh at everything,” she shared. “I found myself laughing at my grandfather’s funeral because I had that nervous energy, and you don’t know how to cope. I think the more pressure I’m under from the cast and crew not to laugh, the better I do.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Five-Year Engagement.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘American Idol’ Castoff Shannon Magrane Doesn’t Regret Tackling Mariah Carey

Eliminated 16-year-old tells MTV News that Carey’s power ballad ‘One Sweet Day’ has sentimental value. By Christina Garibaldi Shannon Magrane Photo: MTV News Although Shannon Magrane was sent packing on last week’s episode of “American Idol,” the 16-year-old Tampa, Florida, native has no hard feelings about her early elimination. On Monday (March 19), Magrane stopped by the MTV Newsroom and reflected on her fun, if brief time on the “Idol” stage. “It’s hard, you never know what America is thinking,” Magrane admitted. “It’s crazy, but I loved it. It was a great learning experience for me. I loved every minute of it.” During her final performance, Magrane took on Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” which received relatively positive remarks from the judges. But in the end, that wasn’t enough to save her from elimination. And while “Idol” judges usually advise contestants to stay away from Carey’s power ballads, Magrane has no regrets about her song choice. “I was happy I sang that song,” Magrane said. “What not a lot of people know about that was that I chose that song because it was a song that me and my Papa sang together,” she added of the tribute to her grandfather. “And [I] sang it because before he passed away, that was our favorite song that he would always sing to me. I just felt emotionally connected to that song.” Magrane wasn’t the only contestant eliminated on “American Idol” last week. Jermaine Jones made a surprising exit after producers claimed he misled them about his history of arrests. The news was a shock to viewers but also to the contestants. “That was definitely one of the biggest shockers on ‘Idol’ that I’ve ever seen so far, and I’ve been watching it since I was a little girl. That was a big shocker,” Magrane said. “We all found out when America found out, we were all so shocked … we were so sad because he was one of the people that were the funniest people in our group. He was always making people feel happy and laugh all the time.” Magrane’s 11th-place elimination means she’ll miss out on the singing show’s summer tour but she told us she plans to attend. For now, the teen just has her sights set on making her mark in the music industry — and finishing high school. “I still have to go to school; I still have school work to do. But on top of that, I’m still going to be working on my dream,” Magrane said. “I really want to be a triple threat. I want to be like Beyonc
