Bolivia’s Capital City Faces Catastrophic Drought As Lake Titicaca Dries

Photo via y2k_sflam The word “catastrophic” seems like it should be overkill, but when it comes to drought caused by an increase in global temperatures, that’s just what the residents of La Paz, Bolivia’s capital city, will experience as their city turns to desert. Researchers focused on the history of famous Lake Titicaca to surmise that if the globe heats up, the lake will shrink down to levels that not only can’t support agriculture, but will also effect the weather patterns and shrink rainfall levels. The grasslands will turn to de… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Study Estimates 8,000 Premature Deaths Per Year Caused by Unregulated Airplane Emissions

Image: ACS, Barrett et al. And That’s Just Cruise Emissions Researchers from MIT and the University of Cambridge in the UK have released a study that attributes about 8,000 premature deaths to emissions from airplanes at cruise altitudes. Landing and takeoff also produce a significant quantity of pollutants, but they are already regulated, while cruising at altitudes of over 3,000 feet isn’t (at least not worldwide)…. The "No Make-Up Challenge" Shows Gorgeous Faces Without Toxic Goop

Images via No More Dirty Looks No More Dirty Looks is a book and website we’ve covered on TreeHugger before. It’s the project of two women who uncover how toxic our “beauty” regimes can be if we aren’t paying attention to the products we’re buying. But the blog ran a challenge last week asking people to skip make-up altogether, safe or not. And the results show that maybe being dedicated to a make-up routine is a bunch of hooey in the firs… Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Chevy Volt Goes on a Tour of the USA

Image: GM I Have a Special Request for GM To promote the launch of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, 6 Volts are about to embark on a cross-country tour. Over 3,400 miles and stops in 12 major cities are planned (see the schedule below), with special events where people will be able to do test-drives and talk to GM engineers. It all sounds good, but there’s something I’d like to request from GM and that I think would make this whole thing a lot more interested: Once all this is all over, I’d like GM to release details on how many gallons of gasoline and how many kWh of electricity were used during this ro… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Noisy Coral Reefs = Healthy Coral Reefs?

Photo: Flickr , CC You Just Have to Listen Closely Scientists from Exeter University and Bristol University might have just found a new way to evaluate the condition of coral reefs. It’s pretty simple when you think about it: You just listen. Indeed, each reef has its own noise signature, and reefs with more corals and fish generate predictably greater levels of noise. By analyzing the sound, you can find out lots of things about both the fish and the corals. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Electric Cars Best Way to Reduce Oil Consumption, Study Says

Photo: Wikipedia , CC Yes, But Look at the Bigger Picture According to a study by Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, if the U.S. wants to significantly reduce its oil consumption, it should prioritize the fast adoption of electric cars over ” the proposed national renewable portfolio standard”. This makes a lot of sense, as a renewable portfolio standard would mostly have an impact on electricity production and not liquid fuels, but what the st… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Recycled Milk Crates Transformed Into Living Pavilion: Behin + Ha

More crate-crazed creativity than you can shake a stick at — this time, in the shape of a curvaceous, wave-form pavilion made from an assemblage of recycled white milk crates. But that’s not all — the crates aren’t just stand-alone components, they also serve as suspended beds for the greenery that lines the inside of the structure — a pretty inventive way to turn a wall of crates into a living skin…. New Map Shows Air Pollution Throughout the World

Image via NASA Scientists have long known about the life-threatening impact of air pollution — but up until now, tracking it globally with any accuracy had been out of reach. With new satellite-based imaging, however, researchers are getting their first peek at how particulate matter is distributed around the world, and in places where air pollution had been difficult to measure with any accuracy before — an important step towards … Read the full story on TreeHugger
