Can Pia Toscano Or Thia Megia Win ‘American Idol’?

Experts weigh in on the top 12 women and their chances of making it through to the finals. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Thursday night is when some “American Idol” dreams will come true, and a dozen or more will be crushed and sprinkled all across the seizure-inducing new IdolDome stage. But before all that carnage and celebration, we once again turned to some of our “Idol” experts to make some predictions about this season’s front-runners after the top 12 women did their thing on Wednesday night. Because he just can’t get enough of all things “Idol,” we turned to MTV News’ resident expert Jim Cantiello for his take on which ladies soared and which ones crashed and burned. Despite a few serious stinkers, JC said he continues to be shocked by the caliber of vocalists on the show this season. “You believe that these were the finest singers they found while on the road,” he said, noting two “atom-bomb-sized surprises” on Wednesday night. His first revelation was former housekeeper Lauren Turner, whose choice of Etta James’ “Seven Day Fool” he deemed perfect and full of attitude. “[She] stood out from the pack with her gravelly blues voice and in-your-face performance style,” he said. The other big surprise was show-closer Pia Toscano , the raven-haired beauty who sang the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You,” which he said, “dug deep and showed off her pitch-perfect pipes. Her range was sick, she had confidence, she effortlessly hit some major power notes. America stood up and noticed, as did the judges, who gave her the first official standing ovation of season 10.” If he had to pick a stand-out front-runner, though, at this point, Cantiello is still going with 16-year-old sassafras Lauren Alaina. “[It’s her] race to lose,” he said. “She’s everything ‘Idol’ is looking for. [She] got up onstage and looked like she could have commanded a live audience 10 times bigger without flinching. She has stage presence, a powerful voice, and she has a unique ability to live somewhere in between R&B, pop and country.” And while he thought the Carrie Underwood/Kelly Clarkson comparisons from Randy Jackson were not off the mark, Cantiello wondered if Alaina’s need to always be the center of attention might start grating on voters’ nerves? As for the other 16-year-old, Jim said Thia Megia has great pitch and a large fanbase, but he just can’t “picture her at the Nokia, covered in confetti. Unless she steps up her personality.” A great measure of how polarizing “Idol” contestants can be is the list of hot prospects submitted by Top Idol blog founder Melinda Green. One of her favorite performances was from this year’s obligatory oddball, Rachel Zevita. Though the judges thought Zevita blew it with her jazzy, off key take on Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” Green loved it. “I really hope we see more of her. Alas, I think the judges would prefer sending through Ashthon Jones,” Green said of the Nashville native with the giant, blow-out hairdo whose sultry cover of Monica’s “Love All Over Me” earned raves. Green wasn’t sipping the “Idol” juice, though. “Every performance I’ve seen of this girl has been the same tired R&B diva wannabe shtick we’re treated to every season,” she said. She also liked Naima Adedapo, but is looking for more personality from the Erykah Badu-like singer and clothing designer. Lamenting how many of Wednesday night’s singers opted for tunes we’ve heard a dozen times in past seasons, Green said Karen Rodriguez made it interesting by singing half of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” in Spanish, but wondered if it was a bit too obvious pandering to judge Jennifer Lopez. Green agreed with Cantiello that Alaina might start to strike some viewers as a “precocious coquette as taught by her stage mother” and said despite her “perfect tone,” Thia Megia may not have the emotional maturity to connect with the songs she’s singing. “With this year’s emphasis on youth and the show’s clear aim of getting a viable female winner, we’ll be forced to see more of both Thia and Lauren Alaina,” she lamented. Bottom line, Green agreed that Toscano can go far and just needs to show more personality and that Turner has the goods that could take her deep into the competition. “She’s got the kind of voice I love,” she said, agreeing with Randy Jackson’s description of Turner as a mix of Amy Winehouse and Florence Welch. “If ‘American Idol’ wants current, they best do everything they can to keep Lauren Turner around. She’s the real deal, no theatrics, just raw talent.” Do you agree with our experts? Who do you think is headed for elimination tonight? Let us know in the comments below! Christina Aguilera To Be Judge On ‘The Voice’

Aguilera joins panelists Cee Lo and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine on reality singing competition. By Aly Semigran Christina Aguilera Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Just one day after her arrest on a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication , Christina Aguilera is making headlines again, only this time for more favorable reasons. The singer has officially signed on to be a celebrity judge for NBC’s upcoming talent competition “The Voice.” Billboard reported on Wednesday (March 2) that the Grammy winner will join host Carson Daly and fellow judges Cee Lo Green and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine on the “American Idol”-style program. “I am so excited to be part of such a wonderful project that celebrates music and the talent behind it. To be given the opportunity to help shape new artists’ careers and mentor them to see their dreams come to fruition is a task I welcome with open arms,” Aguilera said in a statement. “I am so happy to be working with fellow Grammy Award winners Adam and Cee Lo as I feel there is so much we can all bring to ‘The Voice’.” Aguilera has suffered a series of personal and professional setbacks recently. Aside from Tuesday’s arrest, the 30-year-old is in the midst of a very public divorce from husband Jordan Bratman. Last month, the pop singer tripped on the Grammy stage following an all-star tribute to Aretha Franklin, and that was just days after she flubbed the words to the national anthem during the Super Bowl . So word of her signing on to “The Voice,” which premieres on April 26 on NBC, is probably welcome good news for Aguilera. Series creator and go-to reality producer Mark Burnett (“Survivor,” “The Apprentice”) said he always had his sights set on the “Burlesque” star. “When I decided to produce ‘The Voice,’ I immediately knew that my first choice for a female coach had to be Christina Aguilera,” Burnett said in the statement, adding, “Christina has a perfect voice and is an undeniable force in the music business. She is the epitome of ‘The Voice’.” Will you tune in for “The Voice” now that Christina Aguilera has signed on to be a judge? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Snoop Explains Why ‘Dogg’-Lovers Span Generations

‘I don’t think of it as reinventing myself, ’cause it’s all within me,’ the ‘Wet’ rapper tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News Snoop Dogg has continued to reinvent himself throughout his career, from a fresh-faced spitter to his current role as a hip-hop elder statesman. And he’s clearly embracing his position. It’s evident in how he’s reached across the generational aisle to befriend upstart Wiz Khalifa . Snoop’s current single, “Wet,” is a transformation, of sorts, for the Southern California rapper — it sounds more like an offering from Usher than Tha Doggfather — but he said the many “faces” of Snoop allow him to establish roots in more than one home. “I don’t really think of it as reinventing myself, ’cause it’s all within me,” Snoop told MTV News. “It’s all who I am. It’s more or less, faces of Snoop Dogg or characters of Snoop Dogg that’s in this one spirit. But at the same time, he’s able to embellish different parts of the character to create this look, that style, that sound. But it’s all the same. Because when I do it all at once, when I do a concept that has all the songs, I don’t have enough time to change and act like this; it’s still me.” As his career has progressed, Snoop said he’s noticed the effect songs that span his catalog have on audiences. “Gin and Juice,” he said, strikes his older fans how an Al Green song gets to him, while the younger set appreciates a song like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” much more. “I have different songs for different generations and different genres,” he said. “It doesn’t bother me that I’m growing old, that the fans are growing old and my music is growing old, ’cause that’s the whole purpose of doing it, is to grow old and let your music be here when you’re gone.” What’s your favorite Snoop Dogg track? Gwyneth Paltrow, Florence Welch, Mandy Moore Sing Oscars Score

Randy Newman nabs Best Original Song for ‘We Belong Together’ from ‘Toy Story 3.’ By Aly Semigran Gwyneth Paltrow performs at the 2011 Oscars on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Sunday night (February 27) marked the 83rd annual Academy Awards, but there were some moments when the ceremony was more reminiscent of a Grammy stage. Gwyneth Paltrow, who has gone from Oscar-winning actress to singing awards-show mainstay — having performed “Forget You” alongside Cee Lo Green and puppets at the Grammys — was one of the featured performers in the Best Original Song category. Paltrow, who joked to MTV News on the red carpet that she’d calmed her pre-Oscar nerves with a beer, called the ceremony “so, like, freaking serious” as compared to her previous stints on both the Grammys and the Country Music Awards. After being introduced by Jennifer Hudson, a calmer Paltrow (who Hudson described as “a singing sensation and country music’s new star”) donning a sleek, off-the-shoulder nude and bejeweled gown, sang some of “Coming Home” for the Kodak Theater and millions of Oscar viewers around the globe. With a starry stage set-up behind her, Paltrow crooned the chorus, “After all of my running/ I’m finally coming home/ The world tried to break me/ I found a road to take me home.” But Paltrow wasn’t the only familiar face to appear as a performer during the ceremony. Fellow singer/actress Mandy Moore, wearing a flowing blue gown, sang the nominated “I See the Light” from her hit animated film “Tangled” alongside her co-star Zachary Levi, with Alan Menken accompanying them on piano. Later in the telecast, Florence Welch, frontwoman for 2010 breakout act Florence and the Machine, helped Oscar winner A.R. Rahman perform “If I Rise” from “127 Hours” while images from the Best Picture nominee appeared in the background. Welch, who wore a striking burnt-sienna gown, showcased her beautiful, moody voice as she stepped in for Dido (who co-wrote the song, as well as sang on the film’s original track). However, those were the only moments those songs and their performers had any Oscar glory on Sunday, as perennial nominee Randy Newman walked away the winner in the Best Original Song category. Newman, who had performed “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3” at the piano on the Oscar stage, won his second career Academy Award, besting the songs from “Country Strong,” “Tangled” and “127 Hours.” Stick with MTV News on Oscar night and beyond for red-carpet fashion coverage, analysis of the winners, plus interviews, photos and more from your favorite Hollywood stars!
