Exclusive: Nas Talks Lost Tapes: Vol. 2

Esco says he’s focused on ‘owning the streets again’ and reveals to MTV News that hotly anticipated sequel is due December 14. By Shaheem Reid Nas Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images Esco, let’s go. Nas isn’t the most prolific on Twitter, but he sent out a big blast on Wednesday (September 15), leaving a message all of his fans will love. “It’s coming… LOST TAPES VOLUME TWO!!!” Nas posted on his page @nas . The Queens native is finally following up his 2002 classic compilation, The Lost Tapes. That record was a potent mix of his tracks left on the cutting-room floor over the years. On Wednesday afternoon, MTV News got word from Nas’ camp that The Lost Tapes: Vol. 2 will be released on December 14. Speaking to us exclusively, Nas revealed he was feeling inspired these days and the Lost Tapes sequel is just a small taste of what’s to come. He’s about to hit the blocks with a barrage. “I’m unloading records I want the streets to hear,” the Queens rapper said in an e-mail. “Cleaning out my hard drives. Gonna do this, then start fresh. I’m dropping my solo LP before the summer of 2011. I love the energy the world has been giving me over the last two years. But now it’s time to focus on owning the streets again.” Just earlier this month, Nas and DJ Green Lantern put out “Last Real N—a Alive, Part 2” for the mixtapes. The vocals from that record were recorded back when Nas was making his last album, Untitled. “Cars with police radars/ On highways bopping/ Bullpen therapy/ Cell-block dodging/ Pissy stairways,” he raps. “Miss them days, not when/ They shut down stores when I’m shopping,” Nas raps over the trumpet-laden track. “Used to be pop-locking, train-hopping/ Face covered in stocking/ Six-pack Bud-drinking gambler/ F— them cameras/ In front of the man, sing the hustla’s mantra/ Hands are luck/ More hits than Gamble and Huff.” “[Nasty Nas] never left,” Nas told MTV News when the verse leaked. “I recorded the song in my hometown of New York City. I was feeling the vibe of the streets and sewers, [which] helped me get in that zone” Since the legendary MC first promised to deliver out new material, he has been back in the lab and talking to Wu-Tang Clan’s the RZA about producing tracks “Escobar is one of the best MCs to ever bless the mic,” RZA said about Nas on the VMA white carpet on Sunday. “We’re still trying to figure our schedule out. We both got a lot of big life ahead of us. But we’re getting in. We’re gonna make that classic. You know what it is. Last time, Nas did a verse for me that was on ‘Verbal Intercourse.’ That was a classic. To get back in and make another classic like that would be real good.” Are you excited for Nas’ Lost Tapes sequel? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Nas RZA

Former CNBC Reporter: GE CEO Immelt Meddled in Network’s Editorial Coverage

This could confirm what many suspected all along – the corporate heads at General Electric (NYSE: GE ) would try to use their media holdings to portray President Barack Obama and his administration in a positive light in order to gain a corporate advantage. That’s how former CNBC reporter and current Fox Business Network senior correspondent Charlie Gasparino explains it in his forthcoming book, “Bought and Paid For: The Unholy Alliance Between Barack Obama and Wall Street.” According to Gasparino, GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt had “helped his company feast off of the subsidies of Obamanomics,” including the green energy initiatives and health care reform. And although Immelt is a registered Republican, Gasparino detailed how Immelt would walk around his company’s headquarters saying “we’re all Democrats” now at the prospect of government checks going to GE. But later, Gasparino explained how Immelt would use his authority to manipulate the editorial coverage of on Obama for that reason: Immelt touted his status as a registered Republican when he stated publicly and infamously among his Republican friends his support of the president, saying, “We are all Democrats now.” His friends tell me that the reasons Immelt supported Obama came down to the fact that he liked the president on a personal level and believed he was the moderate that he sold himself as on the campaign trail. At CNBC, where I worked for several years, Immelt called a meeting of top talent to discuss coverage of Obama’s economic agenda and whether the heavy criticism by on-air commentators (like me) was fair to the president. Those sentiments are similar to ones Gasparino relayed to host Bill O’Reilly on the Aug. 10 broadcast of Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor” . “There was this issue where Jeff Immelt, chairman of GE, which used to own NBC Universal, called in some of the senior staff, and clearly was worried, according to the people I spoke to who were in that meeting, about the possibility that we were becoming too anti-administration,” Gasparino said. “This is when the Obama administration first took over … They will deny it, but from what I understand, people got called into this meeting and they were basically, not exactly read the riot act, but the question of whether they were being fair to the president was brought up.” However, Gasparino went on to say that Immelt regretted this pro-Obama stance by mid-2010. He complained abroad, calling Obama’s policies “overregulation” of the economy. And in the end the potential upside wasn’t enough. “Why the change of heart? GE may have benefited from a few government handouts, but with the economy weak, the conglomerate’s many businesses reflect the Obama-induced economic malaise caused by putting ideology, in the form of socializing health care and imposing higher taxes on entrepreneurs, before the economic well-being of the American people.” “Bought and Paid For: The Unholy Alliance Between Barack Obama and Wall Street” will be available on Oct. 5.

Eminem, Other Performers Find Fitting Home In VMA Set

Eye-popping design puts mid-century architecture ‘through the prism of 2010,’ says show’s executive producer. By James Montgomery The VMA stage during Usher’s rehearsal Photo: Ciel VanderVeen/MTV LOS ANGELES — Sure, stars like Lady Gaga, Eminem, Kanye West and Justin Bieber are getting top billing at the Video Music Awards. But all of that might change the minute the show goes live on Sunday (September 12), because there’s a much bigger star waiting to steal their thunder: the VMA set itself. Custom-made in New York and Los Angeles, assembled over the course of two (very long) weeks inside the Nokia Theatre and drawing inspiration from the sleek mid-century designs of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the set is a massive, all-encompassing thing, swooping and soaring (like, really high ) and practically swallowing up the entirety of the theatre itself. It’s so impressive, in fact, that you don’t have to be an architecture enthusiast to appreciate it. “Everyone who walks in and sees it is like, ‘Aaah!’ ” Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. ” Rick Ross came in and said, ‘It’s like Pandora.’ ” Without revealing too many details — mostly because details don’t really do it justice — the VMA set is a multi-tiered, multi-layered design that stretches more than 70 feet out into the theatre seats, and just as high in the air. There are portions made out of tightly stretched fabric, giving the set a living, organic feel. A giant panoramic video screen stretches behind the entirety of the thing. There are LED lights everywhere . And, of course, there’s . Yeah, it’s a pretty big deal. “What we wanted to do is to use this black box — which is what the Nokia is — in a kind of different way. We tried to create a more intimate space, and that’s one of the reason why we created a kind of center stage and brought it much closer to the audience,” production designer Florian Wieder said. “What I tried to do was create a kind of three-dimensional space, where the entire space is part of the show. We use it all … the whole ceiling, the floor, the walls. It’s really an impressive thing.” And while the design is based on the sort of classic mid-century architecture that defines Los Angeles, the set, much like the show itself, is far from stodgy. Quite the opposite, in fact. “It’s based on mid-century architecture, only put through the prism of 2010,” Sirulnick said. “It’s classic design that reaches through the eras, just like the music itself.” Like we said … you have to see this thing. Sure, Gaga and all the stars are great, but the set is really something too. Tune in and see for yourself. Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. 30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals

Can this year’s nominees rival the elephants and yachts of years past? By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: Myriam Santos/ Kayda For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals. From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy. “Usually, artists don’t let us know [how they’re arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting,” Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. “A lot of times, they’ll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them ‘no.’ ” Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they’re just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year’s VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they’re slightly scaled back. “In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn’t play this year,” Kroft said. “The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place.” But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars , who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy. “30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their ‘Kings and Queens’ video ,” Kroft explained. “They’ll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they’ll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video.” Going equally big is Ke$ha , who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don’t want to give it all away, but here’s what we can reveal: “Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can’t talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself,” Kroft said. “It’ll be like ‘Back to the Future.’ ” And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven’t said how they’re going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something “big and sexy,” Soulja Boy Tell’em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there’s Lady Gaga, who … well, you never know what she’ll do. “We still don’t know what some people are doing,” Kroft laughed. “The only way you’ll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Chris Brown Joins N.E.R.D. For Fashion’s Night Out Show

Singer pop-locks during the band’s outdoor NYC performance. By Mawuse Ziegbe Chris Brown and Pharrell Williams (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images New York’s Fashion’s Night Out celebrations Friday night promised a city-wide extravaganza of major style and star power. Judging by N.E.R.D.’s outdoor performance, the evening did not disappoint. A crowd of the band’s fans and fashion revelers swarmed the West Broadway flagship of the Billionaire Boys Club brand, which is owned by N.E.R.D. frontman Pharrell Williams. Flanked by a live band and a few amped-up dancers, the crew ripped through high-energy jams to a sea of New Yorkers wielding cameraphones. Sporting an army green Billionaire Boys Club jacket and green cap, Williams rocked their latest single “Party People,” as Brown, also sporting a green shirt and shorts with a military vibe, busted out some impromptu pop-locking. The ban also tore through their saucy debut single “Lapdance.” Singer and producer Ryan Leslie, and Japanese designer and Williams cohort Nigo also stopped by the event. Earlier this year in a sit-down with MTV News, Williams broke down the energy fans can expect at their live shows. “Get your stretches in — the EMTs are always on the side, because people pull muscles and stuff. And not bragging at all, I’m just telling you, dude — fat, black, white, skinny, gay, straight, I don’t know how they treat you elsewhere at their shows, I don’t know how they treat you in streets, [but] I know how you feel when you’re going to leave that N.E.R.D show,” Williams said. “And trust me, when they ask you what it was like, and could you describe it, could you ever put it into words — you’re going to say, ‘Nothing.’ ” Did you go to any Fashion’s Night Out events?
