VMA Winners David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Others Became High-Profile Directors

Jonze went from directing Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” video to an Oscar nomination for “Being John Malkovich.” By Eric Ditzian David Fincher Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Somewhere between directing Will Smith and then Robert Pattinson on the big screen, Francis Lawrence took some time away from Hollywood to helm Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video. Before Dave Meyers stepped into Pink’s “Funhouse” video, he led Sophia Bush through the bloody terror of “The Hitcher.” There’s long been a connection between feature-length movies and music videos, and Lawrence and Meyers — both of whom are nominated for Best Direction at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — are just two of the folks who have worked in both mediums. Perhaps in the future, we might see Hype Williams, another of this year’s nominees, traveling from Jay-Z’s New York-centric “Empire State of Mind” to Tinseltown. Before the show goes live on Sunday, September 12, and we see which helmer triumphs, let’s take a look back at some of the most successful Hollywood directors who have won Best Direction at the MTV Video Music Awards. David Fincher Almost two decades before Fincher nabbed an Oscar nod for directing “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” he won the VMA directing award for Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” The next year he won again — this time for Madge’s “Vogue” — becoming the only director in MTV history to win Best Direction two years in a row. After collaborating with the Queen of Pop, Fincher went on to make his feature-film debut with “Alien 3” and then establish his own dark identity with the Brad Pitt-starring “Se7en.” His “Social Network,” a film about the founding of Facebook, is one of the fall’s most anticipated releases. Spike Jonze “Buddy Holly” begat “John Malkovich.” Jonze won his first Best Direction VMA for Weezer’s iconic “Happy Days”-inspired “Buddy Holly” video in 1995, then made his feature debut a few years later with the trippy “Being John Malkovich,” for which he received an Oscar nomination. Jonze has gone on to direct “Adaptation” and “Where the Wild Things Are,” which grossed over $100 million last year. Marc Webb Webb is the man whose job it is to rescue Spider-Man . Following the collapse of the Tobey Maguire-starring franchise earlier this year, Sony turned to Webb to reboot the boy wonder series. Last year, Green Day turned to the director to helm “21 Guns,” a somber take on their hard-charging tune. His feature debut, “(500) Days of Summer,” was nominated for two Golden Globes, including a Best Actor nod for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Mark Romanek Romanek has directed videos for everyone from David Bowie to Janet Jackson, earning himself MTV’s Video Vanguard Award in 1997. Then in 2004, thanks to Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” Romanek won his first Best Direction VMA. By then he’d already directed Robin Williams in the thriller “One Hour Photo.” His latest, “Never Let Me Go,” an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s creepily elegant novel, starring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last week. Jake Scott The images of sullen drivers stuck in an endless traffic jam set to the mournful sounds of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” are among the most indelible of ’90s-era music videos. Scott is the guy behind that vid, for which he won Best Direction. He’s also the guy behind Kristen Stewart’s upcoming drama “Welcome to the Rileys,” a troubling take on a runaway-turned-New Orleans stripper. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris There hardly seems to be a connection between the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 3-D gaming-style video for “Californication” and the Steve Carell-starring dark comedy “Little Miss Sunshine” … except that Dayton and Faris directed them both. The video won them Best Direction in 2000 and the movie was honored with four Oscar nominations in 2007, winning Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin. Samuel Bayer Bayer will forever be part of music history for directing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video. But he didn’t win his first Best Direction VMA until 2005, when he helmed Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” He won his second direction Moonman two year later, thanks to Justin Timberlake and “What Goes Around.” This past spring, he resurrected the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, guiding the horror flick to an impressive $32.9 million opening. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Bruno Mars Says ‘Words Cannot Express’ His Excitement For VMAs

‘It’s so surreal,’ the singer/producer says of performing and being nominated for Sunday’s show. By Peter de Saint Phalle, with reporting by Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News It’s no secret that this has been a big summer for Bruno Mars . Whether he’s producing profanity-laced records with Cee-Lo Green , collaborating with B.o.B and Travie McCoy or touring to promote his debut EP It’s Better If You Don’t Understand and upcoming LP, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, this producer-turned-rock/soul singer is popping up everywhere. This week alone, Mars is hitting our screens with the premiere of his “Just the Way You Are” video and with a performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. “It’s all happening so fast,” Mars told MTV News last month, when reflecting on his successes in the past months. His collaboration with B.o.B, “Nothin’ on You,” is also up for Best Pop Video at the show, which airs live on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. “It’s so surreal,” he said. “I grew up watching the VMAs and seeing everyone doing their thing on it.” The singer, who’s also one third of the production trio the Smeezingtons, said he actually found out he’d be performing at the show before he heard he’d been nominated. “It’s kinda like the biggest stage of our generation, so to be nominated AND get to perform … words cannot express.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Gates Foundation and Cargill paper to force soy monoculture into Africa

“The SOYA MODEL implies a war against the population, the emptying of the countryside, and the elimination of our collective memory in order to shoehorn people into towns and convert them into faithful consumers of whatever the market provides. The impacts of this model go beyond the borders of the new Soya Republics. The dehumanisation of agriculture and the depopulation of rural areas for the benefit of the corporations is increasing in the North and in the South.” – Javiera Ruli in United Soya Republics. The Truth about Soya Production in Latin America Read the Press Release here… http://www.biosafetyafrica.net/index.html/index.php/20100901329/The-Gates-Founda… The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a new project to develop the soya value chain in Africa in partnership with American NGO, TechnoServe and agricultural commodity trading giant Cargill. The US$8 million project will be implemented as a four year pilot in Mozambique and Zambia with the intention of spreading the model to other regions in the future. The Gates Foundation continues to back agricultural strategies that open new markets for strong corporate interests while assisting in the creation of policy environments to support foreign agribusiness’ interests. The programme will yoke African farmers into the soya value chain and open the door for major agribusiness players such as Cargill, while displacing African agricultural practices and traditional crops. In addition, there is a very real threat that this project could be a foot in the door for the introduction of genetically modified soya onto the Continent. Since the green revolution of the 1960s, the soya bean has become the number one forage crop on the international market. About 85% of the world’s soybeans are processed into soya bean meal and oil, about 98% of that meal is further processed into animal feed, the balance is used to make soya flour and proteins. Approximately 95% of the oil is consumed as edible oil with the rest being used for industrial products such as fatty acids, soaps and agrofuel. In the last 40 years, production of soya bean has increased by over 500%, driven by the growing affluence of Chinese consumers, who are now eating more meat than ever before, as well as a significant increase in demand for soya beans as feedstock for biodiesel. In addition, soya beans fix nitrogen in the soil, thereby improving soil fertility and making it an excellent rotation crop. The United States, Argentina and Brazil are the three major producers of soya in the world. The aggressive expansion of soya monocrops in Latin America has wreaked socio-economic and environmental disaster – in 2008 over 30 million hectares of soya was grown in Brazil and Argentina, where soya monocrops are notorious for displacing rural populations and causing mass deforestation. In April 2006, Greenpeace announced that in the 2004/2005 growing season, 1.2 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest was deforested as a consequence of soya expansion. The vast majority of global soya crops are genetically modified to withstand applications of herbicides. (Approximately 93% of soya production in the USA is GM, 98.9% in Argentina and 70.7% in Brazil). The introduction of herbicide tolerant soya has created a sharp increase in the use of highly toxic herbicides – in the USA the use of herbicides has increased by 382.6 million pounds over the past 13 years, with herbicide tolerant soya beans accounting for 92% of that increase. No multinational on the planet has greater interests in soya production and trade than the American corporation Cargill. Cargill’s business operations include purchasing, processing and distributing grain and agricultural commodities, the manufacture and sale of livestock feed and ingredients for processed foods and pharmaceuticals. Their assets and business operations in Latin America are staggering; it is responsible for over 75% of Argentina’s grain and oilseed production. It also has great interest in fertiliser production, having a two-thirds stake in one of the world’s leading fertiliser companies, Mosaic. Their business interests in Africa are scant in contrast. It has now partnered with the Gates Foundation to introduce a soya value chain in Africa. cont. added by: JanforGore

On This Labor Day, Demand Safe Green Jobs, And Honor Those Who Work With Their Hands

There is a price to pay for cheap energy and gas for our cars that goes beyond dollars, as we saw this year with the 29 dead miners in West Virginia and the 11 on the Deepwater Horizon platform in the Gulf. American labor used to make things and fix things, and used to be proud to do it, for a decent wage. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Boston Globe Sees ‘Global Warming Double Punch’ Worsening Hurricane Earl in Massachusetts — Whoops

The Boston Globe, long notorious as promoters of global warming doom and gloom — see Ross Gelbspan, for example — sometimes get embarrassed by the actual climate. On “The Green Blog,” the Globe’s Beth Daley projected that a “global warming double punch” could make Hurricane Earl much worse for Massachusetts — except when it actually passed by, it turned out to be a dud for Bostonians and it could be watched on the coast with a glass of wine:   The large waves, storm surge, and flooding that Hurricane Earl will spawn as it strikes Massachusetts tomorrow night comes with an added dollop of trouble; Sea level rise. Very gradual — and in some cases accelerating — rises in sea level off our coast over the last century will boost the height of Earl’s storm surge — expected to be one to four feet — meaning the wall of water will be able to travel that much farther inland and over higher elevations to flood basements, streets, and other low-lying areas…. Sea level is rising, scientists say, in large part because of a global warming double punch: higher ocean temperatures that expand the volume of water, and melting glaciers that add water to the sea. So future hurricanes are likely to cause more widespread flooding. “Sea level rise is fairly insidious and one of those things that we think is in the background and not in our lifetime or our children’s lifetime but it keeps adding up,” said Greg Berman, coastal processes specialist with Woods Hole Sea Grant and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension. He said sea level rise in the last century has coincided with the mass migration of people to live near the coast, and while “we drew a line in the sand where the sea should stop, it’s not listening to us.” While the downgraded tropical storm Earl caused some coastal drama, the storm wasn’t dramatic enough in  Boston, according to the Globe : Away from the Cape and Islands, the storm was decidedly less dramatic. In South Boston, Carson Beach was largely deserted late last night, except for three young women who decided to go swimming under a light but steady rain. “You get a hurricane like every 20 years,’’ said Amy McCarthy 23, of Dorchester. “So why not check it out?’’ Her friend, Rebekah Lehtonen, 23, of Connecticut, was unimpressed. “I wish it was a little bit more windy,’’ Lehtonen said. The storm was apparently calm enough that you watched it on the beach with a glass of wine: But as it became clear that the storm would be more like a nor’easter than a hurricane, many people ignored warnings and flocked to beaches to watch Earl arrive. At a beach in Oak Bluffs, as the wind picked up and waves swelled yesterday evening, Jane and Steve Edmonds of Sharon sipped shiraz, their backs to the churning sea. Suddenly, a wave sprayed Jane Edmonds, causing her to shriek. “I’m not moving! I’m not moving!’’ she said defiantly, covering her glass with her hand. Near the water, Irene Sherman and her husband, Marc Littlejohn, stood with their children, Maya, 13 and Zach, 10. Marc Littlejohn had heard the warnings that people shouldn’t watch the storm from the beach, but the prospect of seeing it up close was too enticing. “We couldn’t help ourselves,’’ Littlejohn said. “It’s pretty amazing.’’ Still, the family agreed, they were happy the storm was not as intense as what was forecast. “We don’t want a natural disaster,’’ Maya said. A news media eager to go looking for the peril of global warming in every tropical storm are going to occasionally end up with a little salty surf in their shiraz. But are they humble enough to admit when they’ve overdone it?

Eminem, Jay-Z Fans Travel Across U.S. For Detroit Concert

‘You’ll never see anything like it again,’ one fan says of hip-hop legends’ joint show. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Eminem and Jay-Z (file) Photo: Getty Images Very rarely do two hip-hop titans of Eminem and Jay-Z’s caliber team up to mount a series of stadium shows for their legions of rabid fans. Still, it’s astonishing to see the lengths that Shady and Hov heads would go to see the pair onstage. Their fans crisscrossed the country to see the duo light up the stage at Comerica Park in Em’s hometown of Detroit. The Thursday (September 2) event is the first stop on the duo’s Home and Home Tour and their followers showed major support; braving a possible downpour and donning Jay and Em memorabilia. “We’re all psyched,” said one fan who had rolled to the concert with three other homies. “How many times do you get to see Eminem play in his [hometown of] Detroit?” The fan, sporting a Jigga/Eminem T-shirt, added that the outing was really special because it was the first live show he’d attended. “The fact that it’s Eminem and Jay-Z just helps a lot.” Kipper revealed that he and his buddy J.T. traveled from Green Bay, Wisconsin, to take in the show. “I … came down to [see] something different, something big. This is the biggest concert of the year,” he marveled. “You’ll never see anything like it again.” Two of the rappers’ most dedicated fans not only crossed state lines to catch the Comerica show but even employed their passports, trekking from Ottawa, Canada, for the collabo show. “I really hope Eminem plays ‘Going Through Changes’ [from Recovery ]. I really like that song,” said Karen who, along with her friend, had fashioned homemade tees emblazoned with lyrics from The Eminem Show ‘s “Superman” and two Jay-Z’s smashes, “Run This Town” and “99 Problems.” Another fan, Jay, who traveled from Pittsburgh, was happy that Em was giving back to his hometown in the form of a major musical event. “He should show the love from where he came from. They helped him to get where he’s at. The least [he] could do is put on a big-bang show for ’em [and] show some respect,” he said. He added that he was checking out the show to see some of the game’s most talented MCs show their skills. “I mean, the best two lyricists to ever do it [are performing]. So, I’m trying to come and get some knowledge real quick.” Not even bad weather could stop fans from seeing the Grammy-winning legends hit the stage. “I’m just so pumped to see it,” “D” said. “I’ll see it in the rain, I don’t care.” One concertgoer, who donned a tank top that read “#1 Fan,” had a personal message for Shady: “Eminem if you ever see this, my name is Lindsay and I go to Michigan State and you should totally call me.” Are you going to see Jay-Z and Eminem in concert? Cee-Lo Drops Official "F— You" Video

New retro clip replaces previous placeholder video. By Gil Kaufman Cee Lo in his “F— You” video Photo: Arista You were surely charmed by the low-tech, bold-font viral video that helped launched Cee-Lo’s f-bomb-dropping smash single, “F— You.” But after demand for the undeniably catchy throwback kiss-off song spiked over the past week, Cee-Lo quickly got on the stick and recorded an official video for the tune (warning: strong language). It kicks off with a graffiti-style rendering of the title over a neon sign, topped with a woman in a polka-dot dress raining bills down from a stack of cash. In keeping with the Motown vibe of the song, the video’s setting is of an old-school diner, with a trio of arm-waving, shimmying backup singers in shiny green dresses kicking off the action. Then a youngster identified as “Young Cee-Lo Green” marches into the greasy spoon with his parents, pumping his arm, and calls out the signature four-letter chorus slam. The camera pans to a trio of fellow tweens in a booth snaking along to the music, with one adorable girl identified as “the Heartbreaker.” The real Cee-Lo, wearing a black suit with a white and black checkered tie and shades pops up to sing a bit. Waving around a toy garbage truck, the young lothario tries to impress his target, but she clearly has the “Ferrari” of the lyrics in mind over his junk hauler. With the diner cleared out that night, Cee-Lo is revealed to be wearing a snazzy black suit with a long coat as the backup singers take their place on the counter in elegant white gowns with matching feather boas. Young Cee soon finds out what he’s up against when he approaches the table and sees that his rival is dressed in a sharp suit and has, yes, a toy Ferrari that puts Cee’s garbage rig to shame. The backup singers then pop up behind the Heartbreaker to snap about how she’s a grade-school gold digger. The scenario flashes forward to the “High School Years,” and our luckless lover is now a dishwasher at the diner, still crooning the song’s lyrics and dancing over to the object of his affection with some flowers. But a bespectacled kid in a Mohawk thwarts him by dropping a basket of greasy fries on which CL slips, landing his floral gift in the lap of a nerdy, unintended female target. By the time he’s in college, the lothario, Cee-Lo dressed in red specs and a checkered jacket, is still trying to work his girl by huddling with his now foxy nerd girl and working on his musical charms (which include a keyboard and a music theory book). But the Heartbreaker seems unimpressed when he sends over a plate with a hot dog and a heart-shaped arrangement of ketchup. She makes her feelings clear by smashing a basket of greasy fries on his shirt as the scene explodes into a montage reminiscent of the opening to the classic ’70s sitcom “Good Times.” Cee-Lo gets his revenge in the end, though, when he turns into “the Ladykiller,” rolling up in his vintage ride as everyone dances to his music while his grade-school love is stuck sweeping up at the diner. Ain’t that a … well, you know. What do you think of Cee-Lo’s official “F— You” video? Let us know in comments below. Related Artists Cee-Lo
