‘One Tree Hill’ Star Robert Buckley Celebrates Renewal News

The CW waited until Tuesday to tell the drama’s stars they’d been renewed for season eight. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Buckley Photo: MTV News “One Tree Hill” is the CW’s version of the little engine that could. Every time it looks like the show is about to get canceled, its dedicated and vocal fanbase come to the rescue, demanding another season. Star Robert Buckley (Clay) told MTV News on the green carpet at the CW upfronts on Thursday (May 20) that he didn’t get the news of their renewal for season eight until this week. “Oh my God! We got picked up. Woo!” he exclaimed, kidding that he just found out on the carpet. “No, I found out on Tuesday morning-ish, and I found out from an Internet website. Just goes to show you the power of the press.” Earlier this week, Buckley stopped by the MTV Newsroom and revealed that he didn’t believe that Monday night’s episode would be the series finale, even though he still wasn’t sure. “It was funny. I did an interview on Monday, before I went to MTV, and they said, ‘Congrats on your pickup!’ And so, yeah, I found out Tuesday, [even though] Monday people were telling me we were picked up and we weren’t.” Despite the kind words from fans and the press on Monday, Buckley didn’t want to jinx anything before he got the official word that they’d be back for more drama. “We were about to go into the interview, and I was like, ‘You need to not say were picked up because were not,’ ” he said. “And how awkward would that be?” The eighth season of “One Tree Hill” will air on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET this fall, followed by the new drama “Nikita,” starring Maggie Q. Are you excited that “One Tree Hill” will be back for more action next season? Tell us in the comments!

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 4’ To Shoot In 3-D

Johnny Depp’s fourth open-water adventure, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,’ will be shot in Disney Digital 3D. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” Photo: Disney Captain Jack Sparrow might have to learn a new seafaring ditty that goes a little something like, “Yo-ho-ho, a bottle of rum and a pair of your finest 3-D glasses.” Yes, Johnny Depp’s fourth open-water adventure, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” will be shot in Disney Digital 3-D, the studio has announced. That brings the total number of 3-D releases in the next two years to, oh, approximately 6,000 (not really, though it certainly feels that way). The noteworthy development for “Pirates,” then, is not that it will hit theaters as a 3-D movie but that it will be shot in three-dimensions rather than converted during post-production. The 3-D conversion process has become one of the more controversial trends in Hollywood. Converted films, like “Alice in Wonderland” or “Clash of the Titans,” can have a sort of pop-up picture book effect that is more jarring than it is an effective visual and storytelling addition. That hasn’t stopped other big-budget films shot with 2-D cameras from jumping on the 3-D conversion bandwagon and the premium ticket prices that can be sold as a result. Upcoming converted films include “Piranha 3-D,” “The Last Airbender,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and “The Green Hornet.” And then there are the movies shot — or soon to shoot — in 3-D, despite some of the inconveniences that come with such productions (such as the heavier, less maneuverable cameras): “Drive Angry,” “Tron Legacy” and “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” That “Pirates” has decided to film with 3-D cameras lends credence to the idea that such cameras will become the norm in Hollywood, rather than the contentious conversion process. In light of the “Pirates” move, it will be interesting to see what other blockbuster franchises such as “Spider-Man,” “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers” choose to do. Will the minds behind these films decide that a true 3-D experience can only be created via 3-D cameras? Or, at least for now, will conversions continue to a popular creative choice? “I think the answer is that, as with most movies, you’re going to do some kind of combination if you end up doing it,” “Transformers” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told MTV News last month. “I’m sure 3-D cameras are going to get lighter and more manageable and all the things that get in the way right now. Over time, that may change. But I think in the near and medium term, most movies will do a combination when and if they do it.” What do you think of “Pirates” going 3-D, and the 3-D movie trend? 3OH!3 Risked Mono, Braved Chatroulette For ‘My First Kiss’ Video

The duo were ‘really dedicated to making this video,’ Sean Foreman says of on-set kissing. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Saimon Kos 3OH!3’s Nathaniel Motte and Sean Foreman Photo: Cristina Ramos/ MTV News Earlier this week, we got the guys in 3Oh!3 to explain the basic premise behind their tonsil-hockey-heavy video for “My First Kiss.” It sounded like a pretty sweet deal — just randomly smooching a bunch of very pretty strangers — but, as is the case with a lot of good things, there was a downside. “Honestly, there is a lot of kissing, there’s a lot of lips. I think we all have mono after today, so we’re all going to get tested. We probably should’ve been tested before,” 3OH!3’s Sean Foreman told MTV News on the set of the “Kiss” video. “It’s been really fun. We’re actually dealing with a lot of visual concepts and making a video that attacks the senses in all ways. Kind of like a kiss. … See? [I] tied it all in right there.” Although filming the video was taxing, Foreman and his partner in crime, Nat Motte, actually had a blast making it: screwing around with the green screen (plenty of riffs on the “We’re in … Delaware” routine from “Wayne’s World”) and trying very hard to make all the kissing as real as possible, even if that meant burning the midnight oil. “We’re working as hard as we can. Who knows how long it will go?” Foreman laughed. “We’re really dedicated to making this video.” That dedication extended to the casting process. As Foreman put it, the band “flew in some of the best lips in the world” for the video, but that was only after a rather exhaustive pre-production process, one that could have resulted in a very different kind of clip. “We went on the Chatroulette and found the best lips,” Foreman joked. “We didn’t find a lot of lips at first, but eventually. … The video almost ended up being completely different, but I’m glad we finally got the lips.” “We found a lot of something else,” Motte added. “We probably only could’ve run [that version of the] video online.” Are you looking forward to seeing how the “My First Kiss” video turned out? Terrible Shrek-Themed Weddings are Coincidentally Happening Again, Right Now

NOOO, it has begun anew! You may remember how taunted we felt last year when, in a burst of total coincidence that came just as the Broadway musical Shrek just happened to be struggling, a whole bunch of people dressed up as the green ogre in public, including Regis Philbin and some wackadoos getting married across the Atlantic. Now, it is happening again. And I think we need to take a closer look.

Ridley Scott Didn’t Treat Robin Hood Like A ‘Myth’

‘I really believe he existed,’ director says of Russell Crowe’s character. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Todd Gilchrist Ridley Scott Photo: MTV News Between Monty Python’s send-up, Kevin Costner’s heartthrob-centric take and Mel Brooks’ farce, the mythic character of Robin Hood hasn’t fared very well in pop culture these last few decades. Ridley Scott isn’t a fan of such depictions either, which is why he was dead-set on reinventing the character for a 21st-century audience in his upcoming “Robin Hood.” “I never liked the green tights,” he told MTV News. “I didn’t like the feather in the hat. It didn’t work for me. Even as a kid, it was not my idea of Robin Hood.” His of idea of Robin Hood, rather, has more in common with the main character of “Gladiator,” a sharp-witted, tough-minded badass who knows how to handle his weaponry. No surprise there, as Scott directed that Oscar-winning flick and recruited star Russell Crowe to play the title role in “Robin Hood” (out Friday). They both knew exactly the approach they wanted to take, and it had nothing to do with Costner’s 1991 version of the folkloric hero. “Kevin Costner’s was fun, leaning more heavily on the clowning of Robin Hood,” Scott explained. “On this one, I wanted to go more real, because I really believe he existed. The ones to date always treated Robin Hood like a myth, part of a fairy story.” Scott and his screenwriters sought to ground the story in verifiable history, choosing to spin a plotline that began in the late 12th century and then proceeded through a time when the English kingdom was bankrupt and reeling from the reign of a king who became known as Bad King John. Once they plopped Robin Hood into the center of social and economic upheaval, the story gained an air of truthfulness and gravity missing from other imaginings of the character. It also gained an Oscar-winning actor as its lead. “I just wouldn’t have done it if it were a conventional take,” Crowe told us. “There’s no need for anyone in the world to see that series of clich

Living Downstream links environment and cancer

There was once a village along a river. The people who lived there were very kind. These residents, according to parable, began noticing increasing numbers of drowning people caught in the river’s swift current. And so they went to work devising ever more elaborate technologies to resuscitate them. So preoccupied were these heroic villagers with rescue and treatment that they never thought to look upstreams to see who was pushing the victims in. Living Upstream is a walk up that river. Author, environmentalist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., was raised in a family that seemed prone to cancer. She was diagnosed with bladder cancer at age 20. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when Steingraber was in high school. Her aunt died of the same form of cancer that Sandra had, and many of ther close family members also struggled with the disease. But there is no question that cancer does not run in Steingraber’s genes—she was adopted. Clearly, this family was struggling with toxic influences surrounding them in their daily lives. Living Downstream , first published in 1997, both tells the tale of Steingraber’s ongoing battle against cancer and her life’s work linking the effects of our toxic environment on cancer and our health. A documentary film adaptation of the book coincides with last month’s release of an updated edition of the book, tracking recent scientific revelations in the connection between a healthy environment and human health. Find a public screening of Living Downstream , the movie, or purchase a DVD at LivingDownstream.com , and follow Steingraber’s ongoing search for answers and journey of cleaning our environment of carcinogenic influences in Walking Upstream . ‘Kiss teamed up with DJs Drama and Green Lantern for this Mayweather-Mosley-themed mixtape — a Mixtape Daily special! By Shaheem Reid with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Jadakiss Photo: MTV News No matter what happens in the big Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. “Sugar” Shane Mosley bout on Saturday, it’ll have a hard time topping the excitement on the new Champ Is Here 3 mixtape by Jadakiss and DJs Drama and Green Lantern. ‘Kiss is already legendary, but the lines on this one are as immaculate as ever. “The game is all Jada’s/ Something hot drop, I get ’em in all flavors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals,” he spits. “He’s a di–, you a p—y, y’all neighbors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals/ MJ of the Pro-Tools, anti-social.” We don’t need to say much more than that! Our money is Money May and of course ‘Kiss. Shout to DJ Drama and Green Lantern who hosted this one on the tag team. It’s a “Gangsta Grillz Invasion.” This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : Jadakiss, Green Lantern and DJ Drama Holding It Down For : Legendary hip-hop Mixtape Album : The Champ Is Here 3 Real Spit : As promised, the biggest event in hip-hop right now is here: Jadakiss’ Gangsta Grillz Invasion, The Champ Is Here 3. ‘Kiss’ collabo with Green Lantern and DJ Drama has been strategically planned to drop on the same day that Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley are getting it on in the ring: tomorrow, May 1. This time around, though, Jada isn’t pushing an album (at press time he was only three or four songs deep into his next LP, Top Five, Dead or Alive ). “The regular formula for the first two was drop the mixtape right when I finished the album,” Jada added. “I just shifted it on you this time: Give you the mixtape then go finish the album. Let you compare it with the albums that’s coming out while I’m in the kitchen.” Kiss’ mixtapes have been so dope, he’s often found himself competing with himself. “That’s another reason why it’s good to drop it before, so I won’t have that problem,” Jada laughed. “It’ll just be creating pandemonium everywhere instead of competing with my own album. It might be better to do it this way. We gonna keep switching it around. We might do another one this way, but we gonna switch the pattern up so they can’t follow.” Guests on the tape include Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj — and that’s just to start it off. “We got some underground artists, some high-class artists, some of them good, down-bottom artists. It takes you all around. You definitely gonna rock out for Memorial Day, for the summer.” “There’s some surprises on this joint, even with just his features,” Lantern continued. “We never had features outside of the Lox. But we have some nice surprises.” Green and Jada have been rocking on this series since the start. They called Drama into the fold for the third. “I got the phone call one day. Green been in [Atlanta] recently, invading the airwaves, invading the city,” Drama told of his participation. “We been looking for a project to do for a couple years now. Green called and said, ‘We making the mixtape game exiting again. It’s fun. We’re moving around brands. What do you think about coming on board for this Champ Is Here 3 ? It made perfect sense. I been on my New York sh– heavy. Green is in the A, ‘Kiss being the legend he is — three very important and crucial brands in hip-hop. Stupid!” Joints To Check For : “Bang” “You know what I’m spitting already,” Jada laughed. “That’s self-explanatory. The content is just fight dialogue, workout dialogue, getting ready for the fight. What I’ll do to you before or after the fight.” “Here I Go” (featuring Yo Gotti) “Yo Gotti is poppin,” Jada said. “He’s been doing his thing for a while in the South. I feel he’s an underdog like me. He do his thing but he don’t get the props he should get. Those are the people I rock with the hardest. He don’t care, he knows what he’s doing despite what anybody might think. I respect him for that.” “It’s a problem man,” Dram concurs. “We wanted to give them something they wasn’t expecting and haven’t heard. The beat on ‘Here I Go,’ it felt right. Mystikal is home. We used his beat.” “Who Shot Ya?” “Rest in peace B.I.G. Big shout to Nasheem,” Kiss — who rapped over Biggie’s classic track, said. “You can’t really play with that. I took shots at y’all [the MTV Hip-Hop Brain Trust] on there … Not really, just getting y’all back. Big up to them [ “Hottest MCs in the Game” ] lists. I don’t let them lists discourage me because the people who make the list, the people who’s on the lists, [watch out for my] new album, Top Five, Dead or Alive. ” “Listen,” Green adds. “I heard it for the first time a couple of days ago. I had to stop for a minute. This is special. You just can’t go regular on that beat, so I just stopped. I had to take a minute and really concentrate on that one. He came off. He wrapped it up. Blood on the floor at the end of that one!” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
