Game Calls Gang Starr MC Guru ‘A Legend’

‘I felt the same way I felt when Jam Master Jay got murdered,’ MC says. By Steven Roberts Photo: Cary Hammond/ Redferns The hip-hop world is still reeling from the passing of legendary Gang Starr MC Guru (real name: Keith Elam), who died Monday at the age of 43 from cancer. Fans have reacted to his death with found memories of Guru’s work with DJ Premiere for Gang Starr and his Jazzmatazz series, and artists like Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj and Fabolous reached out via Twitter to share their condolences. When MTV News caught up with Game in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, he said he was caught off-guard by the news. “It happens so fast sometimes. I felt the same way I felt when I woke up and they said that Jam Master Jay got murdered, and then I woke up this morning to a text [saying], ‘Guru is dead.’ ” Game said he got the text from a DJ in New York, and things like that can serve as a wake-up call, especially when people pass in an untimely fashion. He even compared the late, legendary MC’s impact on East Coast hip-hop to Ice Cube’s influence on the West. “That’s like waking up tomorrow — and knock on wood — and somebody like Cube died,” Game said. “So my condolences to his family and to hip-hop for losing a legend.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. Green Day, ‘American Idiot’ Cast Celebrate ‘Legit Rock And Roll’ Opening Night

‘The night was electric,’ actor Tony Vincent says at afterparty. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt at the “American Idiot” afterparty Photo: MTV News With opening night of the “American Idiot” musical officially in the books, the guys in Green Day can officially focus on something else that’s important: enjoying their natural high. “This is the highest moment I think we’ve ever had as a band, in the 21 years we’ve been around,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News at the “Idiot” afterparty, held at New York’s Roseland Ballroom on Tuesday night. “And we’ve been pretty high,” drummer Tre Cool interjected. That feeling of euphoria extended to the cast of “Idiot,” too. After all, they’ve been working on the production for close to two years now, shepherding it through rehearsals, a run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater last year and, finally, to Broadway. It’s been a labor of love every step of the way, so, you know, they were feeling pretty good at the party too. “It’s one of those nights that’s going to be really difficult to put into words in the future,” John Gallagher Jr., who plays Johnny, said. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been working on the show for almost two years, so to open it on Broadway — which has always been the ultimate dream, the ultimate destination — it’s just been incredible.” “The night was electric, because the house was incredibly endorsing of us, from the time that the curtain went up,” added Tony Vincent, who plays St. Jimmy. “And when it went down, there was this huge relief, that what we brought to Broadway was legit rock and roll, for the first time in, I think, possibly, ever. And we killed it tonight.” Early reviews of the show have been equally gushing — The New York Times called the production “thrillingly raucous and gorgeously wrought” — and so, there seemed to be nothing to do besides celebrate. After all, it’s been a long journey to get to this point. “[It was] unbelievable. Just completely unbelievable,” Michael Esper, who plays Will, said. “The experience of doing this show tonight was something I will never forget as long as I live. The excitement from the house, the feeling onstage, the love between everybody, it was overpowering.” Do you plan on seeing “American Idiot” on Broadway? Green Day Moved ‘To Tears’ By ‘American Idiot’ Musical

‘You just abandon hope of a tissue and let ’em stream,’ bassist Mike Dirnt tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Mike Dirnt at “American Idiot” on Broadway Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Green Day aren’t exactly the kind of guys you’d expect to shed tears over anything, but the first time they watched rehearsals for the Broadway musical version of “American Idiot” — opening Tuesday (April 20) at New York’s St. James Theatre — they did just that. “I was watching the actors, and I catch the eye of one of the singers, and he just gives me a little [thumbs-up] sign, and so that gave me the courage to look over at the band,” “Idiot” director Michael Mayer told MTV News. “And there were tears in their eyes. I saw that what we were doing was connecting to them on a heart-and-soul level, and it wasn’t about commerce and it wasn’t about business. … All of that went away, and I saw that these are just three wonderful men who made these wonderful songs, [and] we were giving it back to them as this sort of wonderful gift. I was blown away, and I thought, ‘OK, there is something here.’ ” Of course, we had to verify the story with the guys themselves. So when MTV News caught up with them at “Idiot” rehearsals, we asked: Did the musical really bring on the waterworks? “All of us actually came to tears, because you don’t get to see Green Day play live if you’re actually in Green Day,” bassist Mike Dirnt said. “But to see these voices and the way all the cast were singing, you just abandon hope of a tissue and let ’em stream. … [We were like,] ‘No, that’s allergies, man!’ ” “Yeah, the first night I wasn’t prepared,” drummer Tre Cool added. “[But] the second night, I brought a little thing of tissues and I drank two glasses of wine.” And while Green Day eventually were able to get through rehearsals without the aid of Kleenex, they’re still emotional, even on the eve of the “Idiot” debut. The show is the culmination of many years’ hard work, a journey that began all the way back in 2003, when the band was writing the songs that would become the American Idiot album. The bandmates still can’t believe it’s finally opening on the Great White Way. “You know, I think it’s something that goes beyond [all that]. It’s your wildest dream, but you never actually thought it would happen,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained. “And so, when you start to hear the music in that way … you reminisce about why you wrote the song to begin with. Michael Mayer knew what the intention of the record was, and to see that start to come to life is kind of gripping.” Will you make your way to New York to see “American Idiot” on Broadway? ‘Green Day Rocks Broadway: American Idiot’ Goes Behind The Scenes Of Musical

MTV gives you a peek at rehearsal footage and interviews with the cast. By James Montgomery Green Day at “American Idiot” on Broadway Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images The Broadway version of Green Day’s “American Idiot” doesn’t officially open until April 20, but Friday night (April 16), MTV gave fans an exclusive look into the making of the punk-rock opera when it aired “Green Day Rocks Broadway: American Idiot.” The show detailed the long journey from the recording of the Idiot album in 2003 to rehearsals at New York’s St. James Theatre and, at every step of the way, the pressure to deliver the goods was off the charts. “Right around 2003, I think, as a band, we wanted to have a monumental moment. We wanted to make a concept album, we knew that,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained. “Politically, when we were writing it, American Idiot was trying to make sense out of a big mess. We were trying to find something to believe in. It’s about people becoming lost and trying to find their way. And I think that’s been going through our songs since 1988.” Armstrong said that, to a man, Green Day always believed that Idiot should end up on the stage, but they didn’t think they’d ever find the right team to help that transition. Until they met “Spring Awakening” director Michael Mayer, who took on the project and guided it through an initial run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California last year. “This album is our baby. To see it get put in the hands of other people, it’s great. We’ve always thought that somehow there should be some sort of stage version, because that’s what was going on in our heads,” Armstrong said. “[And] Michael really stuck to the heart of the album, which are the characters, like Jesus of Suburbia. But he also created new characters by using different, little subliminal things that we put in special packaging. Like the character Tunny, it’s a brand-new character. Will, it’s a brand-new character, too.” Through rehearsal footage and interviews, we met the Broadway cast , which features “Spring Awakening” star John Gallagher, Jr as Johnny (the so-called “Jesus of Suburbia”), Michael Esper as Will, Stark Sands as Tunny, Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy and Rebecca Naomi as Whastername. It’s a big, diverse collection of talent, but they all had one thing in common: a mutual love for the American Idiot album. “I can remember just driving around in my mother’s minivan, and just cranking that record as loud as it would go,” Gallagher said. “And really, just feeling understood, and there was this direct line of communication that I felt coming from that record.” “The album is really like a rallying cry for our generation,” Mary Faber, who plays Heather, added. And though some of the characters were created by Mayer, Armstrong said what resonates most to him about the musical — and, what he thinks fans will relate to — is that they’re close to his own heart … and probably yours, too. And, at the end of the day, that’s what the stage version of “American Idiot” is really all about. “Those people remind me of my friends, and they remind me of myself,” Armstrong said. “I guarantee that what’s presented on stage someone will absolutely be able to latch onto,” Vincent added. Brazil to Welcome New Woodstock in October 2010?

Itu, a small town 100 kilometers from Sao Paulo, could be the location of a new edition of Woodstock, that little festival in 1969 that changed everything. Even though the event has not been confirmed, a well known advertising personality from Brazil is giving twitter updates and announcing they'll be able to talk about it in a month. More inside. Says Yahoo Brazil that the event would be a partnership between the company Groove Concept and advertising guru Eduardo Fischer. Even if the businessman and his company have released notes stating that all news so far is pure speculation, he has written on his twitter account: “In 29 days we'll be able to talk about a big sustainability even that will need your participation. #WOODSTOCK AND YOU HELPING THE PLANET”. Yahoo Brazil goes on to say that the festival's creator, Michael Lang, has authorized the organization of the event, and that it would take place on October 07-09 in a ranch called Maeda, information that also confirms a2media. Both say that bands could include Green Day, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, Pearl Jam and Bob Dylan, although Fischer has made clear that nothing is official yet. However, the a2media blog noted that Pearl Jam could be giving some clues about their participation in Woodstock Brazil through their website. There's also an event site at last.fm. What do you think? Is this happening? If so, we cannot wait! We'll keep you posted. added by: love_is_my_religion
