Busta Rhymes Recalls LONS’ ‘Yo! MTV Raps’ Breakup

‘I’ll never forget that day,’ Busta says of his group’s 1993 split on set of classic MTV show, which returns Sunday on MTV2. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Rahman Bugg Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News “Yo! MTV Raps” meant so much to so many people. More than just a weekly video show, “Yo!” brought fans into the then-undocumented worlds of their favorite rap stars. ” ‘Yo! MTV Raps,’ just in a nutshell, gave everybody an opportunity to look at artists as real people,” Busta Rhymes told MTV News of the groundbreaking series, which will make a return on Sunday on MTV2 at 12 a.m. ET. “You saw us when we were upset, you saw us when we were happy, you saw us when we were beefin’, you saw us when we were celebrating some sh–.” For Busta, who started his career as a member of the 1990s Long Island, New York, rap quartet Leaders of the New School , “Yo! MTV Raps” documented one of the most pivotal moments in his career. “Leaders of the New School broke up on ‘Yo! MTV Raps,’ with Fab Five Freddy hosting it,” Busta recalled. “I’ll never forget that day.” It was 1993 and LONS had just released their second album, T.I.M.E. (The Inner Mind’s Eye), which was anchored by their #1 Billboard Hot Rap Single “What’s Next.” Still, despite their growth as a group, Busta Rhymes and member Charlie Brown began collaborating with other acts as soloists. Bus had already delivered a scene-stealing verse on A Tribe Called Quest’s 1991 “Scenario” and appeared on Heavy D’s “A Bunch of N—as” with a then-unknown Notorious B.I.G. Brown had opened up doors for himself as well, also appearing on “Scenario” and Funkmaster Flex’s “Nuttin’ but Flavor” with Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Biz Markie. “Me and C. Brown, we ain’t really dig each other for a long time,” Busta said, citing a silent competition between him and his former bandmate. During the 1993 episode of “Yo!” all the members introduced themselves for the camera, shouting out Leaders in the same breath — all except Brown. “Just lounging, getting to know myself and what my capabilities are and what I’m gonna do in life,” he said. “The cameras is rolling and we’re looking at each other like, what the f— this n—a talkin’ about,” Busta recalled. “We’re steppin’ to Brown beefin’ like, ‘What is this?’ [And he’s like,] ‘I don’t wanna be in the group no more.’ ” Busta Rhymes went on to release his solo debut The Coming in 1996 and has enjoyed one of the most storied careers in hip-hop. On November 17, the Dungeon Dragon announced his latest deal with Cash Money Records and Google Music, but despite all of his highlights, the LONS split ultimately made Busta who he is today. “That was just a big moment. That was a defining moment for me,” he said. Watch “MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps: Classic Cuts” on December 4 at 12 a.m. ET, immediately after the “2011 Sucker Free Awards.” Related Artists Busta Rhymes

BADBADNOTGOOD , the group responsible for some of the best jazz covers of artists you wouldn’t ever associate with jazz, are back with a nine minute rap cover assault, which sees them take on Madvillain (‘Supervillian Theme’), MF DOOM (‘Vomitspit’) and King Geedorah ‘Fazers’. They’re definitely on the right end of the ‘quirky cover’ spectrum, with Richard Cheese being on the other end, but their work… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : The 405 Discovery Date : 08/11/2011 06:42 Number of articles : 2

‘X Factor’ Drops Tween Supergroup InTENsity

Another of Paula Abdul’s groups, Stereo Hogzz, joins 10-person collective in the bottom two. By Adam Graham Paula Abdul on “X Factor” Photo: FOX It was a tough night for Paula Abdul’s team on Thursday’s (November 3) results episode of “The X Factor,” as two of her groups — Stereo Hogzz and InTENsity — were forced to sing for their lives after earning the lowest number of votes following Wednesday’s performance episode. In the end, InTENsity was shown the “X Factor” door, leaving Stereo Hogzz to fight another day in the competition. Unlike “American Idol,” results on “The X Factor” are not based strictly on viewer votes. The two competitors with the lowest vote totals are asked to sing one final song, with the judges ultimately deciding who goes home. In their big showdown, Houston fivesome Stereo Hogzz tackled Samantha Sang’s 1977 hit “Emotion,” which was later popularized by Destiny’s Child, while InTENsity — the group cobbled together by the judges from 10 eliminated individual singers — took on Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” InTENsity was voted off by a 3-1 vote, with Simon Cowell the lone vote for InTENsity to stay. His vote against Stereo Hoggz came just 24 hours after he said of their performance, “I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now who are as good as you.” InTENsity’s Wednesday mash-up of “Kids in America” and “Party Rock Anthem” earned them high marks from the judges, with L.A. Reid calling the performance “fun, fun, fun” and Nicole Scherzinger dubbing it, “fun-tastic” and “fun-nomenal.” Cowell called the performance terrific while Abdul pledged that she was proud of her group. As Thursday’s show rushed toward its finish, no one from InTENsity commented on the group’s ouster, with host Steve Jones describing them as “inconsolable” while he threw to the season premiere of “Bones.” Had the judges landed on a 2-2 tie, the act with the lowest number of viewer votes would have been kicked off the show. Thursday also featured a performance from Outasight, who performed his single “Tonight is the Night,” while the top 12 opened the show with a group take on David Guetta’s “Without You.” What did you think of Thursday’s “X Factor” results show? Let us know in the comments!

‘Walking Dead’ Star Jon Bernthal Explains Shane’s ‘Trek’

‘You’re not doing it to be the hero but because you love him,’ actor tells MTV News of his character’s dangerous choices. By Josh Wigler Jon Bernthal Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images “Walking Dead” character Shane Walsh ( Jon Bernthal ) cannot catch a break. Once the alpha dog in this ragtag group of survivors, Shane is now at the bottom of the totem pole with everything stripped away from him: Former lover Lori has returned to his best friend Rick’s open arms, everyone’s following Rick’s lead, and Shane wants nothing more than to get the heck out of Dodge and kiss a bad situation goodbye. But all that changed the moment that Carl Grimes, Rick and Lori’s young son, took a bullet to the gut. In an instant, Shane changed his tune and set out to help his best friend get through a desperate situation by risking life and limb to secure medical supplies for Carl’s surgery. But as is so often the case on “The Walking Dead,” things did not go as planned, and Shane now finds himself cornered by a pack of flesh-hungry walkers with no apparent way out. It’s an especially scary situation considering that the smash-hit AMC series — now two episodes into its second season — has already passed the point in which Shane died in the “Walking Dead” comic books, leaving one to wonder whether or not this is the final hoorah for Rick’s best pal. You might think that Shane, who was a split second from leaving this group just one episode ago, is currently regretting his decision to go out and help Carl. But actor Jon Bernthal has a different explanation for his character’s choice. “One of the things I love about this show is that the situations and circumstances give these characters an opportunity to redeem themselves,” Bernthal told MTV News about Shane’s current mind-set. “You can be completely on the outs with everyone in the group, but then here’s this wonderful opportunity to redeem yourself. Save the kid, the kid you love. Save the woman you love’s child. Save your best friend that your relationship is dead and gone. You’re doing it not to be the hero but because you love him.” Doing great, brave things in the name of love is a noble idea, but it’s a dangerous one as well, Bernthal warned. “With Shane, I think he really figures out, he adopts this new world order in this new world they’re living in. Things like guilt, shame and trying to do things that are morally right are far less important and really have no place in this new world compared to surviving and doing what you have to do to stay alive and protect the people you love,” he said. “If you take that a step further, it gets very dangerous very fast: If you’re with a group of people and you’re trying to survive and one person is holding you back or slowing you down, in this world, the right thing to do is to help that person and bring them along,” he continued. “In [the world of ‘The Walking Dead’], the right thing to do is to kill that person and send them away. I think Shane, that whole kind of mission you’re referring to, I think it starts Shane off on a trek that will change him forever.” Either Shane’s “trek” is going to be a short one, or he’ll find some way to survive his current situation. Regardless of what happens next, Bernthal teased that Shane’s episode three future is all about “going on that mission, man. Going on that mission and making hard choices.” What did you think of this week’s “Walking Dead”? Tell us in the comments.
