Big Boi Proves He’s A ‘Master’ On Solo Debut Sir Lucious Left Foot

Long-awaited album, featuring T.I., Gucci Mane, YelaWolf and others, due out this week. By Jayson Rodriguez Big Boi Photo: MTV News Big Boi is a staunch defender of the Outkast legacy, but the slick Atlanta MC is also quick to clarify his own stature within the confines of the partnership. “Outkast is a supergroup,” he told MTV News on Tuesday (July 6), stressing that even when the duo aren’t together, they’re equally capable of delivering quality music. And right now, Big Boi is basking in the critical acclaim of his long-in-the-works proper solo debut , Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. The project, which was originally slated to be released on Jive Records two years ago, is coming out this week on Def Jam Records. “It’s basically the same album. I could have been done, like, a year ago,” Big Boi said. “But being that we were having creative differences — you know, every time they rejected what I was doing, I would go back in the studio and work on more stuff. The last two songs, ‘You Ain’t No DJ’ and ‘Be Still,’ were the last two records, but everything else was already on there.” For Sir Lucious Left Foot, Big Boi assembled a ragtag collection of artists, from established talents like T.I. and Gucci Mane to upstarts YelaWolf and his own artist Janelle Monae. The result, however, is a cohesive collection that hinges on the Outkast sound but is still wily enough to venture into new terrain, as evidenced on the slinky track “Shutterbugg.” Big Boi said the set showcases his talent, which he feels is at its peak at the moment thanks to his solo effort. “It’s good. I started off 16 years old, I’m 35 now, I’m in my prime,” he said. “The whole Sir Lucious Left Foot thing, the simple way I can put it is like when Luke Skywalker became a Jedi. So I’m a master of my craft. As a producer and MC, I take the craft very seriously. We might be lurking in the shadows for a minute, but when we lurking we working.” Related Artists Big Boi

‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’ To Give Dirty South Its Props

Drake, Rick Ross, Diddy, Gucci Mane among rappers performing tributes on the show. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South” promises fans energetic performances by some of rap’s all-time greats, when the latest installment in the tribute series airs Monday night (June 7). This year’s show is dedicated to hip-hop originating from down bottom: Luther Campbell and his Miami group the 2 Live Crew; producers Jermaine Dupri, Organized Noize and Timbaland; J. Prince and the Houston-based Rap-A-Lot music empire; and Master P and the No Limit soldiers who turned New Orleans on its ear. “Tonight is gonna be historical,” DJ Khaled told MTV News last week as the show taped at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. “To be a part of a historical moment like this … I been with [Rick] Ross, I seen Bun B, I seen Luke. I seen Pitbull, Trina, Goodie Mob. Just the rehearsal alone, I had goose bumps. This is big for the South — this is big for music period.” Among the acts honoring this year’s class are Khaled and Ross, Paul Wall, Lil Jon, Drake, Trina, Pitbull, Nelly and the St. Lunatics, as well as Diddy and Gucci Mane. Meanwhile, T.I. and Jonah Hill participated as presenters; Craig Robinson hosts. “Just being in jail three weeks ago, that was so big for me,” Gucci told Miss Info about his involvement in the ceremony. “No pressure. Everything is downhill from there,” he told the media personality. “Nothing bigger than … getting your freedom back. I don’t have nothing to prove.” During rehearsals last week, Silkk the Shocker said he was proud of what his brother, Master P, had accomplished . “With me, first of all, shouts out to him, ’cause I got to see greatness for a long time,” Silkk said. “It’s very good to finally see him get honored for it. And then, I think a lot of people out there also appreciate what he’s done. I perform all the time, but to actually perform and give back to him and show him what he means to us, that’s amazing for me.” P told MTV News that one of his greatest contributions was selling so many records without the backing of a major label. “When it comes down to putting out records, people are afraid. They say, ‘I don’t want to put out too many records,’ ” P explained of the conventional rationale. “My thing was, with No Limit, when you’re hot, you’re hot, you give ’em whatever you can give ’em. That’s what I teach my family: When you got ’em, give it to ’em, ’cause when you got a fanbase, feed that fanbase. There’s no such thing as too much music. We accomplished something that nobody did, to be able to sell 75 million records independently and to be honored for hip-hop is a blessing and lets you know we been dong the right thing.” Some of the can’t-miss moments on this year’s “Hip Hop Honors” are Bow Wow dressed up like Kris Kross to perform the JD-produced classic “Jump,” and the lively return of Mystikal during P’s “Make ‘Em Say Ugh.” Whose set are you most looking forward to? Gucci Mane Says Warm Post-Prison Reception ‘Strengthens’ Him

‘I feel like I got a whole new beginning,’ the rapper tells Atlanta DJ Frank Ski morning after his release. By Shaheem Reid Gucci Mane Photo: Warner Bros. The “Welcome Home Gucci Mane” campaign is in full swing. On Wednesday night, Gucci’s good friends Shawty Lo and DJ Holiday were waiting at the Fulton County Jail to greet him upon his release. On Wednesday night, a host of other Gucci supporters gathered at the Georgian Terrace hotel in Atlanta for a dinner honoring the ATL street heavyweight. Monica, the Diplomats’ Chubbie Baby, Big Boi, Wale, Kandi Burruss, Jazze Pha, DJ Drama and L.A.D., Sean Garrett, Waka Flocka Flame and, of course, Lo and Holiday all came out to show love. Gucci LaFlare was a guest on the DJ Frank Ski V103 morning show on Thursday (May 13), where he reflected on the previous night’s festivities. “It makes me feel good. It strengthens me even more,” the Atlanta rapper said. While on-air, Gucci also revealed that his next album, The State vs. Radric Davis: The Appeal, is due out at the end of August. He told listeners that he would want to work with Andre 3000 and Jamie Foxx on this follow-up to his December ’09 project. When asked how jarring it was for him to go to prison last year, right before the release of The State vs. Radric Davis — an album that had the potential to be his superstar-making effort — Gucci said knowing some months earlier that he was going in made it somewhat easier. “It was little behind the scenes things that everybody didn’t know,” Gucci explained to Ski. “They had a warrant for my arrest about four or five months before I even went in. So I was already dealing with it. I was trying to do all I could in case I did go to jail, so I could keep it going. “I feel like I got a whole new beginning, like my career just started again,” he added. Jessica Simpson Says She’s Not ‘Wild’ Enough To Join Smashing Pumpkins

‘I don’t know that I can stand onstage and represent Billy the way he is,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson Photo: MTV News Jessica Simpson recently worked with Billy Corgan on her new song “Who We Are” — so is there any chance that Simpson could become a member of Corgan’s band the Smashing Pumpkins in the future? “I don’t know that I would be a good addition to the Smashing Pumpkins,” she joked. “You gotta be a little bit more wild and crazy.” She admitted that perhaps her image isn’t a right fit for Corgan and his group. “I mean, I have some crazy moments in my life or things about me, but I don’t know that I can stand onstage and represent Billy the way he is,” she added. “He does that fine on his own.” Despite their differences, Simpson regards Corgan as a “dear friend” and shared that he was a great help to her when she recorded her latest track. “I asked him to help out with arranging the song,” she explained. “And he had some ideas to change it up a bit musically and some really cool arrangements and some great guitar things.” Simpson said that working with Corgan really taught her a lot. “To be able to sit with Billy [is a learning experience], and I always feel comfortable with him ’cause he is a close friend of mine,” she said. “And I know he had my best interest at heart and it was great to be able to collaborate with him and to have him there in the studio.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Jessica Simpson

Gucci Mane Recorded BurrrPrint 2HD Tracks From Jail

‘He rapped a cappella over the phone, and we matched up the beat to it in the studio,’ DJ Holiday tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Gucci Mane’s BurrrPrint 2HD mixtape Photo: Brick Squad/Warner Bros. The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive On Tuesday, we slid you the exclusive gem that Gucci Mane is putting out a mixtape album on April 13. While Gucci is in jail now for a probation violation, we have his main accomplice in all this, DJ Holiday, to let us in on the odds and ends. “It’s the warm-up before Writing’s on the Wall 2, ” Holiday said of The BurrrPrint 2HD. “I talk to him every other day. His spirit is up. He’s 1,000. He called me to get an update of what’s going on in the city. My tapes is crazy. Waka is the hottest thing out here. Nicki is on fire. He was like, ‘You think they miss our tapes?’ I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ He said, ‘Let’s do something. [But] you know I can’t move like I want to.’ I said, ‘Let’s knock it out on some over-the-phone sh–.’ “They gonna really f— with the mixtape, because he’s really rapping on the tape from the phone,” Holiday continued. “We matched up a beat with Drumma Boy, and [Gucci] rapped on it. But he rapped a cappella over the phone, and we matched up the beat to it in the studio. It’s f—ing bananas. I thought it was creative. You know how Shyne was locked up and you’d get a freestyle from the phone? I said, ‘Let’s take it another step.’ We recorded him rapping on the phone in the mic … and went from there. Then we matched it with the beat Drumma Boy made. It came out crazy, and it sounds good too.” “New Gucci Mane mixtape is going to be crazy!!!” Drumma Boy said. “Gucci kept tellin’ me how much of an impact he wanted to make with this mixtape, and with him being incarcerated, we had to be very creative in how we got this done. One of my favorite records and most difficult records that I’ve ever produced was BurrrPrint 2 off the mixtape. He called me one day I was in the studio making beats, and he told me he had written some new verses and wanted me to hear them. So I stopped doing what I was doing to listen. After five seconds of listening, I was like, ‘Stop. I’mma record you while you rap through the phone.’ I recorded his verses but later realized that there was no consistent tempo. This means I had to chop up each word for word to punch into tempo, which took me about five to six hours. After I had lined up his verses, I then began to add music around the verses, structure the build, and then create a hook that matched the intensity of his verses. Overall, I spent a good two days producing that record, and it’s a great feeling to see people’s reactions after them finding out I produced the record of Gucci Mane through the phone.” The other records on BP2HD are unreleased records Gucci had in the stash. “Anybody who knows Gucci, they know his work ethic in that studio is ridiculous,” Holiday said. “I got 10 songs in one damn day. All brand-new records, bruh. Maybe one record you might know. Everything else is brand-new. One song is with Ludacris called ‘Atlanta Is a Zoo.’ It’s a club banger. One song is crazy with Jim Jones. He’s got another one with Rick Ross and Yo Gotti. Heavy features on there. It’s a mixtape album. The label [Asylum] is going all out with it.” Shawty Redd and Fat Boi are among those who contributed tracks. Drumma Boy handled most of the production. Gucci’s camp is hoping BurrrPrint 2HD will tide fans over until Mr. LaFlare gets home. As soon as Gucci comes home from jail, he plans to record the sequel to his mixtape The Writing’s on the Wall and later put out his album ( The State vs. Radric Davis: The Appeal ). DJ Holiday’s next mixtape is Waka Flocka Flame’s Flockaveli. Holiday’s debut album will be released later this year and called either The Tape or We Working.
