Source: FOX / Getty We finally get some good news on tonight’s episode of Empire . Kai, who has been missing in Nigeria for five days at this point, has been found. Jamal cheeses from ear to ear after getting the call with this news and heads to the hospital post haste! It’s obviously a joyous reunion. What ended up happening to Kai was that he and his crew got ambushed but managed to escape. However, it was a journey trying to get back to the US with no money or passport. This is also the moment we discover that Kai has HIV. Kai didn’t kick Cookie and Jamal out of the room when the doctor was giving him his medical run down. One of the things we learn, which clues us in, is that Kai’s viral load was high because he hadn’t been taking his medication (because he couldn’t). Jamal has known about Kai’s status and had been taking the proper precautions to keep himself negative (like taking PrEP , for example), but imagine Cookie’s shock when she discovers this! Jamal tries to explain to Cookie that she shouldn’t be worried, but she’s so shaken up that she goes home and spills the beans to Lucious. Cookie asks Lucious what they should do about this and Lucious surprises us all when he tells her they should mind their business. Cheers to growth. Lucious understands that you can’t keep two determined grown people apart. Cookie, however, is still a bit dense in getting that mainly because she needs to educate herself about HIV and AIDs, which she does, and because she’s just protective of her baby. Hakeem wants to get back with Tiana, and while she’s down for some d, she’s not convinced that she wants to be with him due to his antics and she wants to focus on getting her music career back together. That latter part takes a turn when Tiana presents new music to Kingsley at Empire and he hates it. He’s super rude to her and insults Hakeem . Basically, he wants her to scrap the project and start over. Becky seems to like it and side eyes Kingsley, who doesn’t deal well with managing artists interpersonally very well. The song was dope but the message here is obvious: Kingsley wouldn’t know a hit if he tripped over one while walking down the street. In other news, Lucious has been struggling with Devon. The thing with Devon is, he has the voice and the looks, but his presence, heart, and soul aren’t quite there. Lucious wants him to stop holding back and taps Jamal to come help. Jamal works his magic, of course, and successfully gets Devon ready to make his debut. We’ll get there in a second. Tiana surprise drops that track she did with Blake (the one where Hakeem wrote the lyrics for Blake and then Blake made Tiana promised that the song would stay between them) because she’s pissed off at Kingsley. Hakeem isn’t happy when he hears it because he’s jealous. Hold that thought. Now we’re at Devon’s performance. The audience is feeling him and so is a record label owner that Lucious has been courting. It’s a man that Lucious knows from back in the day and he wants to sign Devon. They got themselves a deal! Blake confronts Tiana about dropping the track because once again, that song was never supposed to come out. Then Tiana says when she “heard what Blake wrote” she just had to drop the track. Hakeem overhears this and gets pissed at the thought that people think that people think Blake wrote it and thinks Blake is trying to take credit. So, Hakeem does what he does, and punches Blake in the face multiple times. It’s also important to note (if you haven’t picked that up by now) that Hakeem also feels like Blake is trying to steal his woman. Blake and Hakeem get to fighting for a sec (it’s a miracle Hakeem is even breathing through this with his collapsed lung situation) and after it’s broken up, Hakeem has a flashback of Tiana in labor. She had a high-risk pregnancy with twins and a rough delivery. Ultimately, she almost died delivering a boy and a girl, and the girl died. They went through a lot of strife, but that doesn’t always mean they should be together. Tiana is tired of Hakeem’s volatile behavior and says she’s done with him. For real, for real. The episode wraps on a high note. Kai proposes to Jamal. He got the ring the moment he got out of the hospital. But guess what? Jamal planned to propose too! So then he gets down on his one knee and they pop the question to each other. Awww…but we’re still stressed out about who tf ends up dying! Source: FOX / Getty Empire’s finally back! Tonight we pick up where the fall finale left off. Claudia, Lucious’ cognitive therapist, went all Misery on us and kidnapped him. She has him chained to a piano in a cabin in the woods, demanding that he love her. It was Dwight that told her he loved her (because he was thinking she was Cookie), but Lucious is back and Lucious loves Cookie. Claudia doesn’t care though, she’s gonna get her man by any means necessary. via GIPHY Angelo is dead. He shot Jamal’s shady #doubleagentbae, Warren, then accidentally got shot and killed in a scuffle with Jamal over the same gun, we saw that play out but now we know the outcome. Jamal is distraught by all of this because he’s not a killer and generally sad that he’s kind of responsible for someone else’s death. However, the good news, according to Thirsty, is that Jamal should legally be in the clear because Warren didn’t die, and he gave a full account of what happened to authorities. This doesn’t keep Jamal from going into a deep depression though. via GIPHY Meanwhile, Claudia has a plan to “kill Lucious” and to bring back Dwight by torturing him, medicating him and playing mind games. Luckily for Lucious, Cookie and Thirsty are onto the fact that he’s missing. Thirsty gets busy and pulls up surveillance footage of Claudia wheeling Lucious out of the hospital. They’ll find him soon enough, but first, they reach out to Claudia’s boss, Gloria, for clues. Gloria tells them that she had a previous client whom she took to a secluded cabin Upstate New York to practice her “unconventional methods.” via GIPHY Let’s be real, “unconventional” means crazy in this case. Cookie and Thirsty know what’s up and they pinpoint Lucious’ location swiftly. Cookie heads to the cabin and all hell breaks loose when Claudia knocks Cookie out and ties her up right along with Lucious (Cookie is tied up with rope instead of chains). Claudia tries to turn this into a therapy session between the two of them. It gets interesting when Lucious and Cookie go back and forth about some of the bitter feelings they had toward each other and also how Cookie’s prison sentence affected all of them. Then Claudia goes full on psycho and tries to slit Cookie’s throat after being taunted. That’s when Gloria, Cookie’s boss comes to the cabin. Claudia steps outside to greet her and then knocks her out to keep her from going inside. While this was going on, Cookie revealed that she happened to have a blade on her. She cut herself (Lucious is still chained up) and hides. Cookie rushes Claudia when she returns to the cabin. They fight, Claudia gets the upper hand and almost shoots Cookie, but Lucious finally gets free just in time. Claudia dares him to shoot her like Lucious would do, but surprisingly he just knocks her out. He wanted to try something different for once and let the police handle it. We’ll see how long that lasts. Finally, the episode winds down with Dre. He’s still in the hospital recovering from his mental breakdown caused by Diana’s appointed psychiatrist screwing with his medication, and he’s also tormented by the fact that he almost killed his father. After stirring from a bad dream, which involves flashbacks of the explosion, Dre resolves to confess to his father. That’s going to go well. via GIPHY It’s quite obvious the rest of this season is going to be bananas! See you next week. Source: FOX / Getty Empire is finally back after being pre-empted by the World Series, and tonight we pick up with Cookie, Thirsty, and the best custody lawyer around grooming Hakeem for their upcoming hearing. The most important thing is that Hakeem shares all the dirty details he can about his relationship with Anika and her connection to his family so there are no surprises. Things get worse when TMZ reports the tea that Lucious Lyon has been suffering from amnesia and lying to his fans about it. Lordt. via GIPHY This means that Cookie could get forced off the board. The threat is definitely looming because later on it comes out that the board believes Cookie has been defrauding the shareholders behind not being forthcoming about Lucious’ condition. Cookie springs a plan in action for Lucious to make an announcement to the press claiming it’s fake news. Then we find out the obvious, Claudia has fallen in love with “Dwight.” She tells him she crossed the line and wants to be professional, but it’s too late. Plus, Dwight reels her in, even more, when he says he doesn’t want to go back to being Lucious again. Claudia claims she can help him be a better man. Back to Cookie’s plan. She’s the only one who thinks it’s a good idea to invite press to follow Lucious around for 48 hours. Lucious is obviously fragile, but he goes along with it anyway. And everyone else is rightfully nervous about this. You know how Dwight is prone to getting overwhelmed and passing out when too many lights flash. via GIPHY Jamal is still galavanting with Warren the snake, who actually seems to be falling in love for real. They run into Angelo out and about and engage in a contentious discussion, of course. Angelo starts talking wild greasy (while pretending he doesn’t know Warren, of course), and even asks Jamal if he ever wondered who leaked the details to the press about his pops. He walks away from Jamal saying, “Your chick looks thirsty.” Bug planted. There’s a reason for this, though. Hold that thought. Later on, Lucious’ meeting with the press starts off well, but then he gets triggered by a song Shyne plays. Claudia pulls him out of the fray to calm him down. Lucious should really just go home, but it’s not in Cookie’s best interests for this publicity stunt to fail because Thirsty then delivers news that if this first album (of 20 for the year) doesn’t get turned in soon, and there’s more bad press for the company, then Cookie will be forced to step down from the board. But then, super producer, Eddie Barker (Forrest Whittaker), who is Lucious’ relative, walks in, followed by Lucious, who is back in the game, and the press goes nuts. via GIPHY Warren confronts Angelo about almost blowing his cover and Angelo says he did what he did to keep Warren in the game because it’s obvious that he caught feelings for Jamal. Warren denies it, but we all know what’s up. Then they get interrupted by Hakeem. Warren scurries away and hides and Angelo taunts Hakeem to the point where he gets punched in the face. That was the plan. Now Hakeem looks unstable. BUT ANIKA IS A MURDERER AND A STALKER AND DIANA KIDNAPPED BELLA! Why is this even an issue? via GIPHY Sure, Diana swore Hakeem to secrecy, but now is the time for Hakeem to blow up her spot and play just as dirty. Hakeem thinks it’s a good idea to run away with Bella to Cuba and tries to get Tiana on board with this plan. She thinks it’s silly, but says she’ll meet him at the airport after taking care of some things. Y’all know she’s not dimwitted like Hakeem. She tells Cookie what’s up and of course, Cookie and Tiana meet him at the airport to shut him down. Cookie gives him a speech about how they’re Lyons and they’re going to fight this. via GIPHY Then we find out Lucious has synesthesia. In short, that means that when he listens to music his brain sees color. Claudia says his brain has been rewired. He stays up all night seeing color and whatnot and eventually completes the first of 20 albums for the company. Cookie presents the album to the board and tells the truth about Lucious. She downplays Lucious’ brain injury, but it’s not enough. One of the board members suggests that they bring in someone from the outside. Cookie was prepared for this so she brings in Eddie Barker to be the “outside” person because she’s not about to have them bring on a stranger that doesn’t know Empire’s legacy ruin things for her. It goes over well and Eddie becomes her special advisor. via GIPHY Claudia is overseeing another Lucious painting session, and it’s helping him begin to get his memory back. Claudia says his synapses are reawakening because he’s connecting the colors with the music and then they go into a sexy sequence of painting and Lucious imagining Claudia as Cookie. He’s remembering their love and how Cookie was his muse. He says this out loud to Claudia, but he’s not really talking to her. This is going to be a problem though. When Lucious and Claudia wake up, Claudia is all happy and in love about the moments they shared and tells Lucious that he told her he loved her. Lucious then says that he was talking about Cookie. Claudia tells him that he can’t trust his memories and that he’s Dwight, but Lucious says he remembers now and that his name is Lucious. Cookie walks in and demands to know what’s going on. Claudia tries to get Cookie to leave so she can continue to convince Dwight to stick around, but Lucious tells her that she doesn’t call the shots in his house. Cookie has Claudia escorted out stuck on stupid, which will probably come back to bite them later because she knows too much and might decide to be petty. Cookie steps out because it’s time for Hakeem’s hearing, so Lucious doesn’t get to tell her that he’s back yet. It’s really him. You can hear it in his voice. Trouble is definitely afoot. Next week it’s time for Hakeem’s fight to get custody of Bella.
