Between radio hits, headlining gigs and even his own documentary, the French DJ/producer is a dance-music heavyweight. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Getty Images If he built a bridge between urban music and electronic music last year, in 2011, French DJ/producer David Guetta now presides over a superhighway that extends around the world. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Guetta our #2 EDM Artist of 2011 — but that doesn’t begin to explain his impact on the industry. David Guetta is now a pop-music superstar. After collecting a Grammy in February for his remix of Madonna’s “Revolver,” Guetta teased his next opus, Nothing but the Beat, during Miami Music Week in March. His highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s One Love would deliver a feature list on steroids, including Ludacris and Taio Cruz teaming up for first single “Little Bad Girl.” Radio hits came in the form of Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida rapping on “Where Them Girls At” and then the album’s latest single, “Without You,” an emotional track with Usher that David calls “the biggest song” on NBTB. Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson, Sia and Timbaland also all lent their vocals to the double disc. For EDM purists, Nothing but the Beat had plenty to offer, like stellar co-productions with Afrojack (“Lunar” and “The Future”) and Avicii (on the Grammy-nominated “Sunshine”). DJ Mag crowned Guetta the #1 DJ on the planet, and he headlined the world’s biggest festival’s, including Belgium’s Tomorrowland Festival, Miami’s Ultra Music Festival and Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival. Guetta has also hit screens small and large this year. His documentary with Burn, also titled “Nothing but the Beat,” has been screened in New York and L.A. He’s hit “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” with Usher, and filmed a viral video with Web sensation Keenan Cahill . His American Music Awards performance with Nicki Minaj seems to indicate that “Turn Me On” will be the next single from Nothing but the Beat, and fans can expect a shocking new video (and much more, we’re sure) early next year. MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV’s Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage. Rapper and French DJ have collaborated on ‘Where Them Girls At?’ By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Nicki Minaj is up for two American Music Awards , and she will host the A-list bash with Pitbull . Now comes word that the colorful MC will also take the stage. She’s set to kick off the show with David Guetta . The Hollywood Reporter reports that the duo who recorded the track “Where Them Girls At?” for Guetta’s album Nothing but the Beat will start the party that will also include performances by Chris Brown, Katy Perry, LMFAO , Marc Anthony, Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Pitbull and Maroon 5. Guetta and Minaj began their love affair when they hit the studio to record the club track. When MTV News spoke to Guetta , the French DJ had only the nicest things to say about the fiery rapper. “It was an amazing start working together because I really wanted to work some more with her. I’m a really huge fan. To be honest, it’s very rare that I call artists — most of the time they call me. I’ve been chasing her for like a year because I really wanted to work with her,” Guetta confessed. Minaj has made it clear that the love goes both ways. “He really is a master — a master at his craft,” Minaj said earlier this year. “He’s got it down pat. For me to link up with him, I’m just honored that he was reaching out. When I met him, I liked him instantly. He’s sweet, he’s humble, he’s funny, and he’s just a person you want to be around.” To see what these two have up their sleeves at the show, check out the AMAs when they are broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on November 20 at 8 p.m. on ABC. The show will be preceded by a one-hour red-carpet special at 7 p.m. Related Artists Nicki Minaj David Guetta

‘There’s one [scene] in particular that stands out to me that’s just horrific,’ actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead says in our Fall Movie Preview. By Eric Ditzian Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton in “The Thing” Photo: Kerry Hayes/Universal It’s a horror-movie question almost 30 years in the making: What the hell happened to the Norwegian researchers discovered toward the beginning of the 1982 John Carpenter cult fave “The Thing” ? Kurt Russell and his crew do end up stumbling into some terrifying answers, but Carpenter’s flick concentrates on the alien horrors the Americans endure. The 2011 fall movie season, however, is set to uncover what really happened before Russell touched down in the Antarctic, as director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. delivers a prequel story, also called “The Thing,” to theaters on October 14. As part of MTV News’ Fall Movie Preview, we’re not only debuting an exclusive clip and photo from the horror flick about an alien able to mimic the likenesses of other life forms, but we sat down for a chat with star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays a young researcher confronting the extraterrestrial danger. She spoke about the pressures of remaking a classic, the criticism from some corners about introducing a central female character to the action, and the challenges of reinventing an alien creature while staying true to its original form. MTV : What’s the bigger threat for you on set in Canada? Is it losing your voice from screaming all the time or losing your fingers from frostbite? Mary Elizabeth Winstead : I think it was fainting from nearly hyperventilating. That was the biggest thing. Also, by the end of it, we were shooting in the summer and we were acting like it was freezing cold and we were all in parkas and layers and layers of gloves and hats, and it was humid and hot outside. There was a lot of heat exhaustion setting in. It was kind of crazy — we had to act cold. I didn’t have to do a lot of screaming in this, which was good. It was just a lot of that kind of heavy breathing, where you’re trying to keep your composure and trying not to fall apart. It’s that really small, fast breathing and take, after take, after take of that kind of thing, you start to get lightheaded and start to get a little woozy. MTV : There are a lot of remakes and new takes on cult classics, and I think a lot of people feel, “I’m OK with it, if they get it right.” For you guys on set, was that sort of pressure on your minds? And do you think you did get it right? Winstead : There was definitely a lot of pressure, because everyone involved is a fan of the John Carpenter version. None of us wanted to mess it up and none of us wanted to sully the legend of the John Carpenter film. We wanted to add to it in a positive way, a fun way, and make something that could go hand in hand with that film. And that’s what we did. I think we made a film that’s a really great standalone film, but also something that’s really cool if you’re a fan of the John Carpenter version, just to get a little insight into what may have occurred before. I think it’s just a good movie regardless of how you feel about remakes and prequels and all of that. At least you can go see a good film and hopefully put that aside and just be there and go along for the ride. MTV : Since this is a prequel, we presumably know what’s going to happen at the end. How did you keep the suspense going? Winstead : I think that it’s exciting to wonder who is a Thing and who isn’t, and that’s really where the suspense lies. A lot of films in the genre, you kind of know it’s not gonna end up well. I don’t think anyone is really expecting a happy ending. But that kind of going along for the ride and being in the suspense of the moment is what’s really exciting. Our story is so great and it’s one that could be played out in so many scenarios, and I think with bringing in completely different characters from completely different backgrounds and countries brings a whole other level of paranoia. It takes it into a different direction, having this language barrier between the characters and having a lot of “us” vs. “them” between the Norwegians and the Americans and things like that was an interesting take on it, made it a not straight-up remake. And it was exciting to me to put a girl in the mix, which people have different opinions on it. But for me, that’s what differentiates it from the John Carpenter version in a big way and makes it a different film, makes it a unique film and one that stands on its own. MTV : What do you mean by different opinions? Do you think people are skeptical of a woman battling aliens? Winstead : I read a lot of comments, which kind of surprised me, to be honest, of people who were really upset that we would dare put a female in “The Thing” when the John Carpenter version was all men. I do think it was an interesting dynamic to see men, grown men, all living together and dealing with this paranoia and isolation. But I also think it’s interesting having a young woman thrown into the mix trying to take control of the situation where nobody trusts her opinion. It’s a very different and interesting dynamic and it’s not gonna be the same as the original version, but that’s what’s great about it to me. MTV : Anyone who’s seen Ellen Ripley [Sigourney Weaver in “Alien”] do her thing knows that a woman can take on an alien. Winstead : What’s cool about it, for this character, a lot of her strength lies in her intellect rather than her muscles. It’s not like one of those characters where I come in and act like I can kick everybody’s ass. It’s not realistic. All these guys are bigger than me, stronger than me. But my character has a really strong intellect, which gets her far in this film. MTV : So you didn’t have to hit the gym? Winstead : No, none of that, which was nice. MTV : How does this one build? How long before, you know, sh– gets bad? Winstead : It’s a definite slow burn, which is great. It makes it feel like a classic horror film. You really set up the characters and you really build the fear slowly, and once sh– hits the fan, it gets crazy and it doesn’t stop. It’s super-intense, the last half of the film. You just hold your breath and you don’t breathe again till the credits roll. That’s really great. The first part of the movie is really slow and foreboding, and you feel this slow dread building because you do know what’s coming. You know that something crazy and horrible is gonna happen to these people, but they don’t know it yet and kind of having that feeling as the audience is one that’s exciting and creepy and terrifying. MTV : Carpenter’s movie really was horrifying and just gross. Really gross. Are you guys taking the same angle? Winstead : The “assimilation scenes” are definitely terrifying and disgusting and just creepy as hell. There’s one in particular that stands out to me that’s just horrific. I can’t really describe it in too much detail because I don’t wanna give anything away. It just blows your mind. Just seeing it being filmed, because we have a lot of practical effects stuff there, which is great and kind of seeing the beginning of it on set was terrifying in itself and disgusting. They just took it to a whole new level, the stuff they added in postproduction. MTV : We get a glimpse of the creature in the trailer. Because it’s a prequel, do you guys have to stay very true to the first one or do you have room to play? Winstead : I think they definitely kept the John Carpenter version in mind when it came to the creature design. Definitely it is still that same world, but there is a somewhat new look to it and somewhat different take on it. It’s sort of the 2011 version, but still with that spirit of practical effects. It certainly doesn’t look exactly like the John Carpenter version. As awesome as those effects are, they are out of a certain period. And when you see that, you can kind of tell like, “Oh, those are really awesome ’80s effects.” So you can’t really go exactly for that. You have to bring a little of the modern element in to it too, but hopefully keeping that real tangible quality the ’80s effects had as well. DJ/producer calls their collabo the ‘biggest record’ on his just-released Nothing but the Beat. By Akshay Bhansali Usher Photo: Todd Williamson/ WireImage David Guetta recently told MTV News that the Usher collabo “Without You” is the “biggest record” on his just-released Nothing but the Beat. It’s a rather bold statement, considering his latest album also features Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, will.i.am, Akon, Timbaland, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Hudson , just to name a few. But Guetta has a soft spot for the cinematic team-up with Ush, which he says is equal parts sentimental and hands-in-the-air euphoric. “It’s just totally emotional,” Guetta said. “Some of the record is a proper ballad, and then it goes to that crazy dance beat. It’s perfect for him, because he’s famous for his ballads. And he’s also now famous for those big club records that he comes with. He’s an amazing dancer, so I felt like he was the artist that I needed.” Usher and Guetta first previewed the song in Ibiza, Spain, earlier this summer, with the crowd demanding an encore performance of the sure-to-be-hit song. “It was amazing,” Guetta gushed. “We were not supposed to do this. I always do these kinds of stupid things, playing records when I’m not supposed to play them. And Usher was so excited for this time to be in Ibiza performing in front of those people. He called me onstage and said, ‘Come on. Let’s do it.’ So we did it, and, yeah, they loved it. We had to do it again! They asked for one more.” For some, the combination of Usher and Guetta might seem out of left field. While the DJ/producer works with a variety of artists, he has a pretty tight-knit musical family — but it may come as a surprise that Guetta has known Usher the longest. “I actually speak very often about how thankful I am to will.i.am because he called me to produce ‘I Gotta Feeling’; Akon, when we started to work together, because I wasn’t famous in America; Kelly Rowland and all those guys that came to me when I was not known yet,” Guetta said. “But I have to say that the very first time when someone big from America asked me if I want to work with him, it was Usher. Like, a really long time ago, but we never had the time to do it. So I was so happy to be finally in the studio with him, because he spotted me when I was really not famous yet.” Usher and Guetta already shot the video for “Without You” in Ibiza. The song will follow up Guetta’s current single, “Little Bad Girl,” which features Ludacris and Taio Cruz.
David Guetta is ‘a crazy scientist’ in Nothing But the Beat clip. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta in his music video for “Where Them Girls At” Photo: EMI Music France Garnering over 12.5 million views online in just over a week, crossover beatsmith and global touring DJ David Guetta’s video for “Where Them Girls At” — his latest pop-radio charting single featuring rapper Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj — intentionally or not builds on a previous clip from his album One Love. In Guetta’s video for “Gettin’ Over You,” fans might remember a back-alley dance-off with Fergie, LMFAO and the Jabbawockeez crew in which the music emanating from a studio session unites the neighborhood in the spirit of house music and Guetta’s “one love” mantra. With his video for “Where Them Girls At,” Guetta means to have a more dramatic effect: spreading his unifying gospel not just to one neighborhood, but across the entire city of Los Angeles. The video features the French producer perched high on top of a roof emitting enormous bubbles across L.A. Passersby on the streets watch curiously as the bubbles float about them, but rapper Flo Rida is the first to observe a sunbathing poolside beauty come in physical contact with one: Immediately, as if puppeteered by Guetta himself, she begins to dance frantically. When MTV News caught up with Guetta recently, he explained, “The idea behind the ‘Where Them Girls At’ video is me being kind of a crazy scientist on the rooftop on my own and making bubbles. “Every time they are touching someone, the person becomes totally crazy and starts to do those crazy dance moves,” he continued. “So basically, the bubbles represent the music and the love that I’m trying to give to the world.” A blond Minaj, in a club setting, seems to be another conduit for Guetta’s dance-inducing bubbles, swallowing up a big one and releasing smaller bubbles throughout her verse. Citizens across the City of Angels all begin to cut a rug, and toward the end of the clip, we see just how the mad scientist is releasing his concoction: A bevy of beauties pour soapy water into a hybrid bubble-making DJ setup seemingly straight out of “Back to the Future.” David Guetta’s next album, Nothing But the Beat, — set for an August 30 release — will be a double disc featuring a string of Guetta’s big-name friends, including Usher, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Ludacris, Taio Cruz, Timbaland, Sia and Jennifer Hudson, in addition to Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj. ‘The world is not gonna believe it when they hear it,’ David Guetta tells MTV News of track from his Nothing But the Beat double album. By Matt Elias Nicki Minaj Photo: Chris McKay/WireImage As David Guetta gears up for the August release of his album Nothing But the Beat, it would be all too easy for the French DJ/producer to simply replicate the formula that has made him famous. While Guetta helped usher in a wave of electronic/pop music in the U.S., thanks to collaborations with acts like the Black Eyed Peas and Akon, he has other plans for his upcoming project. “With my previous album, I kind of created a bridge between electronic music from Europe and urban culture from America, and this sound at the time was so futuristic and new, [it] became almost the standard sound of American pop music,” Guetta told MTV News. “So the challenge on my new album was not so much to make hits — because I think I can do this — but more on a creative point of view and to surprise people and come with a new sound. “So it’s a double album,” he explained, “and one album is 100 percent electronic and very experimental, and the other album is 100 percent vocal and has all the biggest and most talented superstars on the planet.” One of those superstars, hip-hop chameleon Nicki Minaj, gets her shine on the album’s lead single, “Where Them Girls At,” alongside rapper Flo Rida. But there’s another track on The Beat that’s likely to expand Minaj’s repertoire. “I’m a big Nicki Minaj fan and I’m really, really proud of this record that we made together. It’s called ‘Turn Me On,’ and she is singing, ” Guetta said. “But like, she’s not trying to sing — she’s really, really singing. And this record is really big, and I’m really proud that she’s done that record. I think that the world is not gonna believe it when they hear it.” While Guetta’s newer fans are listening to the voice-oriented album, which includes features from Lil Wayne, Usher, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson, he’s hoping it serves as a gateway to the double album’s electronic disc. “I feel that I am very blessed that my music has been crossing over but at the same time, my original fans, they’re still the most important ones,” Guetta insisted. “And I’m a DJ first, so my music is very electronic even though I make songs now and they’re being played on the radio. But the fact that I come from a very instrumental culture, it’s still in me. “So I made this electronic album for my original fans, for everybody that came to Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas, that are raving and partying every weekend. But also, I made this electronic album because I want the people that know me for what they heard on the radio and that are buying my album for the big songs, I also want them to discover where I’m coming from and the other side of me.
