Kanye West Isn’t Only Grammy Album Of The Year Snub

Rapper’s critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy didn’t make the cut for Sunday’s top prize, and it’s in good company. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Getty Images One of the favorite parlor games the morning after the Grammy Awards is the predictable bellyaching about which artists got robbed during the big show. And the category that typically draws the most Monday-morning quarterbacking is the biggest one of the night: Album of the Year. Long before the 54th annual ceremony Sunday night, the drumbeat had already begun about an album that failed to make the list despite its wide critical acclaim and deep musicality. Though he’s the leading nominee at this year’s ceremony with seven nods, Kanye West’s career-defining My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy failed to make the cut for the night’s top prize. Take a closer look at this year’s Grammy nominees through photos! Hip-hop heads grumbled that it was a continuation of the Recording Academy’s inability to think outside the mainstream box when awarding a hip-hop album with its highest honor. While Lauryn Hill and Outkast have won in the past, the denial of West’s richly textured, musically adventurous album puts him in pretty good company when it comes to landmark works that either never got a nomination for the award or failed to close the deal. Among the other (in)famous Grammy Album of the Year snubs: 1992 : If any album over the past 20-plus years could be said to completely define its era — not to mention igniting a complete reordering of the musical world — it was Nirvana’s Nevermind. Released in time to be considered at the 1992 Grammys, the landmark album wasn’t even nominated in a year when the winner was Natalie Cole’s Unforgettable … With Love tribute to her late father. Instead of honoring Nirvana, Grammy voters nominated Christian lightweight Amy Grant, Bonnie Raitt, R.E.M. and Paul Simon. Among the other important works that didn’t even make the list: Guns N’ Roses’ ambitious Use Your Illusion double album set, Ten by Pearl Jam and Achtung Baby by U2. 2001 : In one of the all-time Grammy head-scratchers, that year’s honors went to the first album in 20 years from studio-rat duo Steely Dan, Two Against Nature. The pick was especially galling for rock and rap fans, as it meant that another career-pinnacle work, Radiohead’s twisty Kid A and Eminem’s massive The Marshall Mathers LP, had to settle just for being nominated. 2008 : In a year when West garnered his third Album of the Year nod, the Grammys went old-school again, shocking the world by giving the award to veteran jazzman Herbie Hancock’s 47th studio album, the Joni Mitchell tribute River: The Joni Letters. What albums were passed over in the process? Oh, nothing major, just Amy Winehouse’s hugely influential smash breakthrough Back to Black and West’s Graduation. 2009 : The Academy had another chance to make it up to the hip-hop world the following year when Lil Wayne’s massive Tha Carter III was up for the big one. And even though Radiohead’s In Rainbows and Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, or Death and All His Friends were solid contenders, the prize once again went to a lesser-heard disc by a veteran, Raising Sand, a folky collaboration between former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and bluegrass star Alison Krauss. Chris Brown To Remain On Supervised Probation

Singer gets positive report from court, but ordered to remain on probation. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Getty Images In a status hearing on Thursday in Los Angeles, a judge said that Chris Brown is doing a good job complying with the terms of his sentence for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, but that he must remain under the supervision of a probation officer for the time being. According to the Associated Press , Brown was not in court for the hearing where his attorney asked that the singer’s supervised probation end thanks to his good behavior. Superior Court judge George Lomeli, however, agreed with prosecutors, who argued that even with Brown’s good marks to date, he should keep reporting to a probation officer in his home state, Virginia. Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, attempted to end the probation, which is part of the sentence Brown received in June 2009 when he agreed to a plea deal
in which he plead guilty to one count of felony assault and was sentenced to 180 days of community labor and five years of probation. Geragos pointed to a probation report that said that Brown had been truthful with officers, passed all required drug tests and “has made great strides” while under probation. To date, Brown has completed half of the six months of roadside cleanup, graffiti removal and other manual labor he was ordered to do under the terms of the deal. But the AP reported that Lomeli didn’t think it was unreasonable for Brown to say under supervision while he finishes the rest of his community service hours. The singer has already completed anger management and domestic violence counseling and a different judge in the case agreed last year to relax a restraining order that barred Brown and Rihanna from contacting each other or getting too close to one another at music industry events. The hearing came just days before Brown and Rihanna are slated to return to the Grammy stage
for the first time since the February 2009 assault. In advance, tongues have already begun wagging, with rumors flying last month that the exes have reunited recently and have been spending time together again. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Will Katy Perry Or Rihanna ‘Pop’ At The Grammys?

Lady Gaga and Adele also up for two major pop trophies at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her video for “Firework” Photo: EMI The pop stars nominated at this year’s Grammy Awards couldn’t be more different from one another, both visually and sonically. In the two biggest pop categories, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance, every spectrum of pop is represented: from soulful to candy-colored and everything in between. As the Grammy Awards approach, MTV News will break down the contenders in both categories. So, here we go. Best Pop Vocal Album Adele’s 21 has six nominations under its belt at this year’s show, including the biggie, Album of the Year. Since its release nearly a year ago, Adele’s heartbreak opus reigned on radio, the charts and the collective hearts of the lovelorn everywhere. It boasts production from Ryan Tedder, Paul Epworth and Rick Rubin, and tracks the singer’s heartbreak after a split from a former beau. Cee Lo Green gave the world a big “F— You” with his The Lady Killer , which dropped in November 2010, and the album has sustained its momentum thanks to that one track (and Cee Lo’s “The Voice” gig). The album got some songwriting and production help from fellow nominee, Bruno Mars, and in addition to this nod, its track “Fool for You” is also up for some gold. Lady Gaga’s love-yourself album, Born This Way, is a metal-disco composition about romance, New York City and couture. With production from RedOne, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, the album was released last May, and while the sound looked to the future, it also paid homage to her past when she enlisted the late Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Brian May of Queen. Bruno Mars crooned his way to the top of the charts with his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Displaying his love for melodies and lyrics about love and loss, Mars’ experiment in mixing doo-wop and new millennium production value managed to make him a household name and a big-time nominee. Album of the Year-nominated Loud was Rihanna’s return to form. After a dark turn on Rated R, Ri was feeling sunnier, saucier and sassier on the 2010 album that featured production from Stargate and Tricky Stewart and tracks like the fist-pumping “Only Girl (In The World)” and the reggae-influenced “Man Down.” Best Pop Solo Performance On “Someone Like You,” Adele’s big voice and knack for heartache was on full display. The second 21 single got a songwriting and production assist from Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson (the guy who gave us “Closing Time” in the ’90s) and follows Adele as she comes to terms with the loss of her former flame. Like Adele, Bruno Mars put his heart and soul on the line on the Doo-Wops & Hooligans uber-ballad, “Grenade.” The song, produced by the Mars-fronted the Smeezingtons, tracks a distraught man as he realizes the woman he loves doesn’t feel the same way about him. Lady Gaga had been teasing “You and I” for some time, but before the finished version appeared on Born This Way, no one could have guessed what May, Gaga and super producer Mutt Lange could have cooked up. What they released was a funky, smashing ode to reclaiming lost love. Katy Perry hadn’t touched on deeper issues on earlier singles, but when it came to her Teenage Dream feel-good anthem, “Firework,” she went there and it took on a life of its own. With Ester Dean and Stargate working with Perry on the song, it topped the charts and became the fourth in a record-breaking string of #1 hits off that album. Like Perry, Pink gave a voice to the disenfranchised on “F—in’ Perfect” (off her greatest hits collection that dropped in 2010). Working with Max Martin and Shellback on the track, she hit the top of the charts and empowered her fans thanks lyrics like, “You’re f—ing perfect to me.” Who do you think will “pop” at the Grammys this year? Scarlett Johansson Rallies For Obama: ‘2012 Will Not Be Easy’

Actress teams up with Vogue ‘s Anna Wintour for ‘Runway to Win’ fashion fundraiser. By Uptin Saiidi Scarlett Johansson before attending Runway to Win Tuesday night Photo: Alo Ceballos/FilmMagic Scarlett Johansson , a vocal Barack Obama supporter during his first election campaign, lent a hand to the President’s re-election run on Tuesday night. The actress co-hosted a fundraiser event with Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour at a Theory store in New York City, where they also promoted new merchandise. The “Runway to Win” event brought together 23 of the biggest fashion designers, all of whom designed Obama swag to sell in support of the campaign. According to the Huffington Post , Johansson gave a talk in which she ticked off Obama’s various accomplishments in the last three years, from signing the Fair Pay Act to ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. But while the actress has been supportive during the president’s first term, some of Obama’s A-list supporters have been slower to sign on again. The “We Bought a Zoo” star seemed to hopes the fashion project will help reignite hope. “There is so much at stake in this campaign,” Johansson said in a press release. “2012 will not be easy. We have to fight even harder this time around, and that’s where Runway to Win will make a real difference.” The campaign collection includes merchandise, like tote bags, designed by Marc Jacobs, Sean John, Beyonc

Kanye, Jay-Z Battle Young Money For Best Rap Album Grammy

Will Yeezy capitalize on his double nods in the category, or will Lil Wayne or Nicki Minaj take the throne on Sunday night? By Rob Markman Kanye West Photo: Don Arnold/ WireImage Who would’ve ever thought that hip-hop would take it this far? The Notorious B.I.G. posed the question on his 1994 classic “Juicy,” and the 2012 Grammy nominations prove that hip-hop continues to rise to new heights. For the second year in a row, a rap artist is leading in Grammy nods: Last year it was Eminem, this year Kanye West . Yeezy’s seven nods take the cake. Two of West’s nominations come in the hotly contested Best Rap Album category; one for his solo My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and the other for his and Jay-Z ‘s Watch the Throne tag-team LP. Lil Wayne ‘s Tha Carter IV, Nicki Minaj ‘s Pink Friday and Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers round out the category, and while the odds are clearly in the Louis Vuitton Don’s favor, he isn’t exactly a lock. If record sales are any indication, it will be tough to ignore the first-week sales of Wayne’s Carter IV . The approximate 960,000 units Weezy sold in his first week didn’t earn him a platinum plaque right out of the gate, but it stood as one of the biggest hip-hop stories of 2011. CIV has since been certified double platinum by the RIAA, and though some critics panned it, high-powered singles like “6 Foot 7 Foot,” “She Will” and “John” helped cement Wayne’s ninth solo album as a fan-favorite. Just like her Young Money boss, Nicki Minaj reigned throughout the year thanks to Pink Friday. Released at the end of 2010 and anchored by the infectious and inescapable bonus track “Super Bass,” Nicki’s debut LP helped her to penetrate the pop space while still keeping a foot firmly planted in the streets with her “Did It On ‘Em” single. Lupe Fiasco may be the dark horse of the group but considering the Recording Academy’s knack for acknowledging hip-hop with a message, don’t be surprised if the Chicago MC takes home the golden gramophone. Lasers was a commercial success thanks to its radio-friendly sound, but it didn’t sit well with some die-hard fans because it was a departure from Fiasco’s earlier work. Regardless of the LP’s sound bed, Lupe’s message remained potent. His criticism of President Obama on “Words I Never Said” was polarizing and opened up much political debate. Kanye’s MBDTF was highly touted when it dropped in November 2010, but was seemingly eclipsed by the meteoric Watch the Throne collaboration with Jay-Z. Discussing MBDTF ‘s Album of the Year snub , Yeezy blamed himself, saying that he should have spaced his releases out “just a little bit more.” But in the Best Rap Album category, his maddening pace only increases his chances. Missy Elliott And Timbaland To Drop Solo LPs In June

‘We want to do it as a movement,’ Timbo tells MTV News of releasing new material at the same time. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Timbaland Photo: MTV News Timbaland and Missy Elliott make a perfect musical match. Though it’s been a while since we’ve seen the two in full swing, the Virginia duo will join forces once again in a very big way later this year. “Me and Missy are both coming with our albums at the same time, and it will be in June,” Timbo told MTV News in his Miami home February 3. It’s been three years since Timbaland released Shock Value II and seven years since Missy dropped The Cookbook. If all goes according to plan, fans won’t have to wait much longer. “Right now, we’re preparing to get both our videos, our first singles, shot kinda at the same time,” Tim said. “We want to do it as a movement and spontaneously.” Last June, Missy revealed to People magazine she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder Graves’ disease. Initially, it was speculated that Missy’s health was the cause of the huge gap in her discography, though Elliott later issued a statement dismissing that notion. The “Get Ur Freak On” rapper has been putting in plenty of work behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer for Keyshia Cole, Monica and Jazmine Sullivan. She even hooked up with Timbo on Demi Lovato’s “All Night Long” from the pop singer’s 2011 Unbroken album. Missy is also a guest vocalist on J. Cole’s next single, “Nobody’s Perfect,” and is expected to appear in the song’s upcoming video. It all seems like an exciting build to a triumphant return for both artists. “I just don’t want to move too ahead of her and she don’t want to move too ahead of me,” Timbaland said. “So we’re both doing it at the same time.” What do you think of Timbaland and Missy’s plan to drop their new albums at the same time? The Young Money rapper donned her best cheerleader outfit for the Super Bowl halftime show with Madonna on Sunday night, and next week she’ll storm the Grammys — performing her new song “Roman Holiday” — before officially releasing her latest Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded single “Starships.” On Monday, February 13, just a day after the Grammy telecast, Nicki’s “Starships” will premiere on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and make its way to iTunes shortly afterward. Minaj gave fans the first preview of her sophomore album with the single “Roman in Moscow” back in November, followed by “Stupid Hoe” in December. The release of the Hype Williams-directed video for “Stupid Hoe” last month was accompanied by an announcement that her much-anticipated album would be pushed from its original February 14 release date to April 3. “New Album Date: April 3rd. Pink Friday: ROMAN RELOADED,” Minaj wrote to her loyal followers on Twitter. “But have no fear. Tons of surprises before then ;). Love Always, HB.” One of those surprises will come at this year’s Grammy Awards, where Nicki is set to perform a brand-new, unreleased single, “Roman Holiday” (the tune will also appear on Roman Reloaded ). The performance will mark her first time on the Grammy stage, an honor she adds to noms for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for her 2010 debut Pink Friday. Cash Money Records CEO Birdman is among the few who have already heard Minaj’s new album, and he’s given it glowing reviews. “She’s grown so much as an artist. She’s so talented that this sh– is scary,” he told Complex. She really is the female Weezy . Hands down, she bad as a mother—-er. Her talents, skills and what she’s done with her music and the way she is in front of a camera. She’s just so talented to be so young. It’s a brand-new style.
