Casey James Says ‘You’re Definitely Gonna Hear Guitar’ On His Album

The ‘American Idol’ alum hasn’t been signed yet, but he’s ready to record. By James Montgomery Casey James Photo: MTV News During his run on “American Idol,” Casey James was repeatedly lauded for two things: his general hotness and his deft guitar-playing. Guess which one he’s planning to feature on his post-“Idol” debut? “It’s going to be something kinda new and different,” season nine’s second runner-up told MTV News on Wednesday (June 2). “It’s probably going to be a rocky/bluesy/country-type thing. …It’ll be a way for me to do all the things that I love, because there’s no other way for me to go. It won’t be something where you don’t hear guitar, because that’s what I do. You’re definitely gonna hear guitar.” That’s good news for fans of James’ bluesy, deep-fried fretwork. After all, his guitar-playing earned him high praise from both the “Idol” judges and journalists who cover the program ( USA Today called him “the best guitar player the show has seen”), and it would be a shame if it didn’t end up on his debut disc. But for all the accolades his ax-work earned him, James said it took some convincing on his part before “Idol” producers would let him play. “I was really shocked going in, like, I thought, well, I wouldn’t be able to play my guitar at all. And I think it was the second week, I just straight-up told them, ‘This is what I want to do,’ and they were nice enough to let me do it, and I got ripped up for it,” he smiled. “But I think it set a precedent for me as a musician, as an artist, on the show, that this was what I was going to do. And then, later on down the line, that’s exactly what happened. They would say, ‘You know what, why don’t you do a little lead there?’ And I’d be like, ‘Really? OK, I’ll do that!’ ” In the end, it paid off. And though the ninth season of “AI” just wrapped — and despite James has a very busy summer ahead of him on the Idols Live! tour — he’s already thinking about his album. “It’s the whole reason I did the show,” he said. There’s only one slight problem: Unlike fellow finalists Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze , James has yet to ink a record deal with the folks at 19 Recordings or any other label. But that could really change any moment now. “I mean, they could call me right now,” he laughed. “I sat down and talked with some people and, you know, it remains to be seen, but hopefully, yeah, I’ll get a deal and be able to put out a record.” Which season-nine contestant’s album are you most looking forward to? Bret Michaels Returns to the Stage, Teases American Idol Judging Gig

Just five weeks after suffering a brain hemorrhage, Bret Michaels returned to the stage last night in Biloxi, Mississippi. Incredibly, this event itself was NOT the most surprising development of the evening! But, first, a quick recap of the concert: Limping slighty, Bret told the 1,400-person crowd at the Hard Rock Casino:

‘Sex And The City 2’ Wedding Is ‘Thrilling,’ Mario Cantone Says

‘Putting us together really officially makes us a part of the family,’ he tells MTV News of Anthony and Stanford. By Jocelyn Vena Mario Cantone Photo: MTV News What would a “Sex and the City” flick be without a wedding? While Kim Cattrall tricked us into thinking Samantha Jones would get hitched in “Sex and the City 2,” out Thursday, it’s actually onetime enemies Anthony and Stanford who decide to tie the knot this time around. And it’s certainly as fabulous and over-the-top as one would imagine it to be. But it might leave fans wondering: How did those two crazy kids end up together? “If you looked at the last movie, they were kind of setting it up,” Mario Cantone, who plays Anthony, told MTV News at the film’s NYC premiere Monday. “And I also think, you know what it does? It kills two birds with one stone. So putting us together really officially makes us a part of the family — the ‘Sex and the City’ family. “We hated each other,” Cantone continued. “Well, I hated him. But see, it’s not always about what’s on the outside. You look underneath!” The couple were not only joined by all their pals; they also got the one-and-only Liza Minnelli to perform at the reception. “Oh my God! She’s terrific in the movie,” Cantone said. “She sings and dances her ass off. It’s terrific! She’s amazing to watch. You weren’t there to see her nail every take. She was thrilling!” Kristin Davis, who plays Anthony’s bestie, Charlotte, said the wedding gave her the chance to wear her favorite outfit in the flick. “[I loved the] big, black Oscar de la Renta ball gown that I wear to the wedding,” she said. Crystal Bowersox Fans ‘99.9 Percent’ Sure She’ll Win ‘American Idol’

‘She definitely saved her top performances for the end,’ one friend tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Photo: FOX It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Elliston, Ohio’s Crystal Bowersox, who appeared to be losing her season-long lead on “American Idol” as this year’s slow-and-steady dark horse, Lee DeWyze, crept up into contention for the title. But on Tuesday night, Bowersox saved the best for last, pulling off three solid, if not exceptional, performances, as DeWyze, gripped by nerves, appeared to squander his underdog status at the worst time. For friends and supporters of Bowersox, her knockout takes on “Black Velvet” and “Up to the Mountain” were proof positive that the dreadlocked single mom from the hard-hit Northern Ohio town might win this thing. “I’m pretty confident,” said Tim Stahl, owner of the gritty Toledo, Ohio, bar Papa’s Tavern , where Bowersox, 24, got her start as a regular performer when she was 13. “I don’t see any doubt at all. … She definitely saved her top performances for the end.” Though last season’s come-from-behind win by Kris Allen over favorite Adam Lambert still gives him pause, Stahl said Bowersox’s decision to sing Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” practically her signature song, was a wise one. “I’m sure she knew what she was doing when she came out with that,” said Stahl, who has seen Bowersox perform on the low, cramped stage at his bar countless times. “I feel confident, like 99.9 percent, but stranger things have happened.” The bar, which has a painted mural of Bowersox alongside her mentors, Ron Rasberry and Bob May, on the far wall, was so crowded Tuesday night for an “Idol” viewing party that Stahl said you could barely walk through. He expects an equally rowdy, packed house for Wednesday night’s (May 26) two-hour finale. Crystal’s run to the finals has been especially sweet to watch for Dan Kalo, her former principal at Oak Harbor Middle School. “I watched last night, and to be quite honest, Lee had done such a great job, and I thought the song selection that Crystal was given hurt her,” he said. “I knew it had to be the final opportunity for her to prove how great she was, and I don’t think she disappointed anybody.” Kalo is one of the first people to predict that Bowersox was headed for TV fame. Back in 1997, when Crystal was in sixth grade, she won the school’s talent competition for her age group with an acoustic cover of Jewel’s “You Were Meant for Me.” “Kids, you saw her here first at Oak Harbor Junior High. You’ll see her one day on television: Crystal Bowersox,” Kalo can be heard saying on a video of the competition. After watching Tuesday night’s show, he was feeling pretty bullish about his clairvoyant abilities. “That was way pre-‘American idol,’ but the mere fact that just happened still is kind of eerie,” laughed Kalo, who now lives in Florida. “To say that someday I would see her on television was something I guess you’d say to somebody that you think has the potential to be great, but you never know that that could actually come true.” Kalo said it is “extremely gratifying” to see a student like Bowersox, who “has had to work so hard for all her success and was never given anything,” rise up to the edge of potential stardom. “She certainly showed she was the better of the two contestants and proved to everyone that she deserves to be the next American Idol,” he said. “Who would have thought in sixth grade this little girl playing her favorite Jewel song on her guitar would win $45 or whatever it was and … well, the rest is history.” Another person who has watched Bowersox rise from her humble beginnings playing to a handful of people is John Schafer, who often booked her at the Village Idiot bar in Maumee, Ohio. On Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the results would be read, Schafer was feeling very confident. “I think it’s a layup, man, I really do,” he said. “I hate to sound cocky, but I think she was clearly the better voice and has been. I don’t know how anyone could look at it any differently. I don’t see any other way than for her to win.” Who do you think will win the “Idol” crown? Let us know in the comments! Lee DeWyze’s ‘Everybody Hurts’: Behind The ‘American Idol’ Cover

Simon Cowell calls the R.E.M. tune ‘a brilliant choice of song’ for DeWyze. By Eric Ditzian Lee DeWyze performs on “Idol” on May 25 Photo: Fox After a tepid opening performance that left the “American Idol” judges less than impressed, Lee DeWyze bounced back with an inspired take on R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” during Tuesday night’s (May 25) performance finale. It seemed like an odd, potentially sleep-inducing choice when Ryan Seacrest introduced the tune, but the 24-year-old stepped up to the mic with his guitar and immediately made clear that this performance would be different, and far better, than his first one (a second stab at Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” from “Idol Gives Back” week ). There was genuine emotion on his face and in his voice as he sang, “Everybody cries/ And everybody hurts.” The track is from R.E.M.’s 1992 effort, Automatic for the People, which reached as high as #2 on the Billboard albums chart. The melancholy song is perhaps best remembered for the band’s music video, directed by Jake Scott. Filmed on a San Antonio freeway, the video shows the band driving along until they come to a standstill in a massive traffic jam alongside other drivers. Their thoughts begin to flash across the screen as subtitles. “Nobody can see me,” thinks one woman. “They’re going to miss me,” thinks a young boy. It’s depressing stuff, no doubt, but DeWyze’s rendition was an altogether more uplifting take. And the judges dug it, despite the singer’s occasional pitch problems. “What makes you great as a performer is that you’re emotionally accessible and that I can feel every word that you’re saying and that you’re telling a story,” Kara DioGuardi declared. Simon Cowell agreed, albeit with a not insignificant caveat. “I thought that was a brilliant choice of song for you,” he said. “You went a little bit off melody at parts. What I’m feeling from you tonight, Lee, and I understand this, is you’re nervous. You’ve got another song to come, and I think you’ve really got to understand the importance of what this night can do in terms of changing your life.” What did you think of Lee’s “Everybody Hurts”? Lee DeWyze’s Hometown Supporters Confident He’ll Win ‘American Idol’

‘He didn’t go there to lose,’ his former boss tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Lee Dewyze Photo: FOX After boosting Crystal Bowersox for most of the season, Simon Cowell told fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show Tuesday (May 25) that he’s feeling pretty bullish about Lee DeWyze’s prospects for winning “American Idol.” That kind of thinking merely puts him in line with what most of DeWyze’s friends and admirers back in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, have been saying for weeks: Their man is going to bring home the first non-Southern “Idol” title in the show’s history Wednesday night. Pal Mike Corsi met Lee in high school detention nine years ago, and he can lay claim to calling the finale before anyone had ever even heard of DeWyze. “It’s going to come down to him and Crystal,” he said two weeks ago of the man whom he also claimed has prodigious improvisational skills . “But I honestly believe that he is going to win it. I said to him in January when he left, ‘I have a feeling you’re going to go all the way.’ ” Bill Lagattolla, Lee’s former boss at Mt. Prospect Paint , recalled the strong-headed teenager who came into his store eight years to drop off an application and came back every day afterward to ask if there was anything else he could do to snag the job. “He was very persistent but a very likable kid,” said Lagattolla, who has done brisk business selling thousands of brightly colored Lee T-shirts that benefit the music program at the singer’s former high school. “Oh, he will win. He didn’t go there to lose.” When Krista Alvarado thinks about Lee, she pictures the shy, humble teenager sitting on the floor of her preschool classroom playing “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” and “The Wheels on the Bus” for her students. Asked if she thought the then-struggling teen would rise from high school dropout to potential “Idol” superstar, she laughed and said, “Maybe not ‘American Idol,’ but I knew he’d be famous. I absolutely knew he’d be famous.” How sure was she? When preschool graduation rolled around and it was picture time, she asked Lee to sign his photo with her class. She told him: “Because you’re going to be famous one day, and I’m so proud of you, and I know you’re going to do it. And I’ll have your autograph already, and I won’t have to be bugging everyone else!” And for that reason, Alvarado said confidently, “He’s going to win. He deserves to win.” Older sister Sarah DeWyze-Salas, 26, said she felt good about Lee’s chances all along after years of watching her brother drag out his guitar at family functions, in the car, at dinner or anywhere else he could get away with it. “He always said that music was his life and that this was his dream,” she said. “So I knew something would come [from] all of that.” As for whether he will be standing alone tomorrow night, she said, “Yes. All the way. He has to.” But regardless of whether he outlasts Bowersox, Corsi is confident fame won’t change the former paint-store clerk. “His life’s changed already,” Corsi said. “But … he still is the same loving person. He still holds his friends and family dear. He hasn’t changed. He loves Mt. Prospect. He loves the people in his life. And he’s a great guy. He’s probably the most genuine person that ‘Idol’ has ever seen.” Are you rooting for Lee to win it all on Wednesday night? Let us know in the comments! Rihanna Channels Slash In ‘Rockstar 101’ Video

Travis Barker appears in latest clip from Rihanna’s Rated R LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna in her “Rockstar 101” video Photo: Def Jam Burning flames? Smashed guitars? Slash? Well, it’s not quite a Guns N’ Roses video, but Rihanna premiered her “Rockstar 101” clip Tuesday (May 25) in full-on rocker fashion, donning a top hat, shades, and holding an axe to complete her makeover into the legendary guitarist. The video is a mix of goth bondage-esque voyeurism, complete with Rihanna’s gyrating moves and a raging band that features Travis Barker on the drums. “Strut up in the club, posted in the back, feeling so good, looking so bad,” Rihanna sings. “Rocking this skirt, rocking this club, got my middle finger up, I don’t really give a f—.” “Rockstar 101,” featuring Slash, is the fourth single from Rihanna’s recent Rated R LP, following “Russian Roulette,” “Hard” and “Rude Boy.” The song was written and produced by The-Dream and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart; the pair also oversaw “Hard,” which broke into the top 10 of Billboard ‘s Hot 100 singles chart. Although Slash is featured on the track as a performer, the GNR member doesn’t quite appear in the video — at least, not in the flesh. But Rihanna pays homage to him toward the end of the clip, comically sporting a skull-laden top hat, leather jacket, dark glasses and toothpick. Rihanna projects Slash’s swagger and plays the guitar in a way that would make most blush. Rihanna straddles the instrument in one shot and later suggestively points it up from her crotch, a la Prince. Last month, Rihanna performed “Rockstar 101” on “American Idol,” and in March Travis Barker raved about her burgeoning drumming and guitar skills. “She jams! Watch out for her,” Barker later tweeted. Jack Johnson’s To The Sea: Hear It Now On The Leak!

New album forgoes polished production to remind listeners ‘that it’s humans doing it.’ By James Montgomery Jack Johnson Photo: Bradley Kanaris/ Getty Images Jack Johnson’s To the Sea — available to stream right now on MTV’s The Leak — is an album born out of happy accidents. A flubbed chord here, a stray snare snap there — it’s lively and warm and intimate, sounding very much like a band getting together in a room and just playing. Which was precisely the goal, as Johnson told MTV News earlier this year. “With the technology these days, you can look at music instead of listening to it sometimes,” he said. “You can look and say, ‘Oh yeah, see, the bass drum doesn’t line up with the guitar hit there, let’s move that.’ [And] we tried not to do that on this one. Sometimes, when things don’t line up, it actually makes it them better. You listen to old records, when they didn’t have the capability of cutting things together, that’s the magic of it. … It reminds you that it’s humans doing it.” And Sea is very much a human record, full of crackling instrumentation and Johnson’s ruminations on life, love and spirituality. The title track explores “the archetype of the wild man … deep down in the mind, waiting to be discovered.” First single “You and Your Heart” is about the internal struggle between the heart and the brain — “That area you get in sometimes, where you stop trusting your heart and you start thinking too much,” as Johnson put it. And “At or With Me,” well, it’s just a fun, funky tune, recorded live and left untouched. “That’s a really fun track,” Johnson said. “We did it one time, thinking it was just demo-ing. … It was one take, one time, and that’s the tone on the album.” All in all, there’s a whole lot of energy on To the Sea. But why bother reading about it when you can hear the album for yourself? Though it doesn’t hit stores until June 1, you can hear it right now over on The Leak . Consider it an early, and very human, start to your summer. Share your reviews of Jack Johnson’s To the Sea in the comments below. Related Artists Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson Previews New Songs From To the Sea At Free Concert

Johnson took the album title literally, performing for fans at Santa Monica’s famed pier. By Matt Elias Jack Johnson Photo: MTV News SANTA MONICA, California — Jack Johnson took fans to the sea (literally) on Monday night to celebrate the release of his aptly titled new album To the Sea . The free concert was given to show appreciation for fans who took part in a beach cleanup on Saturday in Santa Monica, which was organized by Southern California nonprofit Heal the Bay. Three thousand fans with free tickets covered a large portion of Santa Monica’s iconic pier for the show. An almost equal amount who weren’t able to score tickets lined the beach below with blankets (those blankets coming in very handy on the unseasonably cold night). Prior to the show, the crowd below was treated to a rare opportunity to hear the man of the night and his band’s soundcheck — thanks in part to the open-air stage. In between songs, the troubadour shouted out to those below, generating enthusiastic responses from the growing crowd. Following the soundcheck, Johnson told MTV News how special the rare pre-show audience was. “A lot of times in soundcheck, we end up just not playing a whole song because it’s just us and we’ve heard it enough times,” Johnson said. “But once there’s people listening — even if it’s 10 or 15 — we usually play a whole song because it’s just nicer to listen to. So this time we had what looks like a couple hundred people at least for a soundcheck. But it was fun. We just played a song that we’re not gonna play tonight — might as well use that one.” While fans might think it’s rare to catch Johnson in such an intimate setting, he continues to play smaller stages back home in Hawaii, mostly for his own nonprofit, the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Usually in classroom settings, Johnson embraces the unpredictability of not having his road crew with him to set up a professional sound system (he says it’s usually “just me and the guitar”). And on the eve of the release of his fifth studio album, To the Sea (due June 1), the singer/songwriter shared his philosophy on playing new and for the most part never-heard-before songs during his set. “I think there will be a couple of the new songs, kind of finding that balance. Because I just know from being a music fan and going to shows as well, I like hearing some new stuff, but definitely want to hear a lot of the old ones that you already identify with,” Johnson said. True to his words, later that night Johnson sprinkled some new tunes in with his established crowd favorites. He and his band took the stage shortly after 8 p.m. and jumped right into the lead single from To the Sea, called “You and Your Heart.” Acknowledging a few missed chords, Johnson ended the song by saying, “The reason this show is free is because we haven’t played in a month.” The crowd chuckled with him and it set the tone for the loose and free-flowing show. “If I Had Eyes” was next, followed by the Curious George soundtrack song “Upside Down,” which drew a collective “Aww” from the crowd when Johnson dedicated it “to the little girl with the beanie on her head” who was hoisted on her dad’s shoulders. Next up were a series of pairings that Johnson and the band segued into without pausing. They followed “Flake” with the Steve Miller Band classic “The Joker.” “Do You Remember” went into “Bubbly Toes,” which drew a raucous sing-along on the “la da da da da da’s.” They ended the night’s pairings with the crowd favorite “Inaudible Melodies” and “Good People.” Some of the new songs that made it into the set were “To the Sea,” “From the Clouds,” and “At or With Me.” Highlights of the night included pianist Zach Gill’s efforts to keep the crowd warm by initiating an audience-wide pogo jump, bassist Merlo Podlewski’s rap on “Staple It Together,” and most of all, Johnson’s solo encore of “Better Together,” which brought a hush across the crowd, then a whispered sing-along of the tune. And there was no better way to end the night. Related Artists Jack Johnson

Ronnie James Dio Public Memorial Set For May 30

Metal icon died on May 16 of stomach cancer. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Kyle Anderson Ronnie James Dio Photo: Paul Natkin/WireImage Metal fans from around the globe will get a chance to throw up the devil horns one last time for heavy metal icon Ronnie James Dio at a public memorial slated to take place on May 30 in Los Angeles. According to details posted on the late singer’s official Facebook fan page , the service will take place at 2 p.m. at the Hall of Liberty in the Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills. “This will be a celebration of the life and music of Ronnie James Dio and is open to all of his friends and fans from around the world,” reads the announcement. Dio, remembered as one of metal’s all-time greatest singers, died early Sunday morning after a yearlong battle with stomach cancer. The singer, credited with inventing the ubiquitous two-fingered “devil horns” metal salute, was best known for his work with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, and his own band, Dio, and lauded by friends and musical admirers as a metal icon. Speaking to MTV News on Wednesday, former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash said Dio was one of a kind. “There’s not a lot of people like Ronnie,” he said. “You start to recognize [his] amazing contribution to rock and roll, or to music, however you want to look at it. People have taken it for granted because he’s so good and he’s always been there. He’s so consistent, he’s always putting out albums, he’s been in four different bands, and he’s always been around. And all of a sudden, the reality of him not being there anymore really makes you recognize what an iconic and amazing individual he was.” A few days after Dio’s death, Slash said the reality that the world will be without the singer’s signature operatic wail is beginning to set in. “Ronnie is one of a kind,” he said. “He was phenomenal. We met many times in passing. Not too long ago, we put our hand imprints at the Rock Walk at Guitar Center in Los Angeles together. He was a consummate gentleman — the kind of rock star people should aspire to be, as opposed to being sort of arrogant pricks. Ronnie was very genuine and very considerate and just really nice to everybody.” For those unable to attend the memorial, Dio’s wife, Wendy, has asked that instead of flowers, fans make contributions to the Ronnie James Dio “Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund,” c/o Niji Entertainment Group, 12400 Ventura Blvd. #624, Studio City, CA, 91604.
