Green Day Bring The Power, Phoenix Add The Finesse: Saturday At Lollapalooza

Saturday night’s headliners were a scintillating study of contrasts. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong performs at Lollapalooza on Saturday Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News CHICAGO — Unless you happen to play in one of Perry Farrell’s bands (and that band happens to be Jane’s Addiction), the opportunity to headline Lollapalooza doesn’t come around all that often. So, if you get your shot, you might as well go for it. And that was very much the mindset of both of Saturday’s (August 7) bill-toppers, though, much like Friday night’s Lady Gaga/Strokes face-off , Green Day and Phoenix were a study in contrasts. Both definitely rocked, they just did in very different ways. Green Day, of course, pummeled, powered, and pulled out all the stops during their two-plus hour set, reaching deep into their expansive back catalog and using every crowd-pleasing trick in the rock-band hat. And then they invented a few more stunts just for the sake of it. Seriously, if it weren’t for the city of Chicago’s noise ordinances, they’d probably still be at it. Bottle-blonde Billie Joe Armstrong bounded back and forth across the stage, led the crowd in countless sing-a-longs, pranced, danced, collapsed, rose again, and at one point, played a solo with his guitar behind his head. While standing on one leg. He pulled kids young and old from the crowd–letting them sing choruses (on “East Jesus Nowhere”) or entire songs (“Longview,” which was belted out by a kid who totally, completely killed it), assisting them in stage dives, or fire off water cannons. He shouted “Chicago!” more times than the entire Daley clan combined. He donned a feather boa. He mooned the crowd. He fired off T-shirt cannons and toilet paper guns. And at no point did he appear to even be the slightest bit tired. “They said they’re gonna pull the plug on us at 10 … I told them to kiss my f–king ass, we’ll play for as long as we want,” he shouted at one point. “You paid your hard-earned money to buy a ticket to tonight,” he yelled later in the set. “It is my honor and my privilege to give you the best f—ing show you’ve ever seen in your life.” And judging by the boundless energy displayed by his Green Day mates, he wasn’t the only one feeling this way. Mike Dirnt scowled and strutted, always keeping his bass thuddingly precise. Tre Cool vamped it up on an extended version of the Isley Brother’s “Shout” (while wearing a sun hat, horn-rimmed spectacles and a red brazier, it should be noted), and kept the back beat cracking. At this point, Green Day are a poundingly precise Rock and Roll machine, as evidenced by the covers they effortlessly worked into the set–everything from the opening riffs of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” and the first verse of the Guns ‘N Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to the chorus of the Beatles’ “Hey Jude”–and the sheer spectacle of their show, an eye-popping, ear-splitting series of pyro bursts and fireworks explosions. Oh, and obviously, the songs were pretty terrific too: “21st Century Breakdown” spanned several changes but was always focused and crowd-uniting, “Hitching A Ride” thundered along and eventually broke into a fiery crescendo, “She” was zip-gun speedy, and “Brain Stew/Jaded” started crunchy and static, stretched into a lengthy jam (complete with water/T-shirt cannon interlude), then came rifling home at a breakneck pace. There were a dozen other highlights. Simply put, Green Day know how to put on a rock show. A big, loud, bombastic one. And when they finally closed with “Jesus of Suburbia,” they certainly didn’t need a break … but the crowd might very well have. Meanwhile, on the other side of Grant Park, there was a rock show of a different sort happening. On the one hand, Phoenix aren’t the typical Lollapalooza headliner. For one thing, they are French — as in, extremely French. Their brand of European formalism doesn’t necessarily jive with the freewheeling energy on the grounds at Lolla. Then again, they’re really the ideal headliner for Saturday night. Their jaunty mix of jangly indie rock, easy singalong melodies and groovy, dance-friendly electronic froth sound like the favorite band of one of the characters on Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party record. After a warm day at Lollapalooza, they provided a soothing antidote to the heat and the growing exhaustion among the festival-goers. Their smooth, easy tunes cascaded over Grant Park and engulfed the thousands gathered in a swirl of Euro-disco-rock giddiness. Frontman Thomas Mars seemed genuinely touched by the heavy crowd gathered for their headlining set. They turned up the energy immediately, kicking off the set with “Lisztomania,” the kickoff track from their Grammy-winning album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . Though the clearly committed crowd greeted the group’s older tunes (like “Long Distance Call” and “Everything Is Everything”) warmly, it was the Wolfgang songs that really won the evening. The ubiquitous “1901” surfed its killer synth riff into the ether, while “Lasso” inspired all sorts of manic dance moves among the revelers. It was a fitting end to a funky, groovy day at Lollapalooza. Cut Copy preempted the Phoenix set with a batch of pounding beat science, Spoon brought a classic rock swagger to their deep catalog, AFI super-charged the afternoon with a blast of glammy goth and Against Me! laid out the huge riffs of White Crosses for a refreshing aggro jolt. With 48 hours of Lollapalooza in the books, the energy remains high and the performances continue to deliver in surprising ways. Just probably not at the same level Green Day did. Or Phoenix, too. By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Bieber surprises a band camp in Florida Photo: Gerardo Mora/ Getty Images If you were in the Sanford, Florida, area Thursday (August 5) and heard the screams of hysterical teenagers, don’t fret. It was probably just the passionate yelps of students at Seminole High School, who were granted a surprise show from none other than singer and inducer of mass tween mania, Justin Bieber. The Biebs dropped by Seminole High to present the school with a $5,000 donation from the Grammy Foundation and Best Buy to support music education. The singer strummed the guitar, pounded the drums and chatted with students, who were attending a summer band camp, according to reports . “The students had no idea I was coming, and it was fun to completely surprise them,” Bieber said in a statement . “I was excited about this opportunity to team up with Best Buy and the Grammy Foundation to raise awareness around the important cause of funding music education programs in schools. I talked to students about pursuing their passion in music and encouraging them to keep doing what they’re doing.” Bieber also shared the experience with his more than 4 million Twitter followers, revealing that he battled illness to make the surprise appearance. “I actually got sick in the middle of the show and they wanted to cancel but the show must go on and the fans gave me my second [wind],” Bieber tweeted . The singer added that the energy from his Beliebers, especially the female ones, helped get him through the performance. “Been sick all day…but we are toughing through it. Justin Bieber Charms L.A. Ladies, From Toddlers To Grandmas

The My World Tour brought Bieber fever to the Nokia Theatre Tuesday night. By Kelley L. Carter Justin Bieber performs in Los Angeles on Tuesday Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — The countdown started early in the night for Justin Bieber’s sold-out show at the Nokia Theatre on Tuesday night. Bieber’s young fans screamed and waved multicolored glow sticks in the air, while their parents stuffed cotton balls in their ears, sipped on wine or text messaged, seemingly oblivious to the growing anticipation by their children. When the two large screens on either side of the stage clicked on and announced that it was almost showtime, the decibel level was off the charts. Fans pulled out their cell phones and began taking silly shots of each other, waving their hands in the air, and at times, singing their favorite Bieber songs in unison. When the 16-year-old finally took the stage shortly before 9 p.m., he dropped down from the ceiling in an egg-shaped apparatus. Neon green lasers shot from the stage, and his face popped up on the screens. Bieber spent the next hour rolling through a number of hits — including “Baby,” “One Time,” “Love Me,” “Favorite Girl” and “One Less Lonely Girl” — all tracks that helped to make the Canadian heartthrob a household name. Bieber also sang a little medley of classic hits, including “Wanna Be Starting Something” by Michael Jackson and “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith and Run-DMC. “I’m so glad everyone could make it tonight. I have the best fans in the world,” Bieber said. “I would do anything to make you smile.” Again, the kids screamed, rightly knowing that he would launch into his track, “U Smile.” Bieber made several costume changes, but he always kept a New York Yankees baseball cap on his head, grabbing it while dancing in front of and next to his backup dancers. The contraption that he first dropped down in changed shapes, at one point it turning into a heart that he boarded. It took Bieber into in the air, as he strummed his guitar and smiled down lovingly at his mostly female concert. “I see a lot of beautiful girls in the audience. You know what? I think I need to get a little closer to you,” he said. And as if on cue, fans as young as 3-years-old and those old enough to be their grandparents cried and flailed their hands about, hoping to get closer to him. Have you seen Justin Bieber in concert? ‘American Idol’ Top 10 Begin ‘Beautiful Day’ With ‘Good Morning America’

Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and company strummed and belted through the rain in Central Park on Friday. By Christopher MacAllister Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox perform on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ on Friday Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images With their signs and banners eagerly clutched in their hands, fans marched into Central Park to see “American Idol” season-nine winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox chat with Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos about “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” before two 12-year-old girls competed and a guy who looked like Santa’s older brother competed in an “Idol” trivia quiz. And also to see all of the top 10 Idols perform for the “Good Morning America” Summer Concert Series on Friday (July 9). Crystal was the first one to perform, singing Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” while strumming her guitar, of course. She did the song justice despite the slight spray of rain. Next up was Lee, again with a guitar, awaiting his time to shine amid the continuing showers. The crowd shouted their love for him, as he responded to their makeshift banners, wishing happy birthdays and anniversaries. Asked about the life-changing experience of winning “Idol,” he said it was “important to remember where you came from” and managed to plug the October release of his upcoming album. He then performed “Treat Her Like a Lady” by the Cornelius Brothers, to which the audience reacted with more enthusiasm and excitement. Then all of the top 10 took the stage and the band began the riff for Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.” The guys gave their best for the rousing anthem, before the girls took over with “My Life Would Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson. The rain seemed to bring down the energy of some, Lee in particular, who almost seemed bored at times. But as all 10 sang the song as an ensemble, they gave it a powerful finish. Before the last song, Lee, Andrew Garcia and Michael Lynche began to beat box and rap for the slightly drenched crowd. But instead of capping off the set with another group performance, Lee went solo for his single, “Beautiful Day” — and fans didn’t seem to mind the irony of the bad weather. Actually, as one fan told MTV News, there more than one reason to consider it a beautiful day. “It was great to see the American Idols on stage together, and the rain was nice, as it has been so hot!” Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season 9 Finalists Perform On ‘Good Morning America’ American Idol Season Nine Cast Glam Up For Tour

Playboy Playmates in Guitar Mag of the Day

Here are some pictures of Jayde Nicole, Sara Jean Underwood, Kara Monaco, Kassie Logsdon and Heather Rae Young posing in Guitar magazine, because people who play guitars are into trash like this, it’s like shit is part of their subculture they are trying to be a part of as they listen to Val Halen, Metallica and Guns and Roses like it was 1990 and platinum stripper rocker trash was still considered hot and unattainable… I don’t really understand why Playboy only recruits Jersey Shore looking trailer trash to get naked in their magazines. I always liked playboy back when they had girls who didn’t look like useless strippers in their pictorials, back when it was kinda classy and the tits you’d be jerking off to were tits you always wanted to see, like Suzanne Sommers’ or Jane Fonda’s or some shit, but instead they took this stripper trash road and that is their biggest fucking mistake and the reason they are going broke….seriously…we have seen bitches like this naked far too many time to find them interesting…even though we think every naked bitch is interesting….Playboy…step up your fucking game… Here are the boring pictures of girls who you’d expect to see naked….

Miley Cyrus, Bret Michaels Perform ‘Every Rose’ For ‘Good Morning America’

‘It’s my mom’s favorite song,’ Cyrus says of the Poison classic. By Jocelyn Vena Bret Michaels and Miley Cyrus perform on “Good Morning America” Photo: ABC Miley Cyrus has declared that she Can’t Be Tamed, and neither, apparently, can her devoted fans, who couldn’t keep their excitement contained as they stormed Central Park in New York City to see Cyrus perform several songs for her appearance on “Good Morning America” on Friday (June 18). But, it wasn’t just Cyrus who got the crowd going, she was also joined by her pal and collaborator Bret Michaels . Cyrus, who will also perform Can’t Be Tamed songs for a concert being live-streamed by MTV on Monday, addressed some recent criticism she’s received for her more mature look and sound. “It’s always going to be hard [to grow up in public], because there’s so much stuff you have to get through in order to get to the stuff that’s real,” she explained. “You have to get through all the people that are ‘yes’ people and get to the people that are real. There are people who are negative just to be that way.” Meanwhile, Michaels gave an update on his health , joking that he just really wanted to hit the stage with Cyrus. “For me and I say this again, I feel blessed because I’m one of the 20 percent [to survive]. It was a scary few days. It’s a nice feeling to know I survived,” he said. “I figure I’m losing organs so fast, I’d better get out there really quick.” Then Cyrus did her thing. In super-skinny black jeans, a David Bowie T-shirt, a studded leather jacket and a group of writhing backup dancers, Miley kicked off her set with her new single, “Can’t Be Tamed.” “This record is completely me, completely what I wanted to say,” she said about the album’s sound. “There’s something about the pop rock sound that’s fun to perform live.” Then Cyrus slowed it down and was joined by Michaels to perform her cover of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” which she recorded for her new album. Bret not only lent his guitar skills to the track, but he also sang with her on the song. “It’s my mom’s favorite song, so I got un-grounded by doing this song,” she laughed. “I try and put a touch of my family on each of my albums.” Her final song of the morning was her undeniable fan favorite “Party in the USA,” during which she changed the lyrics about a Jay-Z song to a “Michael song,” perhaps as a nod to the late King of Pop who died a year ago next Friday. Royce Da 5’9" Hopes To ‘Showcase’ His Personality On New Mixtape

‘People listen to me and think I’m always so serious,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of fans’ misperceptions. By Shaheem Reid Royce Da 5’9 Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Bar Exam 3: The Most Interesting Man in the World Headliners : Royce Da 5’9″ and DJ Whoo Kid Key Cameos : Kid Vishis on “Go Hard Pt. 1” and “Pt. 2,” Black Milk and Elzhi on “Real Hip-Hop” and Slaughterhouse on “Beamer, Benz or Bentley (ShadyMegaMix)” Essential Info : Royce Da 5’9″ has been known to indulge in a drink or two at times, but not even he could have guessed that he would be influenced by Dos Equis. The beer’s “Most Interesting Man in the World” ad campaign served as a catalyst for his new mixtape. “I was gonna call it Bar Exam 3: Multiple Personalities, ” Royce explained. “It shows different sides to me. Then I ran across that intro [of ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’] on the Net. I just thought the sh– was hilarious. So it’s like I just switched up at the end. I called it that because I wanted to use those skits. I thought those skits were hilarious. It’s just that cut-and-dried.” 5’9″ kept the comedy going on a record called “I Hate Your Pants.” He sings — yes, sings — about his disdain for trousers that are too tight. “With this mixtape, I was trying to showcase my personality more,” Royce said. “People listen to me and think I’m always so serious, when actually I’m the exact opposite. I’m always joking around and drinking and having fun. I was trying to bring that across in this. I think I nailed that in ‘I Hate Your Pants.’ That’s an ongoing joke in the studio, about skinny jeans. We actually got something on wax that showed that. I did it quick. Two eight-bar verses and the hook. It took me longer to make the beat.” “Taxi Driver” is a conceptual track, on which the Detroit mic king is behind the wheel and alone with his thoughts until he picks up two passengers. “It’s a song I did a long time ago,” he explained. “I wanted to put it on The Bar Exam, because I felt it didn’t get the light it deserved. It’s like I’m driving in a taxi. I got two passengers in the car. One of the passengers is Tupac, one is Biggie. I drop ‘Pac off at the place he got killed. I drop Biggie at the place he got killed. Basically, we lost hip-hop when we lost these two. One of them is named ‘Hip’ and one is named ‘Hop.’ But it’s Biggie and ‘Pac.” Royce even mimics the two legends’ voices and deliveries on the record as he raps from their perspective. On “187 (Response),” Royce disses Saigon, responding to an interview from last year where Sai said Slaughterhouse could not make records. “I don’t have a problem with him,” Royce said of Saigon. “He just sparked a competitive nerve in me. It made me wanna compete. He said, ‘Them n—as can’t write no record.’ If you feel free enough to speak on somebody like that, I feel he should take that on the chin. I don’t feel it should be some kind of backlash. He said something, and I said something. I’m totally prepared to leave it right there.” Royce also said his record aimed at Saigon has nothing to do with Sai’s past problems with Joe Budden. “Joey is my man,” he said. “I make it my business to stay outta the sh– he has going on. Me and Saigon was cool. I was cool with Saigon before I got cool with Joey.” Royce said Slaughterhouse’s signing with Shady Records has been stuck in a web of red tape, but the deal is looking like it should be finalized in a matter of weeks. As for Royce’s solo LP, he’s not sure if that will be in the cards for Shady as well. Green Day Got Proudly ‘Pwned’ At Their Own ‘Rock Band’

‘I couldn’t even finish the song,’ Tre Cool laughs to MTV News. By James Montgomery Green Day Photo: MTV News Through all the “Green Day: Rock Band”-related stories about dye jobs and song selections we’ve written this week, there remains one topic we haven’t explored yet. And, to be honest, it’s a fairly pertinent one: Are the guys in Green Day actually good at playing their game? You would think the answer would be yes, considering they wrote the songs and all. But, oddly, you’d be wrong. “Well I did an interactive thing with some random ‘Rock Band’ players all throughout the world, and I got my ass kicked really bad,” drummer Tre Cool laughed. “I couldn’t even finish the song.” “Tre got pwned,” bassist Mike Dirnt laughed. “I did! I got pwned!” Cool shrugged. “Pwned like a newb.” So while they might not be great at the game, at least the guys in Green Day are all pros when it comes to gamer lingo. But what, exactly, was it about the game that they found so difficult? “For me, it’s really hard. I think I’d rather play the guitar on the game. The drums are really hard,” Cool said. “But what’s cool about the kit that you get is, you can put it on free-play mode and the practice mode, and you’ve got an electric drum set. So it’s kind of cool.” “That’s actually really cool,” Dirnt added. And the electric drum set has an added feature, one “Rock Band” developers probably never even dreamed of: the power to annoy. “You can jam around in your living room and piss off the neighbors,” Cool smiled. “Like I care about pissing off the neighbors.” MTV News is celebrating the release of “Green Day: Rock Band” with a week of special coverage.
