Lady Gaga’s VMA Fashion Was ‘Over-The-Top," Katy Perry Says

‘I love all that kind of symbolism that she had on her dress, and she made a statement,’ singer says of Gaga. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Several days after the VMAs, everyone is still talking about Lady Gaga’s somewhat glam, somewhat bizarre get-ups for the show. With experts pretty much loving Gaga’s Franc Fernandez meat dress , fellow pop star Katy Perry says that with someone like Gaga, it’s about more than just the design: It’s about what she’s trying to say with it. “I think costumes are just a natural extension. I don’t think you can just have the costumes and not have anything else. The costumes are the bells and whistles and bells and whistles can be really fun, but you have to have the spine, and I think that with Gaga, she’s got the spine and she’s got the costume,” Perry told MTV News. “So, it can coexist.” Perry is quick to point out that if you’re a pop artist trying to go over-the-top without saying anything, then you’re not doing it right. “With me, I have the spine and I have the costumes, so we can coexist,” she said. “Some people that are just like, ‘Look at me, I have something on my face or head’ — I don’t want to be specific because I don’t even know what I’m trying to say — they’re just not following through. I like all that theatrical stuff, but at the end of the day, I like to strip it all off and sit down with my guitar and write a song.” With all that in mind, Perry, who looked equally fab at the VMAs , says that she really loved one of Gaga’s VMA looks in particular. “I think her outfits are very Lady Gaga . It’s like so over-the-top,” she said. “I thought the Alexander McQueen outfit was stunning. I was like, “Oh my god!” I love all that kind of symbolism that she had on her dress, and she made a statement with all the people next to her. I like the statement she made.” Related Videos VMA 2010: Lady Gaga’s VMA Moments Related Photos VMA 2010: Lady Gaga Lookbook Related Artists Lady Gaga Katy Perry

Tastebuds.fm – a brand new dating service for music lovers

Tastebuds.fm is a brand new music dating website that matches potential partners based primarily on their tastes in music. It integrates directly with popular Internet music radio site Last.fm, allowing users to plug in their username and immediately populate their profile. There’s also the option to manually input your favourite bands when searching for matches. The site is the brainchild of Julian Keenaghan and Alex Parish, both members of London-based rock band Years Of Rice And Salt. The idea was born when Alex and Julian realised their guitar wielding wasn't having the desired effect on girls. They decided to use their coding skills to build a site where music lovers could find like minded people. While they were confident there was a community of people who would use this kind of service, they didn't bank on how successful Tastebuds.fm would be. Since the launch in June this year the site has amassed over 3,000 members, with hundreds more signing up each week. Check out the site at http://tastebuds.fm added by: azpaz

Lauryn Hill Says She’s ‘Getting Closer’ To Releasing New Album

The singer also praises the crop of ‘young talent’ who are unafraid to be ‘unique and hard-core.’ By Shaheem Reid Lauryn Hill Photo: MTV News Lauryn Hill was feeling jovial on Saturday at Governor’s Island in New York City. One of the main attractions on the lineup, Hill was making her second stop on the Rock the Bells Tour , where we grabbed the opportunity to ask her when she might release her first studio album since 1998. “We’re getting closer,” she said with a chuckle. “We’re getting closer. That’s all I can say.” One thing seems certain when she does drop the follow-up LP: There won’t be many, if any, collaborations. She has too much to express after being mostly gone for more than a decade. “I have respect for what people do,” Hill said. “I also like to hear the eclectics, I like to hear the mixture. There’s a lot of different creative energies out there right now. I respect the different sounds that I’m hearing. It’s been such a long time since I’ve gotten my voice and my ideas [out]. In terms of collaborations, that’s not even something I’ve been thinking about per se. I’m happy that people are still making music. That we still have a platform with which to make music. It’s gonna be interesting to see what the future holds.” When Hill thinks about the current musical landscape, the iconic MC/songstress said she realizes it’s very different from the ’90s, but that there is nothing wrong with that. “It’s a lot going on,” Hill said. “It’s interesting energy. It’s not what it was, it’s different. That doesn’t necessarily means it’s a bad thing — it’s a different thing. Just like any new opportunity, it’s ripe for a lot of different things. You got a lot of young talent out there. Because we don’t necessarily have the same sort of industry complex that used to exist, people don’t always give, I want to say, proper respect to. But they’re doing it in a really kind of unusual, unique and hard-core way. Because the system is not necessarily in place like it used to be.” Are you excited to hear Lauryn is working on new music? Justin Bieber Joined By Miley Cyrus, Usher At New York Show

Footage for his upcoming 3-D movie was shot at Madison Square Garden concert. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Right up until Justin Bieber took the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden, it was an almost typical stop on the My World Tour, complete with hype man and opening sets from Jessica Jarrell and Sean Kingston, who stepped up his game and brought out Iyaz. But once Bieber, who was using his New York stop to film the concert footage for his 3-D movie , hit the stage, it was on, and the crowd’s screams reached a deafening pitch. Dressed in his white and purple tour regalia, he kicked off the show with “Love Me,” complete with karate-friendly dance moves. Any signs that Bieber had fallen ill only two days before weren’t remotely evident. He turned his swag on for “Bigger” and for the cameras filming the show for his upcoming film. “What’s up, New York City? Welcome to my world. We are gonna have a lot of fun tonight. I got a lot of surprises in store for you guys!” he told the crowd before going straight into the fan favorite “U Smile,” the next single he’s expected to release. The catch: He was joined by Boyz II Men for the Motown-flavored track. “Boyz II Men sing it,” he told the legendary R&B act before exchanging high fives. “These people are the ones who made me want to start singing.” And then the group performed their tune “On Bended Knee,” which they dedicated to Bieber’s mom. Bieber reclaimed the show with his song “Runaway Love,” with no Kanye West or Raekwon in sight. “New York City, are you ready to have some fun? I’m filming good. We’re shooting the movie,” he told the crowd before getting into his heart cage and flying over the audience for “Never Let You Go” and “Favorite Girl,” all while playing the guitar. “You know, I guess I was right. There are a lot of people in here!” he proclaimed before bringing a girl onto the stage for “One Less Lonely Girl.” Bieber was then ready to bring out the big guns. Usher would be the next special guest of the night, setting the party off during Bieber’s rendition of “Somebody to Love,” giving the pop sensation a big hug before leaving the stage. But Usher was only the first of the super superstars. Teen queen and 3-D movie vet Miley Cyrus then joined Bieber onstage as he slowed things down a bit for “Overboard.” “I got to tell you something,” Bieber said. “My motto to live by, there’s gonna be times in your life when people tell you you can’t do something. This is what I tell ’em: ‘Never Say Never.’ ” And as rumored, Jaden Smith took the stage to rap his heart out to one very excited crowd during the track. Left alone again, during “Up” Bieber flew over the stage in a cage and every girl went nuts. And after the crowd was reminded to make some noise, Bieber showed his fans how much he loves them by singing “One Time” followed by “That Should Be Me.” “It’s gonna get crazy in here! You ready to get crazy?” he asked the crowd, which pretty much had been getting crazy all night. Then Sean Kingston hit the stage with Biebs for their collabo, “Eenie Meenie.” Soon the crowd was instructed to light up the room by waving their cell phones while Bieber sang “Down to Earth,” during which he played a white baby-grand piano. Blowing kisses to the crowd, he departed the stage before his encore. “I heard you screaming, so I thought I’d come back out here. I want to thank everyone. Madison Square Garden is a big deal for me … and I’m really blessed,” he said. “So I want to say thank you! Anyways, let’s do another song!” He closed out the night with his megahit “Baby” and was joined by Ludacris and lots of fireworks. The MSG show proved that when Bieber asks you to show up for his massively fun 3-D movie taping, you show up. Lindsay Lohan Could Be Released From Rehab Early

UCLA Medical Center may recommend her release to an out-patient program as early as Friday, according to some reports. By James Montgomery Lindsay Lohan Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan’s court-ordered 90-day stint in a rehabilitation facility may be coming to an end sooner than anyone expected. In an interview with RadarOnline.com , Danette Meyers, the prosecutor in Lohan’s case, said that the staff at the UCLA Medical Center where the actress is being treated are considering recommending that she be released early from the facility. “My understanding from conversations with [Lohan’s attorney] Shawn Chapman Holley is that Miss Lohan could be released early,” Meyers said. “It is looking as if that is what the health-care professionals are going to recommend. … How much earlier she could me released, I’m unsure of at this point.” The Associated Press reported that Lohan could be released as early as Friday (August 13), citing a spokesperson at the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office who said that the actress’ program might be “modified,” meaning that she could switch from an in-patient program to an out-patient program. Lohan checked into the rehab center on August 2, after serving 13 days of a three-month sentence in Los Angeles county jail. She was originally set to begin her program at the Morningside Recovery center in Newport Beach, California, but the judge in her case, Marsha Revel, ordered a last-minute switch to the UCLA facility for what were described as security reasons. (Earlier this week Revel removed herself from the case.) And though Revel ordered Lohan to complete a 90-day stint at the treatment center, Meyers said that the District Attorney’s office will follow the recommendation of the UCLA staff. “I will follow what the health care professionals advise,” Meyers told Radar. “That could involve follow-up treatment for Miss Lohan, however, it is my understanding that it is looking like the health care professionals will be recommending that she be released earlier than the 90 days Judge Revel previously ordered.” Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Rihanna Dazzles At Sold-Out New York City Show

Ke$ha gets Last Girl On Earth party started at Madison Square Garden, as Rih powers through her numerous hits. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna performs at Madison Square Garden on Thursday Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage New York — Before Rihanna came onboard for the Last Girl On Earth tour at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, Ke$ha, completely covered in glitter, got her personal party started with her club banger “Blah Blah Blah.” “I cannot believe I am playing a show at the f—ing Garden. Holy sh– balls,” she screamed to the crowd midway through the song. “Are you guys having a dance party?” she later asked the excited crowd. Ke$ha’s set was much like she is: sparkly, glittery, a little messy, but, overall, a good time. She played all her hits, including “Take It Off,” “Your Love Is My Drug” and the song that got all of MSG dancing, “Tik Tok.” While the fans were tickled with delight for Ke$ha’s set, they really went nuts when Rihanna emerged onstage in a billowing black dress, with glowing lights inlaid into it. The star was ready to share with the audience her “dreams and nightmares,” as a projected video explained. The searing guitar of “Russian Roulette” welcomed the red-headed singer to the room before she belted out the ballad and kicked the show off. After a quick change into a blush-colored, shimmering body suit, she went right into her crowd-pleaser “Hard,” during which she very proudly rode her own baby-pink military tank. During “Disturbia,” Rihanna embraced her inner Goth, thanks to dancers dressed as crow-like figures on stilts. After a short intermission, Rihanna declared her “Rockstar” status and played a little air guitar in a latex bodysuit and thigh-high boots. “Rude Boy” brought out the sassy and sexy Rihanna fans have come to love. “Is New York City in the house?” she asked before she sang a medley of “Love the Way You Lie” and “Airplanes,” and then transitioned into “Hate That I Love You.” “I can’t hear you New York! Anybody out there ever been in love?” she asked. For “Rehab,” she lounged sexily on a chaise. Things got spicy when Rihanna, flanked by two dancers doing saucy acrobatics, sang her Spanish-tinged “Te Amo.” Then, dressed in an all-white “bandage” bodysuit, she kicked it old-school with her jam, “Don’t Stop the Music,” throwing a dance party inside of a large cube onstage. After displaying her guitar skills earlier in the night, Rihanna played some drums before performing a rock-influenced version of “SOS.” She then addressed the crowd: “Thanks, all of you who bought a ticket tonight to come see me. I’m at Madison Square Garden and thanks to you guys, we sold out Madison Square Garden — thank you so much.” Then she sang “Take a Bow” before, well, taking a bow. She kicked off an encore with “Wait Your Turn,” in sparkly, knee-high boots, a matching newsboy cap, bra and spandex shorts. Rihanna played her second medley of the evening, combining party jams like “Live Your Life” and “Run This Town.” But she ended the night on her biggest hit, “Umbrella,” and in a dizzying sea of confetti, with fans singing along, she told the crowd, “Thank you so much.” The show not only displayed her vocal abilities, but also her unabashed performance style; her world is part “Mad Max,” part “Twilight” and part OK Computer — and all Rihanna. What Is ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ All About?

You’ve seen the colorful and wacky ads, but they might have left you wondering: Who is Scott Pilgrim? By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” Photo: Universal Pictures Those who have encountered Universal’s creative and very colorful marketing campaign for the upcoming “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” movie might be either intrigued or perplexed by the zany high-action trailers or the larger-than-life billboards (featuring either star Michael Cera shredding the guitar or the more dubious “Exes by the numbers” shot). Either way, apart from the film’s stellar cast and excellent tagline — “An epic of epic epicness” — curious moviegoers might be wondering: Who the heck is Scott Pilgrim? And what is this movie about? Well we here at MTV News are more than equipped to help answer those questions and more. Kicking off a week of Pilgrim-pegged coverage, we bring you a handy primer of the unlikely hero, courtesy of director Edgar Wright (“Sean of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”).To begin with, he says it’s all about love. “It’s essentially a love story — or a love triangle even — about a young man, Scott Pilgrim,” Wright told MTV News when he stopped by our live-stream show at Comic-Con recently. “[It’s] basically the ups and downs of his love life, filtered through kung fu and video games and all sorts of insane action.” Those ups and downs revolve around Pilgrim fighting for the love of Ramona (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) — we’re talking literal fighting here. Before Pilgrim and Ramona can be together, he must defeat her seven evil exes. Wright said it’s like a cartoon/ video game/ sugar-cereal cocktail. “Brian Lee O’Malley, who wrote the books, once described the character Scott Pilgrim as the hero of a movie inside his own head,” Wright said. “This essentially is the movie, so it’s kind of like a big daydream for people who’ve been brought up on Saturday morning cartoons, video games and too much sugary product.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
