Chuck Berry Collapses on Stage

Chuck Berry gave a major scare to concert-goers in Chicago last night. About one hour into his performance at the Congress Theater, the rock legend slumped over his keyboard and then fell to the stage. He did not move for several minutes, according to The Chicago Sun-Tribune . Chuck Berry – Johnny B. Goode (Live) An ambulance was called to scene, as EMTs gave the 84-year old a check-up. However, Berry refused significant treatment and actually returned to the stage after 20 minutes. He tuned up his guitar and attempted a song before telling the audience he had no strength. The Johnny B. Goode crooner had played to New Year’s Eve shows on Friday night before flying into Chicago to perform yesterday. Let’s hope this incident does not result in any serious condition.

Kanye West, Robyn And More: 20 Best Albums Of 2010

In a truly great year for music, Bigger Than the Sound narrows it down to records by Vampire Weekend, Rick Ross and more. By James Montgomery Bigger Than The Sound’s Best Albums of 2010 Photo: MTV News As we close the book on 2010, one thing becomes apparent: It may very well have been the best year for music in a long, long time. Major-label artists went insane, indie-rock acts topped the Billboard albums chart, and Kanye just kept being Kanye. The end result was 12 months positively brimming with excellent albums, to the point where making a list of the 20 best was darn-near impossible. Still, I tried. It’s my job, after all. So here are my picks for the 20 Best Albums of 2010. Rock, hip-hop, pop and electro records — from artists big and small — that managed to stick with me through the entire year, which was no small feat. Looking at it now, there are at least a half-dozen other albums I could’ve included. It really was that good of a year. That said, I’m sure I left a few off my list, so I’m counting on you to remind me of anything I might have missed. Let me know in the comments below, and here’s to a truly great 2010. 20. Linkin Park, A Thousand Suns The year’s most ambitious major-label rock album was also the most controversial, an icy, chilling listen that alternately thrilled and thinned LP’s substantial fanbase with its vast swaths of sonic sprawl (and overall lack of guitar solos). A Thousand Suns may be Linkin Park’s Kid A or it may just be a colossal misstep, but either way, there’s no denying the dense, dark power it packs. 19. Villagers, Becoming a Jackal The similarities between Conor O’Brien and Conor Oberst go a lot deeper than just a few letters, a pair of dewdrop eyes and a general lack of height. For proof, I present Becoming a Jackal, an expansive, haunting and largely self-produced debut that rivals Oberst’s Lifted … in terms of ambition, scope and sonic palette. The potential on display here is truly staggering, and I can’t wait to hear what he does next. So long as it’s not Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. 18. The Black Keys, Brothers An unlikely — though well-deserved — breakout for Akron, Ohio’s hardest-working blues hammers, Brothers bears the fruit of everything that came before it (the team-ups with Danger Mouse and Dame Dash, frontman Dan Auerbach’s solo album) and boils it down into a staggering, swaggering mash. The tunes are raw and ribbed, and there’s a snarling — dare I say sexual — streak that runs through them all. Required nocturnal listening, even during the day. 17. My Chemical Romance, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys It’s not a concept album; rather, it’s an “allegory” for the sad state of the music industry, a heat-seeking “missile” aimed at the barely fluttering heart of rock and roll. In short: It’s a positively vital album. On Danger Days, MCR are out to save the world, and they do it by ditching the theatrics (and Liza Minnelli cameos), reinventing themselves as dusty, DayGlo outlaws and harnessing the sheer power of rock. It may seem silly, but it’s also a battle someone needs to fight. 16. Beach House, Teen Dream Forget Katy Perry; Baltimore’s Beach House wrote 2010’s best soundtrack to teenage melodrama. Teen Dream is full of gauzy harmonies, sun-dappled guitars, swoony histrionics and songs like “Zebra” and “Walk in the Park” that just keep opening up, until they gently burn out and fade away. I’d like to hear them take on “California Gurls” next. 15. Eminem, Recovery Three million Eminem fans can’t be wrong. There’s a reason Recovery is the best-selling album released in 2010, one that has as much to do with our love of comeback stories as it does the undiluted strength of Eminem himself, who, clean and sober for the first time in years, lets it rip, tackling subjects both old (celebs) and new (himself) with a renewed vigor and venom. Shoot, at one point he even manages to work “antidisestablishmentarianism” into the mix. When he raps “I am the American Dream,” he’s not boasting; he’s just telling the truth. After all, he’s been to the bottom, and with Recovery, he’s pulled himself back up to the top by his bootstraps. 14. Deerhunter, Halcyon Digest A haunting (and haunted) recollection of the claustrophobic past and the agoraphobic present, Halcyon Digest is Deerhunter at their most woozy, weary and wispy, which is to say it’s also them operating at the absolute peak of their abilities. An album brimming with ideas and gauzy expanses, vespertine ghosts and floating embers, Halcyon Digest is the musical equivalent of prying open the attic and feeling the warm gust of dusty breath that greets you. Sometimes it comforts, but most of the time it just gives you chills. 13. Rick Ross, Teflon Don Big Meech. Larry Hoover. And about a million other characters, both real and imagined. Teflon Don is Ross’ most thrilling listen, alternating between blunt-force braggadocio ( “B.M.F.” ) and silk-suited swagger (the flossy, glossy “Super High” ) with a deftness that belies his general ginormitude. You can debate the authenticity of his words, but you cannot challenge his storytelling abilities. Hollywood doesn’t make movies this big, let alone Miami. 12. Sleigh Bells, Treats Sounds like: cheerleader camp, power tools f—ing, the “level-up” music on any NES game (circa 1988), a really sh—y Sanyo boom box, double Dutch, hyperspace, hellfire, hurricanes, a more polite Mot

Heart, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Rock ‘VH1 Divas’

Acclaimed duo team up with newcomers for ‘Crazy on You.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Grace Potter Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Decades of rocking out have not faded Heart’s spark. The duo shut things down at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” when they played their breakout 1976 single “Crazy on You.” This time, the ladies got some back up from relative newbies Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, with Potter splitting vocal duties with Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson. Nancy Wilson kicked off the set with a nimble solo that scored excited cheers from the soldiers. The screams reached a fever pitch when the bass line from “Crazy” rattled in the speakers, and the service members went wild. Sporting a long dark coat with a generous silver pendant dangling from her neck, Ann helmed the first verse before strutting down the runway to the center of the crowd for the chorus. Potter, who was manning the keys, chimed in for the second verse, later picking up her mic and meeting Ann in the middle of the stage. Although she wasn’t center stage, Nancy still commanded attention, leaping in the air as she clutched her guitar. Potter and Ann closed out the performance by belting the last notes in unison. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) Potter and crew also got a chance to run the stage solo. After an introduction from “Jersey Shore” residents Snooki and The Situation , the band cranked out their heady single “Paris (Ooh La La).” Despite her shimmery cocktail dress, Potter looked every bit the vintage rock bad girl, strumming her guitar, whipping her hair and wailing like she’s been at this since forever. The bassist and another guitarist plucked fiery solos, and Potter finished the song at the edge of stage, belting directly to the enthused service members. After a few final whips of her mane, Potter wrapped up the song with a sultry grin and strutted back toward her band. The ladies added some rock-and-roll flair to a night packed with pop hitmakers like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Keri Hilson. Grammy Awards 2011: Full List of Nominations

In a sign of changing times, and of a changing Eminem, his 10 nominations for the 2011 Grammy Awards were not controversial, but predictable and respected. The rapper is nominated for album of the year along with nine honors, leading the entire music industry. Bruno Mars earned an impressive seven nods. Other top nominees included Lady Antebellum, Jay-Z and Lady Gaga, who were all nominated for six. Lady Gaga also was nominated for album of the year. Country trio Lady Antebellum was rewarded for its huge crossover successes, earning nominations for album of the year, record of the year and song of the year. Justin Bieber, astoundingly, is up for Best New Artist. “It feels amazing. I can’t believe I’m in this position. Thank you,” he said. “I don’t know what to say.” Other nominees for record of the year included Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ anthem for NYC, “Empire State of Mind.” But not everyone got the love they expected. Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” was a huge hit but shut out of the record and song of the year (Katy’s Teenage Dream was nominated for album of the year). The evening’s biggest snub may belong to Ke$ha. The party girl singer had a top-selling debut and several hits, but was not nominated for any awards. On the flip side, she cannot sing, so you can sort of see it. Anyway, follow the jump for the full list of nominees for the 2011 Grammy Awards … GENERAL Album Of The Year The Suburbs — Arcade Fire Recovery — Eminem Need You Now — Lady Antebellum The Fame Monster — Lady Gaga Teenage Dream — Katy Perry Record Of The Year “Nothin’ On You” — B.o.B Featuring Bruno Mars “Love The Way You Lie” — Eminem Featuring Rihanna “…. My Chemical Romance Celebrate Danger Days’ Release Live From L.A.

Album-release concert will stream live on MTV.com starting at 10 p.m. ET tonight! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero and Gerard Way Photo: MTV News HOLLYWOOD — My Chemical Romance went to the brink and back to make their new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. So, as you can probably imagine, on Monday (November 22) — the day Killjoys hit stores — they were in the mood to celebrate. And how did they go about doing that? By buying their album, of course. “Me and Mikey [Way] went and bought it earlier today,” guitarist Frank Iero laughed. “It’s kind of a tradition.” And with their very own copies of the album in hand, MCR headed over to the House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard, where they’ll throw a rather raucous album-release party — they set up a carnival and everything — and play a sold-out show for their fanatical MCRmy. (You can watch it too: My Chemical Romance’s “Live From L.A.: Killjoys Make Some Noise” will stream live on MTV.com beginning at 10 p.m. ET.) Outside the building, the mood was already electric, as fans lined up around the block to rush the stage. And inside, the mood was about the same: Guitar techs mashed out chords, stage hands hoisted MCR’s massive “Killjoys” American flag to the rafters, and the guys in the band, well, they were practically buzzing with excitement. They’ve already tested Danger Days out on audiences in Europe and the U.K., but on Monday night, they’ll debut the songs for fans here in the States. And they couldn’t wait to get up on the stage and let it rip. “Usually, there’s an awkward period right before you release a new record … but on this record, or at least these tours, there’s been no awkwardness,” Iero said. “It feels like the material has a place, and there’s an innate feeling where it’s like, ‘Man, it feels like I’ve known this all along.’ ” It’s a feeling MCR haven’t had in a while. They’ve made it through the hard part, and now, rejuvenated by a brand-new album and a renewed sense of purpose, they’re ready to share that feeling with their fans. “It really feels like freedom. I feel like a totally different individual up there, I feel like I’m really myself,” frontman Gerard Way beamed. “I feel like I don’t have a giant sandbag on my back. I feel like, it’s like pulling a mask [off] and showing somebody who you really are. It’s like getting rid of your secret identity.” My Chemical Romance’s “Live From LA: Killjoys Make Some Noise” will stream live on MTV.com beginning at 10 p.m. ET. Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Ke$ha Proclaims ‘We R Who We R’ At AMAs

Ke$ha destroys hate with her American Music Awards performance. By Jocelyn Vena Ke$ha performs at the 2010 American Music Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Whirring sirens and post-apocalyptic stage design certainly set the tone for Ke$ha’s energetic American Music Awards performance on Sunday (November 21). Surrounded by keyboards, Ke$ha kicked it all off in a glowing robot helmet and began her Animal track, “Take It Off.” Soon she was surrounded by dancers, some of whom broke through mirrors to join the singer on the stage as she transitioned into her Cannibal track “We R Who We R.” For the performance, Ke$ha let her hair down and graced the stage in a mirrored bodysuit and leather jacket. She danced and gyrated her way through the track off her latest release, out this week. When she wasn’t dancing, she played a white guitar as confetti fell from the ceiling toward the song’s synth filled and Auto-Tuned finale. As the song wrapped, she turned the guitar around and revealed that it said “hate” with a slash through it. She destroyed the guitar as sparks flew from behind her. “This year has been carnivorous and life-changing. I have my rowdy, gorgeous fans to thank for taking me on the ride of a lifetime,” she said in a statement. “My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing,” she said of the new album. “The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgment and be themselves unapologetically. It’s the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don’t like it — bite me.” What did you think of Ke$ha’s AMA Performance? Michaela Wallace Interview: A Chat with Justin Bieber’s Girlfriend*

(* Not really.) I love Justin Bieber because he has great music that I can relate to, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s really hot! Michaela Wallace is certainly not the only 14-year old with this opinion. But she is the only 14-year old with a song titled ” Justin Bieber’s Girlfriend ,” one with a video that has gone viral and turned Wallace into an online sensation. The young singer spoke to Celebuzz this week about her single and her hopes for a successful music career. Might we have a female version of Justin on our hands? How long has been involved with music? I have been singing as long as I can remember. Music has always been a passion of mine and part of my life. In church, at school or just on a regular day when I disappear into my room for some one-on-one time with my guitar. I have been playing the piano since I seven years old and playing the guitar since I was ten. Does she have any special Justin Bieber concert memories? Yes! Before the concert in Nashville, I got to go backstage and play Xbox Kinect with Justin. The concert was AWESOME! It really was a night I’ll never forget. Her EP is currently available via iTunes. What are her next plans? I don’t really have any plans right now, but I look forward to writing and recording more music and who knows where it will take me!
