One Direction Vie For Your Battle Of The Boy Bands Vote

Round one is in full swing. Can these Brits go all the way? By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The Battle of the Boy Bands is on, and that means fans can vote now on which of the 32 contenders can rise to the top and win the honor and distinction of being the fan-voted Best Boy Band of All Time. With so many bands in the running, MTV News caught up with the guys from One Direction, who weighed in on their chances of going all the way. But before the guys explain why you should vote for them, we have some facts about the fivesome that may help you decide if they’re your ultimate boy band in the battle: Highest Chart Achievement The guys broke a record with their debut album, Up All Night, when they released it in the U.S. last month. Selling 176,000 copies, the band became the first British group to have their debut album enter the chart at #1. Standout Video Their sunny, beachy clip for “What Makes You Beautiful” is their biggest entry into the world of music videos so far and certainly sets the tone for the five fun-loving lads. The Brits definitely won over American girls with the video’s SoCal vibe. Defining Tune The guys have won the hearts of teen girls across our great land thanks to the feel-good anthem “What Makes You Beautiful,” about loving a girl who doesn’t know how beautiful she really is. Debut Album Up All Night dropped internationally in November 2011, and just like its chart success here in the States, it sold big, debuting at #2 with 138,631 copies in the U.K., which was enough to give it the highest sales for a #2 album in the U.K. for 2011. Biggest Competition Mostly the guys from the Wanted, who are the bad-boy answer to One Direction group of nice guys. So why do One Direction think they should win our Battle of the Boy Bands? “You should vote for us to be the ultimate boy band if you like us,” Liam Payne said, with Louis Tomlinson adding, “If you like our music, then feel free to vote for us as the ultimate boy band. We’re just us.” Harry Styles had this final bit of advice: “We like to have a lot of fun.” Voting in round one of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands is now open and runs until noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates! One Direction Fueled By ‘Adrenaline Rush’ On ‘SNL’

Boy band opens up to MTV News about their debut appearance on the NBC sketch comedy show. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — One Direction knocked a major milestone off their bucket list on Saturday night when the guys took the famed stage of “Saturday Night Live” to perform. It was the first time anything resembling a boy band played the show since Valentine’s Day 2009 when the Jonas Brothers were the show’s musical guests. For a band whose chart-topping album is called Up All Night, it wasn’t difficult for the guys to spend the night wooing fans and non-One Directioners alike with their tracks “One Thing” and “What Makes You Beautiful.” The appearance proves that the guys have truly been embraced by the American public. MTV News was on set with the guys days before their episode aired and got a sneak peek at what the fivesome would be up to come show night. In addition to crooning their way into sleepless Americans’ hearts, they also got to shimmy their way through a talk-show-themed skit with host and “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara. They played the actress’ five kids, who learn that their father is sleeping with her incarcerated mother, whom she just met for the first time. “I think a lot of it is gonna be a big adrenaline rush,” group member Harry Styles told us during rehearsals. “The show’s so big over here. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun and I think we’re gonna have as much fun with it as we can.” Niall Horan noted that the guys loved appearing on the show because they really do enjoy goofing around. “This is our kind of show,” Horan told us on set, in between rehearsals and photo shoots. “You know, we like to have a bit of a laugh. This is our perfect kind of show [and] we get involved as much as we can.” What did you think of One Direction’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live”? Tell us in the comments! Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Film Inspired By Madonna

Perry says Madge’s ‘Truth or Dare’ is ‘amazing, because it caught her at a time when she was a bit more vulnerable.’ By James Dinh Katy Perry in the “Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D” trailer Photo: Paramount Much like her pop-star peers, Katy Perry cites Madonna as a big influence, especially on her “Part of Me” 3-D concert movie , which hits theaters July 5, which was partially inspired by the Queen of Pop’s 1991 film “Truth or Dare.” In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, the always-colorful starlet spoke about her upcoming big-screen adventure and how “Truth or Dare” led to its creation. “Madonna is everything to me, and that movie is amazing, because it caught her at a time when she was a bit more vulnerable,” Perry said of the film, which chronicled the icon’s Blond Ambition Tour. “I wanted to do that too, to capture a snapshot of who I am now so that I can remind myself what I’ve lost if I ever do become totally jaded.” The topics covered in “Part of Me” include the singer’s strict, religious upbringing, being dropped from her label early in her career and her candy-coated California Dreams Tour. Perry, who spent much of 2011 and early 2012 on the trek, explained that her interest in documenting her life began even before the tour started. “When we started to book these really big venues, I felt like I was going all in,” she said. “And I figured that by the end of it, I’d be bankrupt, or else I’d look like the smartest music businesswoman of my age, and I thought either outcome would be interesting.” More importantly, the chart-topper wanted the general public to see how the Katy Perry machine really works. On Tuesday, the trailer for the anticipated flick surfaced , appeasing Katy Cats for the time being. In the two-minute preview, Katy’s rise to stardom remains a key theme of the film as flashback footage and photos of the singer’s younger days is shown. Are you excited for Katy’s concert movie? One Direction List Justin Timberlake As ‘SNL’ Favorite

‘This is our kind of show,’ Niall Horan tells MTV News in between rehearsals for band’s appearance on show. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: MTV News New York — Live from New York, it’s One Direction ! The British boy banders are set to storm the stage in Studio 8H Saturday night when “Saturday Night Live” goes live with “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara as host. While viewers will have to shuffle their way through all those accents, One Directioners will be tuning in to see what the mop-topped fivesome will do. MTV News was on hand as the guys, who recently topped the charts with their U.S. debut album, Up All Night, were rehearsing and shooting promos for “SNL” with Vergara for their big late-night debut . “This is our kind of show,” Niall Horan told us on set, in between rehearsals and photo shoots. “You know, we like to have a bit of a laugh. This is our perfect kind of show [and] we get involved as much as we can.” Does that mean the guys might turn up in a skit? Well, fans will have to tune in to find out. “[Fans should expect] just us having a lot of fun on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ ” Liam Payne said before adding, “We might be making an appearance after performing as well. Who knows?” So are the guys funny? Harry Styles joked, “We think we are,” with Payne continuing, “We’re just those guys who think we’re funny.” With the possibility that the guys might be appearing on the show in a skit, they listed off some of their favorite bits from years past. Making the list? A rapping Natalie Portman, for one. “I like all the stuff Justin Timberlake’s done,” Zayn Malik added. What stands as Styles’ favorite? “I like the Beyonc

98 Degrees Reuniting: Which Other Boy Bands Should Follow Suit?

O-Town, ‘NSYNC make our list of boy bands that should get back together. By Jocelyn Vena 98 Degrees in 1999 Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images It’s about to get 98 Degrees and hotter in the boy-band bonanza. Nick Lachey’s old group is rumored to be getting back together to launch a summer tour. Sources tell Rumorfix that the band, which has been on a decade-long hiatus, is about to announce a 15-city trek set to take place in July and August. A formal announcement should be made in the next week. One source told the site that the tour would serve as a thank-you to the band’s fans. Rumors of a reunion kicked off on Wednesday, when the band’s website got a face-lift that includes a spanking new logo and a Twitter feed with the guys’ official pages scrolling through the homepage. A rep for the band had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. Given all the love boy bands are getting these days ( see One Direction and the Wanted ), there are still some that might want to capitalize on the mania sweeping the world. Here are MTV News’ picks for the groups we’d love to see get back together. O-Town O-Town was the product of the reality show “Making the Band.” Once managed by imprisoned boy-band impresario Lou Pearlman, the guys managed to put their reality-show pedigree behind them and launched a short-lived, successful run that included hits like the chart-topping “Liquid Dreams.” ‘NSYNC This would be the gold-star reunion. ‘NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys were the two boy bands of the late-’90s revival that reached mega heights of fame and success. Several albums into their career, there appeared to be no stopping Justin Timberlake and the boys. But in 2002, they went on a “temporary hiatus” and have never looked back. Westlife Westlife plan to break up later this year after they wrap up their 2012 tour. But now seems like the right time to keep it going a little bit longer. Given America’s love for boy bands that hail from the U.K., Westlife, who found fame under the guidance of Simon Cowell and serenaded ladies with tracks like “Swear It Again,” might just want to stick around and ride out this latest wave of boy-band love. Which boy band would you love to see get back together? Tell us in the comments!

The Wanted Keeping U.S. Debut Album ‘Upbeat’

New single, ‘Chasing the Sun,’ is in ‘same vein as ‘Glad You Came,’ ‘ Tom Parker tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway The Wanted Photo: MTV News The Wanted will officially drop their U.S. debut album next month. They’ve been busy in the studio working on tracks to follow up their smash single, “Glad You Came.” And with so much enthusiasm coursing through America for boy bands , the guys are looking forward to launching this next phase in their careers. “You know, I think from the start when we were in the U.K. we got our first single, which was ‘All Time Low,’ and it set itself up,” Tom Parker told MTV News about the band’s control over their music. “And we all agree on a certain sound and ‘Glad You Came’ was probably as [far as] we went in terms of difference in sound, but we all kind of come to an agreement to keep it upbeat, usually.” Parker adds that when they do stray from that sound it doesn’t always work out. “We did a ballad and it wasn’t that great, if I’m honest with you,” he said. “We’ve got a new one called ‘Chasing the Sun,’ which is gonna go out to radio soon, so look out for it. It’s in the same vein as ‘Glad You Came’; it’s upbeat.” Now that they are knee-deep in getting their U.S. debut together, Jay McGuiness explains that despite the size of the group, the guys make decisions pretty easily. “We’re all pretty laid-back in coming to a decision that we all agree with,” he said. “We’re not gonna lie: Two years ago we were bitches to the record label, but now we’ve grown enough. We know what we’re doing now. We’re enjoying ourselves.” And that means that they are aiming to make something that will get American audiences pumped. Siva Kaneswaran added, “To be in the U.S. is amazing, but just as long as we go out there and be ourselves and the U.S. takes us as we are, we’re just coming over here to have a laugh.”

Jonas Brothers Promise ‘Anything Goes’ On New Album

‘We’re saying, ‘Let’s just vibe out, write a million songs and see what we’re feeling most,’ Nick Jonas tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas of Jonas Brothers Photo: El Universal It’s on! The Jonas Brothers promised they’d be hitting the studio very soon, and it seems they are men of their word. This week big bro Kevin tweeted out some footage of Joe and Nick in the studio whipping up some musical ear candy that will surely delight their fans. While there’s no certainty that the teased track will make their next studio release, the song certainly does blend the guys’ love for mixing genres, touching on soul, rock and disco. When Nick dropped by the MTV News offices recently, he said that when this next album drops, all bets are off as to what it will sound like. “We have spoken about it, and the thing we’re doing which is different to any record we’ve made in the past is we’re saying, ‘Anything goes, let’s just vibe out, listen to a million songs, write a million songs and see what we’re feeling most.’ Our statement, as a band, for this record has to be really strong. We feel like we want to deliver the best record we can.” Individually, the guys have been busy churning out albums, but there hasn’t been a proper JB album since 2009, when they dropped Lines, Vines and Trying Times. The guys are well aware that the music scene is vastly different three years later. “We pay attention to it, definitely,” Nick said. “That’s part of your job as an artist, too, is to be aware of what other people are doing. … We pay attention and have been paying attention just to see where we want to fall. But first we just want to write great songs, and as far as how it sounds, that’ll come second.” There has yet to be a release date for the album, but the Jonas Brothers have teased that it may drop before the end of the year. The hashtag #JonasBrothers2012 attached to the studio video may be the best hint so far. “We don’t know how long it’s going to take us to write this record,” Nick warned. “It may take a couple weeks, it may take months, it could take years, but we’re ready to go on that journey. It’s been a while and there has been a lot of growth as individuals and musically as well. We’ve all gone on our journeys musically. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of that.” What are you hoping to see on the Jonas Brothers’ next album? Leave your comment below! LMFAO Make No Apologies In ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ Video

RedFoo and Sky Blu throw epic house party in cartoon-like clip featuring David Hasselhoff. By Jocelyn Vena LMFAO Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images First they had us shufflin’. Then they introduced us to the wiggle. And for their latest video , for the club-thumping track “Sorry for Party Rocking,” the guys of LMFAO are throwing the ultimate cartoon-like house party. The clip, which premiered Monday night, opens with an older couple (played by LMFAO’s Sky Blu and RedFoo) arguing over the ruckus of a nearby house party, hosted by LMFAO’s very own Sky and Red. When the older gentleman makes his way over to the party to complain, he gets the door slammed in his face. Inside the party, the guys and their colorful crew are wearing their animal-print and neon-colored clothes, dancing and drinking the night away. When they refuse to shut down the party, the older man calls the police. But instead of shutting it down, they join the madness. So does everyone else: from pizza delivery guys and sexy nurses to truck drivers and David Hasselhoff (who appeared with the guys onstage during their 2011 American Music Awards performance). And, while the older man is trying to shut the party down, he finds his wife inside enjoying the festivities. Who could not be charmed by a house party thrown by Red and Sky? As the video begins to come to a close, RedFoo falls over from all the good times. When he is whisked away by an ambulance, he drops his phone, which is later picked up by someone who begins to party rock to “Anthem.” Christopher “Kid” Reid (from Kid’N’Play , who know a thing or two about house parties) arrives at the scene as the party seems to be winding down to complain about all the noise. In the final seconds, the video very quickly references the hospital scene that opens the group’s very memorable “Party Rock Anthem” video , where they fought off a zombie-like dancing epidemic. Perhaps this party had something to do with the origins of the plague in that video. Directed by Mickey Finnegan (who directed “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It” as well as clips for Cee Lo Green and Soulja Boy), the whole video takes place in a world made up of cardboard cutouts and animations, making it a surreal escape. The video includes smooth dances moves from former “America’s Best Dance Crew” dance crews Quest Crew and the Beat Freaks. What do you think of LMFAO’s new video? Leave your comment below!
