Solange & Cassie Are V Magazine’s “Fearless Females” Of Music [PHOTOS]

See the article here:

Solange, Cassie, VV Brown and more ladies are featured in V magazine’s annual “Music Issue.” Named “Fearless Females” by the publication, the women discuss the recording process, sounds you’ll hear, and messages they want to deliver on their new albums. SOLANGE On her new album: There are a lot of songs about sex. It’s the kind of record you put on when your man is coming over, when you’re with your girls. There are songs that make you wanna dance because we were kind of partying our way through the record, but it’s very chill. My references for the record were all Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, not just their typical Janet and Prince stuff, but SOS Band and their b-sides with Chaka Khan. At first the songs were really dark because I had a premonition before the record that I was going to die. I was having panic attacks and wiling out. [But] I don’t need anyone telling me ‘this isn’t cool enough’ or anyone from the opposite end saying ‘this seems kind of weird.’ I’m lucky enough to have been in this business for so long that I know how it works. It’s not that hard. It’s not rocket science. On her new domestic role: Now being in a stable situation, sometimes that feels f**ked up within itself. I’ve been on the road my entire life since I was 13, even when I had my son he came on the road with me. Now that he’s in school where there is a real structure, we have to be home during those times. Being that grounded feels really foreign to me. Solange Goes Off On Twitter, Defends Beyonce & Baby! CASSIE On her new album: I have hundreds of songs recorded for this album. I’ve been working on it for a long time. Finally, I had to decide my direction. I felt kind of exposed when I stopped working in the studio. My friends would call me to hang out and I would say, ‘nope, going in the studio,’ and they’d say, ‘you’ve been in the studio for four years!’ At the time I made the record I went out to Ibiza and I really started to feel these jungle beats. But at the same time I wanted to keep the ‘Me and U’ tone, really simple and clean. I have a lot of friends who are DJs and they like to mix, so I like to leave a really clean skeleton with the vocal. In my video we called it ‘giving ’90s supermodel.’ It’s the perfect definition of who I am right now and what I’m going through. People aren’t going to expect me to come out with what I have.” Cassie Wears Next To Nothing In “King Of Hearts” Video [PREVIEW] VV BROWN On her new album: My second album has a message: it’s about my generation and things going on in the world, but I didn’t want it to come across preachy. I love writing upbeat songs with darker undertones. Sometimes you want to shy away from political things because people will tell you to leave that to the politicians, but I want my fans to hear a message that is about questioning the world and getting them to question what fame is. I find it difficult to even say the word ‘fan.’ We’re all the same. As a generation, let’s evolve and shift away from celebrity culture, I think it’s really unhealthy. A Lil’ Attention Sloring Positivity: Kimmy Cakes Takes A Trip Haiti On A Humanitarian Mission

Sak pase Kimmy!!! Kim Kardashian is in Haiti. Not Las Vegas or Miami, Haiti. The divorcing reality star accompanied actress/activist Maria Bello, of the recently canceled TV series Prime Suspect, to Haiti earlier in the week. Mom Kris Jenner is along as well. Bello co-founded a charity called We Advance that operates a women’s clinic servicing the poorest of the poor women in Haiti, a country that hasn’t begun to recover from its devastating earthquake almost two years ago. Kim’s role in making the trip is to help bring more attention to the ongoing problems in Haiti. Her next prominent appearance is a bit more Kim-worthy. She’s hosting a New Year’s Eve bash at Tao in Las Vegas. As much as we have to question Kim’s intentions on most things, this does seem like a cause worthy of some praise…as long as she didn’t bring the E! cameras!! via RadarOnline More On Bossip! Get Your Charity Together: Wyclef Put On Blast Once Again About What Yele Haiti Is Doing With Their Donors’ Money

The mayor of the city of North Miami may have thought Wyclef ‘s do-gooder-ness was worthy of recognition last week, but people are stil giving him and his Yele Haiti foundation the side-eye. Yele Haiti’s coffers swelled to $16 million in 2010, the most the charity had ever received. But less than a third of that went to emergency efforts, and $1 million was paid to a Florida firm that doesn’t seem to exist, The Post has learned. Jean’s charity, which he founded in 2005 with his cousin Jerry Duplessis, was already troubled when the earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. The Post reported in 2008 that it had never filed a required tax form detailing its spending with the IRS. The group lost $244,000 in 2009. But hours after the earthquake hit, Jean took to Twitter to beg for $5 donations. An avalanche of donations poured in. Almost immediately, allegations surfaced that the former Fugees singer had used the charity’s cash for his own benefit. Critics found that four years earlier Yele Haiti had steered $250,000 to a Haitian TV station controlled by Jean and Duplessis. Jean held a Jan. 18, 2010, press conference to tearfully defend Yele Haiti’s reputation. “Have we made mistakes before? Yes,” Jean said. “Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not. Yele’s books are open and transparent.” The earthquake killed between 200,000 and 300,000 Haitians and left a million homeless. The country is still in the grip of a cholera epidemic. For all the desperation, records show that Yele Haiti spent just $5.1 million for emergency relief efforts, including food and water delivery to makeshift survivor camps, according to a review of the charity’s 2010 tax filings, which were obtained by The Post. Yele Haiti paid five contractors to accomplish its goals, including P&A Construction — which received $353,983 and is run by Warnel Pierre, the brother of Jean’s wife, Claudinette. A purported Miami business called Amisphere Farm Labor Inc. received a whopping $1,008,000 as a “food distributor.” No trace of the company could be found last week in the Sunshine State, but records show the company’s head, Amsterly Pierre, bought three properties in Florida last year, including a condo in an upscale waterfront community. The firm incorporated in August 2008 but never filed any of the subsequent financial paperwork required to do business in Florida, according to the Florida Department of State. The address listed for the business is an auto-repair shop in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, where a worker said he had never heard of Pierre or Amisphere. Pierre did not return a call for comment. Yele Haiti also paid $577,185 to a company called Samosa SA, based in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, as a “bulk water supplier.” But some of that money went to rent a house for Yele Haiti volunteers on Samosa’s property at the inflated price of $35,000 a month. “Given the fact that Yele Haiti was involved in a swirl of controversy after the earthquake in Haiti, it’s all the more reason to be more transparent to ensure donors that their funds are going to help people,” said the Better Business Bureau’s Bennett Weiner. In Clef’s defense, a lot of charities’ hands have been tied by red tape and political BS in Haiti following the earthquake, due to the fact that the outbound government at the time wasn’t necessarily all that interested in seeing the country move forward. Yele also wouldn’t be the first American-based charity to partner with people who didn’t necessarily have the best intentions when it came to actually helping Haiti. But you would think, at this point, Wyclef would do a better job of covering his a$$ and making sure everything he and Yele did was on the money… Source

Comeback??? Oprah Winfrey Makes One Last Desperate Attempt To Gain Viewers For Her OWN Network

Oprah just can’t seem to get right with this OWN thing. Oprah Winfrey is taking another crack at getting her OWN TV project off of life support. She’s now headed back on the air with a new show called Oprah’s Next Chapter that will premiere in January. When Winfrey shut down her iconic chat show after 25 years, she said at the time her role going forward would be strictly behind the cameras for her new network. But the results at OWN have been so disappointing, she had to try something new. Oprah’s Next Chapter will have Winfrey visit Steven Tyler at his New Hampshire home, travel to Haiti with Sean Penn nearly two years after the earthquake, and have a slumber party at Paula Deen’s Georgia estate. Nothing has yet been announced about what to do with Rosie O’Donnell’s struggling show on OWN. Introduced with great fanfare, the series had 497,000 viewers when it premiered October 10. It is now under 200,000. No wonder even Oprah’s best friend Gayle King has jumped ship! She’s shuttered her OWN talk show and is moving to CBS where she’s co-host The Early Show. We’re not sold that this lil’ stunt will work, but we don’t wish any evil on ol’ Harpo. via RadarOnline More On Bossip! Justin Bieber Auctioning Off His Snake For Charity

Fans can bid on Johnson now, with all proceeds going to Pencils of Promise. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: WireImage Justin Bieber is auctioning off Johnson, the baby boa constrictor he brought to the 2011 Video Music Awards , with all proceeds going to Pencils of Promise, one of the organizations he’s sponsoring through his Believe charity drive . That means one lucky fan has the chance to win a decidedly unique bit of Bieber memorabilia. Bidding is now under way over on the Charity Buzz website (Johnson is currently going for $175, FYI) and closes November 29. Of course, only serious bidders need apply, because if you end up winning the auction, you’ll be on the hook for the long haul, as a disclaimer on the site cautions: “Keeping a pet snake is a long-term responsibility. Before making any decision about keeping one, please ensure you have the money, space, knowledge, time, resources and enthusiasm required to properly care for the species you intend to keep, for the duration of its life.” Enthusiasm is key, since boa constrictors can live 20 years or more in captivity, and, as Charity Buzz states, “the welfare of this snake is the sole responsibility of the adopter … the adopter agrees to give the snake good care, which includes quality premium food, fresh water, sanitation and grooming, clean and secure indoor housing, clean and secure outdoor housing and overall safety.” The winning bidder must also guarantee Johnson’s veterinary care will be provided for. Bieber announced the launch of his Believe charity drive earlier this month, with the release of his Under the Mistletoe. He’s donating a portion of the sales from the holiday disc — which just debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart — to charity and is encouraging fans to match his donations to seven specific organizations: the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Pencils of Promise, Musicians on Call, Project Medishare for Haiti, City of Hope, the Boys & Girls Club of America and the Grammy Foundation. Elsewhere In The World: Sean Penn Has Put Haiti On Hold To Save North Africa

What would Black folks in the world do without Sean Penn in this decade? After basically living in Haiti for an entire year starting last January following the earthquake, Sean Penn, who we’re certain hasn’t abandoned his new part-time island home for good, is now fighting for North Africa. After waving an Egyptian flag in Cairo’s Tahrir Square Friday, Sean Penn has continued west on his humanitarian tour of North Africa. The actor made a stop in Tripoli, Libya, where he spoke to reporters about the state of the country post-Moammar Gadhafi. So what did the star have to say? Penn refused to talk about what his exact plans were in the Libyan capital when he chatted with the press outside his hotel, but he did praise the country’s citizens for their efforts in ousting the dictator, saying he admired “the courage to say ‘we want freedom.’” “It’s an extraordinary thing,” he gushed, adding that he was confident Libya could truly become a democracy. “An enormous price has been paid, but I think there is no question that they can follow it through,” he said. Last week the 51-year-old star was in Cairo, where he was invited by Egyptian-born actor Khaled el-Nabawi to participate in a rally demanding that military rulers speed up the transfer of power to civilians after an 18-day revolt caused the ouster of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in February. Citizens are worried the power will go to Mubarak supporters. Thank you, Based Sean Penn. No seriously… because which famous one of “us” have you heard go there? Source

Wyclef Serenades His Teacher, On ‘When I Was 17’

Former Fugees singer recalls trying to get out of summer school on the latest episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Dionne Buxton Wyclef Jean on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Before Wyclef Jean began his quest to conquer hunger in Haiti, he had to get past his first obstacle: Mrs. Serrato. On this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV, Wyclef speaks candidly about the trials he had to overcome to shape him into the multifaceted man he is today. Graduation time had arrived and Wyclef was ready to get fitted for his gown when his high school guidance counselor told him he was wasting his time. “So I’m going to get sized up, and they’re like, ‘Well, it’s not necessary for you to get sized up, because there’s one class you have to finish in summer school,’ ” he recalled. “I’m like, ‘What?’ ” He soon found out that he had earned an F in Algebra 2, and in order for him to walk with his classmates, his teacher had to change his grade. So Wyclef — being the out-of-the-box thinker he is — decided an apple wasn’t enough to win his teach over: He had to do what he does best to persuade Mrs. Serrato to give him a better grade. “At 17, there’s a certain confidence that you have,” Wyclef said. “So I was like, ‘If I sing a song for this woman, she’s gonna melt and I’m gonna get a D and I’mma pass the course.’ ” Wyclef grabbed his guitar and waltzed into his math class with an original song. “I was like, ‘I just wrote a song for you and I would just like to share it with you.’ ” Did Wyclef’s swoon tactic work? Find out when the former Fugees member appears on Saturday’s “When I Was 17.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Wyclef Jean and “Awkward” star Ashley Rickards — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Ninja Please: Wyclef Jean Confesses His Affection For Swirlin’ Sarah Palin

So brothas just gonna start coming out of the woodworks talkin’ bout how they love Sarah Palin after finding out she’s been swirl surfin’??? He might have played at Barack Obama’s inauguration, but Wyclef Jean also really likes Sarah Palin. The Haiti native, who lost his bid to become president of his home country, was talking about the many virtues of the former vice presidential candidate Monday night at a post-fashion show party. “I have to tell you this, I am a huge fan of Sarah Palin,” Jean said at the after party for the Donna Karen Collection show. Why does he like the spunky Alaska native? “Cause she’s rad. She’s shrewd. She’s cool. Because at the end of the day, I’m for the people, because this is the United States of America…this is what America’s really about,” the Fugees band member said. “Anyone should have the right to say, ‘Look I can do the job and this is what qualifies me to do the job.’” There is one person who might not be as big a Sarah Palin fan though. “Now my wife probably will debate and disagree with me,” Jean told Women’s Wear Daily. Clef goes on to say: “I’m not saying she could be the next president, you know, but there’s something about her. Heavy debates in my house,” he said. ”Whenever I say Sarah Palin, people think I’m crazy, but I like her, I do. I can like whoever. This is America, right?” Why, Clef? SMH via RadarOnline
