Race Matters: Black Contestants Sue “The Bachelor” For Discrimination After Getting Kicked Out Of Auditions

Black folks want reality show love too! Over the years, one of the most commonly asked questions about “ The Bachelor ” has been why are there not more African-American men and women on the show. If you believe a new lawsuit that has been filed, then the responsible parties may well be the people working behind the scenes at the popular reality show. Via TMZ reports : “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” are about to get a thorny rose — in the form of a lawsuit. We’re told the 2 plaintiffs — both African Americans — went to a Nashville hotel to audition for the role of bachelor. Christopher Johnson — an aspiring NFL player — claims when he arrived a producer asked him what he was doing there. Johnson and the other plaintiff, Nathaniel Claybrooks, both say they were taken to the side of the room and left out of the normal audition process. Neither was called back, and they believe it’s because of their race. They will be filing a class action lawsuit in federal court Wednesday AM. We’re told ABC, Warner Horizon Television, Next Entertainment, NZK Productions and creator Mike Fleiss, will all be sued. Do you think the lack of minority representation on the show has been because of racism? More On Bossip! Happy 22nd Birthday, Kristen Stewart! What’s Her Finest Onscreen Moment?

On this day in the year 1990, Kristen Jaymes Stewart was born in Los Angeles to a script supervisor mother and father who works in television. Who’d have guessed that she’d grow up to become the highest earning actress in Hollywood before she was old enough to drink? Thanks to the Twilight films, Stewart’s star rose in the blink of an eye (okay, four years and soon to be five movies), but she also deserves credit for racking up indie cred between bouts of vampire swooning. On the occasion of her 22nd birthday — and with 22 features to her name to date — let’s name Stewart’s finest onscreen moment. Stewart began her career with a few uncredited appearances in kids flicks ( The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas , anyone?) before launching a steady stream of child acting roles ( Catch That Kid , Panic Room , Cold Creek Manor ). By her early teens she was already balancing indie dramas with mainstream films ( Catch That Kid and Undertow in 2004; Fierce People and Zathura in 2005), continuing to keep a foot in both worlds even after 2008’s Twilight . Over the years she’s robbed a bank, adventured through space, battled a debilitating neurological disease, rocked out as Joan Jett, and hooked the mean streets of New Orleans; played daughter to Jodie Foster , Dennis Quaid , Robert De Niro , Meg Ryan , and Diane Lane ; and romanced Jesse Eisenberg , Emile Hirsch , Jamie Bell , Adam Brody , Eddie Redmayne , and, of course, Robert Pattinson . (This year she’ll be seen Snow White and the Huntsman , On the Road , and the franchise-ender The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 .) But reach back to 2001 and you’ll find fine work from an 11-year-old Stewart playing tomboy Sam in the ensemble indie The Safety of Objects . Rose Troche’s suburban drama featured a natural, instinctive turn from Stewart, who shared scenes with Patricia Clarkson and Timothy Olyphant a full year before mainstream audiences saw her in Panic Room . Watch little Kristen Stewart below and chime in below.

Aerosmith Nearly Done With Album Due This Summer

Singer Steven Tyler promises to bring ‘a little bit of 1975 back.’ By Gil Kaufman Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler Photo: Getty Images As if guitarist Joe Perry’s surprise “Happy Birthday” serenade to singer and judge Steven Tyler on “American Idol” last week weren’t proof enough that all is good in Aerosmith land, on Wednesday, the veteran rockers confirmed they’re releasing their long-awaited studio album this summer. They didn’t reveal the title of the album, their first featuring new material since 2001’s Just Push Play, but singer Tyler told Reuters that after a few years of turmoil and tension things are (relatively) back to normal. “The camaraderie’s there, there’s some songs that are new rock, and old rock and middle-of-the-road rock, and blues, piano,” he said. “Joe Perry singing a couple of songs, I’m playing the drums, Joey sings, just all kinds of stuff.” Tyler, 64, added that they have re-teamed with longtime producer Jack Douglas in order to bring “a little bit of 1975 back.” Rolling Stone reported that Tyler said the band is two songs from the finish line and some of the titles completed so far include “Legendary Child,” “Beautiful” and “Out Go the Lights.” The release date was not announced, but the band — who arrived at the press conference via motorcycle, a white Lamborghini, taxi and rickshaw — promised to have the disc ready around the time of the kickoff of their recently announced North American “Global Warming” tour, which begins June 16 in Minneapolis. “You’re going to get some new songs from the new album and some old songs from the old albums and you’re going to get new us and old us, and we’re just going to go out and rock your world,” Tyler said. The Boston-bred icons have been trying to get together to record their 15th studio album for several years, but their efforts were interrupted by a variety of ailments, stage accidents involving Tyler (as well as his rehab stint in 2009) and enmity that was stirred up by the singer’s decision to sign on as a judge for “Idol.” But despite the grumbling from Perry when Tyler announced his decision to take a seat next to Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson in 2010, the motor-mouthed vocalist said the exposure has helped the group reach a whole new audience. “The music that we write, fortunately it’s been seductive to all genres of people,” he said. “There’s going to be kids who are going to get introduced to Aerosmith all over again, and there’s a bunch of new music that we’re taking a risk and putting out. It’s kind of futuristic rock, all the way across the board, we’re just good for that.” Related Artists Aerosmith

Justin Bieber Takes A ‘Leap’ With ‘Boyfriend’

‘He’s an incredible, incredible writer and amazing vocalist,’ producer Mike Posner tells MTV News about Bieber’s new single. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images Justin Bieber dropped his bumping new single “Boyfriend” on Monday (March 26), teasing his next album, Believe. It’s a grinding, midtempo song that hears Bieber proclaiming all the ways he can make a girl happy (swag and fondue included!). Co-produced and co-written by “Cooler Than Me” singer Mike Posner, the song shows growth from Bieber’s “Baby” days. When MTV News caught up with Posner last week, he told us what it was like to hit the studio with Bieber (and co-producer and co-writer Mason Levy) for the track. “I’ve known [Bieber’s manager] Scooter [Braun] for a few years, so I actually ran into Scooter at a Clippers game and told him I would love to work with Justin,” Posner said. “I got the opportunity to write with Justin. I didn’t really know what to expect at first, but he’s an incredible, incredible writer and amazing vocalist. “Because I’m an artist myself, I can be pretty selective on who I produce for and who I make beats for … and really what I’m looking for is an amazing vocalist, somebody that can sing better than I can,” he continued. “And the other thing is somebody that’s willing to not try to make something that succeeds within the matrix of what pop music is now, but makes something that moves that matrix to where it is, and Justin was willing to take that leap with me.” Bieber spoke to Ryan Seacrest on his radio show hours after the song’s world premiere Monday, explaining why this was the perfect track to kick off the Believe era. “It was a really hard choice. I mean, we had so many songs, so many uptempos we could release, [that] I thought, ‘Let’s slow it down,’ ” he said, adding that there are already plenty of fast songs all over the radio. “It’s just something a little bit more mature, but it’s also something I think I’m ready for.” While fans and industry insiders had been wondering what a more grown-up Bieber would sound like, he said he tried to block out all the noise when making the track. “There’s so many people that are going to give me opinions, but I’m the only one who can ultimately make those decisions, because I’m going to have to live with my career for the rest of my life. So I thought this was the perfect single,” he said, adding that this song “was me all the way; it is a representation of me.” And Bieber said “Boyfriend” perfectly sets up what’s coming next. “It’s kind of classic,” he said of the album. “The songs, I feel, won’t get old. The music is very fresh, but it’s also — I’m taking a lot from old-school music, a lot of Michael Jackson, a lot of old R&B, a lot of old pop. It’s pretty special.” What do you think of “Boyfriend”? Erika Van Pelt Sent Home On ‘American Idol’

DeAndre Brackensick and Heejun Han join Van Pelt in bottom three. By Adam Graham Erika Van Pelt and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” Photo: Fox Erika Van Pelt debuted a dramatic new look on Wednesday’s episode of “American Idol,” but it wasn’t enough to save her in the competition as the 26-year-old Rhode Islander was sent packing on Thursday’s (March 22) “Idol.” Van Pelt made it into the finals as a wild-card choice and consistently found herself facing elimination. This week she chopped off her blond locks and revealed a sleek, short black ‘do and received strong marks for her version of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” But it wasn’t enough for viewers, apparently, as she landed at the bottom of America’s votes. She sang “I Believe in You and Me” for the judges to try to get them to use their save on her, but they let her go with a swift “no,” delivered by Randy Jackson. (As if the pain of elimination isn’t tough enough, Van Pelt now has to go back and explain to her New England friends what she was doing singing “New York State of Mind.” Good luck with that one.) Van Pelt found herself in the bottom three alongside DeAndre Brackensick and Heejun Han. Brackensick was released to safety first and was followed by Han. Han was on the receiving end of some stinging criticism from mentor Jimmy Iovine following his goofball performance Wednesday night of Billy Joel’s “My Life.” “He came out and disrespected the entire process. His performance was more like four minutes of a bad Adam Sandler movie that goes straight to DVD,” Iovine said of Han’s campy take on the song, calling it a “stunt gone wrong.” “At the end of the day, Interscope has to spend a lot of money on somebody who wins this show, and that’s not it.” Han defended himself by saying, “I’m not trying to be a star; I’m just really happy where I am.” Elsewhere on the show, in a surprise birthday tribute to Steven Tyler, his Aerosmith cohort Joe Perry came out and played “Happy Birthday” for him, backed by the Idols. Tyler turns 64 on Monday. Also, controversy magnet Lana Del Rey performed her hit single “Video Games,” complete with a closing confetti shower, and season 10 third-place finisher Haley Reinhart returned to the “Idol” stage to perform her new single “Free.” What did you think about “Idol” on Thursday? Was it time for Van Pelt to go? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ Single Is ‘Definitely Edgier’

Producer/songwriter tells MTV News the ‘sexier’ track, which drops Monday, will ‘definitely surprise people.’ By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images Justin Bieber is days away from dropping his lead Believe single, “Boyfriend,” and its early buzz grew even louder on Wednesday when Bieber released the lyrics for the track. While fans will have to wait until Monday to hear the song, MTV News got a little bit of a tease from one of the guys who worked with the teen sensation on the track. “This record is different in a very good way,” “BF” co-producer and co-writer Mason Levy told MTV News. “Definitely edgier, it’s more grown-up, it’s more developed and it’s sexier. It’s just like really dope. It’s gonna definitely surprise people. People aren’t really expecting that they’re going to like it.” Levy thinks pretty much everyone is destined to like it, thanks to a sound that reaches far beyond that of Bieber’s tweeny pop days. “It’s more of something that everyone can drive around and listen to it, whether they’re guys or girls or older,” he said. Bieber has said he wanted to grow up with this album and the Mike Posner-produced song. His model was the post-‘NSYNC Justin Timberlake. From the sound of it, he might have hit that nail on the head. “It’s more just the verses [that he raps on] and the rest he’s singing,” he said. “It’s dope. It’s hip-hop, but with great acoustic R&B, pop guitar with very hip-hop, clubby drums and really dope Justin Timberlake-y melodies.” The creation of the song was pretty organic, Levy said. “We got together and started messing around. It was one of those things where you didn’t have to struggle too much. It just kind of happened,” he said. “He always goes in and does melodies and he’s involved in lyrics and everything.” “Boyfriend” will set the tone for the album, set for release later this year. “There’s definitely lots of diversity on the album. There’s really ballad-y stuff and there’s more stuff like this. I would say [‘Boyfriend’] is harder,” Levy added. “He’s very open to everything.” Are you excited to hear a “grown-up” Bieber on “Boyfriend”? Leave your comment below! Produced by Mike Posner, the track features a bit of Bieber rapping lines like “Tell me what you like, dear/ Tell me what you don’t/ I could be your Buzz Lightyear/ Fly across the globe/ You don’t even need to fight, dear/ You already know/ I can make you shine bright/ Like you’re laying in the snow, brrr.” Related Videos Happy Birthday, Justin Bieber!
