‘Harry Potter’ World Cup: Help Decide The Best Character!

Voting opens Monday on the MTV Movies Blog to finally put this debate to rest. By Eric Ditzian Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Photo: Warner Bros. Are you a Dumbledore guy or gal? Perhaps you’re keen on Hermione and Harry? Or maybe you shun the high-profile faces and hold a special place in your heart for Moaning Myrtle or Nearly Headless Nick? Who truly is the greatest “Harry Potter” character of all time? That’s a debate fans have been having since J.K. Rowling published her first novel about a boy wizard in 1997 and one that continues to rage as the final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” nears its July 15 debut. And you know what? It’s time to finally put this fantastical argument to rest! Get ready for MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup , a monthlong tournament pitting 64 “Potter” characters against one another to see which will be decided solely by online fan voting. Check out the full bracket with all the supernatural matchups, then study up and get ready to vote when the first round kicks off Monday, June 20, at MoviesBlog.MTV.com . Check out photos of all 60 of the “Harry Potter” World Cup players. The single-elimination tournament will proceed from round to round with the intensity of the fiercest of Quidditch matches, with some characters falling by the wayside and others continuing to fight the good fight. It’s all leading up to the epic championship round. The two finalists will be announced Monday, July 11. Voting will continue through MTV News’ live-stream coverage of the “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” red-carpet premiere in New York City, with the winner crowned at the end of the event. ‘Harry Potter’ Actress Emma Watson Sick Of Having ‘No Control’ Over Her Life

‘I have lived in a complete bubble,’ ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ star tells Vogue. By Eric Ditzian Emma Watson on the July 2011 cover of Vogue Photo: Vogue When we caught up with Emma Watson at the MTV Movie Awards afterparty earlier this month, the 21-year-old Brit confessed, “I’m having the time of my life.” For the first time in her professional career, Watson is free of the all-encompassing “Harry Potter” franchise and has set about creating for herself a cinematic second act — one that has nothing to do with Hogwarts and Hermione Granger. It’s been a long time coming, as the actress admitted in a new Vogue cover story. “I have had no control over my life,” Watson said. “I have lived in a complete bubble. They found me and picked me for the part. And now I’m desperately trying to find my way through it.” The first move she made was signing on to an adaptation of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” a provocative novel about teenage life in America. She also dropped out of Brown University in March, after years of fighting to continue her education while also remaining committed to one of the biggest film franchises on Earth. “I have felt for the last 10 years I have had this battle — I’ve been fighting so hard to have an education. It’s been this uphill struggle,” she said. “I was Warner Bros.’ pain in the butt. I was their scheduling conflict. I was the one who made life difficult.” Now fully outside the “Potter” bubble, Watson is trying, as she put it, “to really enjoy the good things because it makes the bad things OK.” Among those unwelcome things is the constant attention of the paparazzi. And when she does begin a new relationship (her previous one ended last summer), she hopes the tabloid spotlight won’t spoil the romance. “I’m a feminist, but I think that romance has been taken away a bit for my generation. I think what people connect with in novels is this idea of an overpowering, encompassing love — and it being more important and special than anything and everything else,” she said. “I would love to not date someone in the same industry as me. Otherwise it becomes what it means to everyone else.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Emma Watson ‘Couldn’t Compete’ With Pattinson/Lautner Kiss

‘Harry Potter’ star tells MTV News that all the Movie Awards smooching had her feeling left out. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday Photo: Steve Granitz/Getty Images Aside from the much-anticipated premiere of a new “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” clip during Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, it was a pretty quiet night for Team Potter, who sat and watched as “Twilight” reaped (nearly) all the awards , besting “Deathly Hollows, Part 1” for Best Movie, Best Male and Female Performance, Best Fight Scene and Best Kiss. In fact, “Potter” took home just one bucket of Golden Popcorn — Tom Felton’s turn as Draco Malfoy earned him Best Villain honors — and as if that weren’t bad enough, it was the stars of “Twilight” who garnered the lion’s share of the headlines too, as everything from Robert Pattinson’s lip-lock with co-star Taylor Lautner to the squeeing reactions to the “Breaking Dawn, Part 1” trailer burned up search engines in the hours following the show. So you could imagine what it must have been like for the “Harry Potter” stars who were actually on hand for the Movie Awards — like, for example, Emma Watson, who not only lost Best Female Performance to Kristen Stewart, but didn’t even get to see the kiss between Pattinson and Lautner. “I missed this moment! I came out, and they were like, ‘Rob just missed Taylor!’ and I was like, ‘Damn!’ ” Watson told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz following the show. “I was still backstage [after introducing the ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2’] clip, so I missed it. But, I mean, yeah, good on them!” And as if missing out on the kiss-to-end-all-kisses wasn’t bad enough, the whole lip-locking theme of the night had Watson feeling left out. Seems she was the only person who didn’t have someone to kiss. “I mean, I was really up against it. Kristen [Stewart] had two kisses, and Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman making out,” she laughed. “I mean, I couldn’t really compete!” MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . MTV Movie Awards: Top Five Moments You Didn’t See!

Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner greet each other with a ‘Twilight’ chest bump, a Foo Fighter invites a ‘Harry Potter’ villain out to drinks, and more. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart at the 2011 Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Given that we are MTV News, and the Movie Awards is one of our biggest events of the year, our intrepid team of writers, reporters and producers enjoy what is, hands down, the best behind-the-scenes access to any and everything that happens before, after and during the live broadcast. With that, we narrowed down a pretty impressive list of can’t-believe-it-happened-off-camera moments for you. In no particular order, here are the top five “events” witnessed backstage at the 2011 Movie Awards : Dave Grohl Hijacks Our Best Villain Interview Minutes after accepting his second Movie Award for Best Villain, MTV News was chatting up “Harry Potter” star Tom Felton about the win, where he’ll keep his award, and so forth. Foo Fighters frontman Grohl suddenly jumped into the frame and asked what we were talking about. He went on to congratulate Felton on his win with a friendly hug. Grohl ended the brief encounter by extending an invite to a visibly star-struck Felton to join him for some post-show Absinthe. Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart Chest-Bump We love it when the stars of our favorite films seem to be genuinely good friends both on and offscreen — especially when those real-life pals are two of our favorite “Twilight” actors, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. In between accepting and presenting awards, we watched Stewart and Lautner greet each other backstage with an actual chest bump, which they followed up with a friendly hug. Emma Watson Gets McDreamy’d In spite of the fact that stylish Emma Watson always looks so composed, not even the “Harry Potter” star could resist the dashing good looks of “Grey’s Anatomy” hottie Patrick Dempsey, a.k.a. McDreamy. We witnessed Watson and the “Transformers: Rise of the Fallen” actor passing each other with a smile and a nod. But once Dempsey was out of earshot, Watson turned to her rep, put her hand over her heart and sighed at his dreaminess. “Chocolate Wasted” With Alexys Nycole Sanchez For its sheer adorableness, this moment might be the lead contender for the best thing we witnessed backstage. Moments after “Grown-ups” starlet Alexys Nycole Sanchez nabbed her first Golden Popcorn trophy for her “I want to get chocolate wasted!” line, our MTV News team caught up with the pre-tween to get her reaction. Really, she was too cute for words. And You can see the delight in our faces in the photo posted on our a href=”http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2011/06/05/mtv-movie-awards-behind-the-scenes-live-blog”> Movies Blog as we had to kneel to speak with Sanchez. ‘Harry Potter’ Fans Ready For ‘Twilight’ Battle Next Year

‘ ‘Twilight’ has this incredibly hard-core fanbase that apparently cannot be beat,’ says one Potter expert. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Wigler Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” swept the 2011 MTV Movie Awards , and “Harry Potter” fans are not too pleased about it. On Monday (June 6), MTV News caught up with some of the head honchos at leading “Harry Potter” fan sites so they could weigh in on the “Potter” versus “Twilight” Movie Awards rivalry . Some shared their theories about why “Twilight” seems to beat out the Boy Who Lived every time they’re in the same category. “It is a shame because ‘Potter’ definitely deserves it, but ‘Twilight’ has this incredibly hard-core fanbase that apparently cannot be beat,” said Andrew Sims of MuggleNet . “I just hope that next year at the next Movie Awards ‘Potter’ fans actually learn their lesson and get voting.” Although “Potter” fans couldn’t overcome Twilighter fervor, #teampotter did jump to the number two trending topic worldwide on Twitter during the Movie Awards pre-show. Julia Hodges of DanRadcliffe.com and RupertGrint.net was disappointed “Harry Potter” didn’t come away any of the night’s awards — other than Best Villain for Tom Felton — that she believed the series truly deserved. “The ‘Potter’ films [are] not only amazing for the people who love ‘Harry Potter,’ they’re amazing films,” Hodges said. “They’ve been nominated for so many Oscars and they’ve actually won a few, and they were just recognized at the most recent BAFTA awards for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema, so the quality of the ‘Potter’ films alone is incredible.” But Rosi Halse of the Leaky Cauldron wouldn’t let the fact that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” didn’t collect a bunch of Golden Popcorn statues dampen her love of the series. “The ‘Harry Potter’ fanbase is so huge, and we know we love the films and we love the stories and we love the actors,” she said. “I think you can’t help but be proud whether or not they did miss out on the awards.” Next year’s Movie Awards will be the last time a film in the “Harry Potter” franchise will be eligible to compete at the awards show, and the fan sites are already planning to rally Potter-heads to come out in full force and actually bring home some Golden Popcorn. After seeing an exclusive scene from the “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” during the Movie Awards, Halse said she’s convinced that 2012 could be the year of “Potter.” “If that is just a preview of what’s to come, I think it will definitely walk away with a few awards next year,” she said. ‘Harry Potter’ Films Could All Get 3-D Theatrical Releases, Producers Hint

‘I suspect the studio is going to be reluctant to let it die,’ David Heyman tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. “Harry Potter” producers may have ditched plans to release “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” in 3-D last November, but they haven’t abandoned bringing three dimensions to the film. The flick is currently being converted to 3-D for a Blu-ray release . What’s more, we just might see the rest of the franchise get the 3-D treatment too. “We’re doing 3-D for the DVD of ‘7, Part 1,’ and there’s been no discussion of anything else yet,” producer David Heyman told MTV News recently. “But I suspect the studio is going to be reluctant to let it die, and if there’s an opportunity to maybe enrich … ” Heyman left it at that, but those hints jibe with what he told us as far back as March 2010 , when he said of converting the entire series, “I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.” For now, filmmakers are racing to finish “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” ahead of the July release and working on the conversion of the first part for the Blu-ray. “We’re very pleased with the way ‘Part 1’ is going — the 3-D for the Blu-ray,” producer David Barron said. “It’s really exciting, really involved.” “I was surprised at how wonderful it is,” Heyman added. “It is different in some ways [than the theatrical release], but it’s enriching.” Additionally, they’re continuing to work on theatrical 3-D effects for “Part 1,” a process that has not yet been finished. “We haven’t completed the first part in 3-D for film release, for theatrical,” Barron said. “The quality is quite different,” Heyman explained. “It’s much easier, in a way, to do 3-D for a smaller screen for a bigger screen.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
