Daniel Radcliffe To Star In ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’

Rodriguez/ Getty Images Daniel Radcliffe is set to move from the magical classrooms at Hogwarts to the mud-spattered trenches of World War I. The “Harry Potter” star, who only recently wrapped shooting on the two-part series conclusion of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” is looking at another literary adaptation for his next film: Erich Maria Remarque’s novel “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Variety reports that the “Potter” star will lead the “All Quiet” cast as Paul Baumer, a young German soldier who is sent with his friends to fight in the trenches. Unlike other popular war stories, Remarque’s book eschews themes of heroism and instead presents a bleak tale of young men whose daily lives vacillate between crushing boredom and mortal terror, examining the effects such an existence has on their psyches. “All Quiet on the Western Front” has been adapted for big screens before, as well as for television and radio. Indeed, Lewis Mileston’s 1930 version won an Oscar for Best Picture (becoming the first non-musical talkie to do so), leaving this latest attempt with quite a lot to live up to. Radcliffe comes to the project after falling for the script, which comes from Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson, who are also producing under the Sliding Down Rainbows Entertainment banner. The “Potter” star is currently committed to performing on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”; “All Quiet” shooting will kick off in spring 2012, after Radcliffe finishes with his theater commitments in 2011. Radcliffe might be finished in front of the film cameras for “Deathly Hallows,” but he’ll spend the next year-plus posing for press photos as he promotes the two-part series closer. The first of the two films hits theaters this year, on November 19, and the conclusion follows months later, on July 15, 2011. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Radiohead, Hope of the States — these are the kinds of bands Daniel Radcliffe listened to for years to get into character for his scenes in the various “Harry Potter” films. Sometimes at 6 in the morning, he’d pop into the makeup chair and start blasting old-school ska and punk tunes for all to hear. That’s the sort of stuff that gets Radcliffe pumped up to do his job, so it should come as no surprise that he’s rather less familiar with the musical stylings of Justin Bieber. But it is a surprise — and a pretty funny one, at that — to hear who the “Potter” star thought was actually behind hits like “Baby” and “One Time.” “I only heard Justin Bieber for the first time two weeks ago,” Radcliffe told MTV News. “I genuinely thought it was a woman singing. I’d never heard it before. Is it big in England yet?” Well, Bieber’s My World dropped in the U.K. in January and went gold by April, and while the pop star’s upcoming tour will keep him within the confines of North America through 2010, there’s always the possibility that he’ll cross the pond again next year. Just don’t count on Radcliffe to be in attendance when that happens. “I’m so out of the loop when it comes to pop culture that I kind of don’t even try anymore,” he admitted. That’s not to say he’s completely disconnected from everything mainstream. Radcliffe has much respect for the artist who’s produced tunes like “Alejandro” and “Telephone.” “I know who Lady Gaga is,” he said. “I think she’s kind of amazing. She’s really got a voice. My god. Rupert Grint Dishes On ‘Harry Potter’ Epilogue … And His Ice Cream Truck

‘I drove it down on the last day and served ice cream to everyone,’ actor says of last day of filming ‘Deathly Hallows.’ By Terri Schwartz Rupert Grint Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images ORLANDO, Florida — There was a bit of an Internet stir earlier this week when “Harry Potter” actor Warwick Davis tweeted that filming of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” had finally come to a close . He also included a photo of co-star Rupert Grint’s ice cream truck , which the red-headed actor better known as Ron Weasley had brought to the set on the last day of filming to serve ice cream to the cast and crew. Davis later took down his tweets about Grint’s sweet delivery and told MTV News at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter grand-opening celebration on Wednesday that he removed them because the ice cream truck caused such a stir. The actor said he felt bad about the resulting fervor he caused in the “Harry Potter” fan community. When MTV caught up with Grint on the red carpet, though, he was more than happy to talk about the last day of filming and his ice cream truck. “I drove it down on the last day and served ice cream to everyone,” he said. Apparently it didn’t go precisely as planned, because he ended up being covered in ice cream by the end of the day. “I haven’t quite perfected the technique. It kind of came out in a jet.” Talk then turned to the shooting of the epilogue, which was always intended to be the last scene “Potter” filmed , and which Grint said was his favorite part. Some pictures have already leaked of the cast in their adult makeup, and Grint seemed to think the makeup department had done a good job. “We definitely look older, which was the goal,” he said. “I’m a bit heavier than I would have liked to have been.” The scene, which takes place 19 years after the conclusion of “Deathly Hallows,” was expected to be a poignant one to shoot, but Grint said he was unsure of how he would respond to it when he went in to film. “It was quite a sad day. I didn’t know quite how it would affect me,” he said. “I just kind of realized how [much time I’ve] spent with these people. David Yates Rumored to Direct Hobbit

When Guillermo del Toro left The Hobbit , Hollywood wondered if there was any director who could step in and guide such a massive, effects-laden series while remaining in the stylistic shadow of the auteurs who’d come before. Duh, of course: David Yates, who fulfilled that exact function on the last few installments of the Harry Potter series! ‘Harry Potter’ Filming Wraps — For The Last Time

Warwick Davis said it best when he tweeted on Saturday from the set of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” once director David Yates had wrapped shooting on the “Potter” franchise — for the last time — after 10 years. “The end of an Era — today is officially the last day of principal photography on ‘Harry Potter’ — ever,” wrote Warwick, who is also known for his work in “Star Wars” and “Willow.” “I feel honoured to be here as the director shouts cut for the very last time. Farewell Harry & Hogwarts, it’s been magic! X … and goodbye Griphook!” Davis is known to “Potter” fans as Hogwarts Professor Flitwick, but in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” director Chris Columbus also cast the actor as a “goblin bank teller” at the wizard bank, Gringotts. Davis’ teller comes to the aid of Harry Potter and his half-giant guardian Hagrid in the 2001 film. And that goblin, Griphook, has a larger, more pivotal role in “Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” It had long been announced that the final scene to be filmed at the end of “Deathly Hallows,” would be a flash-forward epilogue, but it appears some scenes needed to be re-shot from either the ( spoilers ahead ) rescue of Griphook from Malfoy Manor or the break-in at Gringotts, both major scenes featuring Griphook in “Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” To celebrate the end of filming, Rupert Grint showed up to set in his “Mr. Whippy” old school ice cream truck and served up scoops to the cast and crew. “It brought a smile to everyone’s face on what was a very emotional day,” Davis wrote on Twitter. That man wasn’t Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Mark Wahlberg or even host Aziz Ansari. It was Tom Cruise’s movie-studio exec alter-ego, Les Grossman . And with news that the “Tropic Thunder” character is getting a spin-off flick of his own, no one in Hollywood isn’t safe from Les’ tyranny. Not that they’re complaining. “Performance of the evening,” “Harry Potter” star and Best Villain winner Tom Felton told MTV News of Les’ dance-off with Jennifer Lopez. “I love Tom Cruise as Les Grossman. That’s awesome. Les all day. He’s the best dancer in the world, man. I got to get some lessons off him. He’s got some tight moves.” Seth Green also sang Grossman’s praises, noting that whatever Les does is “pretty amazing.” Paris Hilton added, “Tom Cruise onstage was really funny.” “Percy Jackson” star Logan Lerman admits that even though the movie mogul can be a rather foul-mouthed, somewhat polarizing individual, he still loves that guy. “I’m a huge Les Grossman fan,” he revealed. “It was really cool. Les Grossman — he’s the man!” “Twilight Saga” and “The Last Airbender” star Jackson Rathbone called Cruise’s Grossman the highlight of the Movie Awards. “My favorite moment of tonight’s show? I gotta say Tom Cruise as Les Grossman,” he explained. “I think he stole the entire show tonight. He really did.” Lo Bosworth and Stephanie Pratt of “The Hills” also praised the producer, but Bosworth might be partial. “I mean, Les Grossman is my agent,” Lo dished. “That’s why I’m such a superstar. London Mayor Still Pissed Over Losing Harry Potter Park

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, hasn’t forgiven Warner Bros. for building its “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” theme park in Orlando, taking to his weekly newspaper column to urge reform in all matters of unholy pagan leisure time. Opening June 18 in Florida, the 20-acre facility is the world’s first dedicated to the boy-wizard institution — and, if Johnson and his angry British constituency have anything to say about it, certainly not the last.
