When Glee Season 5 kicks off on September 19, four familiar faces will not be around to welcome viewers back to the Fox musical comedy. The network announced today (via TV Line) that the following actors/actresses will not return as series regulars: Heather Morris (Brittany) Mark Salling (Puck) Amber Riley (Mercedes) Harry Shum, Jr. (Mike) In related news, Dianna Agron – who scarcely appeared as Quinn on Glee Season 4 – is not slated to make any appearances at all in 2013-2014. It is possible that any or all of the aforementioned quartet may pop up for at least one or two episodes, but it’s too early to know for sure at the moment. The Glee community is reeling from a major shakeup after the surprising news that Chord Overstreet, who plays Sam, is being dropped from the cast . Meanwhile, fan faves Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr. were promoted to regulars. That’s great, but largely overshadowed by Overstreet’s ouster. Ashley Fink, who recurred on season two as Lauren, will return next year, although she has not received the same upgrade as Criss and Shrum. “well its been a good yr too bad its over, time for summer and starting fresh,” Chord – who could still recur occasionally – Tweeted after the news. It was not immediately clear why the Fox hit decided not to bring back the popular, 22-year-old actor as part of the third season’s cast. What do you think of this surprising news, Glee fans?

Even for the cast members of Glee , who are coasting through an Emmy award-winning freshman year, last week’s appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show was special. But for Harry Shum, Jr., who plays Mike Chang, the episode was his introduction to America via Matthew Morrison, who when summoned to show off his dancing abilities, turned the attention onto 25-year-old co-star: “This guy is incredible, and I’m so happy there is a show called Glee that can showcase the talents of someone who just breathes dance.” For those who were unfamiliar until last week, Shum, Jr. starred in the iconic iPod “silhouette” campaign, appeared in two Step Up movies and co-choreographed a number during this year’s Academy Awards. In anticipation of the show’s mid-season premiere tonight, Harry Shum Jr. phoned Movieline to discuss his whirlwind week performing for the Obamas and Oprah, his days dancing for Beyoncé and the unlikely companion he found on the set of Glee
