‘Conservative’ NYT Columnist Douthat: Right-Wingers Don’t Realize Hawaii’s A State

Over the weekend, Dave Weigel resigned as WaPo’s house chronicler of conservatives after revelations of his antipathy toward the people he was covering. Tonight brings us the spectacle of Ross Douthat, an ostensibly conservative columnist at the New York Times.  Appearing on MSNBC’s Ed Schultz show, Douthat proffered precisely zero criticism of anyone or anything liberal.  But he did manage to mock Mike Huckabee as “passive-aggressive.”  For good measure, Douthat suggested that “right-wing” people who question Barack Obama’s place of birth are too dense to realize that Hawaii is a state of the union. The Nation’s Chris Hayes subbed for Schultz tonight, and he didn’t have to strain to elicit criticism of conservatives from Douthat.  After playing a clip of Huckabee stating the apparent fact that he polls better than other Republicans against Obama, Douthat opined. View video here . ROSS DOUTHAT:  I think that’s classically Huckabee. It’s sort of charmingly passive-aggressive. In the clip, Huckabee criticized no one.  What’s “passive-aggressive” about observing that one’s leading in some polls? Later, Hayes invited Douthat to riff off a poll that showed 24% of Americans don’t think Pres. Obama was born in the U.S. DOUHAT: There are two ways to read it, right?  Clearly on the one hand it’s illustrative of a certain kind of paranoia among many Americans, right-wing Americans about Barack Obama. On the other hand, I really think you can overstate the importance of these polls.  There are polls every year that show 42% of Americans believe in UFOs.   HAYES: Also disturbing! DOUTHAT: Also disturbing. But I also wonder, if you took that 21% [sic] and polled them and said what percentage know that being born outside the US — HAYES: Disqualifies — DOUTHAT: Is a disqualification for the presidency. Or if you polled them and said, what percentage know that Hawaii is actually a state?  That sounds like a joke, but– that sounds like a joke — Douthat was interrupted, but his point was clear.  Right-wingers: too thick to realize that Hawaii’s a state. Ross sounds like the quintessential NYT/MSNBC “conservative”: one most interested in ingratiating himself with his liberal masters.

Janet Jackson And Family Visit Michael’s Forest Lawn Grave

Randy, Tito and Jermaine Jackson join their sister to pay their respects a year after MJ’s death. By Eric Ditzian Tito Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Janet Jackson and Randy Jackson visit Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Friday Photo: AP As fans lined up outside Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, on the one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, his family gathered inside to pay their respects to the fallen pop star. Janet Jackson, as well as Randy, Tito and Jermaine, arrived at the cemetery around 11 a.m. PT on Friday (June 25), according to Us Weekly. Janet wore a black trench coat and black skirt as she was escorted in by her brothers. The family entered the cemetery through a back entrance and made their way to the Great Mausoleum, where Michael was laid to rest . The mausoleum’s architectural design was inspired by the Campo Santo in Italy, an elaborate cemetery constructed in the 13th century and used as a burial ground for Italian elites for hundreds of years. The building was not open to fans on the anniversary of Jackson’s death. Michael’s children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, did not accompany the other Jackson family members. According to Us, the children were last seen in Hawaii on Thursday with Michael’s mother, Katherine, who is their legal guardian. “Sorry Big Bro, for not getting ur children there on the anniversary of ur last day. I tried,” Randy wrote on his Twitter account . Katherine was on hand Friday in Gary, Indiana, Michael’s hometown, to unveil a marble memorial and hold what was described as a cell phone vigil outside his childhood home. “I am not in support of the Gary event/trip or whatever it is. I’m tired but I promise to continue this discussion first thing in the morn,” Randy tweeted. MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend. Don’t miss the one-hour special “Michael Jackson’s Influence on Music,” airing tonight at 6:30 p.m. on MTV. Megan Fox Says It’ll Be ‘Years’ Before She Marries Brian Austin Green

‘I’m going to be 44 when I get married,’ the ‘Jonah Hex’ star jokes about her wedding plans. By Jocelyn Vena Megan Fox Photo: Paramount Pictures Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green confirmed that they were engaged earlier this week, and while it’s not the pair’s first engagement , Fox admits that she doesn’t think of this newer engagement as take two. “[It’s] really not a re-engagement … nothing is different,” Fox told UsWeekly.com at Thursday’s “Jonah Hex” premiere in Los Angeles, where the film’s female lead sported a sexy red dress, but no engagement ring. The couple reportedly lost the two-carat ring mere hours after getting engaged in Hawaii on June 1. Fox, 24, has already been with Green, 36, for six years, and she admits that she’s in no rush to walk down the aisle. “It’s going to be years!” she explained. “I’m going to be 44 when I get married!” And, it seems that Green is keeping with the current trend of hands-on wedding-planning grooms,

USC-Hawaii Still On For College Football’s Opening Weekend

Among the weirder penalties levied in USC’s general direction by the Committee On Infractions was the elimination of their 13th regular-season game, which was actually the season opener at Hawaii. Some background on why this is possible in the first place: The Sept. 2 game at Aloha Stadium was in doubt because sanctions levied against USC last week prevented exemptions from the current 12-game NCAA limit. A 1955 bylaw known as the “Hawaii Exemption” permits visiting teams to play one game more than the NCAA maximum if traveling to Hawaii. The rule was established to allow teams to schedule an extra home game to recoup lost revenue from traveling outside the continental 48. It’s Hawaii, however, that would have really suffered the hit to the wallet here with the loss of a home contest, and the NCAA has agreed to push the docking of a 13th game back a year : “We want to thank the committee for granting this relief,” said Todd Dickey, USC’s senior vice president for administration. “It recognizes the serious financial impacts game cancellation would have had to the university and state of Hawaii, as well as the fans and supporters of USC who have already made travel arrangements.” Yes, won’t someone think of the fans with the means to jet off to the islands to watch their team administer a bloodbath? Or of the certain four-letter sports network that stood to lose the nightcap of its opening-day coverage bonanza? The reality is the estimated million-dollar payday is one Hawaii’s cash-strapped athletic department could ill afford to lose. Coincidentally, “a million” is also the number of offensive yards the Trojans are expected to record in Honolulu. (Thank you!)

Against the Wishes of Arizona Lawmakers, America Is Getting More Diverse

Preliminary census data show that America’s melting pot is meltier than ever, with racial minorities now making up more than one-third of the nation’s population. Pretty soon the “minorities” will be in the majority, as they are in four states (California, New Mexico, Hawaii and Texas, where everything is bigger, anyway). AP reports that a Latino baby boom, aging baby boomers and more multiracial Americans are responsible for the trend. And then there are the paranoid and overwhelmingly white tea partiers who went into hiding. That must account for at least a couple dozen fewer Caucasians showing up in the census, no?

Five Idol Replacements for Simon Who’d Be Better Than Howard Stern

To be honest, Howard Stern’s honesty makes him the ideal replacement for Simon Cowell on American Idol. But since Stern’s never going to find a job that’s more perfect for him than the one he’s got, he’s not going to make it happen. And so what? We’ve come up with five stars who’d be better than Stern in Cowell’s chair because they’d be good, and, hey, novel idea, they might take the gig. 1. Harry Connick Jr.: Did you see him on the show this past week? So insulting, so abrasive, so perfect. OK, so, the digs at everybody from gay Ellen DeGeneres to diabetic Crystal Bowersox were gags, but he had the bite to pull ‘em off. On Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show, the Idol host didn’t sound averse to the idea of Connick as judge. And neither did Connick. The crooner said he’d be up for the job as long as “they let [him] wear a wig and have a gavel.” 2. Adam Lambert: Outside of Stern, there’s not a pick that would raise more eyebrows—or generate more heat—than this glam alum. If his guest mentor stint on Elvis night was an audition, he passed when he dropped a “boring” on Andrew Garcia. If you wonder if he’d put his burgeoning music career on hold to go Hollywood, then ask yourself what Elvis would have done? (For the answer, see Blue Hawaii—and about 30 other flicks.) 3. Jamie Foxx: The man’s talented, versatile and halfway to an EGOT necklace. Need more? He likes Idol—with next week’s scheduled appearance, he’ll be a repeat guest mentor. Need more? He told Party Girl’s Cristina Gibson he’d “love” Cowell’s job. Need more? Tim Urban endorsed him. (OK, we should’ve stopped when we were ahead.) 4. Nygel Lythgoe: What do you say to the guy who had the British bite to suggest the show’s entire judging panel be gutted? “You’re hired.” And, yes, we know he’s busy with So You Think You Can Dance, but as a onetime Idol exec, he’s got experience juggling both shows. 5. Paula Abdul: We miss her. Idol reportedly misses her. And judging by her flirtation with Star Search, she misses her talent-show self, too. There’s still time to get her—and the show’s mojo—back. Before Cowell steals her away for The X Factor.

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Is ‘A Loud Warning Shot,’ Experts Say

Kanye’s message is, ‘I’m here to smack you,’ RapRadar’s Elliott Wilson says. By MTV News Staff, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali Kanye West Photo: Amy Sussman/Getty Images Kanye West returned with a bang on Friday when his new track “Power” leaked online, making it the first offering from Ye’s highly-anticipated next album. The MC has been keeping a relatively low profile in recent months, following his interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards and subsequent apologies. The Symbolyc One-produced “Power” finds West back in MC mode, firing away at his detractors and giving fans a preview of what’s to come on his next project, which he’s been recording in Hawaii with a slew of other artists and producers. “I’m living in the 21st Century, doing something mean to it,” West spits on the opening lines. “Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it/ Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it/ I guess every superhero need his theme music.” MTV News spoke with a group of hip-hop pundits — both our own and from the wider rap journalism world — to get their takes on West’s latest number. “The song comes out, and it’s like everything stops,” Minya Oh of MissInfo.TV said. “It’s a really strong, aggressive beat that’s not street, but the drums are undeniable. But the lyrics really got me.” West delivers his trademark punchlines, but his rhymes are also imbued with a biting aggressiveness, particularly when he targets “Saturday Night Live.” “F— ‘SNL’ and the whole cast,” West rhymes. “Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass. More specifically they can kiss my a–hole.” ” ‘SNL’ caught a bad one,” RapRadar.com’s Elliott Wilson said. “[The song is] real rap, like, ‘I want my spot back.’ [It’s like Kanye saying,] ‘Drake is cool; Wayne is my man; Jay, I bow to him, he’s a legend, he’s my father in this — but I’m here to smack you.’ It’s sport: ‘F— all of you, I’m the best.’ ” “Kanye is tired of being messed with,” MTV News’ Jayson Rodriguez said. “The same way we got tired of the Kanye rants or the Kanye antics, he’s pushing back: ‘You know what, I’m tired of you f—in’ with me.’ “It’s a really loud warning shot,” Rodriguez added. “Anybody who had the feeling, ‘Watch out for Kanye’s next album,’ this song confirmed: You were right.” The combination of an embattled West, rapping with the spirit of an underdog but delivering masterful arrangements is nothing new, according to MTV News’ Shaheem Reid. “To me, that kind of embodies his whole career,” Reid said of “Power.” “Because there’s always been people that doubted Kanye; there’s always been people, for one reason or another, that just don’t like the dude. But just like Kobe Bryant wins championships, Kanye West makes classic albums.” Everyone agreed that West now has the game’s attention. “Kanye did what he’s supposed to do,” MTV News’ Sean Lee said. “He said he was back, and artists at his level, when they come back big with records, it’s got to be an event.” What do you think of “Power”? Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Producer Explains How Song Happened

Symbolyc One got a text saying, ‘Kanye is loving your stuff, he said he’s about to change your life.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: MTV News Kanye West has aligned a murderer’s row of producers for his forthcoming album , including Pete Rock, the RZA and Q-Tip. But “Power,” the first track to emerge from the Chicago MC’s highly-anticipated LP, wasn’t produced by one of the aforementioned acclaimed beatsmiths. Instead, underground producer Symbolyc One manned the boards for the number. The Dallas-based producer (a.k.a. S1) has previously worked with Ghostface, Slim Thug, and Chamillionaire, but he’s hardly a household name. “The way it came together, I work with Rhymefest,” S1 told MTV News about the song, referring to another Chicago MC. “I did like four joints on his album. And one day, out the blue, I got a text from Rhymefest that said, ‘Kanye is loving your stuff, he said he’s about to change your life.’ Two days later, I got an e-mail that said my flight to Hawaii [where West recorded much of the album] leaves in three hours! So I was on a flight, and it just happened like that. I went down and stayed for like two weeks, banged out some joints. “The ‘Power’ joint that we did, it was actually a track that I already made and gave to Rhymefest, and he just so happened to play it for Kanye in the studio and he loved it. So when I got out to Hawaii, Kanye had already recorded to it.” A month later, S1 returned to Hawaii and heard “Power” again, this time with more “polish” added by ‘Ye, who co-produced the song. However, S1 picked the sample that drives the record: a snippet of British progressive rock band King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man.” Initially, he didn’t think West would be interested in the beat, because a drum break resembles a sound the rapper already visited on “Crack Music,” a song from one of his previous albums. But West showed a heavy interest in the song, and used it to fire back at his detractors: “I’m living in the 21st Century, doing something mean to it,” ‘Ye raps on the first verse. “Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it/ Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it/ I guess every superhero need his theme music.” “It was incredible,” the producer said. “We would just listen to the joint in the studio over and over, with the lights turned down and these layers of lights on in the studio. And we would bang it loud, over and over.” In addition to producing, S1 is a part of a trio billed as the Strange Fruit Project, who have been releasing material since 2004. Their next project A Dreamer’s Journey — which S1 described as “alternative hip-hop” — is set for fall release; he and his production parter Caleb oversaw all the material. In the meantime, S1 said he’s fielding phone calls and learning as much as he can from West. “They kind of welcomed me into the family,” S1 said. “I’ve been doing a lot of work with him. He’s just a good dude. He has a super-good heart. He really took care of me and made me feel like a part of the family. And I’m so grateful for the position he’s put me in right now.” What do you think about Kanye West’s new song? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Kanye West
