AP Report Avoids Noting Worst-Ever Month for Housing Units Completed, Worst Nov. Ever in Starts and Permits

Leave it to the Associated Press, with the assistance of the “magic” of seasonal adjustments, to make the November housing market appear as if it was a bit better than the two months that preceded it. It wasn't. Thursday, the wire service grabbed the single crumb that was available, namely the Census Bureau's report earlier that day that annualized, seasonally adjusted housing starts had increased by about 4% and turned it into a decidedly positive headline: “Home construction up after 2 months of declines.” AP Economics Writer Jeannine Aversa watered down the headline in her very first sentence, describing the “up” part of the headline as a “nudge.” That's nowhere near enough. The available evidence indicates that November may have been the worst month the homebuilding industry has had in 4-5 decades of related recordkeeping. read more

Medical marijuana & flying: If paperwork checks out, Denver Police and the TSA say, “Get high”

It won’t make the body scans or perverse groping security pat-downs any easier to handle, but medical marijuana patients traveling to one of five states from DIA can now pack their cannabis openly instead of, say, hiding it in a shampoo bottle. http://www.jackherer.com/archives/medical-marijuana-flying-if-paperwork-checks-o… added by: JackHerer

Leave it to (Mel Gibson in The) Beaver (Trailer)!

They say good friends are hard to find. If you’re Mel Gibson, they’ve gotta be really scarce these days. Luckily, fellow star Jodie Foster has somehow stuck by him. That makes one person in Hollywood. Her new directorial effort, The Beaver, stars Mel as a mentally ill guy communicating through a beaver puppet. Seriously, this is a real movie. PostPartisan – Sec. Gates’s blunt message to the Senate and Sen. McCain

My editor popped into my office to ask “What's the headline?” out of the release of the long-awaited report on the repeal of don't ask don't tell. The answer was pretty easy. Defense Secretary Robert Gates wants the Senate to repeal don't ask don't tell before the courts force him to eliminate the policy. He urged that it be done during the lame-duck session and that those standing in the way “are rolling the dice that this policy will not be abruptly overturned by the courts.” Got that, John McCain? added by: mik661

Stimulus Allows Big Polluters to Bypass Environmental Regulations

Photo: Vidor , Wikimedia, CC In its haste to jump-start “shovel-ready” stimulus projects, the Obama administration allowed many of the biggest polluters in the nation to sidestep key environmental regulations. The federal government made a stunning 179,000 “categorical exclusions” that allowed corporations — many with disastrous environmental records — to use stimulus funding to sponsor projects without submitting them to review under … Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Huffington Post on Religion: ‘Islamophobia’ Bad, Sinead O’Connor’s Vatican-Hating Smears Good

The Huffington Post would like to present itself as an oasis of religious tolerance. When they started their Religion section, Arianna Huffington decried that “all too often, when talking about it, we end up talking at each other instead of with each other.” Weeks ago, they published Nida Khan lamenting conservative Islamophobia , as “a vocal minority of extremists to capitalize and advance on their bigotry and xenophobia.” The writer cited Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin, Rick Lazio and Peter King. That was one of many Huff-Po pieces feeling the pain of American Muslims, victims of vicious midterm politics. But that same Huffington Post doesn’t mind promoting “Rome-o-phobia,” vile anti-Catholic screeds from bigoted leftists that just happened to enjoy ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul on national TV. Arianna Huffington published Sinead O’Connor’s “An Open Letter to the Pope,” carrying flagrantly false statements, such as “not one member of The Vatican has publicly displayed an iota of humility over this issue. Instead each person who has spoken has done so most arrogantly and dismissively.” Here’s the latest line from O’Connor in the U.K. Guardian, where the headline says “The Vatican is a nest of devils.” Or, to be more precise: “The Vatican is a nest of devils and a haven for criminals. It’s evil, the very top of the toppermost is evil.” O’Connor is clear what has to happen – those responsible have to go. “And when all the those guys stand down we should take back the church for us.” Would she like to see a democratically elected pope? “Do we need a fucking pope? Why do we need a pope? Christ doesn’t need a representative. Ten years from now the church will be nothing resembling what it has been.” This is the kind of “religion” spokesman The Huffington Post wants to promote — a washed-up one-hit wonder who asserts that a global church with a billion adherents is about to fall apart in the next ten years — or if not fall apart, become a haven for fashionable, libertine-left, potty-mouthed “philosophers” like Sinead O’Connor. Her article was not a dialogue — a talking-to, instead of a talking-at — it was a vicious monologue. It was just another left-wing Huff-Po celebrity slur.

AP Bashes Christine O’Donnell With Bill Maher’s ‘Witchcraft’ Video Clip

The Associated Press is using a video clip that Bill Maher showed on HBO’s “Real Time” Friday to bash Delaware Republican senatorial nominee Christine O’Donnell. Here’s the headline: Bill Maher Digs Up O’Donnell ‘Witchcraft’ Clip   Inside the piece , things got even dicier: Since O’Donnell’s upset of nine-term Rep. Mike Castle, opponents have unearthed unflattering age-old television clips. The most recent was aired by comedian Bill Maher, who dug up one of O’Donnell’s appearances on his “Politically Incorrect” show in 1999. The context of what led to her comments is not clear, and O’Donnell is laughing while she talks. “I dabbled into witchcraft. I never joined a coven,” she said. ” … I hung around people who were doing these things. I’m not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do,” she said. “… One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar, and I didn’t know it. I mean, there’s little blood there and stuff like that,” she said. “We went to a movie and then had a little midnight picnic on a satanic altar.” Maher said on “Real Time with Bill Maher” that he has more clips of O’Donnell and will continue to air them until she appears on his show.  Here’s what actually happened on Friday’s “Real Time”: So, a conservative hater like Maher has numerous video clips of O’Donnell which he is going to air on his program likely every week until Election Day, and the nation’s leading wire service apparently is going to keep its readers apprised of their contents. And people think there’s a liberal bias in the media.
