Incubus ‘Unpack’ From Hiatus With ‘Promises, Promises’

If Not Now, When? is band’s first studio effort in nearly five years. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Incubus’ Brandon Boyd Photo: MTV News Brandon Boyd knows it’s been a while — almost five years, to be exact — since Incubus last released a new studio album. And, in the time since 2006’s Light Grenades, Incubus have toured the world, released a greatest-hits album, gone on hiatus and even grown up a bit. And though that break was frustrating for the band’s fans (even if there were various side projects and solo albums to tide them over), Boyd said it was necessary. After all, without it, there probably wouldn’t be an Incubus today. “Yes, we’ve been on a ‘hiatus,’ we’ll say, in quotes — I love that word, it’s so heavily connotated — — for the past five years. And it’s not that we were burned out being in a band or being in this band; I think that we, collectively, were feeling like if we didn’t step away from this sort of monster that we created, that it would begin to consume us,” he told MTV News. “And for us to be able to come back and write music that was still pure in its ethic, to us as creative people, that we had to get a nice chunk of real life. And there’s definitely a better way to put that. We had to unpack, basically. “We had to plant some roots, lest we start to write songs about living on a tour bus. … So we had to fall in love, we had to fall out of love, we had to make homes … our drummer had a baby, Michael went off to school, I was exploring a lot of my own singular creative tendencies,” Boyd continued. “We weren’t sitting at home twiddling our thumbs or anything; all of us had a lot to do. And eventually, it got to the point where it was like, ‘It’s time.’ ” Soon, it will be time for If Not Now, When?, Incubus’ first new album since Grenades. It’s due in stores on July 12, and it finds the band exploring wide-screen sonics and space (“I’m hoping people will put the headphones on and just listen,” Boyd said) and, in doing so, also showcases Boyd’s new songwriting prowess. He attempted to say more with fewer words this time around, and his lyrics are given room to sink in — a luxury not available on the band’s previous, more hectic albums. Case in point: new single “Promises, Promises,” which finds him in prime, precise storyteller mode. “I’ve kind of played with the idea of storytelling before, but never so precisely as I have on this album … [on] two songs in particular: ‘Promises, Promises’ and another track called ‘Isadore,’ ” he explained. ” ‘Promises, Promises,’ is a story about a girl and a guy — go figure — and the girl has built up so much armor around herself with the things that she knows how to do. “And so, I used these metaphors in the song of, like, magic, like she’s an illusionist, so she creates these illusions around her,” he continued. “And she’s gotten so good at it that she meets somebody who potentially could be someone that could help her break through those illusions and those walls, she can’t really recognize that he could be the real thing, or they could be the real thing, so she’s asking him for one thing: ‘Don’t make me any promises.’ ” Are you looking forward to Incubus’ new album? Katy Perry Says She Swiped ‘E.T.’ From Three 6 Mafia

Perry’s latest single was actually meant for the Academy Award-winning rap group. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry has already said that when she was writing songs for her Teenage Dream album, her goal was to “make a different ‘movie’ for each song.” So it’s ironic that her latest single, “E.T.,” was actually meant for a group who knows a thing or two about movies … and they’ve got the Academy Award to prove it. “I’ll tell you, it’s funny … this song, I remember writing with Max Martin and Dr. Luke, and there’s this producer they wrote with, named Ammo as well, and they were just showing me different samples of songs or tracks or beats, and they accidentally pulled up this beat, and it was for Three 6 Mafia,” Perry told MTV News. “I heard it and I always knew I wanted to write this futuristic, alienistic song, and they pulled it up and I was like, ‘Wait, I can wrap my head around this. I know this seems like a long shot, but I think I have the perfect material to put on top of this sound.’ And I did, and it really worked out perfectly.” So if you’re one of those Katy fans who’s a bit mystified by the abrupt change of pace of “E.T.” — and its equally left-of-center video — well, then you can sort of understand why: Deep down, it’s actually a Three 6 Mafia track. “It’s a whole different vibe for me. It’s kind of a bit harder, it does have that urban feel underneath it. I think that’s why Kanye added even another layer on top of it,” Perry explained. “And it has … amazing … sonics — I mean, there’s so much to it, there’s a lot in the song if you really put your headphones on and sink into the song.” And that’s just part of what drew Perry to the track in the first place. After all, on Teenage Dream, she set out to make movies … and though it may confound some of her fans, “E.T.” is perhaps the most wonderfully odd movie she’s ever made. And she knows it. “Even teasing people with different images from ‘E.T.,’ people are so perplexed, ” she laughed. “They’re like, ‘Katy Perry, you’re supposed to be Betty Boop! You’re supposed to be wearing pink!’ It’s exciting to be able to push my audience, to be like, ‘There’s always more, I’ve got all of this hidden up my sleeve that I’ve really longed to show people.'” What did you think of Katy’s new video? Soulja Boy Recalls Meeting Dr. Dre, Dubs Himself ‘Lil’ Dre’

‘I was in shock at what he was saying,’ young MC tells Sway during ‘RapFix Live.’ By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway Soulja Boy Tell’em Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Along with 50 Cent, another hip-hop heavyweight may be taking Soulja Boy Tell’em under his wing. During his interview on “RapFix Live” on Thursday (December 2), the 20-year-old rapper talked about meeting Dr. Dre for the first time briefly before one of his concerts. “Everybody knows Dre,” Soulja Boy said of meeting the West Coast icon. “I was in shock at what he was saying. It was just like, I couldn’t believe that he was there.” Apparently, Dre was so unassuming that he caught the young MC off-guard. “My CEO, Jimmy Iovine, had came in the room before he did, and he was like, ‘What’s up, Soulja Boy?’ and we was talking,” Soulja recalled. “And Dre just walked in, like, ‘Soulja!’ And I was like, ‘Oh, is that Dr. Dre?’ And [my boys] were like, ‘Why you ain’t take your shades off?’ I was caught up in the moment, what he was saying, how he appreciate what I do and I’m doing my thang. “Just him telling me that, just meant so much,” Soulja continued. “I was in a point of shock, you feel me?” And like for many other rappers, Dre has been a point of inspiration, but leave it to SB to take the superproducer’s legacy one step further. “Dr. Dre is a legend. I’ve been listening to him since I was in diapers,” Soulja said. “I know my mama been listening to him. Everybody knows that he did so much for hip-hop and … you know, I’m lil’ Dre!” While that title is debatable, the two may work together on Dre’s premium line of headphones, Beats by Dre. “During the ‘Speakers Going Hammer’ , the beats are all through that video and the ‘Speakers Going Hammer’ song is gon’ be in his next commercial,” Soulja said. “That was love. He was like, ‘I like that song. Put that in the commercial.’ Soon, maybe you’ll see some Soulja Boy/ Dr. Dre headphones or something like that.” Until then, the rapper’s been busy dreaming up fresh ideas. “I’ve been thinking about what I could bring. Like, I ain’t want to do just like the headphones,” Soulja shared. “I wanted to do something new to it.” Would you check out Soulja Boy’s headphones? Let us know in the comments!
