Black Millennial Entrepreneur Opens Affordable Vegan Restaurant In Brooklyn

Read the rest here:

T he lack of affordable healthy food options in underserved communities has been an ongoing issue across the country, and a Brooklyn-based millennial entrepreneur is looking to change that. Francesca Chaney , 22, opened up a restaurant called Sol Sips in an effort to introduce affordable vegan cuisine to Bushwick, Live Civil reported. #LiveCivil : 22-Year-Old Opens Sol Sips, Affordable Vegan Restaurant In Brooklyn https://t.co/x5JheCbT4l pic.twitter.com/8375m8xK71 — Live Civil (@LiveCivil) November 10, 2018 Chaney was inspired to open her own restaurant after noticing the lack of healthy dining options in her community, the news outlet writes. She started making her own juices at home and eventually began selling them at local food festivals. After seeing success with the festivals, she decided to open a brick-and-mortar store earlier this year. To ensure that her meals and beverages are affordable, Chaney’s restaurant allows customers to pay what they wish on Saturday afternoons. “I guess there was this assumption that I was doing this to be a hero or something,” she said in an interview with Elle . “[But] it was for me first and foremost. Then it extended to community because just living in East New York in high school… and knowing that there were not options for me to have a healthy vegetarian meal outside of my home… just because the option isn’t there doesn’t mean that we’re not seeking the option.” She hopes that her entrepreneurial journey will inspire other Black millennials to become business owners and that they will create ventures that will positively impact their communities. There has been a major effort to bring juice bars and other affordable healthy food options to impoverished neighborhoods. Hip-hop artists Styles P and Jadakiss launched Juices For Life, a chain of juice bars created to bring healthy meals to neighborhoods that are considered food deserts. Earlier this month, it was announced that Styles P would be partnering with PETA to promote plant-based diets. Bella Hadid Gets Body-Shamed Over THESE Lingerie Photos

Bella Hadid is getting some major hate, and this time it’s not over those weird nudes she took with her sister Gigi . This time, Bella was so excited to show off her runway-ready body in lingerie. Some body-shamers, however, decided that she looked too thin — and flooded her with deprecating comments. Bella Hadid shared a series of sultry lingerie pics on Instagram. Wearing black lingerie and snakeskin boots, she excitedly gushed in the captions. “@victoriassecret fittings today,” she announced with glee. “i can’t wait for you to see all of the beautiful outfits,” Bella raved. Showing that she knows that this is a big deal, Bella added: “I’m so grateful to be a part of the show again.” Bella looks genuinely amazing in these pics. She wrote that she is “feeling happier and healthier than ever.” Realizing that she would probably face some trolling, Bella decided to head them off. “All body types are different,” Bella reminded her followers in parentheses. “And,” she continued, different bodies “react differently to a great workout routine and a healthy diet.” She’s absolutely right. Some bodies will radically change their shape. Others may have improved health, but their overall shape won’t change. Unfortunately, body-shamers and concern trolls took to Bella’s comments to blast her slender figure. “Feed her somebody,” demanded one hater. “Skin and bone!” exclaimed another. “That photo shows everything but health!” “Oh honey, you look like an Avatar in the second pic especially,” one wrote. We’re sure that James Cameron is just glad that anyone thinks of that movie enough to make a hateful comparison. “I can’t be the only one who sees that!” the commenter continued. “You look frightening!” That last line is only not an insult on Halloween, folks. “Skin and bone,” exclaimed another, unoriginally. “That second page is quite frankly disturbing.” Some of these people are acting like they’ve never seen a Victoria’s Secret model’s ribs before. “We know that Bella could look better if she eats properly,” insisted another troll. That hater reasoned: “cuz she wasn’t looking like that before which makes us sure that she’s starving herself day after day.” Another lamented: “I will never understand why bones protruding through skin is considered beautiful.” Folks, if bones were protruding from her skin, she’d be bleeding and Instagram would have removed the photos for T&S violations. Another concern troll tried to pretend that they’re really on Bella’s side in a lengthy, body-shaming post. “I have nothing against being slim,” wrote this person. “But this is unhealthy on so many levels.” “Shame on @victoriassecret for encouraging and promoting this totally unrealistic image,” the commenter continued. The hater concluded: “We must put an end to the concept of looks = value.” That last line may be accurate, but this person seems to be devaluing Bella because of her looks. Hypocrisy much? Also, Bella is literally a model. if there is ever a time for someone’s looks to matter, it’s in the modeling world. Some came to Bella’s defense, and pointed out the double standard applied to women that does not seem to be applied to men. “You can see the ribs of Hue Jackman in Wolverine,” a commenter wrote. “But I doubt you think he’s unhealthy.” It’s true — the only men who seem to get this kind of treatment are those with exceptionally slender bone structures. Women, in the mean time, get hate if they’re slender or face what’s essentially the same kind of concern trolling if they’re plus size. Demi Lovato Celebrates 90 Days of Sobriety!

Well, it certainly hasn’t been easy traveling, but Demi Lovato has reached a major milestone in her long road to recovery. Lovato is still in rehab and has not spoken to the media in several months, but her mother, Dianna De La Garza, shared an encouraging update with fans over the weekend. Appearing on Maria Menounos’ Sirius radio show, De La Garza revealed that Demi recently celebrated 90 days of sobriety. “She has 90 days,” De La Garza said. “I couldn’t be more thankful or more proud of her because addiction being a disease, it’s work. It’s very hard,” she added. “It’s not easy, and there are no shortcuts.” Back in July,  Lovato suffered a heroin overdose that nearly claimed her life. After being hospitalized for a week, the singer was transported to an Arizona rehabilitation facility, where she’s been a patient ever since. Demi has left the facility several times to meet with addiction specialists in Chicago, and her mother has been her traveling companion for each trip. De La Garza revealed to Menounos that she found out about her daughter’s overdose via text messages from friends who reached out to offer support after reading the news online. “The one text message that clued me in on what was going on said, ‘I just saw on TMZ and I’m so sorry,’” De La Garza said. “Before I could get to TMZ, I got the phone call from her assistant and she said, ‘We’re at the hospital.’ So then I knew, okay, she’s not gone,” she recalled. “ “She’s here. And I said, ‘What’s going on?’ And the words that I heard are just a nightmare for any parent: ‘Demi overdosed.’” In the months since her overdose, Demi has kept a low profile, but those who know the singer best say she’s 100 percent devoted to hard work of recovery. Lovato issued a statement to fans on her Instagram page prior to checking into rehab: “I now need time to focus on my sobriety and road to recovery,” she wrote. “The love you all have shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out of this on the other side.” Those who know her best, say that Demi has benefited tremendously from the love and support of her family, friends, and fans. We wish her all the best as she fights to reclaim her health. View Slideshow: Demi Lovato: Everything We Know About Her Overdose So Far

Luann de Lesseps: I’m Way Too Busy to Be an Alcoholic!

There have been a number of insulting claims about Luann de Lesseps’ rehab stay . Some of her co-stars think she only sought treatment to stay out of jail. But Luann herself made a claim, just before she returned to rehab this summer, that she is “too busy to be an alcoholic.” The timing was … not ideal. Recovery Today Magazine ‘s podcast has a pretty specific demographic. That is why this particular interview — one of so many that Luann did over the summer — didn’t immediately catch everyone’s attention. But Radar Online reported this week on the contents of the July interview in which she claimed that she was “too busy to be an alcoholic.” “My journey is so long,” Luann says. “Sixteen years ago,” she narrates. “I was in the Swiss Alps and I had a car accident with my children in the car.” “I fell down the side of the mountain and my Range Rover rolled off the side of the road,” she describes the harrowing event. “I thought that I killed myself and killed my children,” Luann shares. “I had just come from a tea party with Elle McPherson.” When asked if she had been drinking, she replied: “No! I was coming from a tea party. I was not drinking there. No.” “Well,” Luann reconsiders. “I was having red wine at dinner. It is European. You know, red wine at dinner. Red wine.” To be fair, that is pretty standard if she consumed it in moderation. Luann says that, back then, “I never had a problem with alcohol.” “But,” Luann says. “I did have a problem as of recent.” She then explains that this problem arose “because I was self-medicating.” Specifically, she was self-medicating as a coping mechanism for the lingering trauma of that ghastly brush with death in the Alps. “Listen, I am too busy to be an alcoholic,” Luann declares. She then says, curiously: “I am not an alcoholic because alcohol doesn’t work for me.” After that odd statement, she explains how she began to use substances following that horrifying accident. “I had post-traumatic stress from the accident,” Luann reveals. “Ever since then,” Luann continues. “I woke up at 3 o’clock in the morning.” “So, I would shake,” Luann confesses. “So I started taking sleeping pills and Xanax to get myself together.” “But I was not a big drinker,” at the time, Luann says. “I was a mother, a wife, a countess.” It was more recently that she began to struggle after using alcohol to cope. “Being arrested and going to jail was bottom,” Luann says. “Going to jail was rock bottom.” “The night that I got arrested, I shouldn’t have gotten arrested,” she claims. “But it was the perfect storm,” Luann continues. “Life was like, ‘you got a problem, girlfriend.’ I chose to go to rehab.” Luann then explains why she says that she should not have gone to jail after the December 2017 incident. “It happens to people all the time,” she says. “People should be in the hospital, not in jail. I was like, ‘Why am I here?’ I’m only drunk.” It was … not her best interview. And it happened right before Luann relapsed and then returned to rehab. We think that we can translate some of her statements, however. When Luann says that she’s too busy to be an alcoholic, she’s reminding herself as much as anyone else that alcohol would interfere with her life. When she describes her accident, we’re inclined to believe that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. (She had her kids with her, folks — the alcoholism came later.) When she says that she shouldn’t have been arrested, she means that health issues such as addiction should be treated, not criminalized. In any event, here’s hoping she gets treatment, and it takes.

Jill Duggar Offers Lame Parenting Advice, Gets Roasted on Instagram!

The Duggars really enjoy offering parenting advice to their fans. We're sure some folks appreciate this tendency, but it seems that just as many resent the unsolicited counsel. After all, the Duggars could really benefit from tending to their own backyard, so when they get a tad too preachy, their fans are often quick to call them out. This phenomenon took place in a big way this week, when Jill Duggar offered up some painfully obvious insights on parenting on her Instagram page.   1. Jill the Mom Jill is a mother of two, and she obviously takes parenting very seriously. She homeschools her kids and loves to share parenting tips on social media. 2. Helping or Hurting? Some fans find Jill’s tips helpful, while others feel that she tends to be a bit preachy while offering advice that’s already well-known to most parents. 3. Obvious Child Recently, Jill posted a new post on her blog about the importance of allowing children to play outside. 4. Yes, Really Apparently, Jill is under the impression that “let them play outside” is some sort of groundbreaking approach to parenting. 5. Jill Needs to Chill Needless to say, fans weren’t exactly blown away with Jill’s helpful hints. And many of them were quick to let her know that. 6. Sarcastic “Wow!” “A friend of ours called recently to check in,” Jill wrote. “She said that when her girls were little and her husband was in school she would take her littles outside and give them a ball to play with and that they’d play for quite awhile before she brought them home, tired and ready for bed.” View Slideshow

Cameran Eubanks: Southern Charm Star Apologizes For Vaccine-Related Comments

Southern Charm is no stranger to controversy — most notably the stunning rise and fall of Thomas Ravenel . This time, it’s Cameran Eubanks who’s been put in the hotseat. Not by police, but by her own followers. When she shared her opinion about vaccines, the backlash was so intense that she deleted her tweet — and apologized. On Thursday, Southern Charm star Cameran Eubanks decided to encourage her followers to make responsible health decisions. She posted a photo of the bandage on her arm, announcing that she had just receive her flu vaccine for this year. Cameran then encouraged her fans and followers to do the same. It’s not just the right thing to do for themselves — it can help to protect others, including those with compromised immune systems. The backlash to her post was enough that she promptly deleted it. After deleting her post, she shared an undeserved apology message with her followers. “I just deleted a post that I made today about my belief in getting the flu shot,” she began. “Never did I think it would cause such a fuss,” she explains. A few years ago, it might not have. But thanks to internet algorithms, dangerous misinformation spreads like a virus. “I’m sorry to all I offended who don’t believe in vaccinating themselves and their children,” she writes. “If you do not vaccinate I do not think you are stupid or wrong,” Cameran generously claims. Not everyone would be so charitable in their assessment of people who endanger their children and others by believing falsehoods. “We just disagree,” she writes. “I have always said I will not talk about religion or politics on social media,” Cameran concludes. “And now I’m adding vaccines too.” This is not the first time that Cameran has been taken aback by an unexpected controversy. “Palmer had hers today,” Cameran shared about her 11-month-old. “I played baby shark and not even a whimper. Couldn’t believe it. God bless that annoying ass song!” Her Southern Charm costar, the incomparable Patricia Altschul, also posted on Thursday after she received her flu shot. “@caconover is right! I just had my flu shot and I can only walk backwards #southerncharm #medicine.” Craig Conover, everyone’s favorite formerly reformed playboy who talks like a frat guy, has some wild opinions about vaccines. He called them a “crazy government shot” that would force him to walk backwards for the rest of his life. Honestly, that’s not the worst thing that we’ve heard an anti-vaxxer say, but … that’s not saying much. Patricia was not the only one who leapt to Cameran’s defense. “Um your post literally reminded me to sign up for ours,” wrote one fan. “Appointments booked. Thank you for posting about it!” “It’s not a matter of belief or disbelief, nor opinion. It’s a matter of science and facts,” correctly asserted another fan. That comment continued: “Vaccines save lives and suffering and those who choose not to certainly have the right to that choice, but yeah, they are wrong.” “My family doesn’t get the flu shot,” wrote another commenter. “And I still found nothing wrong with your post!” Vaccinations aren’t just a personal decision — they help protect those with compromised immune systems through “herd immunity.” Someone whose immune system doesn’t function at full capacity cannot be vaccinated, so they are vulnerable to the flu — or something worse, like measles. But everyone with whom they come into contact is vaccinated, then they are insulated by the “herd” and less likely to be exposed to a contagion. As for the theories about vaccines being dangerous … some of that is misinformation, and some is fearmongering. (Personal note: I am one of the one-in-a-million people who had a strongly adverse reaction to a vaccination as an infant; the real virus would have been worse and I’m glad that I was vaccinated) Vaccines do not cause autism, but even if they did, we would all rather see a child be autistic than die of a preventable disease. Alaskan Bush People: Renewed for Season 9… with a Catch!

A year ago ago at this time, we were unsure if Alaskan Bush People would return for an eighth season. To be frank, we were unsure whether Ami Brown would even be alive right now. The veteran reality star had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and her prognosis was grim. But here we are now, and, we’re so very happy to say, here Ami is now: still alive, still kicking, still starring on Alaskan Bush People. The Discovery Channel hit recently wrapped filming on Season 8, which focused on the family moving from Alaska to Washington because Ami had to be closer to doctors who could assist with her pressing medical needs. It hasn’t been an easy adjustment, especially because the Browns can never go back home , but it beats the alternative, right? Again: Ami is alive. And now we’ve received word that the show is as well. Alaskan Bush People is coming back for Season 9. With Ami on the mend, the central storyline will move from her health battle to the struggles of Matt Brown, who announced last month that he is headed for rehab . This is bad news for the family, but actually positive news from the view of Discovery Channel executives. It has given them new content for future episodes. “Everyone is interested to see if he is able to overcome his addiction battle,” an insider tells Radar Online of the reaction to Matt’s admission. Upon confirming he is seeking professional assistance, this is what Brown said to People Magazine: “I struggle with substance abuse, and after a year of ups and downs, I decided to return to treatment. “I’m really grateful for everyone’s support and hope to have my life back on track soon.” Matt is the oldest of all Ami and Billy’s children. Back in 2016, he checked into treatment after being arrested for DUI in Juneau, Alaska. According to Radar Online, he remained on the straight and narrow, fully on the wagon… until last year, when he started drinking again to cope with his his mother’s tragic diagnosis. A terminal illness for a parent is an understandable trigger for anyone that has dependency issues. In an interview with People, Ami touched on Matt having to go to rehab prior to the Season 8 finale being shot and said: “It’s hard not having one of my babies here with us. He was so strong for me, and I want to be strong for him.” We wish him the best. And we’re excited for Season 9! View Slideshow: Alaskan Bush People: 13 Secrets They Don’t Want You to Know

Pooch Hall’s Reported DUI Arrest Sheds Light On Black People Facing Intoxication Charges

P olice reportedly arrested another high-profile Black man for a DUI on Wednesday. Cops apprehended Pooch Hall , who starred on “The Game,” for driving under the influence of alcohol and felony child endangerment, according to TMZ . RELATED: Tiger Woods Re-Enters Rehab Following DUI Arrest Hall’s arrest highlights the arrest rates of Black people when it comes to DUI charges. The statistics — which are conflicting and scarce — are still alarming when it comes to these arrests. 'Ray Donovan' Actor Pooch Hall Arrested for DUI and Letting 2-Year-Old Drive https://t.co/YnCPyUlqMh — TMZ (@TMZ) October 4, 2018 As recently as 1973, the drunk-driving arrest rate for Black adults in the United States was nearly twice as high as that for whites, according to available data from the  National Institutes of Health . More recent FBI data in 2016 showed a higher DUI arrest for Black people as compared to other races except for whites. There were 108,881 reported DUI arrests of African Americans, according to the bureau. The data on drinking-related traffic accidents and alcohol-impaired driving seems to also be mixed. Some statistics did show an overrepresentation of Blacks when it comes to those events, indicating the group faces a greater risk of potential injury and fatalities. Hall, unlike many other Black drivers who may drive drunk, and his 2-year-old son didn’t lose their lives or sustain any injuries. The actor is, however, reportedly in major trouble after having allegedly let his toddler child try to drive his vehicle because he was intoxicated. Witnesses had called 911 after seeing the toddler trying to hold the steering wheel while sitting in Hall’s lap. Their car veered off the road and did hit a parked vehicle, but they weren’t hurt. The actor, who had a reported blood alcohol level of .25, which is more than 3 times the legal limit, was taken to jail. Police set his bail at $100,000. The star’s wife took custody of their son after the incident.
