Teacher Feeds Kids Semen Cookies, Pleads No Contest, Gets 25 Years

Mark Berndt, a former L.A. elementary school teacher charged with blindfolding students and feeding them his semen, is going to prison for 25 years. Accused of spoon-feeding kids cookies laced with his own semen, he agreed to plead no contest to all charges, an attorney for some of the victims said. Berndt plans to enter the legal equivalent of guilty pleas to 23 charges. Teacher Feeds Kids Semen, Will Plead No Contest The plea agreement, first reported by the Daily News of Los Angeles, calls for Berndt to be sentenced to 25 years in state prison for the offenses. John Manly, an attorney who represents 30 Miramonte Elementary School students and their parents, said he was notified of the plea by prosecutors. Manly called the agreement a victory for his young clients and said that the families appreciate being treated “with decency and dignity” by prosecutors. “He’s going to jail essentially for the rest of his life,” he said. “You can’t ask for more than that.” He said that prosecutors urged a plea deal for the disgraced educator because “they were concerned about re-traumatizing the children at trial.” Berndt taught at a south Los Angeles school for more than 30 years. The allegations against him came to light thanks to a drug store photo technician. After dozens of photos of blindfolded third-graders surfaced, he reported them to police. Investigators found a plastic spoon in Berndt’s classroom trash bin. Tests found traces of semen on it. According to prosecutors, Berndt used the semen-coated cookies for “tasting games” with students. He was removed from the classroom in January 2011. Berndt was fired and the Los Angeles Unified School District then paid him $40,000 to drop his appeal of the firing, a move that brought heavy criticism. The district said it was done to quell a threat and get him away from kids immediately, but the payoff was nevertheless controversial for obvious reasons. Dozens of lawsuits and claims were filed on behalf of victims. According to reports. 63 cases have been settled for a total of $29.5 million, and 71 are pending. “We’re focused on the civil cases and settling them in a manner that is respectful of the health and educational needs of students and their families,” he said. The case led to a wide-ranging overhaul of how the district handles allegations of sexual abuse after previous complaints about Berndt were ignored. It also showed how slowly state officials act to censure teachers and led to a flurry of allegations of teacher-student sex abuse in this district and others. Manly denounced the district and its administrators for allowing Berndt to continue teaching after there had been complaints about him in the 1990s. “For all intents and purposes  this man murdered these children emotionally,” he said, noting all of the children are in therapy as a result of his actions. Shortly after Berndt’s arrest, the district temporarily removed all 76 of the school’s teachers, along with staff and administrators, putting them on leave. Six months later, when the new school year began, 43 returned to a restructured school with a new principal. The rest either retired or went to new schools. None was accused of any wrongdoing.

Dear Bossip: My Boyfriend Has Bad Hygiene And It Has Caused Me Trips To The OB/GYN

Dear Bossip , I’ve read so many reader letters that I decided to ask a question of my own. While in college, I dated a guy that I met through a mutual friend. I initially wasn’t interested, but he pursued me and eventually won me over. It wasn’t until we became sexually active that I realized he had disgusting personal hygiene. After going down on me, I noticed that I had a strange odor “down there” and went to go see my OB/GYN. She said I had Bacterial Vaginosis, which is an infection and sometimes could be considered a STD. I was treated, but every time my boyfriend went down on me, it happened again. I ended up with at least 3 other BV infections. My OB/GYN told me that I had to tell my boyfriend about his dental hygiene and how it was affecting me, but I couldn’t find the words. So, I tried an experiment. I hid his toothbrush to see if he would notice. After at least 2 days, he never mentioned it and never replaced it. I was disgusted. We eventually ended up breaking up for other reasons. Fast forward to today, we have been back in contact and currently are in a long distance relationship. He came to visit me and his dental hygiene is improved, but still nowhere near what it needs to be. On top of that, he wears clothes with stains on them, coughs with his mouth wide open and doesn’t wash his hands! He explains it as, “I’m a real man.” His family says that he’s been doing questionable things with his hygiene for years. How in the world do I address this topic? – Germaphobe Dear Ms. Germaphobe , Ma’am! Why are you in a relationship with a “man” who refuses to take care of his personal hygiene? You will open and spread your legs to a man who is giving you diseases, and infecting your body with his bad breath and unsanitary ways, but won’t say anything to him about it? Does that make any logical sense? I’m thinking there’s something suspect and questionable about you! There is no way in hell I would lay down with someone for a second and third time and they are causing damage and harm to my body. Hell to the naw! And, no, he is not a “real man,” with his old nasty a**! A real man will wash his a**, brush his teeth, floss, use deodorant, have some decorum, and table manners. A real man doesn’t walk around with stains on his clothes, coughing with his mouth wide open, and not washing his hands. That is just nasty and trifling. How can you sleep with this man? If he is doing all of this, then, I am certain he is not properly washing his behind. And, I can only imagine that he doesn’t wear clean underwear, socks, and, nor does he wash his neck, ears, and underarms. How can he walk around for two days without brushing his teeth? Who does that? No wonder he has halitosis, and is infecting your vaginal area. And, what I don’t understand is that you ended up with three BV infections due to your boyfriend’s bad breath, and personal hygiene regimen, and you didn’t say anything to him about it? HUH!!!!????!!!! This man is infecting your body, causing damage to your vaginal area, and the only thing you do is try an experiment by hiding his toothbrush? What the hell? But, hold up! You break up and are now back in a relationship with him, and you still haven’t addressed his hygiene? I swear d**k is a dangerous drug. Women will put their bodies, and lives at risk for some piece of a man. You will jeopardize your health, well-being, and doing more damage to your vaginal area all because you want a man. SMDH! You have to be honest and tell this man the truth. Stop putting yourself at risk. It’s not worth it. What happens when you keep getting BV infections, and it does some serious damage to your vaginal area, and it prevents you from having children? Then what? What happens when it becomes incurable? Either you respect yourself, your body, and your well-being, or you continue to put yourself at risk. Is he worth it? Hell naw! It’s obvious he is not going to change. He feels being nasty, trifling, dirty, and not washing as signs of being a real man. He has a warped idea and sensibility of what a real man is. Therefore, I can only imagine how he treats you, and what he thinks of women. So, today, when you call or have a SKYPE session with him, I want you to be as gentle as you can be, and you explain to him what his personal hygiene has done to you. Share with him what your doctor has told you about his hygiene, and in order to move forward there will need to be some drastic changes in his personal hygiene. Share articles with him from Men’s Health, or other men’s magazines that have articles on how men can take care of themselves healthily and still be a “man.” Let him know it’s okay to be clean, and to practice a daily hygienic routine that not only helps him, but also will help your relationship. Share with him how it makes you feel to have a man who looks sharp, clean, and put together. A man with fresh breath, and a clean after shower smell. I’m sure he wouldn’t want a woman who didn’t take care of herself, or wasn’t about keeping herself clean. If he doesn’t make the changes, and he is combative, or argumentative about his cleanliness, and hygiene, then perhaps you will need to reconsider your relationship. If he is not willing to take care of himself, and take care of his own personal hygiene, then, he doesn’t think much of you. A man who won’t take care of himself will not be able to take care of you. – Terrance Dean Hey Bossip Fam, what do you think? Share your opinions and thoughts below! Nurse Calls Nine-Month-Old Baby "Loser" For Not Receiving Vaccinations

A South Carolina mom is livid after a nurse implied that her nine-month-old son is a “loser” because the baby hadn’t received any vaccinations. Katie Smart claims she received an offensive note referring to the sick child as such after taking the boy to the hospital for twisting his ankle. He also had a fever, so to be safe, she wanted the little boy checked out. That visit came with a message, Smart says, that she didn’t deserve. Nurse Calls Mom “Loser” For Not Vaccinating Baby “I did feel judged,” said Smart of the note, which called out the fact that he hadn’t received vaccinations and concluded with the word “loser” and a sad face. “For her to say that, she doesn’t know why I choose not to vac,” said Smart. Smart says she researched the ingredients of vaccinations given to children, and that’s why she and her husband decided not to inject two of theirs. She says she doesn’t know if the nurse intentionally left the note behind, or it was an accident, but either way, Smart says it was uncalled for . The family filed a complaint with the hospital, one that reached COO James Latham, who said it does not reflect the medical organization’s values. “We are not judgmental of others, and this clearly violates that standard of palmetto health,” said Latham, who offered an apology to the family. “I am genuinely sorry for this behavior, I truly am,” said Latham. The Smarts say they just want to make sure other families who make the same choice to not vaccinate their children are not subjected to that treatment. “I’m worried that this might not be a one incident kind of thing, and that is the only children’s hospital in the area that we can go to,” said Smart. The COO is not saying what, if any, additional disciplinary action they will take against this employee, only saying right now this person is suspended. He also says they hope to use this incident, however regrettable, “as an educational tool” regarding how patients should be treated at the facility. What do you think about vaccinating kids? Oreos as Addictive as Cocaine, Study Finds

We all know Oreos are addictive, but a new study suggests that the cookies are as addicting as actual drugs … at least in the way the brain responds to them. The “pleasure center” of the brain, the nucleus accumbens, apparently gets just as activated in response to Oreos as it does to cocaine and morphine. Oreos: Addictive! That could certainly have some pretty major public health implications if Oreos were as damaging to one’s system as the aforementioned narcotics. They’re not, of course, and the study was only done in rats. However, the Connecticut College authors say it’s likely relevant to humans as well. It could explain, they say why people have such a hard time resisting eating an entire sleeve of the cookies after they’ve set out just to eat one. The study, to be presented at the Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference, also claims that rats, like humans, like to eat Oreo’s creamy center first. To test how the animals responded to Oreos vs. drugs, the team trained mice to navigate a maze. On one side, Oreos were provided. On the other? Rice cakes. As you’d guess, the rats were more likely to spend time on the Oreo side. Rats treated with morphine or cocaine rather than Oreos reacted similarly. They found that regardless of what “substance” the rats were offered (Oreos, coke, or morphine) they spent about the same time on the “drug” side. “Our research supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do,” professor Joseph Schroeder said. “It may explain why some people can’t resist these foods,” he added, echoing a common refrain, “despite the fact that they know they are bad for them.” The research may thus bear some relevance to public health issues, namely the fact that high-calorie foods are often low-priced and highly addictive. And the fallout from poor eating behaviors can be as dramatic as that from drugs, said the authors, even if the risk of death from one usage is lower.

Thuggin’ On Twitter: K.Michelle Defends Calling Disrespectful Drunk Fan A “Monkey” And Denying Her Photo Request

Let me explain… K.Michelle Defends Blasting Disrespectful Fan We recently reported that over the weekend we received an email from a young woman who had an awful experience meeting singer/reality star K.Michelle in person: K Michelle from VH1′s Love & Hip Hop was seen last night at Ricardo’s Restaurant in Harlem and was asked to take a picture with a fan (a young friend of mine). K Michelle rudely replied no, and left the restaurant with co-star Yandy Smith, and friends. After leaving, K posted a picture of herself with friends, i wrote under her picture saying “It must be nice to not take pictures with your fans tonight etc. Thank You For letting a few happy people down tonight….”(visible in her feed) K Michelle replied and insulted me by writing terrible insults/a racial slur like “Shut Up Monkey Looking Girl…… My job is not to take pictures etc… Get a life and find yourself a new weave supplier etc. ” Her fans proceeded to tag along and cheer her on for bullying and insulting me, a simple fan who admires her but was disappointed in her behavior. I really admired K Michelle and saw her as a beautiful who women hated on for no reason, I admired her music, and still love her voice. It’s unfortunate that an upcoming celebrity would publicly insult and humiliate a fan. After the comment was made her fans continued to harass me and insult me as well. She expresses being a role model etc. but she displayed so many acts of disrespect and insults on her social media. Why come to New York if your going to insult the people there? Round of Applause to her. Do you think after all African Americans Have Been Through an African American Reality TV Star should be able to refer to a young African American Fan as a monkey? It’s bullying like that, that sets young people into depression and poor confidence. She claims to be a role model but she will discourage a female fan at the drop of a dime. K Michelle is a Monster. K.Michelle took to her Twitter account to blast the thirsty fan for allegedly lying about the encounter and sets the record straight: Hit the flip for the rest of Michelle’s side of the story. They say it’s always 3 sides to a story; yours, theirs and the truth! Continue reading

You Can’t Be Serious: Arkansas Rib Shack Posts Racially Insensitive Sign About Obamacare And Slavery Outside Restaurant

Healthcare isn’t exactly 40 acres and mule… Via 4029TV A sign with a political message at a restaurant in Rogers had some community members up in arms. The sign at Smokin’ Joe’s Ribhouse has been changed. It says “Why cook? Get some carry out.” But that was not the message on the sign Friday night. A viewer supplied 40/29 News with a photo of the sign before it was changed. It said “Obamacare America’s Punishment for Slavery Years.” “I apologize for the sign. It’s offending people, as it did. I didn’t intend for it to be racist-oriented at all,” said restaurant owner Johnny Howard. Howard said the sign was up for 45 minutes before he took it down after getting several complaints from the public. He said the sign was taken out of context and that his frustration is with the Affordable Care Act, not with President Barack Obama. “It’s the policy and I made the mistake of wording it in the wrong fashion. The policy. It’s not the person it’s the policy,” Howard said. “To me this health care plan is a job killer. I myself will have to eliminate at least one location if all the policies that were written originally go through,” he said. Will he put up another controversial sign sometime? “Well, no. I think I’ve learned my lesson.” This guy needs a LOT more people to convince us that “it’s the policy”. In Arkansas??? $heeeeeeeeeit… Image via ABC Continue reading

11-Year-Old Girl Sent Home From School With Letter Informing Parents She’s Fat

An 11-year-old Florida girl was sent home from school with a letter informing her parents that she’s overweight, a controversial practice by any measure. But wait until you hear what she actually weighs … School Letter Says 11-Year-Old is Fat The girl is 5’5″ and tips the scales at 124 pounds. While that sounds like the definition of normal, the county health department came to Lily Grasso’s middle school in Naples, Fla., to screen the kids. Since Lily’s BMI registered at 22, she was put into the “overweight” category and a (pejoratively nicknamed) ” fat letter ” was sent out, enraging her mom. While the letter’s intent is clearly coming from the right, anti-obesity place, one wonders if this is only compounding kids’ self-esteem and body issues. In this case, with a girl like Lily who isn’t anyone’s definition of overweight, will she develop a complex over being told she’s fat in such an official way? As her mom, Kristen, asked, should a test like this be done by a doctor, rather than a school? Should a school go further than promoting diet and exercise? Parents were given the option to opt out, but it appears they had little idea what was to be expected from the screening. Tell us what you think below: School letters to parents about kids’ weight: Right or wrong?   Right! If it helps anyone get healthier it’s worth it! Wrong! It’s not the schools’ place to do this! Blizzident Toothbrush: Too Good to Be True?!?

Tired of taking anywhere nearly a minute-and-a-half to clean your teeth every morning and night? Let’s face it: We all are. Fortunately, the Blizzident toothbrush now exists. Costing a mere $299, this invention looks a lot like a mouth guard with bristles… but it lasts for a year and it can allegedly get the cleaning job done in six seconds. Yes, six seconds! Blizzident Toothbrush: AMAZING! Spokesman Chris Martin claims the Blizzident makes bruising your teeth “as easy as biting into an apple.” “The intent was to create a tool that simply cleans perfectly everywhere,” says Martin. “The six-second brushing time was just a side effect of the invention, but that was not even intended.” Does the device truly work, though? Dr. Mark S. Wolff, who works at the New York University College of Dentistry, questions the invention’s efficiency, telling ABC News: “There’s some things that don’t make sense about this,” while acknowledging that that the Blizzident is a “novel idea” and could maybe, possibly work. But the fluoride in one’s toothpaste needs at least a minute to work effectively. “I guess [it’s] for the man who has everything,” Wolff concludes. You heard him, Jay-Z ! Go buy a Blizzident and tell us if it works.

Army Wives Canceled, Lifetime Announces Two-Hour Retrospective for 2014

Lifetime has pulled the plug on its longest-running series. The network announced today that Army Wives will not return with new episodes, canceling the drama after seven very successful seasons. A 120-minute retrospective will air some time in 2014. Said Rob Sharenow, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Lifetime, via statement: “There is no denying how special Army Wives has been to both Lifetime and the television landscape.  By taking on a very relevant and timely issue, it has brilliantly captured the challenges our military families endure and the bravery they and their loved ones display while serving our country. “It has been an honor to be the home of Army Wives.  We also want to thank Army Wives’ passionate legion of fans and everyone involved with the series: ABC Studios, Mark Gordon and Jeff Melvoin, Tanya Biank, every single cast member, as well as the crew and community of Charleston, South Carolina.  Without their dedication, effort and loyalty, Army Wives’ seven wonderful seasons would not have been possible; and for that we are very grateful.” The series received many accolades, during its run, including a pair of Gracie Awards from the Alliance for Women in Media, a Sentinel for Health Award from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism’s Norman Lear Center, as well as an NAACP Image Award, NAMIC Award and Prism Award nominations.
