The Situation Wonders In Rehab: ‘How Did I Get Here?’

‘At first, I thought that it might have gave me energy. I thought it helped me,’ the ‘Jersey Shore’ star says of prescription painkillers. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The Situation Photo: MTV News When he first began taking prescription painkillers , “Jersey Shore” star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino said the medication helped him deal with the crazy rush of fame he experienced as the show’s stars turned from regular kids to international superstars. But as he told MTV News’ Sway Calloway in an exclusive interview , the crutch quickly turned into a dependence that proved hard to shake. “At first, I thought that it might have gave me energy,” Situation said. “I thought it helped me. Because it’s a painkiller, you’re not tired anymore. Then after a while, you’re like, ‘Oh, wow, maybe this is gonna help my schedule out.’ I’m always on planes, I’m always flying, I’m flying there. I don’t want anybody to feel bad for me at all. I’m just saying that being in this business is not easy, and it’s definitely not for everybody. Sorrentino said he now realizes he made a mistake in choosing pills over the thing that used to keep him pumped up: exercise. And he vehemently denied rumors that there were other substances — such as cocaine, alcohol or marijuana — that fed his addiction. “Strictly painkillers,” he said. “And never even mixed them. … Even on ‘Jersey Shore,’ which obviously people have seen me with a drink in my hand. But I was never drunk. I was the guy that was the ladies’ man. You can’t get girls if you can’t speak to them. Drinking was definitely not an issue for me, for sure.” He described his first day in rehab and the difficulty of dealing with his new reality. “Your first day is detox,” he said of the program he attended. “It’s not a pleasurable experience at all. … In the beginning, for sure, when I was [at the facility] in Utah, I’d wake up and just be extremely disappointed with myself. Like, ‘I can’t believe I got here. How did I get here? Like, I can’t believe this.’ ” Though he didn’t do serious damage to his career, his pocketbook or his family, Sorrentino now realizes that all those things could have happened. “You hear stories all the time of celebrities and people just not even waking up … that could be me, you know?” His biggest fear, though, was that rehab might not stick and he would find himself right back in the same scenario. “That’s exactly what I was thinking,” he said. “The results, your health, your mind, your body, it’s not coming back as quick as you want it to. I’ll be honest, the only thing that comes back quick is your emotions.” After years of blocking out feelings of fear, pain and anxiety, once he began detoxing, Sorrentino all of a sudden began feeling anger, sadness, disappointment, pressure and dismay. “Everything just hits you all at once, and it feels like you’re not going to recover,” he said. “It feels like it’s an impossible deed. Day by day, you’re like, ‘When is it going to get better? When is it going to get better?’ But day by day, it does.” Instead of rolling the ball uphill these days, Mike said it finally feels hopeful that he can make it through this challenge. One of the first things he did after leaving rehab was change his cell number and eliminate the people and places in his life that were familiar in a negative way. “If I don’t do business with you or work with you, I probably don’t talk to you,” he said. When Sway asked if Mike is worried about relapsing, Sorrentino laughed nervously and said, “You’re not supposed to think like that. You’re supposed to take it one day at a time. If all you have to concentrate on is that one day and today and being your best … I think you should be good for that day and you’re not gonna relapse.” Related Videos Exclusive: Mike ‘The Situation’ Speaks

Phillip Phillips Still ‘Numb’ From ‘American Idol’ Win

‘ I don’t really feel anything … It’s just so unreal,” 21-year-old Phillips says after the season 11 finale on Wednesday. By Kelly Marino Phillip Phillips wins “American Idol” Photo: Fox/ Getty Images After a “world record” of 132 million votes, America has crowned guitar-strumming sweetheart Phillip Phillips as season 11’s “American Idol.” And although most viewers and critics expected him to win it all, Phillips himself seemed shocked that America chose him. When MTV News caught up with the 21-year-old Georgia native at a backstage press conference after the finale, he still seemed to be coming to terms with his recent win over 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez. Q: How do you feel? A: Uh, I’m feeling. I don’t know. I don’t really feel anything. It’s crazy. I’m still a little numb from the whole situation. It’s just so unreal. Q: Did you think you were going to win? A: Did I think I was going to win? No. Heck no. Did you see Jessica’s last performance? Golly. She sang the crap out of that song. Q: Is this surreal? Is this like a dream come true? A: Man, it’s so unreal. Like I said, it hasn’t sunk in yet and it’s just such a blessing to have and I’m kind of ready to try to comprehend it all. Q: Can you talk about your health? Will you get any surgery? A: Yeah, I’m gonna get some surgery done so I’m gonna get all better for the tour. Q: How were you able to overcome the pain you must have been in to get through this season and get all the way to the end? A: Yeah, it was very tough but I had great doctors and great people surrounding me so that really helped out. So, it’s just a blessing to be here now. Q: Can you talk about what happened onstage when you were performing “Home” tonight? A: Yeah, I wasn’t thinking about anything, not even the song. I wasn’t really wanting to sing or anything. And I just started thinking about the whole journey, how far all of us had come and how far we had made it and it was just so overwhelming. Q: When you auditioned did you think you would be standing where you are right now? A: Honestly man, I didn’t think I’d even make it to see the judges because, like I said, man, I have no shame in saying that I’m not a great singer. You know, I just love having fun up onstage jamming with the guys and just playing good music man. You know, I like getting the crowd into it. Music’s fun dude. It’s takes away a lot of things that’s going around. Q: Are you all cried out or do you think you might cry a little more? A: I might end up crying some more. I hate crying but I’ll probably cry some more. It feels good at times. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Phillip Phillips ‘Excited’ For ‘American Idol’ Finale

Oddsmakers think Jessica Sanchez’s chances of winning are slim. By Gil Kaufman Phillip Phillips on “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker/ FOX From his no-nonsense stage attire to his humble attitude and meat-and-potatoes taste in music, “American Idol” finalist Phillip Phillips
isn’t that different from many of you. And, like you, the guy doesn’t always feel like showing up to work when he’s feeling sick. But when attendance means a shot at a major-label recording contract and potential stardom, you suck it up and punch the clock even when you aren’t feeling it. With just one more performance before Wednesday night’s coronation show, Phillips, 21, who has struggled with a painful case of kidney stones the entire season, is happy that the end is near. “Yeah, I’ve been sick the whole show,” said Phillips in a press conference on Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Seated next to his rival, 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez, Phillips admitted that the painful condition has affected his singing on the show at times. “I’m doing all right. It’s almost over, so I’m excited.” As viewers may have noticed, Phillips has been absent from the weekly Ford video segments. A source close to the show telling the magazine that the singer has been experiencing pain that is “so severe” that he’s been given special permission to sit out the physically exhausting shoots. TMZ reported last week that Phillips’ doctors ordered him to undergo “immediate surgery” or face further complications. The singer said he wanted to put off the procedure to make it through the show’s finale, despite the fact that the medication he’s taking causes dry mouth, which has had some impact on his singing. Citing several sources, the site reported that when Phillips returned to Georgia for his “Idol” home visit, his doctor was alarmed at the pawn shop worker’s condition. Recovery from the kidney surgery would take at least six weeks. Phillips has taken a firm stand on the surgery, but he appears to be loosening up a bit when it comes to his equally adamant rejection of “Idol”‘s attempts to get him to jazz up his bland jeans and t-shirt wardrobe. He told the Reporter that he might switch things up a bit for Tuesday (May 22) night’s show. “You might be intrigued,” he said. “I might be looking a little sexy.” Phillips has been struggling
, but rival Sanchez has also been making some serious sacrifices. “Right now people my age are going to prom and getting ready for homecoming,” she said. “I’m here performing in front of celebrities, singing with celebrities … singing in front of millions of people.” The Chula Vista, California native, who has a chance to be the youngest “Idol” champ and the first female to win
in five season, is happy to miss prom to get a chance to sing with original “Dreamgirls” star Jennifer Holliday on Wednesday night’s two-hour finale. But Sanchez might want also want to dodge the many online oddsmaker’s sites if she wants to keep her hopes up for Tuesday’s last singing round. Deadline Hollywood reported that betting sites are tipping heavily in favor of Phillips, with Ireland’s Intrade giving him a 78 percent chance of winning, while an “Idol”-focused wagering site puts him as the favorite with 4 to 13 odds over Jessica’s 5 to 2 odds. That means that you will get a $4 profit for every $13 you bet on Phillips, while Jessica will earn a $5 profit for every $2 bet. The Situation Opens Up About Rehab, Snooki And Sobriety

‘I’m not gonna lie, it feels like you’re not gonna recover,’ the ‘Jersey Shore’ star tells MTV News in an exclusive post-rehab interview. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino Photo: MTV News The mantra you often hear from people in recovery is “one day at a time.” And two months after entering a facility to deal with a prescription-medication addiction, “Jersey Shore” star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino knows exactly what that means. “Ever since I’ve been out, I’m not gonna lie … it’s not easy,” Sorrentino told MTV News’ Sway in an exclusive interview in which the “Shore” star talks about his struggle to get sober and his attempts to make amends with his “Shore” roomies, especially soon-to-be-mom Snooki . “But at the same time, where I’m at right now, I’m at a good place. But it took a little bit to get there. In the beginning? A lot of rainy days, so to speak. A lot of rainy days.” In the candid interview, Sorrentino opened up about how he got hooked on prescription pills while denying rumors that any illicit substances were involved. With a renewed, more focused sparkle in his eye, the drama king “Shore” viewers loved to hate in recent seasons said he could barely recognize the man he’d become under the grip of addiction as he recounted the struggle of his first days in rehab. “Your first day is detox,” he said of the program he attended. “It’s not a pleasurable experience at all. … In the beginning, for sure, when I was [at the facility] in Utah, I’d wake up and just be extremely disappointed with myself. Like, ‘I can’t believe I got here. How did I get here?’ ” Mike said he worried about how his addiction would impact his family, his health and his mind, and at one point, he wondered if he’d end up another tragic Hollywood headline if he pushed things too far. The hardest part for him, he said, was the headlong rush of emotions he felt once he began to come out of his drug fog, a torrent of feelings he’d been blocking that nearly overwhelmed him. “I’m not gonna lie, it feels like you’re not gonna recover,” he said about that emotional roller coaster. “It feels like an impossible deed … [but] day-by-day it gets better.” Now that the “old Mike” is back, Sorrentino said he’s gotten supportive emails from much of this “Shore” TV family over the past two months, but the one relationship he still needs to repair is his once-close bond with Nicole ” Snooki ” Polizzi. “She had my back and I had her back too,” he said of the formerly tight duo. “We were close for a long time. … I am going to say that I am upset that we’re not as close as we are today. I care about the girl, for sure.” Mike said Snooki did tell him she was worried about him and asked if he was OK during the throes of his addiction, questions he brushed off at the time. When asked by Sway if there was anything he’d done that he’d want to apologize to Snooki for, Sorrentino was quick to answer. “Hurting her feelings,” he said. “I would never want to hurt that girl’s feelings. That girl is very special to me. If I could turn back the clock, which I always say that I have no regrets … definitely hurting her feelings … and our friendship.” Related Videos Exclusive: Mike ‘The Situation’ Speaks

‘Dark Shadows’ Sneak Peek Reveals Johnny Depp’s De-Fanging Plan

New featurette is dedicated to late star of original soap, Jonathan Frid. By John Mitchell Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros With just two weeks left until the big release of “Dark Shadows,” Warner Bros. is stoking the coals of excitement with a new featurette that brings not only behind-the-scenes interviews and footage, but offers up an important new plot detail from the film. “The legend of the vampire has been told for centuries, capturing the dark shadows of our imagination and inspiring filmmakers and actors to breathe new life into the undead,” a voice-over reminds us at the top of the clip. “But there’s never been a vampire like Barnabas Collins.” Depp said the idea to do the film came naturally to him and Burton, who have worked together on eight films. “I’d always been sort of attracted to horror films and things like that, even as a very young kid,” Depp explains. “I said, ‘Tim, we should do a vampire movie together.’ ” And when Johnny Depp and Tim Burton decide to do something, it has a way of getting done. A large part of the featurette focuses on the history of vampires in movies and reminds us that one of cinema’s great vampires, Christopher Lee, is featured in “Shadows.” “One of my favorite moments I’ve ever been able to experience in a film was I got to hypnotize Dracula; I got to hypnotize Christopher Lee,” Depp says. “He was, you know, the great Dracula.” To get into character as Barnabas Collins, Depp didn’t stray far from the source material. “For Barnabas, everywhere I searched character-wise, I kept coming back to Jonathan Frid,” the actor explains. “He really did something beautiful with that character on the ‘Dark Shadows’ series back in the ’60s and early ’70s.” Frid, who cameos in the film and is shown arriving at a party at Collinwood in the featurette, died earlier this month in his native Canada. The clip closes with an “In Memoriam” dedication to the classically trained actor, who maintained a close relationship with the show’s fans by appearing at “Shadows” conventions and readings as recently as 2011, before his health began to decline. The clip features some great new scenes from the film, including a fun bit where Depp’s Barnabas seeks advice from Chloe Moretz’s Carolyn Stoddard on “the art of courting a woman of this time,” but importantly introduces a major plot twist that we wondered (all the way back in October!) whether Burton would include in his film: Barnabas’ attempt to de-fang himself with the help of Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) and become mortal again to pursue a romantic relationship with Bella Heathcote’s Victoria Winters. “If a man can become a monster, then a monster can become a man,” Barnabas says in a voice-over while Dr. Hoffman surveys large blood-filled beakers and Depp sits with IV lines running from him. It’s a story line carried over directly from both the original soap and its short-lived ’90s remake. (Indeed, this particular story line was the focus of NBC’s revival starring Ben Cross and Joanna Going.) “By tapping into vampires, witches, ghosts, the reason they’re powerful is because we all kind of experience those feelings on some level,” Burton says of the film. “It’s something that remains in our popular culture because it’s strangely part of our everyday lives.” Just two weeks to go, “Dark Shadows” fans! For Your Information: Two-Thirds Of Pregnancies Were Unplanned For Unmarried Women In Their Twenties

Knocked Up ? Study Shows Two-Thirds Of Pregnancies Were Unplanned For Unmarried Women In Their Twenties This shouldn’t come as a big surprise to anyone. More than two-thirds of pregnancies in unmarried 20-something women between 2001 and 2008 were unplanned, a new study finds. In 2008 alone, nearly 10 percent of unmarried women ages 20 to 29 experienced an unintended pregnancy. About half of unintended pregnancies in this age group end in abortion, according to the study released Tuesday (April 24) by the non-profit Guttmacher Institute. The study pulled data on unplanned pregnancy, abortion and miscarriage rates from a multitude of national sources, including the National Center for Health Statistics, the National Survey of Family Growth and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The results revealed that there were 3.4 million pregnancies in women in their 20s between 2001 and 2008. Of these, more than half, or 1.95 million were in unmarried women. Of those 1.95 million pregnancies, 69 percent were unintentional. The rate was highest in women ages 20 to 24, with 73 percent of pregnancies in this age group unplanned. In women 25 to 29, 63 percent were unplanned. As of 2008, the researchers report online, 54 percent of births to unmarried women in their 20s were the result of an unintended pregnancy. In comparison, only 31 percent of births among married women were a result of unintended pregnancy. Among all women, about half of pregnancies are unplanned. Unplanned pregnancies included pregnancies that were completely unintended as well as pregnancies that occurred two or more years prior to when the women in question would have wanted one. Women with lower levels of education, women in poverty and black and non-white Hispanic women are at the highest risk for an unmarried, unintended pregnancy, the report found. Black and Hispanic women had twice the rate of unplanned pregnancies as their white counterparts, though black women were the only group over the 2001-2008 time period to see a decline in their rate of unplanned pregnancies. Women in poverty were three to four times more likely than the highest-income women to experience unplanned pregnancy, and women who had only a high-school diploma were twice as likely as women with some college to get pregnant unintentionally. At least unplanned pregnancies were on the decline for black women! This study is begging for a Plan B ad right next to it… Source More On Bossip!
