Weekday Vegetarian: Healthy and Delicious Lentil Patties

Photo: Kelly Rossiter My husband and I were out of town the past weekend. He spent his days at a conference working, and I was lying around a beautiful house on Lake Erie with old friends, essentially spending the weekend overindulging. We were in a big farming community, but he got an unappetizing dinner served cafeteria style, despite the claims that dinner would be “local Ontario cuisine”, while we dined on a fantastic local flank steak,

World Cup’s African Vibe Hits the Fashion World

Image from Nearfar It’s in the air: that African vibe is hitting music, t.v. and the fashion scene. Vibrant, colourful and wild prints are de rigeur for this summer’s sun dresses; on the catwalk and in the shops. It has taken awhile, but finally African prints have gone global. They have always been very sophisticated, combining local culture with wonderful patterns and colours. But now some big-name fashion designers are taking a serious interest in working on socially responsible projects with African craftswomen…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Fiorina, Beck Attack Boxer Over National Security, Go Against The Military’s Views

photo via flickr California Senate candidate Cary Fioina is looking for an edge over her opponent, Sen. Barbara Boxer, and it looks like she may have settled on the issue of national security and climate change. Boxer, a long-time champion of clean energy and climate action, has been vocal about the link between national security and a changing climate, which could lead to conflicts over resources and border disputes. Despite studies from the military confirming the validity of Boxer’s concern, Fiorina and now Glen Beck are mock… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Has This Man Gone 70 Years Without Eating? Scientists Say Maybe So

Okay, here’s a weird one. You may remember the story of Prahlad Jani , an Indian yogi who claims that he hasn’t ever eaten or had a drink in the last 70 years. Well, scientists have just reportedly concluded a 15-day study in which they observed the man around the clock. And they’re entirely baffled — he didn’t eat, didn’t drink, didn’t urinate, and didn’t pass stool. What’s more, the researchers evidently conducted a number of tests, and found him to be “healthier than an average 40 year old.” The scientists are now hoping the man may help… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Where Oil Goes in the US (Images)

Photo via Green Prophet Not all of the oil burned in the United States is used to power cars and trucks. The majority of it is, but not all — there are myriad other uses as well, many of which fly under the radar. This may seem like obvious stuff, but it’s worth reiterating — especially considering that some of our nation’s most senior legislators aren’t aware of where our oil goes. So, here’s a quick look at how our nation uses its oil: … Read the full story on TreeHugger

How Wild is North America? Infographic Lays It Out (Video)

A portion of the infographic built by The Big Wild Just how much wilderness is left on the North American continent? It doesn’t seem like much as you drive across the US and see almost all urban or suburban developments, or farmland, mining or other ways people have snapped up all the free space. Where has it all gone and is there any left? According to The Big Wild, a conservation movement that connects people with activist opportunities for the preservation of wilderness, “Nearly one quarter of the planet’s wild forests are inside our borders; 20% of the world’s fresh wat… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Protesters Who Occupied Runway Prepare to Stand Trial

Image credit: Plane Stupid When anti-aviation activists stormed Aberdeen airport for a game of putt-putt (mini-golf in the UK), one commenter pointed out that they would have been shot on sight in the US. The same group had previously occupied the roof of the Houses of Parliament —again proving that the UK police are less trigger happy than officers in some parts of the world. But the ai… Read the full story on TreeHugger
