Heavy D: The Essential Playlist

MTV News compiles the most memorable hits of his extensive catalog. By Rob Markman Heavy D Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images There will never be another Heavy D . When the Mount Vernon, New York, MC debuted in 1987 as part of the group Heavy D & the Boyz , he made an immediate impact with his infectious dance hits. For the most part, Heav directed his material toward the ladies and even dubbed himself the Overweight Lover. With his music, Waterbed Heav oozed sex appeal, paving the way for other big-boned MCs like the Notorious B.I.G., Fat Joe and Rick Ross to garner a female fanbase. Heavy was also a noted dancer and paired each of his hits with well-choreographed steps. It’s difficult to imagine where the likes of Soulja Boy and Cali Swag District would be without Heavy D’s contributions. On November 8, Heavy D left us , but his music will live on forever. For the unfamiliar, MTV News has put together an essential playlist, while at the same time giving the MC’s longtime fans something to remember him by. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been rocking with Heavy D since his 1987 debut or with his more recent foray into reggae and dancehall: Let’s all collectively gather around the iPod and wish Dwight “Heavy D” Myers a Peace Journey ! “The Overweight Lover’s in the House” The big man sure knew how to make an entrance. Along with his group the Boyz, Heavy D made his presence known with “The Overweight Lover’s in the House” from the group’s debut album, Living Large. “See the weight that I am, is a big lover man/ Check out the rhyme, in due time you’ll be a Heav D fan,” he rapped — and boy was he right. “Mr. Big Stuff” Back when many still considered hip-hop to be mere noise, Heavy D made older skeptics take notice when he sampled Jean Knight’s 1971 hit Stax single “Mr. Big Stuff.” Keeping much of the song’s original melody, Heav rhymed over a bombastic drum track and put his big-man pride on full display. “Somebody for Me” In 1989, Heavy D & the Boyz scored their first platinum plaque with their sophomore album, Big Tyme. The album had a number of hits, like “We Got Our Own Thang” and “Gyrlz, They Love Me,” but none bigger than the New Jack Swing-inspired “Somebody for Me.” In the track’s video, Heav also cleaned up his act and ditched the track jacket and sneakers for a well-tailored suit and hard-bottom shoes. Good choice! “Now That We Found Love” Heavy had a gang of hits, but 1991’s “Now That We Found Love” is among his biggest. With ’90s R&B singer Aaron Hall on the hook and Teddy Riley on the beat, Heavy D & the Boyz kept clubs pumping with their popular dance hit. Through his music, Heav also kept things positive. Judging from this infectious groove, it was nearly impossible to tell that the rapper was mourning the death of group member Trouble T Roy, who had tragically passed a year before the song’s release. “Don’t Curse” (featuring Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Kool G Rap, Q-Tip and CL Smooth) Because most of his catalog revolved around lovey-dovey dance hits, some hardcore rap purists refused to give Heavy his props, but when Mr. Big Stuff gathered noted MCs Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Kool G Rap, Q-Tip and CL Smooth for 1991’s “Don’t Curse,” even the haters had to give it up. Soul for Real’s “Candy Rain” remix This R&B quartet didn’t have many hits, but their 1995 single “Candy Rain” was all the band needed to cement their place in popular music. And who did they call for the song’s remix? Heavy Diddly, Diddly, Diddly D, of course. “Nuttin’ But Love” Heavy D & the Boyz snatched up a third platinum plaque with their 1994 album, Nuttin’ But Love. The LP’s title track, produced by DJ Kid Capri, was a crowd favorite. On the song, Heav professed his affection for his doubting lover. Want a real 1990s flashback? Check the video for a cameo from Rebecca Gayheart, a.k.a. “the Noxzema girl.” Michael Jackson’s “Jam” It’s one thing to do records with rappers like Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap, but when the King of Pop comes calling, that’s a whole different level. When Michael Jackson needed a spitter to compliment his Teddy Riley-produced smash “Jam,” he tapped Heavy D. “Making funky jams with my man, Michael Jackson,” the Overweight Lover rapped over the bouncy track. His man Michael Jackson — just let that soak in for a second. Janet Jackson’s “Alright” remix There was no one more innovative than the King of Pop, but MJ wasn’t the first Jackson to feature Heav. Before 1992’s “Jam,” sister Janet snagged the rapper for her 1991 remix of “Alright” from her Rhythm Nation album. Not only did he get to lay vocals alongside Janet, in the song’s video, he co-starred with the legendary Cab Calloway. Grand Puba’s “Let’s Get It On” (featuring Heavy D, 2Pac and the Notorious B.I.G.) This 1994 underground track usually goes unnoticed, but it’s an important footnote in rap history. Before their famous feud and untimely deaths, the Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac collaborated with Grand Puba and Heavy D on this Eddie F-produced track. It is the only known in-studio collaboration between the legendary rappers, and Heavy D was there for it all, trading bars with Big and ‘Pac. “No Matter What” There is no doubt, Heavy D was a hip-hop soul through and through, but the Jamaican star returned to his roots when he reinvented himself as a reggae artist on the 2008 album Vibes. The music may have changed, but Heav still crooned about love and overall good vibes. Share your memories of Heavy D on Facebook. Tyler Perry Fans Enraged Over Kim Kardashian Casting In “The Marriage Counselor”

View original post here:

It seems the chickens have come home to roost. Tyler Perry fans are none too happy over his choice of casting soon-to-be-divorced reality “star” Kim Kardashian in his latest project, The Marriage Counselor . Two weeks ago Perry announced Kardashian had been chosen to play Ava, a co-worker of Judith (Jurnee Smollett), an Ivy League educated therapist who decides to step outside of her marriage to spice up her life. Fans of the prolific director immediately took to the message boards, denouncing Perry’s choice of someone they feel to be morally questionable. In light of Kardashian recently announcing her divorce from Kris Humphries after only 72 days of marriage, Perry’s fans are even more enraged. Below are some comments from TylerPerry.com : “Mr. Perry I’ve loved your work, BUT I won’t be buying a ticket or DVD of any work featuring a reality TV personality, no matter whom. Heretofore your work has been focused and professional. As a theater professional I believe your work on stage and in film has benefited the arts community. I can think of no greater insult to arts professionals than to use a person who has no training or experience; any project including these individuals is simply cashing in on a notoriety built on disgusting displays of narcissistic self-indulgence. Please do not validate this debasement of entertainment media by employing this artless cretin” “I can tell by his comment to his fans about this woman being in this film that he is just like any other typical person when they get a lil money they start to get greedy. he does not care about his fans but about his money so if he is willing to let this one person ruin his while film then so be it. how can u let someone whose whole background is negative and gets a divorce 72 days after you get married. how is that supposed to be something positive and uplifting to your audience. that is jusy selffish to me and i believe he knows that. smh i would have picked beyonce. she is a positive role model right now” “So disappointed in you and your decision to keep Kim K. in your movie. I guess it is all about making it big at the box office, but money and popularity shouldn’t be an objective means to anything. I will not support this movie and I will tell everyone who I know not to support it as well. Sorry, but if you are going to forget the people who help you get to where you are and make such a horrendous mistake as this then you don’t deserve my time nor money. Truly not a fan anymore because what you beginning to stand for is not right.” What say you readers? Are these disgruntled fans correct in their assessment that Tyler Perry is going over to the “dark side” by casting a reality star? Or is Perry’s casting choice a clever marketing ploy to garner media attention? Share your opinions in comments section below. Will L.A. Reid Get OutKast To Finally Drop An Album Together?

Original post:

OutKast fans have not had an album from the group since 2006’s Idlewild soundtrack. With Andre 3000 shifting his attention to acting, listeners have had to settle for the occasional guest verse from 3-Stacks. His partner Big Boi has been enjoying a great solo career, but there is nothing quite like having the two of them together. Rumors of a possible reunion have been recurring like a bad rash over the years, but nothing has materialized. However, Organized Noize’s Rico Wade has reason to believe that a reunion between the player and the poet could be closer to reality than we think. In speaking to TheUrbandaily about his new collaborative album with Nappy Roots, Nappy.org , Wade revealed than the pieces may finally be in place for a new OutKast album. “Keeping it really real, L.A. Reid–and I’m not sure if he’s all the way in– he’s going to be at Epic . Epic has Jive and Jive has OutKast,” says Wade. “It is very real sh*t. But it’s about Andre 3000, is he gonna do it. [Well] Andre’s been calling me lately. He’s ready to go in. Us working with Nappy Roots has kept the creativity going [for me]. And Big Boi’s a worker.” Wade and his Organized Noize production team are responsible for some of the best songs that OutKast has ever recorded, including their entire debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik , released on Reid’s LaFace Records. With the Goodie Mob also reuniting, the timing couldn’t be better for the Dungeon Family to serve up some more soul food. “We were just together on the 4th of July talking about it but I ain’t sent no beats to them or nothing,” says Wade. “We need the five of us to get together and vibe. I’m supposed to meet with L.A Reid this week. If Antonio is involved he’s a great motivator.” L.A. Reid Goes To Epic Label Group! L.A. 3 Tips To Get Your Infant To Sleep

Continue reading here:

Over the years of putting our own children to sleep and keeping them asleep, and counseling thousands of other moms and dads on various styles of nighttime parenting, here are some time-tested, proven attitudes and techniques. Most of these are applicable to infants and toddlers of all ages. New App BabyOnTime Will Give You Time 1- Develop a realistic attitude about nighttime parenting. Sleeping, like eating, is not a state you can force a baby into. Best you can do is to create a secure environment that allows sleep to overtake your baby. A realistic long- term goal is to help your baby develop a healthy attitude about sleep: that sleep is a pleasant state to enter and a secure state to remain in. Many sleep problems in older children and adults stem from children growing up with an unhealthy attitude about sleep—that sleep was not a pleasant state to enter and was a fearful state to remain in. 2. Stay flexible. No single approach will work with all babies all the time or even all the time with the same baby. Don’t persist with a failing experiment. If the “sleep program” isn’t working for your family, drop it. Develop a nighttime parenting style that works for you. Babies have different nighttime temperaments and families have varied lifestyles. Keep working at a style of nighttime parenting that fits the temperament of your baby and your own lifestyle. 3 Get baby used to a variety of sleep associations. The way an infant goes to sleep at night is the way she expects to go back to sleep when she awakens. So, if your infant is always rocked or nursed to sleep, she will expect to be rocked or nursed back to sleep. When Is The Right Time To Introduce Technology To Your Kids? Tell us what works for you?
