‘Conan The Barbarian’: The Reviews Are In!

While critics prefer the remake to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original, reviews aren’t glowing. By Terri Schwartz Jason Momoa in “Conan the Barbarian” Photo: Lionsgate Entertainment “Conan the Barbarian” isn’t trying to pull any punches. From the beginning, the remake of the 1982 cult classic proclaims that its lead lives, loves, slays and is content. And critics are saying that’s exactly what you get in theaters. Reviews haven’t necessarily been positive, with critics complaining about the script and the one-dimensional characters. But they seem to agree that Jason Momoa did a better job in the title role than Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the movie is fun — at least as a mindless summer blockbuster. It might not be worth spending the extra money to see the flick in 3-D, but the fighting is good and gory if that’s what fans are looking for. But don’t let us tell you what to think. Before you head to theaters to watch “Conan the Barbarian,” find out what the critics thought of “Conan the Barbarian” in our review round-up: The Script “With a script so pat and humor-free, Momoa has little to do but sneer and slice. The film informs us that Conan has the heart of a lion and ‘the loyalty of a bloodhound,’ but we get nary a sniff of that in this carnage fest. He’s built like a tank, but Conan emotes like one, too.” — Scott Bowles, USA Today The Effects “This ‘Conan’ plods along, regularly erupting in action scenes that make scant visual sense in two dimensions and none at all in 3-D. The few that stick out involve supernatural beasties; there’s one ferocious battle against warriors made of sand that combines athletic parkour and digital effects to surprisingly exciting ends. Other than that, it’s tame stuff, and there’s little sense of the larger mythical stage the hero strides across.” — Ty Burr, The Boston Globe The Remake “The original ‘Conan’ was a sloppy, grandiose, unforgivable muckbath directed by the (I say the words lovingly) right-wing maniac John Milius. I watched it about four times to make sure it had no redeeming qualities. The reboot (re-sandal?) isn’t good either, exactly. But it has a certain commitment to its cause, and by that I mean it supplies the necessary flayings, slayings, beheadings and, um, a be-nose-ing, all of it dancing to the tune of those amusingly stilted He-Man declaratives — King James Bible cadences applied to comic-book visions. It knows it’s a B movie, and gets on with it.” — Kyle Smith, The New York Post The Schwarzenegger Connection “In this dank ultimate-fighting challenge, Jason Momoa as Conan provides the only visual vivacity; he has an eye-catchingly sensuous face atop the requisite statuesque beefcake. Much more than Schwarzenegger in his early Teutonic-slab phase, Momoa nicely fulfills the law of Hollywood Darwinism: survival of the dishiest. Such is his sex appeal that he almost brings plausibility to the movie’s silliest scene, when Conan tells Tamara, ‘I live, I love, I slay, and I am content,’ and the virgin instantly falls into his arms. Guys bringing their dates to this murky holocaust are advised not to try using Conan’s credo as a pickup line.” — Richard Corliss, Time The Final Word ” ‘Conan the Barbarian,’ starring the excellent rippling chisel of Jason Momoa, is brutal, bloody beyond belief, and has no socially redeeming value. So it is with a certain amount of guilt that I say it’s kind of a wicked blast to watch, especially if you’re in the mood for some righteous revenge.” — Betsy Sharkey, The Los Angeles Times Check out everything we’ve got on “Conan the Barbarian.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

November 16, 2010 was the best day of my life. I remember I was…

November 16, 2010 was the best day of my life. I remember I was going to the Justin Bieber concert in Boston, Massachusetts at the Boston Garden with 3 of my best friends. It was on a Tuesday, so right after school we drove down to Boston. While we were in the car we were listening to his CD the whole way down and was talking about him. Then when we got there the first thing we did was buy t-shirts and went out to eat. Then finally we stood in line for about an hour outside in the cold. It was the biggest line I’ve ever seen. All four of us were singing and yelling while everyone was looking at us . Then the doors finally opened. Our seats were apart from each other so it was two of us in one section and two of us in another. My friend and I decided to take the first row of the Lodge and seats 9 and 10. My other two friends sat down on the floor but farther back then us. When the concert started you couldn’t hear anything because all you could hear was everyone screaming at the top of there lungs but I was doing the same. Sean Kingston came on first then Justin came on and the place got ever louder. I was yelling and screaming to every song Justin was singing so far. While Justin was singing “Down to earth” a lady (Allison) came up to me and said, “Do you wanna be the One Less Lonely Girl”. I said “What?” (since I couldn’t hear because of all the screaming) then she said again, “Do you wanna be the One Less Lonely Girl?” Then I realized what she was asking me and I said “YES!” She said, “Alright come with me” . I followed her backstage. She asked me questions like, “Where are you from?” “How old are you?” then she said “Do you need any water?” because I looked like I was going to pass out . Then she said, “Justin is going to sing to you” and she was talking to me the whole time and was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Then one of Justin’s back up dancers, Marvin, started talking to me and started dancing with me. They told me to move in a different place backstage but closer to the curtain. I remember Allison saying “look” and I could see the shadow of Justin being behind me singing to the audience. Then everyone asked me to step up in front of the black curtain. Then when I heard the lyrics, “I can fix up your broken heart” they opened the curtain for me and I walked out on stage . They brought me a chair and I started getting tears in my eyes. I couldn’t believe what was happening. Justin came down the stairs in his white long sleeve shirt, white pants, purple high tops, and a purple yankees hat. He comes over to me and gave me roses. He places them in my lap and looks straight in my eyes. Then he circles around me and drags his hand along my back and goes up to the front of the stage and waves his hands to the audience back and forth. Then he comes over to me puts his hand on my right cheek, looks in my eyes, and strokes it. Then goes behind me and starts dancing with his dancers. He came back to me, strokes my right cheek once more, stairs into me eyes deeply, then goes behind me and gives me a hug. Then he kisses me on the head and then the lights go off. I walk off stage with one of his back up dancers and was balling my eyes. Allison and the camera man walked me back to my seat. While I was walking back, people were putting there hands out and looking at me and I was on the big screen. When I was got back to my seat all of my friends were crying saying, “I hate you” and “You lived my dream” but I was still in shock by then and still crying so I didn’t even hear half the things they said. While the concert was still going on, Allison comes back with a disc that had the whole thing on tape. I thanked her so much and finished watching the concert. After the concert people came up to me asking so many questions, asking for a rose and a mother wanted to pay me $10 for a rose. I will never forget that day. It was the best thing that could ever happen to me. When I got home, I balled my eyes out again and then I put the flowers in a vase and then I found a scarf with his name on it that was in the flowers and it says “One Less Lonely Girl”. From this day I still have the flowers hanging in my room, and still have the scarf that I wear all the time. I watch my video about 3 times a day and at my school I’m known as the girl who got on stage with Justin Bieber. I will never, ever forget that day, and how that day was the best day of my life. -@lyssabiebs Here is a video when I was the OLLG! Tupac Shakur Rejects ‘Role-Model Label’ In 1992

Iconic rapper would have turned 40 years old on Thursday. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by MTV News Tupac Shakur in 1992 Photo: Amalgam Digital Had he lived, Tupac Shakur would have turned 40 years old on Thursday (June 16). The sometimes enigmatic, always fiery rapper would have been a grizzled veteran looking back with nostalgia at the exploits that made him the model of hip-hop machismo and passion. But in an interview with MTV News in 1992, the late rapper expressed eloquently why he wanted no part of the “role model” title he was destined to be tagged with. “I say I don’t want to be a role model in the song, because if I let somebody put the role-model label on me, that limits me,” Tupac explained, referring to his song “Ghetto Gospel.” “Because look at those words, ‘role’ and ‘model.’ Both of those are fake words, to play a role and to model, that’s fake. I’m real. Being real, I drink, I hang out, I party — I do things that a 21-year-old does. And even worse, because I didn’t have a childhood, I’m reliving my childhood. I live life to its fullest, I make mistakes, but I do some stuff that some college kids wouldn’t do, because I live from my heart. I have fun. I don’t want to be a role model, I just want to be real.” If Tupac was anything, it was real. He openly admitted his flaws in interviews and his rhymes, and was known for being fiercely loyal, almost to a fault. The “California Love” rapper never wanted his success to prevent him from being relatable to his friends in the “outer city.” (“It’s the outer city because we’re always left out,” he said.) Never forgetting where he came from was a theme heard throughout ‘Pac’s music and was a trait inherent in people he saw as heroes. ” ‘Role model,’ that’s the word that they make. In the outer city, we don’t have it,” Tupac said. “We had [Mike] Tyson, Tyson was the perfect outer-city hero because he was always on the edge, they always wanted to make him a different type of person. But he would never be that, he would always be on the edge, and they hated him for that. They punished him because he never legitimized himself. He hung in clubs. He was the only person I knew that had millions that hung around with rappers. The only black person I know that made it to that millionaire status and then treated rappers with dignity.” ‘Pac continued, “Every entertainment person who has money looks at rappers as ignorant people with mics, holding our jocks, wearing Kangols and big gold chains. Mike Tyson was the only person I can remember being a millionaire and a real brother. And he was my hero, and I want to be like that. And I want more people like that.” Tragically and ironically, Tupac would be shot multiple times on September 7, 1996, after attending the Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Although one of hip-hop’s most recognizable stars would succumb to his injuries about a week later, his legend has only risen since his sudden death nearly 15 years ago. Nate Dogg Bid Farewell By Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Warren G

‘I’m so honored, so happy that you gave me the opportunity, God, to know Nate Dogg,’ Snoop eulogized at funeral. By Rahman Dukes Nate Dogg funeral Photo: Rahman Dukes LONG BEACH, California — On a dark and damp Saturday morning (March 26), thousands of family, friends and fans turned out for one last show from their hero, rap legend Nate Dogg , who was laid to rest in his hometown of Long Beach. Inside the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, lights shined down on the wooden coffin adorned with red and white flowers. Two jumbo screens on opposite sides of his casket flashed six different photos of the singer from a childhood boy, when he was known to family as “Buddy,” to the platinum singer known to the world as Nate Dogg. West Coast rap artists including Dr. Dre, Game, DJ Quik, Mack-10 and WC, DJ Pooh, Battlecat and others were on hand to pay their respects to the singer with platinum vocal chords. “1986, Poly High School, that’s where we connected for the first time,” an emotionally distraught Snoop reflected on his friend. “We didn’t know each other, but the music connected us. We built a brotherhood, a friendship.” Snoop first met Nate along with his best friend Warren G at the school where they would go on to form the rap trio 213. Warren G spoke briefly, reminding mourners in attendance what a great man the music world has lost. “It hurts me so much to see this,” Warren G said somberly while looking down at the casket. “We been through a whole lot and that was my dog. He stayed down with me from the bottom to the top. I didn’t ever think I would have to sit at a funeral for one of my dogs. All I can say is that was my friend, me him and Snoop was 213 from the balls to the walls. The music industry lost an incredible artist.” Several of Nate’s closest friends, relatives and colleagues including Xzibit, Daz and Kurupt, Butch Cassidy, Los Angeles radio station personality Big Boy from Power 106, and producer FredWreck all shared memorable stories of their friend, who they said made an important impact on their lives. Xzibit recalled a time during the Up in Smoke Tour when Nate was arrested, but hours later somehow magically appeared at the show’s next date. A teary-eyed Kurupt said Nate was the father figure who raised him. Manager Rod McGrew acted as Nate’s manager throughout his professional music career and was with him up until his last days. “He fought a hard fight,” McGrew said. He also thanked Dr. Dre and Eminem, in addition to Snoop, Warren G and Xzibit, for assisting the family in getting through the past several days. “The last three years were unbelievable. He didn’t give up. He just had a talk with God and gave up. Two hours before that he was fine.” McGrew said that with Nate’s passing, the singer’s three wishes will now be granted. “He wanted to go to heaven and hang with his boys,” McGrew said. “He loved Tupac. He recorded with him. He wanted to hang with Biggie. But the most important thing is that he can walk around heaven with his favorite artist of all time, Michael Jackson.” With his deep, melodic voice and smooth soul rumble, Dogg was one of the key elements in the rise of the West Coast G-Funk sound pioneered by Death Row Records in the early 1990s. Along with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Warren G, Nate was a critical participant in a number of major left-coast gangsta hits, including G’s “Regulate” and Dre’s iconic solo debut, 1992’s The Chronic. The hip-hop singer passed away earlier this month after suffering multiple health setbacks in the past several years stemming from separate strokes. The choir that sang during Nate’s home-going was handpicked by the singer himself. One of its members, Jacob Lusk , is currently a contestant on “American Idol.” “He was a loving caring individual,” said Snoop. “If you listen to his music, he took church melodies and flipped it with hip-hop. I’m so honored, so happy that you gave me the opportunity, God, to know Nate Dogg. I want to stand here and cry, but I have to have the strength for you Nate Dogg. It’s 213, DPG for life.” Related Videos Remembering Nate Dogg Related Photos Nate Dogg: A Life In Photos Nate Dogg’s Hometown Wake Related Artists Nate Dogg

New ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

The new preview gives us a few clues about Jack’s journey to the Fountain of Youth. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow Photo: Disney We’ve just crossed the two-month mark; there’s now a mere 59 days until “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” shoves off and into theaters. What’s more, there’s now a brand-new trailer for Johnny Depp’s seafaring 3-D adventure flick, giving us important pieces of plot info and raising all new questions about what we’re going to see when the movie debuts. As we continue to count down the days until that premiere, let’s take a look at the new trailer’s five key moments. Looks Like They Took a Wrong Turn We’ve already seen a variation of this scene — Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow walking under some kind of stone archway on an island — but in the new trailer, we see the camera push forward a little, giving us a peek at what’s on the other side: a ship perched on a cliff high above the water line. How’d it get there? Well, as we see throughout the new footage, the laws of physics get twisted in all sorts of funky ways. Just as compelling a question as what the ship is doing up there is: Whose ship is it? Speaking of ships, the Black Pearl is back in the mix, though this time it seems to be in the hands of nefarious Blackbeard (Ian McShane). And as Captain Barbossa explains, Blackbeard has made some unconventional improvements to the craft. “The rigging had come to life. Our own ship turned against us,” he tells Jack as we see shots of ropes whipping around like tentacles and plucking up pirates. What sort of dark magic does Blackbeard wield? A confusing one, no doubt, because after Sparrow gets caught up in the ship’s new powers, he blurts out, “Captain, I wish to report a mutiny. I can name fingers and point names!” We’ve seen plenty of mermaids floating through previous “Pirates” footage, but the new trailer gives us the most information yet about how these creatures fit into the storyline. Turns out, a mermaid is needed to locate the fountain of youth — that mythical place everyone in “On Stranger Tides” is trying to find. That explains why, as in earlier footage, we see a shot of a mermaid trapped in a seriously large fish tank. Captivity, however, can kill a mermaid. Given that under his tattoos and dreadlocks, Sparrow is a very moral guy, we suspect Jack might go from capturing a mermaid to setting one free. From the very first official “On Stranger Tides” photos , we’ve seen Jack being dragged into Old Royal Naval College by King George II’s guards and offered the job of finding the fountain of youth. But the captain isn’t one take to orders. How does he slip away from King George’s men? A clue seems to arrive in the form of Jack wearing a musty old wig and a bright red robe, just like a British judge: nothing like a clever disguise to help a pirate escape. As we mentioned, Jack’s quest for the fountain brings him into contact with lands in which the laws of physics don’t entirely apply. Early in the new trailer, for instance, a drop of water seems to fall upwards, hitting Jack’s hands as it goes. Here we see our hero in a sort of cave that has a roof of water. How exactly does something like happen? And, furthermore, how is he pulled up into the water as if by reverse gravity? We likely won’t get the full answer until the movie arrives on May 20. Lady Gaga Rocks Fans With Monster Ball Performance

‘I swear it was the best show I’ve ever gone to!’ fan exclaims of Atlantic City showcase. By Shawn Adler Lady Gaga performs in Atlantic City on Saturday Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage Mother Monster might have been the one on stage Saturday night (February 19) belting out numbers at the top of her lungs, but it was the Little Monsters in the audience who reached impossibly loud volumes for their hero, Lady Gaga. And they did it outside the arena. “I swear it was the best show I’ve ever gone to!” a fan screamed to MTV News outside of Boardwalk Hall arena in Atlantic City, where Gaga had just finished her Monster Ball performance. “I was waiting for it!” “I loved it!” fan Sandy Kutsu gushed at alarming decibels. “It was my second time!” Generally sticking to her Monster Ball format, Gaga nevertheless had some new tricks and treats in store for her appreciative audience, including a performance of “Born This Way” (“She did ‘Born This Way’!” a fan exclaimed!) during a second encore, just one day after the single was named the fastest-selling single in the history of iTunes . “There was a little bit of new choreography, some new costuming. But other than that it was the Monster Ball we know and love,” fan Stephanie Botton explained. “I was in tears at ‘Born this Way.’ It was absolutely great.” The biggest surprise, however, might have been Gaga’s announcement during the show that she’d be back on tour next year with the “Born This Way Ball.” “How can one person do all that? I have no idea!” gushed fan Kaitlin Donahue. For fans, the tour surely can’t come quickly enough. “She’s changed my life,” Botton said. “It was awesome!” Related Photos Lady Gaga Lights Up Atlantic City Related Artists Lady Gaga
